I'm not a big fan of Mediterranean food, as I've had two bad experiences at two other Mediterranean restaurant, but to my big surprise.............I really enjoyed my grindz when my coworkers suggest we go to "Da Spot" in the Moiliili neighborhood for lunch today! Where is Da Spot located? If you know where the Longs Drugs (Moiliili Branch) is, Da Spot is just across the street (on South King Street). There is free parking available, just look for the big yellow sign on Hausten Street (see pic). The parking lot is just before the Willows Restaurant area. After parking my car, my coworkers & I just took a short hop, skip, & jump to Da Spot. Upon entering the establishment, you basically walk up to the counter to order your food after looking at the wall menu, or checking out the pre-made hot foods that were available for the day. There is no table service, so it's basically order you food, pay at the counter, then look for an open table to sit & eat. Don't worry gang, the restaurant is pretty spacious, so finding an open table during lunch was not an issue, although they were quite busy today. I could see that they had a lot of foot traffic, so a lot of people just came in to do take out. After looking at the pre-made hot food items, I decided to get the Tomato Garlic Herb Red Snapper ($8.00), and my coworkers got the Malaysian Vegetable Curry ($6.00), and Thai Yellow Chicken Curry ($6.00). All plates came with a starch (Brown Rice or Saffron Rice), and a toss salad. What can I say about the grub? I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty my meal was! The Tomato Garlic Herb Red Snapper was delicious! Nice tomato garlicky flavor, so good the sauce, I had to get more of the sauce to put on my rice! Saffron Rice is not something I eat all the time, but when I do get it..........I really enjoy it! My coworkers have been here before, so they kinda knew what they wanted to eat when they came here, and apparently they really liked the food here, so that's why they turned me on to this place today. The verdict? I will have to agree with my coworkers on the delicious grindz here! If you haven't tried the food here, check 'em out...........and I think the food suppose to be on the healthier side too! BONUS!!! read more

When you first walk by Da Spot, it's kind of sketchy because it looks like it's in a garage. But when you go inside, you can smell all the spices and delicious chicken. Not many parking spaces during dinner time, so be careful. BEST Indian food I've ever tried in Hawai'i. They let you sample the dishes if you can't choose. You choose a dish and a salad plus which dressing you'd like on your salad. I like the lilikoi dressing; not too sweet and tastes refreshing. The papaya dressing is ok too, I just don't like the seeds. There's regular dressings as well if you aren't feeling adventurous. There's also a long list of smoothies and some desserts that look delicious but haven't tried them yet. I like how they have different food items the few times I've visited. Pretty decent prices. Will visit again. Edit: One of my family members ate at Da Spot recently and she got charged a tip on the credit card when she didn't even tip them. I'm not sure what happened. Be careful. read more

Update: this is just about the food truck on the UH Campus. I absolutely love their smoothies, but it should be noted that the food quality at this truck is extremely variable. Some days it's delicious and fresh, like the food in their restaurant on King street. Other days (like today) the food is downright inedible. Today I had a peanut curry that tasted 3 days old, bland and unsalted, vegetables cooked to mush, slightly spoiled soapy aftertaste, with cold rice and visibly spoiled greens as a side salad. It was genuinely difficult to choke it down and I threw most of it away. As in, I would rather be hungry than eat that. The food in the restaurant isn't like this at all. I would recommend that the restaurant owners look into quality control with the campus truck. read more

At first look, it's in a garage, but since it had good reviews on the news, I have been wanting to try this place for a couple of years. Well, it's not fine dining, but It did not disappoint! John helped us, and since it was our first time, he gave us a taste of the different sauces. Thank you, John, that made it so helpful to choose our dishes. The food was flavorful, well seasoned with just the right amount of spice. I like spicy food but the dishes were not hot, just pleasant to eat. Plates come with 2 scoops of rice if you want. I had saffron basmati rice and browm basmati rice. I think there was some wild red rice in it. Whatever it was, it was onolicious. The prices are affordable, more so because of the amount of food we got for our money. We both took home leftovers. I plan to take my husband there next week for lunch. read more

