So, a couple of weeks ago, I'm pretty sure that Hell froze over. I, for what was quite possibly the first time in my life, actually uttered the words, "I'm kind of craving a cheeseburger." Hold. The. Yes, I know that this literally never happens and it is kind of a big deal because I am a sworn hater of all things burger... but here we are. The times, they are a-changin'. Neither of us had been to Dan's and a good, home cooked, greasy burger sounded pretty tasty, so in the car we hopped and off to Dan's we went. The inside of the restaurant is cute - I don't know what it looked like before, but I like the way it looks now. Cozy booths, open tables, even some bar seating - you're not wanting for seating options here and there is plenty of room. I ordered a small jalapeño cheeseburger with no lettuce or onions and curly fries. I really wanted some gravy, so they gave me a small cup on the side so I could dip my fries in it. Curly fries are delicious on their own, but I had a craving for country gravy and why not try all the things while I was here? That burger was a juicy taste explosion in my mouth. I mopped up the grease that dripped onto the paper with my burger and kept going. Before I knew it, my burger has disappeared and I really wanted another one. Those curly fries were frikkin' amazing and so was that gravy. Everything was fantastic - I was thrilled. Had I really been missing out on burgers all this time? The jury is still out on that one, but the answer is quite possibly yes. The only thing that makes me sad is that when I went through the drive-thru a few days later to order the same thing, they forgot to put the jalapeños on my burger. This place seems to be a victory of hype over substance, I'm really surprised at all the four and five star reviews. My friend and I finally decided to give Dan's a go, since it seemed to be always crowded. I had a burger and fries, both were extremely average, nothing special at all. My friend's chicken fingers looked good but I didn't order them because I don't like them with gravy, I need some bbq or honey mustard sauce. Service was good, atmosphere was blah. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Dan's is certainly a winner. I've been here once for breakfast- possibly the busiest meal of the day here. I had something along the lines of Huevos Rancheros, which came with a crudload of extras. My favorites of that meal included the friggin' delicious biscuits & gravy, and the salsa! Usually, we go during the "burgery" times of the day, so I was astounded to discover this wonderful salsa. I told them it needed to be on one of their burgers. Also, they have table service for breakfast until they transform to "order at the counter" style for lunch and beyond. But usually, we're here for lunch or dinner. In my pre-Weight Watcher days, I'd order the Chicken Strip Dinner which came with 4 delightful chicken strips, a large serving of gravy, and a smattering of delicious french fried. Don't even ask me how many points that is for WW. However, if you're not calorie conscious and just want some damn fine chicken strips- this is the place to come. Now, my typical order is a small hickory cheeseburger or a grilled chicken sandwhich. The hickory sauce on the burger adds a new flavor dimension of deliciousness. I really enjoy the varying sizes of burgers (S/M/L) and that the buns correspond to the size of the patty. My favorite sides would be the curly fries or the onion rings- which are great to split with a dining companion. Since the burgers come without sides included, you're free to choose from a variety on the menu- or not choose, if that's what you choose to choose. The shakes are alright, too. Two sizes for those- small and large (aka, like, super-jumbo). Mainly soft-serve with your choice of flavorings, but they do come out cold and creamy. Overall, I prefer this place to pulling into some drive thru when I'm craving some kind of fast food burger- especially when I know I'm going to get what I want with decent service to match. read more

