Malaya understood the assignment. We ordered the Ube Creme Latte and the Caramel Banana Latte. The Ube Creme Latte was the clear winner. It had an authentic ube flavor that tasted like actual ube instead of someone whispering "ube" into a regular latte. The Caramel Banana Latte was good too, but I've had better. The queso de bola ensaymada was absolutely superb. It was buttery, fluffy, perfectly sweet without sending you into a sugar coma, with just enough salty queso de bola to keep every bite interesting. The beef and asada empanadas disappeared embarrassingly fast. We probably should've ordered more. And can we take a moment to appreciate the parking lot? Finding parking in Silver Lake without circling the block 47 times feels like winning a small lottery. We had no trouble finding a spot. Malaya was a fun Filipino twist on the traditional coffee shop. The coffee options were unique and interesting. I got the Ube one which I couldn't tell it was ube but it was certainly doing something because it was really good. I also got an ensaymada which was so rich and butter. I would definitely come back just for that (not saying the coffee isn't good alone either). They do seem to have short supply of their other foods which they only had one of in the case when I was there. The service is very slow so this isn't the spot for a quick coffee. This is an adorable Phillipino coffee cafe! The menu is extensive and creative and I love the plush seating and atmosphere. It reads great energy. I ordered the banana caramel with oatmilk. Came here early afternoon on a weekday. The place had a pretty chill vibe to it - minimalist decor which featured the traditional Filipino writing system (Baybayin). This place is so far from me but is now my new favorite coffee shop. Totally worth the 40 minute drive every once in a while! I had somewhere to be in Silverlake later in the day so I decided to come here to do work while I wait for my next event. I came on a Friday around 2pm and was able to find parking in the lot, though the lot and the cafe started filling up around 4ish. I got an ube matcha with almond milk, and it was great! You could tell the matcha is high quality! I also got one of their mango brioche buns which was so delicious! Overall, it's a great study space with great drinks! We think they made one regular serving of matcha and just split it between the two drinks because after I made the matcha shots at home, it tasted how it usually tastes. A gem! I really love finding and trying out spots by my fellow Filipinos. And this place is amazing. I love their lattes, especially their matcha! They also offer ensaimadas and had their ube roll and it was soo good! They're in a plaza, parking might be difficult if it's packed. There are street parking around the area as well. Decided to check out Malaya since I've seen a handful of friends try this place out recently and I love supporting Filipino-owned businesses. There is a dedicated lot in front of the store, but parking can be tricky depending on how busy it is. I came on a Monday afternoon and there were a handful of spots in the lot. The inside is nice, bright and surrounded with light wood. It feels very warm and inviting with plenty of seating to study or catch up on some work. Very cute and cozy vibes for sure. The staff were super nice and we got our drinks relatively quickly. I got the Banana Caramel Latte. Banana Caramel Latte 8/10 - The first thing that stood out to me was the banana flavoring. It was definitely more "real" tasting than artificial tasting. The caramel was strong as well. The cream it came with was thick, sweet, and creamy. I would say overall the drink is on the sweeter side, but I didn't mind since I do have a sweet tooth so do keep that in mind! I couldn't decide on what to get but I settled on the ube creme latte after a recommendation from the barista and a pandan ensaymada. The latte came with a creme top which was delightful and the espresso and ube were excellent. The ensaymadas are little brioche buns with filling and I took mine home and microwaved it for a couple seconds and it turned out perfect. Super soft and fluffy.
