Ginger for XLB
Yin K.

First time visiting this restaurant even though they have a few branches. The interior was clean, modern and cozy. They have "open kitchen" concept where it's a big glass window you can see through their kitchen and prep area for XLB. Ordered the usual dishes we would order at other modern chinese cuisine restaurants to compare the price and quality. * String beans: nice and flavorful with that garlic taste * Pork Fried rice: the pork is quite nicely seasoned, but on the drier side. Rice is nice evenly seasoned, not too oily nor sticky. * Beef Noodle soup: the soup lacked flavor imo. Beef is quite tender but it's a very small bowl * Pork xiao long bao: skin is thin, juicy on the inside once you poke through the dumpling skin with juice oozing out The experience is decent but not the most authentic flavor. Price tag is a tad on the higher end for a smaller quantity than you'd expect. On top of that, took our server quiiite some time to take our order or just to get our check.

XLB pork-shrimp dumpling, steamed pork-shrimp dumplings and our own shu mai.
David T.

We placed a doordash order for 1 XLB pork-shrimp dumplings, 1 steamed pork-shrimp dumplings, and 1 pork chop plate. Estimated time to arrive in between 8:23 -8:38 PM. Food arrived at 5:37PM. We also ate some shu mai that we bought from Tokyo Central. The dumplings were very good. And our dogs enjoyed the pork chops. There wasn't many choices with chinese food as late as we placed our order, but we were happy with our order.

Short rib fried rice: nice beef dish blends well with rice.

Solid dim sum brunch in Manhattan Beach. The location is nice and trendy but there is a definite din tai fung vibe. The restaurant is spacious and the service is excellent. Started with salt and pepper tofu, which is coated and deep fried. This was tasty and the dipping sauce had a nice kick. Pork xiao long bao is a signature dish as well as an essential dim sum. Sampled the chicken and it was fairly standard. Tried to kick it up a notch to the unhealthy side, so got deep fried pork dumplings. Dumplings come as steamed or deep fried, but what the hey, you gotta live a little. Carbs are a must and why not sample all textures. The short rib fried rice was flavorful although the portion was slightly small. The shrimp Dan main was ok but slightly heavy on the soy sauce seasoning. The black pepper beef was a nice dish to complement the carb dishes. All in all, it was a good experience. Of course dishes are shared, thus a great place to brunch with friends in manhattan beach. Parking is ample.

dan dan noodle w/ pork

Dan was a very nice clean and chique restaurant located in the Manhattan beach village. There is plenty of parking since there are park lots and structures around. The servers are very kind and attentive. The food is pretty good! My favorite were the pickled cucumbers and the Dan Dan noodles, the chicken steamed dumplings were good also but I personally found the dough a little thicker than other steamed dumplings. Overall if you are in the area I recommend checking this place out !

dan dan noodle w/ pork - spicy!

I just visited for dinner tonight and felt quite motivated to leave a review... immediately. My high-level thoughts: - We were quoted 10-15 minutes of wait time upon arrival. Looking around, though, I noticed only half of the dining tables were occupied. Perhaps they simply didn't have enough staff on hand? - The menu is identical to the menu at their Woodland Hills location. Good mix of noodles, appetizers, rice dishes, and a small handful of dumplings and protein entrees. - We had the Black Pepper Beef and the Spicy Dan Dan Noodles with Pork. Both were quite good, ideal for sharing. Still, prices are decidedly high for the portion size, taste and quality. - This place is comparable to Northern Cafe, but - after trying both on several occasions - I think I prefer Northern Cafe. Compared to Din Tai Fung... there is no comparison, truly. Din Tai Fung reigns supreme. - Service was rushed and often times absent, but our server clearly had his hands full. - On our way out, we visited the restroom... and things took a turn for the worst. The larger stall featured a huge puddle under the toilet, remnants of food in the corner(???), and not a single sheet of toilet paper. Another lady came in after me and entered the smaller stall - I heard her say, "Jesus, no, I can't do this" and promptly came out. She didn't think the larger stall was much of an improvement. All in all, I don't think I'll be back to this particular location. I'd give the food a 4 out of a 5, but I bumped the review down to a 3 due to the overall experience - taking into account the service, the delays, and especially that restroom.

Dan Modern Chinese offers a bright, modern dining experience with a spacious dining room and an open kitchen that gives guests a transparent view of the cooks at work--always a nice touch. The tables are generously sized, perfect for dining with friends, and the presentation is clean and crisp, complete with beautiful Asian-style utensils. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, though not very knowledgeable about some menu items. Still, service overall was pleasant. Now to the food: I ordered two sets of handmade dumplings. My favorite by far was the pan-seared shrimp and pork dumplings--flavorful, well-cooked, and satisfying. You have the option to order 3 or 5, which is great depending on appetite. The second set, the spicy pork soup dumplings served in the silver pot, wasn't my favorite. While they had that classic soup burst (which hilariously splashed across the table on my first bite), the flavor fell short for me. The texture and filling weren't as enjoyable as the pan chili oil dumplings, and the seasoning didn't hit my expectations. Next up were the short rib beef egg rolls with hoisin sauce. Portion-wise, they were generous, and the filling was packed with short rib meat. Unfortunately, the wrapper was overly crispy and flaky--so much so that it fell apart like a burrito mid-bite. The hoisin sauce was also a bit too thick for my liking, which threw off the balance. The standout dish of the night was absolutely the Dan Dan noodles with beef--chef's kiss. It's easy to see why this is what people come here for. Perfectly seasoned, tender beef, shiitake mushrooms cooked just right, and broccoli that added a great texture and freshness. This dish alone is worth ordering. For drinks, I tried the Thai milk tea boba. The jasmine tea itself was comforting and great for the chilly weather, but the boba pearls were too sticky and overly chewy--not the texture I prefer. Overall: The ambiance and signature dishes shine, but some items missed the mark for me. I'd definitely return for the Dan Dan noodles and pan-seared dumplings, but I hope to see more consistency across the menu. Rating: 6.5/10