I remembered when Da Spot was near Mccully Park a long long time ago, and they always delivered when it came to yummy food. Had to try this location since I always drove past it, and from what I hear there's an Ala Moana location as well. Located on Hausten St. and King St., it's right across from Long's Drug. They have parking on Hausten but mostly everyone either walks there or just parks at Longs. They often have live music here so it was quite nice to enjoy music while eating your food. The line picks up quickly after 6pm and from what I've heard from friends, it will take a while to get your food. Luckily for us, we arrived when it wasn't busy and got our food decently quick. It's also quite hot in here and those giant fans don't do much. Might be a better idea so sit towards the outside. There's lots of dishes to try, mostly chicken, like most on here I wish they offered a wider variety. But nonetheless, I got Miso Shoyu Chicken, side salad, and my friend got some smoothies (Loco Coco and purple rain). **I wonder if the purple rain is a Prince reference haha**. But the chicken was very juicy and succulent. A little too salty for my taste but enjoyable. As for the smoothies, they were very enjoyable. It wasn't the most flavorful nor was it terrible, but I heard that at UH Manoa, the smoothies are much better so give that a try! The staff are always friendly and will give let you try any samples. I'm so happy I was finally able to get down to Da Spot. Not sure if the Ala Moana one has the same menu, but the King Street one is a must try. We were super lucky and found street parking very close by, but parking can be difficult. Tons of different curries to try and you can ask to try any of them if you are unsure of what you like. Staff is super friendly and willing to help. We ordered two combo plates, both with brown rice (they also had saffron rice) and the complementary lettuce salad. You could also choose from their deli salads for $2.50 each item. We chose to go with their mango dressing and their papaya seed dressing. It was a standard papaya seed dressing, but if you like green pickled mango, go for the mango dressing! Many of the items were pretty well stocked, while others like their Butter Chicken were running low. One of the combos we got was the Egyptian Chicken and the Coconut Yellow Chicken Curry. The other we got the two snapper curries. One was more of a creamy yellow curry, the second one like a savory tomato salsa (the spiciest out of everything). Let me just say OMG great portions and VERRRY delicious. Each one was mild in spiciness, but bold on flavor. I loved them all. All of the spices and the variety of flavors between the four options. A must must must try would be the Coconut Yellow Curry if you like creamy curries. I also really enjoyed the Tomato Snapper, a little kick of spice and citrus. I like the food here overall but there's just sort of this nagging feeling whenever I come here because there's always SOMETHING that's a little off putting each time I come. Like one time I came here and the soda machines were down. Another time I came and something was up with the credit card machine. Another time I was looking over all of the food choices and finally settled on something that looked good only for the staff to tell me that they hadn't switched the signs and they were sold out of what I already had my mind settled on. None of these things are ever deal breakers but I don't think I've ever come here and things were seamless. If you're into holistic, hipster food then the food here is quite good. Lots of curries and soups and salad options, and vegan, dairy free, etc options as well. Occasionally they'll have live music and the band that was in there the las time I went was awesome, so props for that. My Fairy Godmother visited me yesterday & granted me one wish... I chose to transform into a tall, young Asian guy who could eat anything he wanted & not have to exercise & not gain weight! POOF! Done!! Immediately, I went to Da Spot & ordered Eggplant Parmesan, Malaysian Thai Curry, Moroccan Chicken, saffron rice, brown rice (which is more like wild rice), baklava, Liquid Sunshine smoothie & a pineapple smoothie! YEAH! When I'm in a mood, I can grind! I first heard about this place from fellow Yelpers, Paul & Gary. They were sneaking off to grab more food as we had just finished dinner at another place & were heading out to a dessert place. Boy, was I envious that they could eat more than I could. Arg! To be young again... I was reminded about Da Spot again when I read Lyla's review - to me, it was a sign to get some of that food before I forgot (occupational hazard of old age). So, I found parking "across the street" where I needed to get some batteries, and made my way to the counter. The dining area is a wide open space with many chairs and tables. There is no door to close, so it's like an open-air cafe. I was there in the afterrnoon, so to me, it was HOT! I mean - the kind of hot where you NEED air conditioning. Almost unbearable. As soon as I got my order, I had to leave! There was a bunch of people in front of the counter. I couldn't figure out where the front of the line was. When more people came, we had to assemble ourselves into an organized fashion. Turned out that I was 4th in line. By the time I left, there were 12 people behind me. This was due to the service... There was one male who seemed to be creating all of the smoothies. There was one female who put together the plates. She also was the cashier. These 2 frontline people ran around while several guys in the kitchen appeared to cook and wash dishes. There were so many smoothies to choose from. When I decided on two concoctions, I was told that they were out of haupia/coconut flavored items. Oh, the disappointment! Under pressure, I chose # 21 & 23: Liquid Sunshine (orange) and a pineapple mix. Both were perfect for a summer day! The food was really good. The Moroccan Chicken is like a sweet shoyu chicken with nuts and berries. The Eggplant Parmesan was my favorite - lots of cheese and good flavor! The sweet, lightly