It was a Thursday night, and there was a piano player (Marcia) who was performing, and giving their all out performance while under the weather. Very hole in the wall italian restaurant. Just down a few steps from the street. As you walk in, the bar is to the right. We opted for a table. There was live music. Service was great. Our server was very on top of our table making sure we had everything we needed. Excellent menu. Very traditional Italian. We started off with the beef carpaccio. I had the spaghetti with clams and my husband had the chicken parm. They are actually known for their pasta with vodka sauce. Wish we tried that too because it looked amazing. It definitely feels like an old style Italian restaurant and there was live piano that set a great mood. They also have a lot of those celebrity photos on the wall. They have a great wine list, so we ordered a nice bottle of red. For starters, we started with the caprese which was outstanding with nice fresh tomatoes and the perfect mozzarella. For the main course, I ordered the lobster ravioli special that was in a butter sauce. This was excellent, the pasta was nice and fresh and the sauce was the perfect complement. I also tried some of the cheese ravioli in red sauce and this was great as well. For dessert, we had the cannolis. Simply wonderful. Great place with friendly service! Like other reviewers mentioned, they honor reservations but you'll still have to wait a bit, as did others who arrived at the same time with a reservation. It's extremely packed inside with limited space per table, but manageable. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced considering the large portions (by Manhattan standards). They also had a live piano player when I was there, which was wonderful. As was his singing voice. I had the salmon bruschetta which was just okay. I didn't enjoy it enough to reorder. The rigatoni buttera was delicious and the tomato sauce was nice. The cheese ravioli with mushroom and asparagus was also nice, however I liked the rigatoni much more. My daughter and I ate here on Sunday after a mom and daughter date in the city. We were heading out to catch a show at 7. So we had a 5:15 reservation. We were seated promptly and the service was prompt with drinks and menus. We asked to have a salad and a rigotonj with meatballs but shared. They happily complied. They brought out 1 meal in two plates evenly split !!! The food was also delicious. My daughter ordered a virgin Shirley temple and felt so grown up. Then we decided to split dessert. We ordered the cannoli. It was good but missed the mark on tastiness. I've had better. The one complaint was service at the end. The food always came out quick but our waiter was slow to clear plates and take next orders. We were just waiting about 10 minutes with empty plates before a dessert was offered. This is one of those restaurants where you don't think it'll be great because its near Time Square and so it must be a giant tourist trap right? Well shockingly no because this place was actually so good. Made a reservation day of and was able to get a good dinner time spot. Walked in and there was live music playing in the background, swoon! - Linguine Carbonara - The best carbonara in NYC in my opinion is at Olio e Piu, but I have to say that Da Marino may have the second best carbonara in NYC. The pasta was made perfectly al dente and there was so much of the yolky sauce covering every bit of it. Also, the portion sizes were huge! - Grilled Branzino - I love fish, period. Anyways now that this is out of the way, the sea bass was grilled quite well, but the star was definitely the sautéed spinach which was so weird because I never thought I would ever say that, but that spinach was crazy. It was so full of meaty flavor, I loved it. I feel like usually I only associate sautéed vegetables being made well in Asian cuisine so this surprised me a lot, but I'm glad I learned something new. - Calamari - At first I was a bit skeptical about the calamari because it didn't look like it was fried particularly well but it was actually so good. The marinara sauce had chunks of tomato in it which I loved and the squid was incredibly tender. What a surprise. - Arugula Salad with Goat Cheese - Can skip. I guess if you're looking for something light to go with all the other heavy dishes, you could order this to give your palate a refresher. If your expectation is an overpriced and touristy spot in the Theater District, you will probably be pleasantly surprised by a visit to Da Marino. A party of 6 - my girlfriend, my 2 sons and their signification others, we arrived with a 5:30 reservation preceeding a 7:30 show at the Winter Garden (about 500 feet away). Staff informed us that it would be a close thing, so they seated the two of us right away to get things going. The pasta dishes were very good -- the chicken parmesean, chicken marsala and sauce on the mussels was a little on the salty side, but still tasty. Carbonara could have used a bit more pancetta (and is typically better with guanciale), but it was still pretty darned good. Overall, good quality food, but the star of the show was honestly the NY strip - cooked and seasoned perfectly. Service was prompt and excellent - we finished our meal by 6:45 and had plenty of time to get to the show! Price was competitive for the area - pasta dishes in the mid $20 range and appropriately portioned - the chicken dishes in the mid $30 range were on the smaller side, but when paired with the side pasta