The first time I noticed Damo, there was line of people wrapped around the corner waiting to get in. I walked up to find out what was the commotion, only to find out that everyone was waiting in line to get matcha! I didn't wait in line and left but vowing to come back next time. Fast forward to my first visit. I got there fairly early in the morning because I was making a trek to the nearby Zion Market. No line and the store was practically empty. The store is very clean with a minimalist design. After placing my order for the matcha latte, I stood there excitedly waiting while my matcha was being whisked away by the friendly barista. After taking my first sip I was like DAMN! Now I know why all those folks were waiting in line. The earthy flavor of the matcha seamlessly melded with the creaminess of the milk. The hint of sweetness gently peeks through as the smoothness hits your tongue. Their matcha is top grade... it tastes like fresh greens and cream. If I had to nitpick, I'd probably wish the cup was bigger. You have to try it to understand. They have another location near DTLA. In the past week I've been in LA, I checked out four different matcha spots, and DAMO was my favorite out of them all. I don't normally repeat places on vacation, but DAMO was an exception. I went with my cousin this past Friday morning before convincing my friend to go earlier today after church. The line at DAMO isn't too long, and they're pretty fast at making the drinks. Both times I've gone, the drinks have been consistent and the perfect "not too sweet" level for me. HOJICHA EINSPENER - 7 I didn't realize until after I ordered that it's not hojicha latte with hojicha cream -- it's just hojicha tea, which was a much more refreshing and lighter option. And I really enjoyed it! The hojicha tea was pretty roasty and the strength was perfect. The cream was smooth and also had a good hojicha flavor. The hojicha tea was delicious on its own but also great when mixed with the hojicha cream. MATCHA LATTE - 7 My cousin got the Matcha Einspener, and I really enjoyed the earthiness of matcha, but didn't find the white cream necessary. So I tried the matcha latte instead, and it was perfect. This is seriously some high quality matcha drink. The flavor was deep with a nice frothy texture. I would highly recommend. If you're already in this plaza, definitely grab a matcha or hojicha (can't say which one I like more) from DAMO and swing over to Out of Ordi for some salt bread. That combination hits, and I did it twice while I was visiting. I would highly recommend this pipeline -- my cousin/friend waited in line at OOO while I grabbed the drinks from DAMO. I've had DAMO bookmarked for a coo minute now! I happened to be in the parking lot for Out of Ordi so I figured it's about time I try them out too. I went by today (Thursday around 1145ish so I didn't have a wait). I got the Chocolate Forest Matcha Einspaner w/ oatmilk + the Chestnut Einspaner to go. The chocolate cream top on the Chocolate Forest was excellent paired with the strong earthy matcha ~ the cream tasted like chocolate pudding. The drink was perfectly sweetened and definitely had a decent amount of matcha (very energizing that's for sure). The Chestnut Einspaner was unique (first time seeing this flavor einspanner anywhere). It was a sweet latte with a fun lil surprise at the bottom [a softened chestnut]. We decided to try DAMO because many people online were praising their great matcha flavor and thick einspanner foam. We don't usually go to many matcha places anymore because many have either fishy matcha, too bitter, or gritty texture. For those reasons, we are on the hunt for good matcha. We ordered the matcha einspanner and the strawberry matcha einspanner to test validity of the online claims. I believe the only adjustment that can be made to the drinks is the milk type. No adjustment to sweetness or ice level was made. I'm happy to report that everything said online is true. The matcha itself was had nice grassy notes, a smooth texture, and perfectly sweet. They use Monin syrups as their sweetener of choice. The einspanner layer was thick and similarly perfectly sweet. For the strawberry syrup, it had nice texture of mashed macerated strawberries. The drink itself was also decorated beautifully with a small dusting of matcha towards the opening of the lid. I would come back for just the matcha but the ambiance just added to the charm.