crunchy, cinnamon-butteriness of the baklava was out of this world! The Malaysian Thai Curry was too hot for me. I am unable to tolerate spicy effects and am very sensitive. I do not believe that food should hurt us. I took one bite & I knew that I was doomed. I took another bite to make sure, and sadly said "bye bye" to the yummy coconut curry flavor... That was the end. My mouth was punishing me with pain! No more curry for me. Luckily, I was at home, enjoying my feast when I morphed back to my normal self and food coma hit! This place has been under my radar for some time now. I've seen great reviews and pics of mouth watering food. Just recently at the Nerdy Dancing Party I was able to sample the Moroccan chicken w/ saffron rice and their baklava and they were both very amazing! I bookmarked this place and finally was able to stop by for some takeout. As other Yelpsters have voiced, parking for this place can be a challenge. It was shortly before 11am and I had circled the block a couple of times unable to find parking. Eventually I gave up and decided to park across the street at Longs/CVS. It was still early so this place was quite empty. However, there were several people already there so I took a peek at the hot food line as I waited for my turn. I also glanced up at the menu but kept on looking down as I was trying to figure out what the dishes were. I was hungry so I decided to go for the full plate COMBO as I like variety. Kept on debating between the Egyptian Chicken or the Morrocan Chicken (which I really enjoyed at Nerdy Dancing). So after telling the staff I wanted saffron rice (you have a choice between brown rice as well) I took the plunge by going with the Morrocan Chicken and Thai Lamb Curry. The staff did inform me that there is a $2 surcharge for lamb entrees. I had already seen that note on the menu board but appreciated her informing me to avoid any possible misunderstanding when it's time to pay. I then ventured to the salad section only to have my mouth water over the large variety of salads. I sure didn't want the romaine greens that comes with the meal so I agreed to the surcharge again for a combo of their eggplant and curried chick peas. The food was incredible!!! I was somewhat caught off guard by finding large bones in the lamb curry. I thought it'd be boneless but it didn't matter because I enjoy eating meat with bones as I find it tastier. Lamb rib bones are okay as it's usually not that large and easy to eat but to have large pieces of bones caught me off guard... The Moroccan chicken was just as good as the 1st time around! I really like the cranberries in this dish. This entree may be on the sweet side but I LOVE it!!! I ate both entrees with the saffron rice, which had 2 SMALL scoops. Would have been nice if they gave more of that YUMMY rice!!!! The eggplant salad, which the staff recommended, was SOLID. Very tasty and the flavors hit many notes in my mouth. However, the chick pea salad looked better than it tastes. It was OKAY to me, nothing special. I also got a couple of their baklava and they were tastier than what I had at Nerdy Dancing. They had a full tray in the display case and I was the 1st person of the day (as not one piece was missing in the tray). When I took a bite it was so buttery and flaky! Loved the sweetness, aroma and crunch from the nuts! Definitely a MUST if you come here!!! This meal was SOOOOOO huge that I had it for lunch and then the leftovers for dinner! The cost of this meal with dessert: $56 To my dismay, I found a parking ticket when I returned to my car. Because I had illegally parked at Longs/CVS, I was slapped a $40 parking ticket from Diamond Parking Service. Hence, this was a costly meal and had to dock down 1 star for this. This spot serves a variety of Mediterranean items and South Asian food. They have free parking on Hausten (plenty of signs so easy to find) and only a one or two minute walk (just before the Old Willows restaurant) so it's pretty convenient. They have ready made hot (curries, even a teri chicken type of offering) and cold foods (salads) you can choose to make plates. Sandwiches are fresh made but not always available. (Not sure why.) You can upgrade the tossed salad that comes with the sandwiches for $2.50 and select any item from the wide selection of salads. We had the chicken Gyro and the Lamb Gyro. The server said he had to ask if the kitchen could make it, came back and said ok. Someone came in later and tried to order a sandwich of some kind and his server said the kitchen was too busy to make sandwiches so I guess we lucked out. The wrap wasn't quite like regular pita, but was very good. It was more like a thin, fluffy pita-like wrap. Very delicious and with a great texture. Both gyros were a very nice size. Initially thought it was a little pricey but when we got them we thought it was worth the price. Their tzatziki sauce is REALLY good! The lamb was slices of lamb, not the usual shavings so it was a tiny bit chewier than most gyros. Flavor was good, not as salty as most other places (of course this places says healthy). Daughter opted to try a pesto pasta type of salad. We didn't think it was worth the $2.50 to upgrade. Very small serving and the taste was just "ok." It needed more pesto for flavor. Baklava came in regular and chocolate covered haupia. We tried both. Choc / haupia was good but not exceptional. Hershey choc syrup and I think coconut ice cream, so it was very refreshing but masked the baklava flavors and textures. The regular baklava was awesome snd to die for! Great honey flavor and good texture. Little more dense than flaky but it was so tasty it didn't matter and was actually easier to eat since it didn't crumble as easily. Seating is in both the store section and extends to under a covered lanai in front of the store. If it's warm - try to get a table under the lanai, noisier because it's closer to the street but cooler. Would eat here again if I'm in the area since they do have parking, but would not make a special trip since I'd want the gyro and there's no guarantee I'll be able to get it. read more

