I kinda hate being in MidTown. Just a symptom of being over half a century old. Too many people, especially now that the Planets have aligned and the Knicks aren't tripping over their own knees. So when a very good friend announced a One Act play around Madison Square Garden, I cringed. Getting here early, a found a nice quiet place to wait and read and eat. No loud music. No blaring TV or music. The bar itself is tranquilly decorated in white marble and Neon underlighting. I feel like I'm in Miami. I ordered the Neo red wine. For a snack I ordered the broccoli rabe and another side of asparagus. The broccoli rabe is delicious, tasting very fresh with a slight burnt aftertaste that provides flavor. The asparagus has a citrus and basil flavor profile, also very fresh tasting. After a day.... no a year of screaming children, it's good to find a spot that I can relax at from the hustle and bustle. read more

Terrible experience. We came to this restaurant around 8:00 p.m. and were seated immediately, which gave us a great first impression. Unfortunately, after being seated, no one came to greet us, offer water, or even acknowledge us. We waited about 5-8 minutes, and it appeared there were no servers covering our section--only one server who seemed busy elsewhere. We ultimately decided to leave because we didn't want to wait any longer without any communication. We ended up going to Butcher & Banker instead next door, where the service was prompt, attentive, and the food was excellent. Looking back, we're glad we made the decision to leave. read more

We didn't realize this is located in the New Yorker hotel but it was a great place for Italian food. I tried the Peach Cosmo first but then stuck with a Metropolitan cosmo which I preferred more. My friend stayed with his Moscow Mule he enjoyed. For food, I ordered the Whole Roasted Branzino and my friend got their Chicken Saltimbocca Rollatini. The branzino was already deboned but I liked they still gave me the whole fish body. It was perfectly seasoned and the meat was tender. I found very minor pieces of bones which didn't bother me. My friend really enjoyed his chicken dish which also looked good. We stayed chatting and enjoying several drinks which our server was attentive with. Someplace new for my vegetarian sister and my baby sis opening Aries season (6th & 14th). Dinner before the show ten blocks north (walkable). The options were atypical Italian fare. The location was well lit, no need for a flashlight to read the menu. The party we were seated a table away were very loud celebrating a retirement amongst a party of five. The vegetarian had a classic Margherita pizza with olives and extra cheese. She was delighted with her choice and she took some to go.Baby girl had a crab cake, spinach and mashed potatoes. She was pleasantly delighted with her choices. The eggplant snob I am ordered the eggplant parm and calamari. The eggplant did not impress me and I finished half the appetizer serving. I had such a pleasant experience here! The staff was welcoming and friendly, like I just walked into my Italian friend's dining room. The cocktails are excellent- maybe a bit too excellent ; 0 ) I had 3 apple martinis!!! They went down a bit too easily... We ordered clams oreganata-they were excellent with a perfect balance of breadcrumbs/seasoning and clams. Next was oysters- fresh and perfectly shucked and the mignonette was delish. We were the only customers for a weekday dinner around 5pm. They give you some bread with hummus. It's cold but alright. Then we ordered fried calamari and it was crunchy and delicious. The spicy marinara on the side was perfect. The short rib cannelloni was decent. It was filled with ricotta cheese, mozarella cheese and well cooked short ribs blanketed with pasta and pasta sauce. Honestly, you can make it at home. Nothing special. My boyfriend enjoyed the banana magarita and they gave me a large glass of malbec. Came here for dinner with a friend from out of town. We both needed some Italian and seeing that it's right by Madison Square Gardens (MSG), it was a great choice. Just a few people were in house when we arrived. We had reservations for 7:15p and were seated right away. It is a large restaurant, so would be ideal for big groups. Our server Tina was amazing!!!!! She was such a pleasure to have. She gave us her recommendations on the menu. It was a pleasure to have conversation with her. For appetizer, we had the fried calamari, which was great! It came out hot and crispy, and the spicy marinara sauce was a perfect match! For dinner, we had the shrimp calamari and the bolognese pappardelle. Again, both came out hot and were full of flavor and was just the right portion for both of us. We both enjoyed our entrees. And to top off the night, we had the cheesecake for dessert, which was amazing!!! Made fresh everyday in house and was not too creamy or not too sweet, it was just right!! this place is large and good for big groups. we were able to get a last minute reservation for 10 people on a weekday for lunch. the service was friendly and pretty prompt, had no complaints. the food was fine. the pizzas were pretty good, but very very thin. still not bad at all. the pappardelle was ok but nothing special; lacked a bit of flavor and lacked some richness. the pasta was soft. my lunchmates said the salmon was good, the short rib cannelloni was good, the carbonara was just ok. overall, not a bad spot if you have a big party and need a work lunch. read more

