I feel like I had heard sooooo many good things about DAMO that maybe my expectations were a little unrealistic? After a semester of home barista-ing, I have sky-high matcha standards and unfortunately DAMO did not deliver. The matcha definitely tasted more on the grassy side, although I do have to say it was not bitter. The matcha is quite sweetened (too much for me but probably normal for most people) -- totally forgot that people automatically add syrup to drinks. Basic queens that like sweet matcha would like it here! I do think it is a little outrageous that the hojicha and matcha cost the same (for the unaware, hojicha is way cheaper than matcha). Come on weekdays since it's not crowded then and the parking situation is so solid (no valet or time limit). That said, you can typically find a spot to sit if you don't go during rush hour. I usually opt for their iced strawberry matcha latte. The strawberry component is the star of the show in my eyes. They make it in house and it's almost a jammy consistency. You get nice chunks of the fruit as you sip and it's a nice burst of brightness. On its own, I find DAMO's matcha to be strong and bitter. They have a parking lot, but it does get full once the other restaurants in the plaza are open. My absolute favorite is their Hojicha einspanner. Overrated Matcha Spot We visited Damo because it is famous for its matcha, but honestly, it was a disappointment. First, parking is a big problem -- even though there is a small lot in front, it's almost always full. Then comes the long line: we had to wait around 30 minutes (15-20 minutes outside in the heat, plus another 10-15 minutes inside). For just a cup of matcha, that's too much. They should really add more staff on weekends to speed things up. The matcha itself was very underwhelming. We ordered the strawberry matcha, but by noon most other flavors were already sold out. The drink tasted plain and watery, with too much ice. The strawberry pieces at the bottom were cut too big -- impossible to drink with the regular straw. Instead of being well blended, it felt like we were eating fruit salad inside a drink. Honestly, this was one of the least enjoyable matcha drinks we've had in Los Angeles, even though we try new matcha places almost every weekend. Parking can be absolutely atrocious and I will still go to DAMO. My go-to varies between the matcha einspanner, matcha einspanner, latte einspanner. The drinks are well made, the matcha is whisked well and creamy. I enjoy the creaminess of the einspanner drinks, but especially like that the matcha or coffee flavor is still present and isn't overpowered. When I get the strawberry matcha or the matcha einspanner I appreciate the the strawberry bits in the drink and that it doesn't have that artificial strawberry flavor. To top it off, I don't think I've ever had a bad drink at DAMO and drinks are consistently well-made. Even though the interior is relatively small, there's ample seating. DAMO is somewhere you can grab your drink and chat with some friends. DAMO offered limited food options, consisting of pastries and more traditional Korean snacks. I haven't had the pastries so I can't comment on that. The only negative is the parking. It can be a hit or miss, although in my experience it's been closer to a miss. Regardless, I like DAMO's drinks and find it worth the hassle. I'm from OC so I'm not in the area often and DAMO is one of my favorite cafes. I would definitely recommend DAMO to others. read more
