Looking to feel a little fancy, but not so fancy that you need to dress up? Come to this spot here. It's next to the Marina, right by schmancy stores (there's a Whole Foods AND Gelson's nearby) and eateries. First thing I saw, they have lunch portions! I love this, because it allows me to order a little bit of everything and not have to sell my liver to cover the bill. I came with my mother and sister (she suggested this spot and had been here quite a bit) and we were hungry! Ordered 4 types of soup dumplings: chicken, pork, spicy pork and pork-crab; veggie Dan noodles; three cup chicken; snow pea leaves, green beans, and baby bok choy. It was the perfect amount as the lunch portions came with 3 dumplings an order and the dishes had enough to share. My mom also got the milk tea with boba and my sister opted for the matcha green tea. Now for what you're really looking for the review on the food: Dumplings: wrapper was perfectly enclosed, thin and a great portion, but as much as I wanted to love these they did let me down on the taste. I found the broth bland and the meat was the only flavor found. I was expecting an explosion but that was not the case. Side dishes: the veggies were crispy and flavorful, not over powered by the garlic, but not dry. The Dan noodles had a good flavor as well, but not as soft as I would've thought but maybe that's the style? The star of this meal was the three cup chicken. Yums! White meat, perfectly moist and the sauce was exactly the rich flavor I was looking for. Two things that will bring me back: the freaking three cup chicken and the service. Dined here for dinner with friends. While greeted warmly when one of the waitstaff asked me if I wanted something to drink I requested waters. He looked at me with distain and walked away! Huh? He then goes and delivers waters to other tables watching me watch him! Huh? Strange guy. So I sat and waited until I guess he was our waiter came and again requested waters- we ordered XLB - they either come 3 or 5 in a steamer- we got the pork and chicken plus cucumbers, Dan noodles with short ribs, green beans and sesame noodles. The sesame noodles were awful- gummy stuck together noodles with green onions on top. Yuk. The Dan noodles were okay and the XLB was basic- the dough was thicker and not as light at other places . We also ordered sake (huh sake in a Chinese place?) . Overall this place is located in a hyped up mall and offers really basic food. Parking in the structure will cost you dearly so park for free on Marina drive. Interior is sparse and open with indoor or outdoor dining. Prices are high for the quality and quantity. The Dan noodles were way too sweet. Short rib was really tender and snow pea leaves were tender. If the noodles hadn't been so sweet, I would definitely come back and take my mom here. Their beef rolls only had 4 pieces and the hoisin sauce was also too sweet. The beef rolls were good, but for the price and for only four of them, I don't think it's worth it. Their Xiao long baos were good and we got the pork and crab ones. Water at Chinese restaurants normally don't taste good, but the water here tasted really good. I've been here a few times and definitely find the food to be decent, although it comes at a higher price point. It's hard to make the case for coming here vs Lunasia (lower end but more varied menu) / Din Tai Fung (higher end), aside from its location sometime--but don't let my comparisons turn you off from trying Dan Modern. It's a solid choice for dim sum with a beer/wine menu. I had some soup dumplings (pork/shrimp and spicy pork) along with their short rib chow mein, bak choi, and garlic string beans. Finally a Chinese restaurant in Long Beach that is elevated and super authentic! I love that they are at 2nd and PCH which is very spacious and convenient for parking. It's in the middle of the plaza too so it's not hard to find. Once there, it wasn't crowded and got seated right away. Everything looked new and very clean. I also thought the service was great and efficient. I liked the menu options - so many to choose from and depends on what you're feeling. If you like soup noodles, fried rice, beef rolls, dumplings and more, you're in the right spot because they're very delicious here. I couldn't taste a lot of MSG or too salty so it was very good! I've been looking forward to eating here since I saw them start building it. The food definitely doesn't disappoint. Food: The food took about 30 minutes to cook and be served which makes sense since it was during the dinner rush. The xiao long bao were juicy. The beef noodle soup wasn't as hot as I would like when it was served but it was flavorful. However, I just wish the servings were