Dan's is like a second home to me. The food is so simple yet so good, and the decor is modest but homey. I go there a couple nights a week and get the cheeseburger with curly fries or the grilled cheese and chips (only $2.50). The staff is mostly young people from the neighborhood, and they cook your food fresh when you order it. Eating at Dan's is like traveling back in time. I cannot think of a bad thing to say about Dan's on Manchaca. The burgers are always quality, the ingredients are good, and the chicken strip basket might be the best value in town. But.....Dan's is where I go for my breakfast fix. There is always a line..even on Tuesday at 7 A.M. That doesn't deter me, it lets me know that this place is dope. Hash browns are excellent, the biscuits are to die for, and the eggs are cooked by a person who has cooked thousands of dozens..Over medium-you got it Scrambled hard - you got it Good comfort food at a good price and it is a mecca for people watching. I see the cholos leaning, I see the grandmas with their hearing aids, and i see the thirty something year old stoners like me jonesing for some biscuits and gravy. Like many native Austinites, I've been going to Dan's since before I can remember. I suppose some of my high rating is due to the sheer nostalgia (the solid white uniforms and fantastically dated decor) that takes me back to a time when Austin was a much smaller town. Alas, those days are long gone, but Dan's continues to be an Austin institution. The food is, and has always been, consistently good. The cheeseburgers are probably Dan's signature, but other items like the Chicken Fried Steak, Onion Rings, and malts are also quite good. The service is friendly, although not artificial, and the prices simply cannot be beat. Expect to pay around $6 (for a burger, fries, and drink) that will leave you satisfied, if not stuffed. Breakfast is one of the best kept secrets about the place. If you want to eat like a native Austinite, eat here. You won't find any hipsters in the place, just A/C repairmen and families looking to get their day started. The biscuits (with or without gravy) are the best item on the menu along with the bacon, grits, and pancakes. I ordered the small cheeseburger, curly fries and a shake (half chocolate, half strawberry). The cheeseburger was tasty. I like that I could order such a small one. I also liked that the meat patty was thin. My husband's large burger had a much thicker patty, but I prefer thin. The curly fries were tasty and I much preferred them to the plain fries. Since we are flirting with actual fall/winter like temps tonight, we decided that we needed something hot that could stick with us. Insert Dan's..the perfect fit for our location and budget! We ordered 2 of the best chicken baskets I have gotten in a long time! The orders came with 4 huge fried breast tenders. Gravy comes with. You can either have fries or mashed potatoes. Do try the honey mustard with the chicken if you like that, because it was succulent! We enjoyed devouring here! It only cost us $13 for those two aforementioned meals and the drinks=very affordable, hot, and fast. I called in this order and it was done in 9 minutes. Everything on the menu is good in its own right. I just wanted to focus on this because we got this earlier today. When you walk in here, it is so cool to see families talking together about tonight's game or how their kids were doing in school. Dan's seems to be an Austin institution. My first visit and it struck me that it had that look of a relic from the late 60s or 1970s. Not a bad thing, but interesting within an Austin that is rapidly changing. Walking inside I noticed a lot of old-school Austinites in there. Quite a few older gentleman with Cowboy hats. I imagined them living close by and coming here for many many years and sitting in the same spot and ordering the same thing over and over because it's a delicious consistent burger! And it was a delicious burger. I am betting it's consistent too. I'll be back to find THAT out! I ordered the medium cheeseburger (everything plus mustard), onion rings and a water. After about a 5 minute wait for them to cook the burger, my number was called and I brought it to my table and unwrappped it. Just glancing at the burger it reminded me of Sonic or Whataburger where the veggies are BELOW the meat. That was where the similarity ended. First thing that excited me was the shredded lettuce. I HATE big leafs of lettuce on burgers and sandwiches. All of the veggies impressed me. You could taste the clean freshness of them. I can go either way with mustard or mayo on a burger. Never both. But I usually add ketchup to either of those selections. Accomplished this at the table. Ooooh! They have Tabasco too! Now the onion rings aren't my style. They are the type that look too perfect if you know what I mean. The batter is flat and perfectly formed. I like the type of rings that have the flaky batter. Now you may enjoy them and that's okay! No thrills or frills, get there early or you're waiting, breakfast for champions. You want pancakes? They have them in only one flavor, TASTY! You want biscuits and gravy? Oh yes, they have that too, WITH sausage. Walk in and you're teleported to the 80's, with old people everywhere, girl scouts in front selling their crack... i mean cookies, and a menu with what you'd expect from a no non-sense diner, no fancy pumpkin chocolate strawberry pancakes with organic half-fat whip cream here folks. I'll second every sentiment about here about the true value of Dan's being its breakfasts, not its burgers. Not that I'm not a fan of their burgers, which are the classic diner/grill type. If I get a burger, I spring for cheese, jalapeños, and bacon, which comes out a reasonable $6. A large onion rings or curly fries, both tasty, is $3 more, and I've always liked their shakes. None of these really stand up to the best the city has to offer, especially with the recent trend of upscale places like Hopdoddy, but if you want a regular proletarian burger meal without any fuss or lines, this is your place. However, their breakfast is a great value: excellent and very reasonably priced. I usually get the #8, which is 2 eggs any style, 2 moderately sized pancakes, and 3 slices of respectable bacon or 2 pieces of sausage for all of $6. Add a biscuit for $1 and grab some decent coffee for less than $2 more, and you can walk away from an extremely satisfying morning meal for $11 with tip. Try doing that at Kerbey! Or check out 3 great breakfast tacos for $6, with solid salsa alongside. The staff are surprisingly vigilant about coffee refills and so forth; maybe it's because of the huge amount of eagle-eyed elderly who show up for breakfasts. Old people know their deals. I've dabbled in some of their other menu items like the chicken strips or the fish sandwich; I've never gotten the chicken-fried steak or any omelets but I'm sure they're good. As a burger place it does the job, as a less-well-known breakfast place it makes you appreciate the spirit of what seems like the "old Austin" of a few decades ago, and offers an enduring alternative to more crowded places up the street. read more