Inside (plus a cute and very well behaved dog)

While atmospherically "meh", great food and service! I've been aware of dan for many years, but have never given it a try; After walking by at the mall today, I decided today was the day! The hostess greeted us warmly and sat us right away. The space itself was a bit cafeteria-y in vibe with bright lights, high ceilings, and an exposed kitchen. Even with less than half of the restaurant sat, it was very loud and echoey. While not the most ideal date-night setting, the food and service to come made up for this; Our server Jesus was so kind and friendly, as was every other staff member we encountered. Intent on sampling as much as we could handle, we ordered the string beans, chili sauce pork and shrimp dumplings, pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings), pork belly buns, and the spicy oxtail soup. Everything was served hot and fresh, and everything was absolutely delicious. Additionally, we did not have to wait very long for the food to come out; I imagine they must have a very streamlined system in the kitchen. In the lacking landscape of Chinese restaurants in the South Bay beach area, dan certainly shines it's light! Since, trying the Manhattan Beach location, we have gone to the Playa Vista one as well; An equally great and consistent experience across their businesses!

Dan'm(odern) this was a miss for me... Walking in I really enjoyed the ambiance of the open modern look, it was spacious and inviting. We were seated immediately and the waiter was helpful in giving us some suggestions as it was our first time. On to the food, we tried quite a few different dishes and sadly it all fell short. First thing we noticed was how smalllll the portions are, even the dishes themselves were small which made it hard to stir the food without spilling. Second, the flavor was kind of bland or one note depending on which dish. The best thing we had was the short rib Dan mein and the beef roll. The texture of their noodles Is great, I loved the chew, but still not worth the ticket price in my opinion. And the beef roll was the most flavorful thing we got, and the light crisp on the outside was delicious, but I could get more bang for my buck elsewhere with better flavor notes as well. Overall, I do appreciate how easy it is to get to the place, parking can be hard I assume during busy shopping hours as it is near a mall, the staff was friendly, the interior nice, but I just wish the food actually hit, especially for the price tag. Happy eats, loves! ^_^

Today I Dined at Dan Modern Chinese restaurant and it was a blast! Clean and friendly environment! The service was exceptionally nice my server Zeeshan treated me like royalty which made me feel right at home! I had the crab fried rice which I highly recommend was tasty and a moderate size for the price! The food is delicious and their dumplings is to die for! Thanks again for a wonderful experience.

THIS PLACE WAS AMAZING! My baseline for xlb is din tai fung. It's fresh and consistent. Dan was so much better and I'm glad I took a chance. Their xlb has a ton of soup and it's easily contained. It had a ton of flavor and was the right texture. The beef and noodles were savory and the beef was super tender. The bok choy had tons of garlic flavor. I had a great first time here at both the Manhattan village and Dan. For a Sunday, I was able to get seated right away. It's a nice place to eat, shop and enjoy sprinkles cupcakes afterwards.

First of all this establishment is very clean, no dirty tables and once a table was done and leaving I saw someone cleaning the table immediately. My wife started off with the chicken homemade dumplings with chili oil (3) and then she tried the pan fried pork and shrimp dumplings (3) and she also had an order of the pan fried chicken dumplings (5) and she was very happy with the presentation and taste. I'd like to add that these were the freshest dumplings I've ever had. Me I tried the soup dumplings with chicken (3), after that I had the soup dumplings with chicken and shrimp 3) and I closed out with pan fried chicken dumplings (5) fried crispy. Amazing!!! My wife had the hot jasmine tea and that has refills with it. I just had a coke. Our server K.J. was amazing, he even served us doing his lunch break. I like this place and next time we are in LA I will definitely return.

We arrived during lunch hours and discovered they offer lunch specials, which were surprisingly affordable. I have to admit, I'm usually skeptical of very inexpensive lunch specials because, as we say where I'm from, "sometimes cheap ends up being expensive." In other words, I worry that lower prices might mean lower quality. That was absolutely not the case here. The biggest surprise of the meal was the dan dan noodles. Wow. They were absolutely delicious--easily one of the highlights of the meal. Honestly, everything we ordered was very good. The service from our server, Carlos, was great, and another server who was blond and spoke Spanish was even more attentive. Both were very friendly and helpful. We were so hungry when we arrived that we completely missed the "Wait to be Seated" sign and almost walked halfway through the restaurant before realizing our mistake--our apologies for that! The restaurant itself feels cozy and welcoming. I visit this shopping area quite often, and I'm really glad I discovered Northern Cafe because I will definitely be coming back from time to time. If you're looking for a delicious and affordable lunch, I highly recommend trying their lunch specials. The quality of the food far exceeded my expectations, and I don't think you'll regret giving this place a try.

We ordered the xiao long bao, broccoli beef, beef rolls, and chicken chow mein. The xiao long bao was excellent with a good amount of soup in each dumpling, and the beef rolls were probably my favorite item, especially dipped in a mix of black vinegar and soy sauce. The broccoli beef had a nice flavor, though I wished it had a little more meat. The chicken chow mein was the weakest dish for me: the noodle texture was great, but the overall flavor didn't stand out as much as I expected. Ordering was easy and the menu was very approachable thanks to the pictures. The restaurant is on the smaller side, which actually made it easier to get a server's attention when needed. Food also came out pretty quickly. The ambiance is straightforward and comfortable -- nothing fancy, just a solid neighborhood restaurant. Because it's small, you may have to wait if it gets busy, but tables seemed to turn over quickly thanks to the fast service. One practical tip: the portion sizes are bigger than they look.