bigger considering it's price. The noodle/rice dishes seem to be more like individual portions instead of family style. We had to order another dish since the portions were smaller than expected. Service: The service was exceptional. Our server was super kind and attentive. The servers did look really busy and overwhelmed at times due to the amount of customers. Inside: The inside was loud at times when it got busy. There isn't a lot of seating but the seating that they have is comfortable due to most of them being booths. The inside decoration is also very modern and appealing. Overall: This restaurant serves pretty good food. Service started out fantastic with June as our server recommending a few meal options that we got as well as some beers. We ended up getting the spicy pork soup dumplings, garlic green beans, and the short rib Dan noodles. Holy cow, everything tasted amazing, the noodles were a perfect chewy texture, the flavor was sweet and savory, the soup dumplings were plump with a good amount of juiciness to them, the green beans a perfect texture with the right amount of garlic. We absolutely love this place and wish we could eat here everyday or weekly! The homemade steamed or pan fried chicken and pork dumplings are our favorites. My kids (2 and 5 yo) could eat a tray or tray and a half to themselves, that's how much they love them. Their green beans are insanely delicious. Do yourself a favor and order the Dan mien with the steak. It's the best and most flavorful item on the menu. The service is always quick and we've never really had to wait for a table. First time here and everything was nothing less than amazing!! The food was fresh and well seasoned. Noodles and fried rice were soft and flavorful. Green bean and cucumbers were crisp and crunchy. Am picky AF about Chinese food, and tend to be wary when ordering or trying new spots. Someone on Long Beach Food Scene Week wrote about dumplings, and so I had to have some. Ordered pick up and was delighted to see two older Asian women sitting in a booth, chatting and eating (excellent sign). Got home, munched on dumplings (alas only 5 per order) and will be back. This is a wonderful addition to the 2nd & PCH restaurant options in the LBC! Soup dumplings are hands down my favorite thing there, delicious! (Spicy pork probably my favorite.) Their noodle and rice sides, as well as their soups are also excellent. Haven't tried anything on the menu yet that disappointed. They have beer and wine on the menu, no cocktails. (No biggy for our group but this may be a consideration for some.) We've always opted to sit out on the patio because we tend to go on walks with our pup before heading to dinner, and it's comfortable enough. Sometimes, when it's a bit cold, they inform you after you're seated that they didn't get propane for all the heaters and that they'll "try" to get you a heater...not my fav thing but it tends to work out in the end. Just bring a sweater if you get chilly but still want to sit on the patio. That all being said, we also love people watching on this patio, it's a good location in the shopping center for it. Chicken Dan Mein lots of flavor, can taste the sweet soy and the kick from the garlic. Noodles are hand made so they are pretty thick and the sauce doesn't hold so it made it a little on the drier side. Snow pea leaves huge stems but it tasted really fresh. Pork XLB was not the best I've had but not the worse sadly it doesn't stand out. Chicken steam dumpling the wrapper is hard so I would not recommend it. They tried to remake it for me but it's their wrapper. Might be better pan fried or crispy if they ever bring it to this location. Service though is all over the place seems like they can't handle it. But they aren't bad. The ambience is nice really modern which is what they were going for. Love the asthetic. read more

NIGHT AND DAY EXPERIENCE I had a draft ready to go, because the wait was awful. I assumed the food would make up for it, but I was mistaken. First, let me begin by saying our first visit in late November was amazing. Food was delicious on a busy day (when they lighted the Christmas Tree). But today was a different story. I'm not exaggerating when I say that was the WORST broth we have tasted, for both our Chicken and Oxtail Beef soup. We decided to leave because it wasn't worth finishing. The Garlic Chicken Da Mein was great though! Tasty as it was our first time. The wait? Already covered. No estimate time given at any moment. There were at least 4 tables outside that were free (and we said several times we were okay with eating outside). These tables hadn't been cleaned and remained with dirty dishes during the almost one hour we were there (including waiting time). Does it not matter that your customers are eating surrounded by dirty dishes? I try to be a patient person, but honestly, I regret not refusing to pay for the soups. I considered asking the waiter to taste the soup because it was that bad. read more