This is my benchmark for thin, traditional Texas hamburger's. Dan's does a superb job of creating a traditional burger. They start with thin patties of good quality ground beef, and cook them on a hot griddle. An ample helping of American cheese is added, and the usual condiments, which are always nice and fresh. That's the recipe for a burger at hundreds of spots across the state, but somehow Dan's does it better than anyone else. The meat is hot, seared, and perfectly juicy. The cheese melts but maintains its integrity. And the vegetables complement the beef and cheese without overpowering the flavor. My choice is the medium double-meat, double-cheese. The proportion of meat-to-bun is perfect on this burger. Sides are good here as well, but that's not why you go to Dan's. You go for the burger. And if you love traditional hamburgers, you won't find a better one than at Dan's. Highest recommendation. read more

I know the various locations of Dan and Fran Hamburgers have been closed. There are only a couple open and I know the story of how Dan and Fran came about. Since they did a remodeling of Dan's Hamburgers it looks like a clean wanna-be 1950s diner. I haven't been inside so I can't say how it looks like. I've used the drive-thru because I had to go to class. The drive thru seems hard to get to because it comes into one entrance. If you come from north on Manchaca, it's easier and the best way to go. Either way you might be blocking traffic or you have to do a three point turn in the parking lot. As for the burgers, they are cooked well and so are the fries or onion rings. I've tasted better burgers than Dan's. If a friend of mine wanted to go to Dan's, I wouldn't object to it. read more

I guess I'm just preaching it to the choir here... I had Dan's for the first time tonight, and I'm a fan! After driving by it numerous times for the last two and a half years I decided to stop in and check it out. I don't care that the building is old and 'looks dingy' though I didn't really feel that it did. I came for the food and boy was it good. I got the Large Hickory Cheeseburger with jalapenos added. It had lots of lovely peppers, but they could have put just a little more hickory sauce on it. My fries were nice and hot. My sweetie got a medium hickory with a large chocolate malt and said she should have done it the other way around... not because the malt was bad - it was just bigger than she could deal with. I tasted it and it was yum! Her son had a large cheeseburger and inhaled it! Three of us ate for $20, we were in and out (around 6pm) in about 30-40 minutes, and we were all stuffed to the gills. Sunday night dinner included the basics of burgers, fries and soft drinks, although they offer a lot of other items, such as thinly sliced onion rings, curly fries, fish and chicken baskets, and thick milk shakes. Call me weird, but I felt at home when I walked in here for the first time today. Dan's has the kind of old school, blue collar working class diner feel of the places I used to eat in when I was a kid in the Northeast. You know: no frills, kinda grungy but with really good food. A place that's PACKED with working people at lunchtime speaks for itself. I came over here today to pick up lunch, and was glad I was on the bike. No spots to park a car, but a small space to squeeze in a motorcycle. Took about 15 minutes from ordering to be handed a HUGE burger (the medium, I can imagine how big the large would be) which I ran back to work with and scarfed down. I then spent the rest of the afternoon fighting burger coma. I understand the breakfasts are some of the best in town, so I'll check it out on Monday. read more

First visit to Dan's and will probably be the last. Given the line at the drive thru I thought it was going to be something very special. First very friendly staff. Burgers are average but there are certainly better in Austin. I do like the choices of small med and large patties. The French fries were crisp and non greasy so it's surprising that the home made onion rings were the exact opposite. Way too greasy..to the point that they were not edible. :( the crowning point was that they forgot half the order: two hot chocolates and a brownie. The Dan's burger is a personal favorite of mine. The flavor of the meat is just right and unique. Dan's does not load up the meat with crazy amount of spices in order to make a statement. The meat blend itself is the statement and it works perfectly with the other components of the burger. You have to understand what Dan's is all about. This is a basic, old school, Texas style burger joint. The meat patties are not thick so they will cook better and brown more on the flat top. Need more meat, order more patties. Personally I like a thinner patty which is why I don't go to places like Fuddruckers. Sandwiches are all about ratios and those manhole cover patties at Fuddruckers (and other places - even local) throw the ratio off in a big way. And for those who say the food prep is a little slow? They don't make anything until you order and the patties have to cook for something like 7 minutes. So if you like this style of burger just be patient, it will be worth it. I order a small cheeseburger with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, bacon and jalapenos. To quote Chandler Bing: "That would be perfection!" And honestly if your favorite style of burger is one with fennel and habanero and weighs 16 ounces, please don't visit or review Dan's. Best value burger around hands down! First time visit after the renovation for phone in burgers to go. This place is running a tight ship, very clean and many employees scurrying around making sure everything is right. Jalapeño cheese burger, double meat jalapeño cheese burger and large fries for 15 bucks. After getting home the burgers were still almost too hot to eat and the fries were hot and fresh.