I don't know what the hype is about but the food isn't that great, the prices aren't that cheap, and the service is awful. And all that old-looking buffet food sitting out in the hot room, I don't know. We came on a busy lunch time Saturday and there was a long line but only one dude working the buffet and cash register at the same time, and one girl working the smoothies. So we had to wait forever. When I ordered a gyro I was told it'd take 15-20 minutes, wow some gyro which is a to-go food. It was a decent gyro but the wait turns me off. My husband had the famous Egyptian chicken which is just ok, I didn't taste anything special about it other than it's braised chicken thighs in some mediterranean spices. read more

If you're looking for cheap, refreshing smoothies and affordable, healthy-ish meals, Da Spot is DA SPOT! The South King Street location is a great place to meet up for a casual meal. Tables have ~5 chairs each and there are about a dozen tables total. During the week they sometimes have performances in the evenings, which are pretty cool. My go to smoothies are Purple Rain (acai, grape, berries, banana), Strawberry Potion (strawberry, haupia, soymilk) and Green Peace (kiwi, pear, lychee, guava). While I won't pretend that these smoothies are ridiculously healthy (they add lots of sorbet), they are soooo yummy! And you get a great bang for your buck! Small (16 oz) - $3 Medium (20 oz) - $3.50 Large (32 oz) - $5 You can also create your own smoothie for the same price! Crazy! In terms of food, the minis are definitely enough to fill me up! For $6, you get 2 scoops of rice (brown or saffron), an entree (lamb and snapper are more expensive), and a romaine salad (the mango or papaya seed dressings are the most popular, but they have your standard ranch, thousand island, and Italian). I love their chicken parmesan and teriyaki miso chicken. Depending on when you get there, if it's been sitting in the warmers for a while, there's a chance that the chicken might be a bit dry. If you get it when the pan first comes out - it is SO GOOD! Lots of great memories have been made in this place! read more