Came to Dan to grab some takeout for my boss and myself for dinner. The place was pretty packed for Monday, good for them! I was helped by Anne, the manager. She was AMAZING!!!! So sweet and professional! Highly recommended the short rib Dan mein. Anne was so gracious to add a half order of pickled cucumber for us to try and kindly added some rice for my order of mapo pork. Wow, talk about inter-branch variability. My wife and I ate at the Playa Vista location a couple of years ago and while the dumplings and noodles were pretty solid...they did not stand out or justify the price. My family has come to this new Long Beach location multiple times and raved about the XLB. Now I understand why! Whether it was the classic pork, pork & shrimp, chicken, or even spicy pork, they all possessed exquisitely delicate skins just durable enough to be picked up with chopsticks. Juice burst forth again and again with no shortage of tenderness either in the fillings. I would say the only small shortcoming was that the flavors weren't nearly as robust as my all-time favorite, Nan Xiang, in Flushing. Diving into the rest of the menu, the beef roll was ample and soft while the three cup chicken and chicken dan mein made up for the XLB with mad vibrant flavor. For some greens, the string beans with garlic, snow pea leaves with garlic, and pea sprouts with garlic were all well-cooked and derricious. Admittedly, the steamed pork & shrimp dumplings and oxtail beef noodle soup were on the bland side. Probably wouldn't order again. Service in the comfortable outdoor patio was solid and we especially appreciated the manager coming by to take care of us as well. 4.5 rounded up! read more

The service was good, but I had to keep getting their attention for refills. We went around lunch time and it wasn't too busy so we got sat down right away!! Salt pepper tofu: if you love tofu then 10/10 so good !!! And would recommend but if you're iffy about tofu then 8/10. Pork dumplings and shrimp and chicken dumplings: these were really good. There is nothing that they can do to improve them. Would definitely recommend getting these Veggie Fried Rice: 8/10 so good! I was actually surprised that it has broccoli and spinach. I got no onions on it. The flavor was actually good and would probably get this again. Veggie noodles: 8/10 they were good and had flavor. I love the thick noodles and veggies that they put in it. ASK FOR THE CHILI OIL TO ADD A BIT OF SPICE. Spinach garlic: 8/10 I thought this was really good. It is spinach and garlic so you can't go wrong here. Love this place! We came in on a night where they looked short staffed and their service was still on point. Every time we've been here, the service is consistently great. Joon was our server this time and he was well in formed about gluten sensitivities and allergies. We ordered the popcorn shrimp, snow pea leaves, spinach, fried rice and my partner had their chili oil dumplings. All was tasty. I usually also order their pork mabo tofu which I love. I don't know what the problem was tonight.... I went in to order to go just cucumbers and Dan Dan noodles without pork for myself. I was so excited to go home snuggle up and watch a movie and eat but the cucumbers were insanely spicy (which isn't normal) and the noodles were over cooked and had no sauce on them so they were clumped together by the time I got home. So I'll be ubering Taco Bell now since it's not edible.... Such a bummer! read more

I rarely leave reviews but felt compelled to leave one after our dinner experience on Sunday. We were hardly checked on through out our dinning experience and we communicated various times to staff and management that we were not being checked-on. The server didn't seem too apologetic but the manager was well aware that our experience was subpar and apologized. She did bring out a complimentary dish but forgot to put in a ticket for the remake of our soggy pop corn chicken. We had two toddlers and waited over 15 minutes for this dish. No one came to check on us and we literally had to get up and find servers multiple times to express our dissatisfaction. I'm a pretty patient and understanding person but this was completely unacceptable. The manager also said something like "sorry, we had high maintenance customers come in..." This is an amazing restaurant located in a great location! The food was incredible! Very generous portions. My favorite was the dungeness crab fried