I have the distinct feeling of eating here in the mid-1990s but I cannot be sure. So I will assume this is my first visit here (which is probably true). The store has three sets of long tables where people can order food and eat there. They serve noodle and rice dishes. I was there for the Bahn Mi sandwiches which I hear a very good. I ordered the grilled beef sandwich to go and it took about 10 minutes to get because she pulled the meat from the fridge and grilled it fresh. Nice! I also bought a side of three spring rolls. Once home, I ate the sandwich and it was very good. I will honestly go back and try another sandwich. The spring rolls were still soft and easy to bite into. The dipping sauce was not as good as some other that I had tried. Normally the wrapping dries out and hardens so it make it less than palatable. I was busy running errands and wanted something cheap for lunch so I settled on this place. Since it was my first time coming to this place, I didn't know what to do. There was no one behind the counter so I just stood there for about 5 minutes before an employee walked out from the back. Instead of greeting me, she immediately asked me what I wanted. I ordered 4 sandwiches: two #1 ham, head cheese & pate and two #14 grilled pork. Then I literally stood there for another 5-10 minutes, just waiting for my food. While I was waiting, the employee didn't ask me for any money. After about 10 minutes, an older man walked out from the back. I saw him walking towards the cash register so I walked up to him and told him what I ordered. After I paid him, my order was ready. In terms of flavor, I'm quite surprised that the bread isn't crispy. I saw the lady put the bread in the toaster but the bread is literally just cold and chewy. Out of both sandwich meats, I liked the grilled pork the most. The meat was flavorful and juicy. However, the sandwich barely had any meat and vegetables. The pate chaud was flaky and buttery but the filling was not the best, just a big chunk of meat that tasted kinda old, probably the worst pate chaud I've had (though I've only had it at 4-5 other places). The sandwich was decent but a little light on the veggies compared to other vietnamese sandwich shops, and doesn't equate to what they used to serve in the past at Dakao... or maybe they were just having a bad day?!? Either way, it wasn't too impressive during our recent visit on a Monday afternoon. Came here to pick up sandwiches for the first time. It's tucked into this strip mall, literally a hole in the wall. The plaza was kinda dead, but there were like 3 people eating here when I visited. My mom and I have been coming here for their sandwiches and egg rolls for more than 15 years. Although out of the many times I've visited, this was my first time meeting Vi! Do NOT come to this unsanitary place. They don't wear gloves when handling your food. My mom had a craving for their banh mi because they are the only place that has grilled beef. I had reservations about this place because I had already known they're not the cleanest, however it's what my mom wanted so what can I do. She gets what she wants. While waiting for our sandwiches, my mom asked me if they were wearing gloves. I peeped over from the side of the register and noticed the lady was NOT. I don't even think I saw her wash her hands. As our sandwiches were bagged, I questioned the lady at the register why they don't wear gloves. She smirked then went to go wash her hands. She wasn't my concern, it was the lady handling our food I was concerned about. Then the most bizzare thing ensued that started with a simple question. They kept our sandwiches at the register and the food handler went to go put on ONE glove to make new sandwiches for us. I did not ask for that. I explained to them that I was fine with what was already made, but for future reference they should start wearing gloves as it's unsanitary. We paid for the sandwiches and left. As we were driving off, I had my mom check to confirm the order was correct. I kid you not - they were not full at all. Each had one thin slice of cucumber, barely any daikon or carrots with about 3-4 pieces of microwaved beef. Oh hellllll no. This is unacceptable and I had to go back. Call me a Karen, I don't care, but I told the food handler that because she got upset about me asking her to wear gloves, she decided to play games and got skimpy. I haven't been to this Dakao in years although I've been to their original location in downtown San Jose a couple years ago. This was my go to place for banh mi before Huong Lan opened in the next plaza over. I don't think the interior has changed much since my last visit. The lighting inside was dim during the day. I recently came again to pick up shrimp rolls ($3.50) for my aunt as well a the grilled pork banh mi for myself (#14, $3.00). The shrimp rolls were decent but the peanut sauce that came with it was very watery. The banh mi lacked filling and what filling it did have was really fatty. The bread was also not that good. It didn't taste freshly baked. You're better off paying a little more for better food at Huong Lan. read more