After sampling some yummy salad from Da Spot at a recent Yelp event, I've been wanting to try other yummy things Da Spot has to offer. I saw that Da Spot was open late (they close at 9:30pm!) and excitedly drove over after work to get me some lamb curry. I had read about the difficult parking situation, aka there is no parking...those reviewers were not lying. I couldn't find any reasonably close street parking and on top of my struggles, it was raining. I chanced parking in a loading zone and planned to get take out. The girl helping me wasn't very friendly, whereas the other female worker helping other customers seemed really friendly. I got a regular Egyptian lamb curry plate with salad. I also bought two pieces of baklava (because they're pretty small). The portions were large enough, but I won't be getting the baklava next time. Although the flavor was good and sweet and the filo dough was light and flakey, I think they were over $2 each. I ended up spending over $15 for a regular plate and 2 baklava. Lamb dishes cost $2 extra too. The lamb curry was flavorful and delicious. The saffron rice wasn't the best I've ever had. I can't wait to come back to try the other curries and smoothies. Perfect place for a quick lunch or a life changing acai bowl. It's like a cafeteria with a huge entry way without doors so people are in and out all the time but service is fast and friendly. THE Acai Bowl: I realize it's unfair to rate something so high when it's the first time I've ever eaten it but I'm going with it. I can't stop thinking about it, talking about it, I think I have a crush. On a food. From what I've seen it's also the best priced one on the island. Also, the size is humongous, definitely shareable, if you're even willing to be that nice. I've also had one of the Moroccan chicken plates. The flavor was powerful and on point! I want to try everything here! There a big assortment of dishes, sides, and smoothies galore - seems relatively healthy. There's something for everyone. read more

Since I was in the neighborhood and shopping at Longs, I was craving for their baklava, and decided to walk over and ended up buying a late lunch at Da Spot. The restaurant has much more choices of food than the food stand at Merchant Street Market, and I got to meet the cooks there too. Although they charge tax at their restaurant (their food stand doesn't), they offer a variety of flavorful Mediterranean, Greek and Thai dishes: Baba Ghanoush sandwich - 4 stars - for $6 they offered hummus on the menu, but ran out, so instead, served babaghanosh which is made of eggplant instead. It had a very garlic flavor which stayed in my mouth for a few hours. You have a choice of having it wrapped in flat bread, or you want to eat it like a dip. Although it doesn't look very much, I was very full from this dish, and I'd order this again. Tabouli salad - 3 stars - for $3.50 you can order 1/2 lb of their special salads. I decided to order the cilantro tabuli, and it has strong onion and herb flavors to it. Baklava - 5 stars - again, they make the best baklava. Can't say anymore to that. At first, they ran out of baklava, but they told me if I waited another 15 minutes, they will have a new batch, so I walked over to finish my shopping at Longs, then walked back over to get a few pieces. Service - 4 stars - the cook/server was very friendly and also answered all my questions. The cashier, though, was new and wasn't so enthused. The mother, who also cooks in the back also gave out small samples of their eggplant salad for the patrons to try. They have a bathroom, but you need to walk in a narrow rocky pathway way in the back of the building with only toilet paper. No soap, no paper napkins. They do have sinks for them to wash their hands at the front and in the back before serving you though. read more

Don't know how the food taste as I was picking up a plate for someone else but it was a Monday at 7:30pm. I ordered online and got there to find out that the order wasn't even picked. An employee literally said , "we didn't do any Online orders because we are too busy!" The person who helped was very nice and said to give them 5 minutes to get my order done. He came back in 3 with the food and apologized as they had no take out bags. NP When I got home, no Mac nut pasta in the plate that was ordered and which is an extra $2.50. Probably won't go back, for myself at least. I hope that's not how it always is? read more

This place seems healthy enough! Not too salty and decent portion sizes for the price! Would've given this place 5 stars but my food was cold. Got the spicy chicken and coconut curry. Also thought the salad portion size was a little small and plain but the other stuff I ordered made up for it. You defiantly have to be in the mood for the flavors so can't imagine eating here too often but it's amazing if you're in the mood. They also have vegetarian options! read more

I've been meaning to try Da Spot for a while, but hadn't had the chance to because of the lack of parking. FYI: if you dorm or go to UH, the JCC shuttle drops you off a street over from the restaurant. They also have a food truck at UH, but they have a much better selection at the restaurant. The hot dishes are all ready to serve from the line. They had a lot of chicken dishes today, like Egyptian chicken and BBQ cumin chicken and chicken curry. They also had two vegetarian dishes and a lamb shank dish. I had the mini Egyptian chicken which came with one very large piece of thigh meat chicken, two scoops of rice (saffron or brown) and a side salad. I opted for the $2.50 upgrade to the avocado salad, which is worth it if you're like me and love avocado. I would definitely come back for the Egyptian chicken. $6 for a mini plate with side salad is really reasonable to me, especially since you can get awesome saffron rice. I'll probably get a regular plate next time, since I really enjoyed the Egyptian chicken. Strangely enough, the girl said the made-to-order sandwiches take 15-20 minutes to make. How does it take that long to make a sandwich? Anyway... The smoothie selection is also very extensive, and I like that they let you create your own smoothie. I can get their smoothies from their lunch wagon at UH anytime, so that's why I opted for the plate lunch. The homemade triple chocolate brownie was also pretty good! I wish the area had better parking, otherwise I'd be back more often. read more

