Zeeshan provided an absolutely outstanding experience--truly five-star service from start to finish. He was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. His recommendation of the chili dumplings was spot on--they were incredible and easily the highlight of the meal. I took my daughter here for lunch after scanning yelp for local choices near El Segundo. We enjoyed the short rib Dan mein noodles which had a delicious, complex beef sauce with greens and sauteed mushrooms. We also had the 3 piece spicy pork soup dumplings and 5 piece pork shrimp pan-fried dumplings. They were both great. Cooked perfectly. We also got the garlic baby bok choy which had sauteed garlic and plenty of bok choy which I took the leftovers home for lunch because it was a large portion. The iced jasmine tea, which my daughter said was very good. I had the Thai milk boba tea which I loved because the boba was very soft and chewy. Recommend highly. read more

This is probably one of the closest thing you can get to Din Tai Fung without the crazy wait and the lines! Definitely come with reservations, though! I will say that the food was just OK to my taste! But I did like the option that you could minimize the salt in the dishes! The ambience is great. This place has some of the best up scale Chinese I have ever had. The beef rolls, WOW, XLB, amazing, the cucumbers are spicy and fresh. We took our parents from out of town and they called us the week later to tell us they were craving it again. We also had the pork chop fried rice and short rib noodles, which are MUST GETS. Let's get this out of the way: Manhattan Beach is not a Chinese food town. So expectations matter. With that context, Dan Modern Chinese does a pretty solid job and is an easy four stars for the area. The xiao long bao are freshly made and nicely wrapped, though a little on the bland side. Not bad at all--just missing that extra pop. Still, I'd order them again if I were here. The mapo tofu was... confusing. Very soupy, which is strange since this isn't supposed to be a soup dish. Flavor was muted and the texture felt off. The onion pancake also leaned more doughy than crisp, and the onion flavor didn't really come through. Fine, but forgettable. Now the reason you come back: the short rib noodles. This dish is excellent. The beef is tender, rich, and flavorful, and the mushrooms work perfectly with it. Clear standout and easily the best thing we ordered. Bottom line: this isn't going to compete with SGV heavy hitters, but for Manhattan Beach, the quality is strong--and yes, it's better than Northern Cafe. If you live nearby and want a reliable Chinese spot without driving far, this is one worth keeping in rotation. read more

Celebrated Mother's Day a day early here for a party of 18 people including two kids under 5. When we arrived, our table wasn't set up, but they were able to put it together quickly. My family enjoyed the food here. We ordered so much, but the highlights were: popcorn chicken, scallion pancakes, spicy pork and shrimp wontons, soup dumplings, steak noodles, three cup chicken and salt and pepper tofu. Our server, Duke, I think his name was, was super friendly, attentive and took very good care of us! He even took the time to take our group photo. Lol. Thank you DUKE and the team behind the glass. We were so hungry when we arrived that we completely missed the "Wait to be Seated" sign and almost walked halfway through the restaurant before realizing our mistake--our apologies for that! The restaurant itself feels cozy and welcoming. I visit this shopping area quite often, and I'm really glad I discovered Northern Cafe because I will definitely be coming back from time to time. If you're looking for a delicious and affordable lunch, I highly recommend trying their lunch specials. Such a pleasant surprise! The service was top notch!! We went without a reservation and got seated after a quick 10 min wait time. We started with the shrimp and pork soup dumplings, and they were a great way to kick off the meal. I loved the rich, soupy texture inside each dumpling--warm, comforting, and packed with flavor. The real standout, though, was the Mapo Tofu. I normally have a strong dislike for tofu, but this dish completely changed my mind. The tofu was incredibly silky and paired beautifully with the flavorful sauce. It was easily my favorite dish of the night and an absolute must-order. We also tried the short rib fried rice. It wasn't quite what we were expecting--we were hoping for a spicy, street-style fried rice with plenty of soy sauce flavor. Instead, it was much lighter and not spicy at all. That said, it was still very tasty in its own way. There wasn't a lot of extra sauce, and it actually felt like a healthier take on fried rice. We ended up appreciating how well it balanced and complemented the richness of the Mapo Tofu. Overall, a really enjoyable meal with a few standout dishes. I was disappointed with my experience at this location. Compared to The Dan in Playa Vista, the food here just doesn't measure up. At this location, the cook clearly knows how to season and control temperature, the dishes there are flavorful and well-prepared. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. The meat in both the fried rice and noodle stir-fry was overcooked, making it dry and tough. The steamed dumplings also missed the mark; they use the same skin as the soup dumplings, which results in a chewy texture. While some of the other dishes on the menu may come at a premium, the soup dumplings here are a steal compared to other upscale joints in the vicinity. Personally, I can't get enough of their Short Rib Noodles - the flavor is consistently on point! However, on my last visit, I noticed the noodles were a bit tough to chew. I don't know, but this place had a big menu and decent reviews so we chose to hit up this spot. The vibes in here were super laid back. There was only one woman who we saw working which was also the hostess and everyone else's server, which was just us and another woman to tables away from us. We had a difficult time choosing something to order since the menu was so diverse. Everything from croffle ice cream, to clam chowder, to a full Thai menu. I saw banh mi on the menu and instantly knew I had to order it since I've never tried it before. So, I ordered the chicken meatball banh mi sandwich with a side salad (removing the jalapeño and spicy mayo). My friend ordered a Thai iced coffee and the pineapple curry. The food came out relatively quickly. My friend enjoyed her Thai iced coffee, but she said she wished she'd ordered the Thai tea instead. She also really liked her pineapple curry, and it came out piping hot. I tried it and it was super spicy, so not for me, but she really enjoyed it. My banh mi sandwich was interesting. Right off the bat, it was 75% bread. The bread wasn't bad. In fact, it was chewy and not tough to tear into, but the sandwich itself was mostly bread. There were only like three meatballs in the sandwich, which were cut in half, and I feel like there wasn't anything special about the meatballs. If I was blindfolded, I would think they were the Great Value frozen meatballs in a bag from Walmart. The pickled cabbage was nice though, even if the mixture made the entire bottom of the sandwich soggy af (but I like soggy bread so it was fine with me). I tore most of the bread off and left it on the plate. The side salad dressing also spilled onto the sandwich and contributed to the soggy bread. Now that I'm looking at the photo I took of the sandwich, there wasn't much cilantro on there at all. The pickled cabbage was at the very bottom buried in between all the bread.

It's walking distance to the beach so it's a really picturesque area during dinner when the sun is setting. The staff were nice and patient. The panang curry was delicious and balanced. The consistency wasn't too thick. The skewers came with a nice pickled cucumber side and a peanut sauce. The kids enjoyed it. There were a lot of dessert and vegetarian options. The interior is quaint and good for smaller groups. The bad: The greens in the pad see ew were very bitter and the flavor was salty. I felt like it didn't have great wok flavor. There's no outdoor seating. The interesting: I paid for metered parking right in front of the restaurant but there's also a parking garage across the street. There are toy cars in the cabinet. I'm not sure if they're meant for display or for kid guests to play with.

I'm happy to give 5 stars where it is deserved…read more I was craving soup for lunch and found this delicious hidden gem. I thought they were new but found to be here for 3 years! Sad I didn't come sooner. They are kind and attentive and answer any questions. The food is delicious and I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of my food I was enjoying myself that much lol The ambiance is super lowkey, chill vibe! Def will return