rice (lots of crab!) and the short rib Dan mien was very good. We also had the chicken and shrimp soup dumplings which were so tasty! We also had the shrimp and shishito peppers and the spinach with garlic. All delicious. Everything was fresh and had great flavor. The service was also great too. Can get a little loud with chatter of people but not too bad. The food is good but kind of depends on what you get. I loved the xiao long bao. Get 2 orders. One order is only 5 pieces and that's really not enough. I've had the chicken and the beef short rib dan mein. Both are good. The beef is better but beef is always better than chicken. Garlic creek beans are good but a little on the salty side. I was expecting the crispy kind but these were covered in a garlic sauce. The were good but unexpected. Last we we got the pan friend chicken dumpling. I don't usually choose chicken but she doesn't do seafood and wanted to mix up meat choice in dumplings. Neither of us liked the pan friend dumpling. Flavor isn't really there. I would have liked it more crispy. Our table ekighbors for steamed dumplings which looked good. I think I'll try steamed or crispy dumplings next time. The foods good. I've seen Dan Modern Chinese popping up over LA county, so I was curious about it and finally, while the SO and I were at a YEE nearby, we decided on Dan for dinner. For some reason, Dan seemed so familiar to me outside of it popping up all over the place, as if I had been to one before. I did some research on Dan and the owner of the chain previously opened ROC and it appears all the previous ROC locations were converted to Dan (or closed). I remember going to ROC at Beverly Grove years ago and, to be frank, I wasn't impressed. At the time I went, I just remember everything, including the xiao long bao, being bland. Back to 2023, it was quite packed and a 30 minute wait for 2, which was fine, as it gave us time to run around and do a couple things we needed to do @ 2nd & PCH. We got back just in time as the table was cleared for us and we sat down. I appreciate the simple menu. It just makes it easier to focus on the quality vs quantity of food. In this case, it really helped. We quickly ordered everything we wanted. Being that I have some childhood experience in the Chinese restaurant space, I am very judgey about Chinese food. First came the scallion pancakes, which were had a great flavor and not overly greasy on the outside. The shrimp and shishito peppers I was curious about and, well, it was exactly as advertised. I will say, they nailed the flavor and the sauce had the right amount of garlic flavor that added to the overall dish. The pork xiao long bao was good, but, let's be honest, it would need to be compared to Din Tai Fung and DTF still wins here. The flavor doesn't quite slap like at DTF...maybe DTF just uses more MSG? By far, my favorite was the simple string beans. The sauce was similar to the sauce in the shrimp + shishito peppers, but I noticed the string beans themselves were fantastic. Whoever supplied their string beans used really good ones. I'm wondering if how they cooked the string beans may be a little different than I do it...perhaps they blanched it before stir frying it with the sauce? Possibly flash fry briefly, then cooked it in the wok? Whatever the case, it was by far the favorite. Service felt a little rushed, but to be fair, we were seated about 30 minutes before closing so I don't really blame them. The only knock really is just for the prices. The string beans were, I believe, $14. The shrimp and shishito was $19. A bit pricey for Chinese food, but it was really good for what it was. And I'm sure the rent @ 2nd & PCH isn't cheap as well. Despite how the quantity of food looks small in the pictures, it's enough to fill up. Definitely a good option if we go after something a little upscale Chinese. read more

We had Dan's renowned Xiao Long Bao, exquisitely thin-skinned and flawlessly steamed, each dumpling bursting with succulent, savory broth and flavorful pork filling. The food: Dan noodles: this is a Shanghai thick fried noodle. Th sauce is a bit way too sweet. Maybe better for the American palate but doesn't need so much sugar. Oxtail noodle soup: hard pass, the worst dish here. My kids said the soup taste like water. When you think oxtail you think a rich broth but this is far from it. I even had to add soy sauce to make this bearable. Green beans- tough old green beans but the garlic sauce was nice Xlb: these are probably the juiciest xlb I've had BUT the juice lacked depth and flavor. I thought these were decent but not as good as DTF. Green onion pancake was ok, dipping sauce a bit too salty. The decor was simple but nice, clean.