were adequate. I used to like "Italian" food. At least I thought I did. Big family night? Go to the Olive Garden. Sigh. (Living in Southern California will do that). Then I spent two years of my Navy career working in Naples, Italy. Now when my family says they want Italian food, and my Daughter says "let's go to Olive Garden," I just shake my head. We have actually found a few very good Italian restaurants in the Southern California area, but none are as good as Rome or Florence, or Da Marino. We recently helped our son move to NYC, and while there, was referred to Da Marino by a friend who had been there several times. Now, when my wife says she wants Italian food, I almost start looking at tickets to JFK. It's THAT good. I have had the best food Italy has to offer, from Florence to Rome to Naples to the Amalfi Coast. Our visit to Da Marino put us in the heart of Italy (the country with the best food on the planet), and they met the standard. Conveniently located a block from Times Square and in the heart of the Theatre District, perfect for a pre-Broadway meal. The owner Craig is also a retired Navy veteran, so we had some commonality there. Frequent guests to the restaurant are a veritable who's who of NYC and Hollywood, with Martin Scorcese and Robert De Niro (among others) known to dine there, and countless other signed photographs from notable patrons adorn in the walls. If Scorcese and De Niro find Da Marino to be up to the standard for Italian food, I'd say that's a ringing endorsement. Upon entering, we were taken with the old-world look and feel of the decor, and greeted by Tom, the most gregarious and likable Maitre D' in the Big Apple. The hospitality of the entire staff is exceptional. There is a full cocktail bar (at which was produced an impeccable martini), there's a robust wine list (house Chianti was exceptional) and the appetizers were magnificent (Caprese and Calamari). Dinner was beyond compare, we ordered Pappardele Bolognese, Linguini with Clams and Linguini di Mare, which were all amazing. Linguini with clams was the best I have ever had, and I am very particular about that dish. Live piano music made for a perfect ambiance, and our sever Josh was wonderful. Dessert was cannoli and tiramisu; I had basically given up on tiramisu outside of Italy, but have now found the one place in the US I can really enjoy it. Light, delicious, ...perfect. Tom said the cheesecake is always extremely popular, but we had no room ... so we will be back for that. I rarely if ever write restaurant reviews of this length and detail, but Da Marino was well worth the effort. It was the finest Italian restaurant experience I have enjoyed outside of Italy. Tasted like the gross frozen meatballs I bought in store. The vodka sauce was just okay according to my son. My granddaughters trout was good. I wanted the eggplant Rollatini appetizer but they said it would take 25 min. So, we were not impressed and would not go back. We had this place recommended to us by a good friend of ours, and decided to check it out while we were on vacation in the area. We had just finished a show off Broadway, and the walk to the restaurant was only a few minutes away, a great location especially in the cold. Immediately after arriving, we were greeted by their manager, Tom, who welcomed us with a warm smile and kind demeanor and allowed us to sit wherever we wanted. Lovely live music was playing on this Friday night, and we were promptly given service once we sat down. We figured we would be more hungry by the time the show ended, which was such a disappointment considering how delicious all the food was! I wish we could have finished it all. I ordered a wonderful, creamy Penne Vodka, which they allowed me to add pancetta to, as well as my fiancé who ordered the Pasta e Fagioli. Service was great and attentive, everything you could ask for. We will be returning to this cute Italian spot the next time we visit. You would never dream that this place is in the busiest part of Times Square - it's tucked away down a few steps and you enter a truly wonderful and sometimes loud, fabulous restaurant! Years ago I found them when they had a placard on the street saying Chocolate pasta. Well...I lost all desire for where we were headed and walked down into Da Marinos. You enter into the galley bar to the hostess stand. Used to be we never had to wait, but wow, now you HAVE to have reservations or you sit at the bar, IF all those seats aren't taken already. I have to be honest, I've never had a thing off the menu except the chocolate pasta with shrimp. It's making my mouth water just thinking about it. Everyone I've been with laughs at my choice and they get traditional Italian dishes. I'm assuming, having never been to Italy, that chocolate pasta isn't a regular dish but who am I to say that?? It's delicious! My friends and family never have had a complaint about their dishes and also never complain that I always want to go here, so I'm taking from that that their dishes are as delicious as mine! Sometimes there's a pianist at night! I try to sit close to him because I'd rather hear piano than my neighboring tables conversations. A great decision. You get bread before dinner and can barely move after my pasta so I haven't had desserts here. Their wine list is a winner and they also have a full bar. Bathrooms are clean, but not huge, of course. And parking? Seriously?? I wouldn't survive driving around Times Square on any night of the week. Uber or subway if you value your life!