Prices are standard for the area, but a little high in my opinion. The cannelloni was the favorite of the table in terms of dishes (but that was also the most expensive dish). The vibe of the restaurant feels like a high-end Greek diner, but the menu is certainly Italian. Location is ideally convenient to Penn station, trains, shopping and Madison square garden. We had the pappardelle Bolognese, calamari, and a seafood scampi dish all of which were ideally prepared. We ordered drinks as well, as they have an extensive wine selection. The cost for dinner was less than $50 per person, which was value considering the quality, service and location. The next time we're in the area, will certainly be back. read more

We made our way to Trattoria Bianca after a play. Upon being seated, we were brought water and, quickly after, a basket of bread along with a small bowl of hummus with olive oil and what appeared to be red pepper aioli. I found that dip to be unusual for an Italian restaurant and requested olive oil with Parmesan for dipping. Our waiter told us he couldn't do that, which really surprised me, but a few minutes later he did indeed bring it to me. It would've been nice if the bread was warm but it was still tasty. I ordered the cheese tortellini (with red sauce instead of the cream sauce) and the man ordered veal scallopini. Both were delicious. The bottle of red we ordered was also pretty good. We had dinner here last night for a birthday. We were seated promptly, and the server was very sweet and accommodating. The drinks were good, although we did expect happy hour, and learned that it was nonexistent. Oysters were a nice size, sorry they did not have horseradish but oh well. I came here for dinner with my company and I really enjoyed my dining experience, between the food, staff, and the decor. The interiors were really nice with the booths and the Italian art deco posters helped create a pleasant ambiance. The restaurant is really big and is able to hold huge parties which is great for private events/company dinners/ parties, etc. The staff was attentive and made sure everyone was taken care of. However, I ordered a mojito, but they didn't tell me when I was placing my order that it wasn't available. I ended waiting a long time for a drink that never came and I instead got a peach cosmo that was really sweet and gross. I thought the food was pretty good, but not great. For the appetizers, we got meatballs, calamari fritti, and Italian cured meats The appetizers were good and I did like the peppers on top of the fried calamari which gave the dish a nice kick. For the main course, I got a filet mignon cooked medium-rare. I like the meat, but I felt it was a bit tough to eat. Also, keep in mind that it's just the steak and nothing else so you might want to accompany the meat with sides and butter. I also tried the Thyme Baked Salmon and chicken parm which were both good. I liked the desserts a lot. We got the dark chocolate ganache cake, NY cheesecake, and classic tiramisu. All were very good. The chocolate cake was my favorite because I enjoy a rich, thick cake but if that's not for you, the cheesecake was also very good. Mixed opinions about this restaurant. it started off so great but then declined as the night progressed. 4 stars only because of the appetizers and the staff, who were all great. Going right into it: The meatballs were tender and delicious. The calamari was basic, the cheese and fig jam was incredible. Soo tasty would order again. The chicken parm was not the best for the price, the sauce was watery and the breading disintegrated as the meal went on. The baked salmon was really good and flavorful. Paired with the mashed potatoes, you can't go wrong ordering it. The steak was alright. Not worth the price tag and a bit chewy but not inedible. As for desserts, the cheesecake was basic, pretty good. The tiramisu was alright and the chocolate cake was my favorite of the three. Came here for a birthday dinner celebration and totally enjoyed my time here. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a smile and though I was early I waited at the bar while having a drink for the rest to arrive. It was about 22 people at our table and I must say our waiter (can't remember his name but very funny, lots of jokes and he's from greece) was a gem. He handled our table well, attentive to everyone and made sure we were good. Our orders as well didnt take long to come to us bearing in mind our large numbers. I had the pan sauteed salmon with the couscous and radish. The salmon was done medium and tasted really good. The couscous was a different taste for my palette but after many bites I got accustomed. Not only did I have to send something back that came out ice cold, the New Zealand mussels appetizer weren't New Zealand the meat in the shells was half the size of a Chiclet (I am NOT kidding), but they weren't good. We stopped in for a bite on our way to Penn Station. (We entered through the Wyndham Hotel.) The appetizer salads were outstanding. We had a caprese salad and a beet and goat cheese salad. They were a perfect size for a quick, after show meal. I mentioned that we needed to get to a train in 45 minutes and they expedited our order, so that we were able to eat and get to the train on time. Prices are expensive for small portions. Personal Pizzas, for ex, are $25. Food taste is not exquisite or rarefied enough to justify the pricing. Definitely a "dine-in" restaurant (they do not deliver), so you can add extra 20% for the dine-in tip. If you pick up your order and must return for items they left out, they simply add those items to your bill - no courtesy discount, coupon, travel reimbursement etc - to compensate for your time and inconvenience.