Anyways, long review short: *Ambience: i am starting to like their Ala Moana location better but this is ok. I like that now they have parking!! (I always had to buy something at Longs and run here pretty quick before i get busted!) *Service: nice and friendly! *Food: I have tried almost all their plates (except their salads cause i dont eat vegetables) My favorite items are their moroccan chicken, lemon fish and lamb items! Some items are 3 stars, some 4 and some even 5 so kets give them 4! Prices are pretty good too! Overall, i would still coming back! read more

I stopped by to pickup something to eat. I ordered the chicken parmesan which is normally good but today it was pretty bad.. I haven't been here to eat for a while. The chicken parmesan was cold and the vegetables were raw it was Disgusting! It deserves a ZERO STAR. read more

Used to love this place. It was Definitely one of my favorites on the island. It's a great value for how much food you get. However, that all changed when I went a few weeks back and got my usually mini plate and smoothie. Service was terrible, the employees treated me like I was a burden when I asked about two of the entrees. Get my food and start eating the salad, I turn over a piece of lettuce, and what do I find?? A dead cockroach. Yup that's right. There was literally a dead cockroach in my salad, it was covered in the dressing from the salad so that means that it was definitely in there when they tossed the salad prior to serving. I was absolutely disgusted and couldn't believe what I had seen. Went up to the employees to tell them and showed them the salad and they just looked surprised and snickered at each other and said "oh whoops. Want us to make you a new one?" ....... I said no my appetite is definitely ruined now, but thanks. Went back and sat down to get my stuff to leave and a different employee comes out to offer my money back, which I accepted. Terrible experience. I will never go to this place or the one in ala Moana again, and I will actively persuade people to not go either by telling them this story and showing them the photo of a dead cockroach in my salad. read more

Da Spot is an inviting place to try out Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine without the snobbish attitudes of a haute restaurant serving high price ethnic food. I came in for lunch today and ordered a combo to go and another combo plate to dine in. The take out plate had Chicken Curry and Chicken Moroccan. The dine in plate had the Chicken Parmesan and the Chicken Gara Marsala. Both plates came with complimentary yellow or brown rice and lettuce salad. Yup, I really wanted to test out the food here. As you know, there is a different experience when you dine in versus take out. Usually, take out food is cold and cooked over done by the time you start eating. Whereas if you dined in, you expect the food to be steaming and be able to soak in the atmosphere of excited foodies like myself. The food is served a la carte style and no warmers under the tray. I know this because as the server scooped my chicken curry into the plate, no steam escaped. So don't expect your food to be piping hot when you receive it. The over all taste was inviting without the spicy after taste you get. The Gara Marsala had a bold taste of cinnamon followed by an after taste of some nut. The Chicken Parmesan was a refreshing taste of tomatoes with gooey cheese. The Chicken Curry is of the Thai variety--with peanut butter and other spices. The Moroccan Chicken looks like shoyu chicken but firmer in texture. I am happy that this place use thigh meat instead of the dry chicken breast meat that most health food places use. Da Spot's overall impression left me interested. I'll drop by some time to try their other dishes. read more

Bookmarked it for months and finally I'm here?! Why didn't I try here sooner?! It's a healthy food place, didn't know it was Mediterranean style. I came with a friend on a Friday night for dinner. The line wasn't too long. The menu was big. This is a order and seat yourself place. I was eyeing the smoothie menu. 30 something flavored smoothie...gosh, it looks so good. I ordered the Egyptian chicken with brown rice and salad with papaya dressing. Also got the #25 Amazon Wave smoothie: haupia and acai sorbet, soy milk, mixed berries and strawberry. The chicken sauce was kind of salty but good. Chicken was soft and tender. My friend said the dressing doesn't taste papaya-ish, more like a thousand island flavor. It doesn't really bother me. I absolutely love the smoothie! I can taste the soy milk with berry fruits. I love soy milk! I want to come back to try the acai bowls. read more
