Nice little diner in Williams Bay, refreshingly free of the lunatic Illinois crowd in Lake Geneva. (Of course, I am one off the lunatics from Illinois!) Unique menu selections, small seating area, old motif, but very nice. Great service, great food, reasonable prices. What more could you ask for? 20 minute wait on a beautiful Memorial Day morning. My wife had a broccoli omelet and loved it. I went with cinnamon roll French toast & sausage. The French toast was splendid, the sausage was a little greasy, very thin patties for about $4, I would try links or bacon next time. I stopped here with a friend on our way to Walworth from Milwaukee. I was attracted by the igloo shape, and we were running out of time to eat dinner (most places in this area close at 7PM during the off-season, even on Friday and Saturday). Their menu is huge, but because it was Friday, I had to have the Friday Night Fish Fry. They had four different choices of fish, and I chose the battered cod. I couldn't tell if it was fresh or frozen, but I'm going to guess fresh. The fries were delicious, but the coleslaw wasn't anything memorable. The fish was good, even though the portions seemed a bit small. Our service was great, but keep in mind that they do NOT take credit cards! Very friendly and accommodating staff. Our server was great, the atmosphere was fun. I had tuna salad- and was offered a sample first, because I was having trouble deciding between a few items. My husband had a 'rodeo' burger, which had bbq sauce, onion rings, cheese and god knows what else on top--he was very happy until he fell into a food coma for the rest of the day. The only thing wrong with this place is it closes at 3 PM. The food is great especially the Friday fish fry when they stay open until 7 PM or until everyone is fed. The potato pancakes are yummy. But the reason i go there as often as possible is the sweets. They make milkshakes with fresh fruit and the baked goods? All homemade. They have several pies each day and cinnamon donuts as well. Their baked good do not taste like they have been made using some industrial cookbook recipe, they are truly homemade and scrumptious. In Williams Bay all the restaurants close for the winter except this one, this is hometown, everybody knows one another and if they don't know you they still act like you are old friends. read more

Full confession, I waited a day to write this. Went to breakfast yesterday there, Sunday, with my cousins. We knew we had to wait, no big deal, server was fine and food was good. My issue is with the woman who was at the counter when we paid our bill. My mom is rehabbing from a stroke and went to pay the bill. She got $43 mixed up with $48 and the woman behind the counter was on the verge of a melt down because of it. My mom apologized and the woman would not let up about it. When I told the woman to relax and that there was no reason to be rude - she blew me off. The other issue I have with this is..she not once ever made eye contact with us, she was too busy dishing out pie and bitching to another server. I know this place is busy but if people are coming in using their hard earned money to eat there OR for some customers this is their only meal out - take the time to acknowledge the customer. It takes 10 seconds - the same amount of time that this woman made our experience and this review go from 4 or 5 stars to one. read more

I took a round-about way back to work from running out to Janesville and found myself super hungry while driving through Williams Bay. I was in luck. It was early enough in the day that Daddy Maxwell's was still open. I got there around 1:30 in the afternoon and had a seat at the counter. The restaurant is a very unique design, part igloo, part tiny diner. It's pretty fun. The menu is HUGE! They offer a ton of breakfast and lunch selections including Vienna Beef HOT DOGS!!! But something else caught my eye today, a grilled chees sandwich. The grilled chees is nothing out-of-this-world, but it is awfully good. Almost as good as my mom's. Almost!!! There are actually two things that made me give Daddy Maxwell's a 5 "star" joint. The first is their employees. They seem like a perfect family. There was the perfect amount of helping and gossip-type talk that made it just seem comfortable. It reminded me of having lunch with my family or coworkers! The second thing is the homemade doughnuts. They look like the most simple and basic of the doughnut world, a chocolate frosted, vanilla frosted or cinnamon sugar round cake. We were staying at an airbnb just across the street. In town for a family reunion. Started Saturday with carry out fresh donuts. Quite possibly the best donuts I've ever eaten! Saturday afternoon we went in for lunch. Patty Melt, Scottish Burger, Chicken with Pesto, and chicken enchilada soup... All got rave reviews. Cheese Curds are a must. Fun, eclectic diner feel. We are vacation renting in the area and I had read some reviews on Yelp regarding this restaurant. We were here with our two grand daughters, 9-15-18 and while we had a satisfying meal, it did not live up to some of the more favorable reviews in our estimation. My husband and I each had black coffee and an omelet (only came with toast-no hash browns or fruit-not even an orange wedge) and both girls ordered pancakes: regular chocolate chip size order and one short stack chocolate chip order. One girl had hot chocolate and one a lemonade. We ordered one cinnamon donut to share as we had read they were very good. It was a small donut giving us one small bite a piece for a donut charge of .85 cents-nothing memorable about the donut at all. No credit cards accepted. This is right down the road from our house and the few times we've gone there our food has been so so. The last two times our waitress brought our food out and it was ice cold - not how I want to enjoy my pancakes and eggs. When we mentioned it she rolled her eyes an told us they were busy and the syrup would heat them up. She also never came back to check if we need refills. My best friend and I were excited to try this place last wknd during our girls trip to LG. Food was pretty good, service from our waitress was terrific... so why 1 star? Because the manager or maybe owner (she was wearing a hit pink output that day) was RUDE - not to me but to her employees. Our server was cutting me a slice of pie to go and she flat out reprimanded her like a child and spoke very condescendingly to her (our server was probably in her 60s) IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS. This is hands-down the best diner-food we've ever had. We come here lot when we are in Lake Geneva, and would probably make a point of always eating there if we were staying in Williams Bay or even Fontana. On our most recent visit, we were rather unadventurous--I had a hot dog and my wife had a Swedish pancake with strawberries (lingonberries also available). It has always been popular with locals, one of whom passed our table, looked at my wife's dish, and said "I have that three days a week." This is a FUN place with great food. I had the BEST slice of ham with my breakfast that I've had anywhere. It covered half my place, was griddled perfectly and am thinking about it a week later. There's a reason you see lines here and it's worth the wait. I'm not a donut fan but theirs are wonderful, a breakfast appetizer! A lot to look at, great for keeping kids busy looking around. Quaint local place with great homemade food, but not really a greasy spoon place, which is exactly what I like for breakfast and why it is a 5-star for me. You are eating inside a igloo building, the kids love it but it is SMALL and you will be waiting in line on the summer weekend. I have only had breakfast there which rocks!
