For the past 10 years my family and I have always gone to Pyeong Chang Tofu House, which is down the street. The neighborhood has picked up and it's gotten a lot busier than it used to be. The wait is usually pretty long, which makes it tough with kids. It's also kind of a chaotic atmosphere being so busy and tightly packed into a small space. My wife finally convinced me to try something new. She found Daol Tofu after looking online. I wish I would have tried earlier. The food is just as good, the wait is not too bad, atmosphere is much more civilized, and the staff are all really nice and personable. We ordered 2 of the combinations (one spicy pork and one bulgogi). We also ordered a kimchi pancake (jeon) and steamed dumplings (mandu). It was way too much food for 2 people. 2 people could easily share a combination. We had rice bowls for lunch the next day and still have a full container of sundubu for another meal. Everything was very tasty, except maybe for the spicy pork (not spicy). The bulgogi was pretty standard bulgogi. The dumpling were fresh, but not amazing. For me, the draw of Daol is the affordability for a tasty meal. I'll definitely order again when I need a feast! read more

Parking isn't too bad- there are metered parking and free parking in the neighborhood streets (3mins walk). Service was kind of slow. There were like 12 banchan dishes! The kimchi was average, nothing really stood out. Love the variety but it really wasn't amazing. But their portion sizes are crazy! We were so stuffed after this meal. What we ordered: Kalbi (lunch price is only $15)- this was good, tender and thick cut of meat. Perfectly marinated. 8/10 [Vegan and Vegetarian] Vegetarian kimchi tofu soup- flavorful but a bit watery and not too salty. Needed more spice and kimchi flavor. 6/10 Tofu and vegetable bimbibap- soooo many veggies this was sooo good until I got to the bottom and saw a puddle of oil which didn't seem so appealing anymore 8/10 Japchae- the best way to cook japchae is to cook the noodles and let it set and then mix in the sauce, they decided to stir fry the noodles therefore it wasn't springy and all I taste is soy sauce. Oh for vegetarian option, ask them to remove the beef. 6/10 Overall, it's a good place for lunch. I lived in LA Koreatown for 7 years and since moving back to the Bay, I've been so disappointed by the Korean food. Daol Tofu is the first Bay Area Korean restaurant that made me feel "at home" like back in Ktown. Upon walking in, I felt like I had been transported back to LA. The banchan selection was fresh and plentiful. My favorite is the soy sauce potato dish. We ordered two items: Bulgogi Dolsot Bibimbap and Soon Dubu. Both were excellent, particularly the bibimbap. It also comes in an extra large portion size and these two dishes are more than enough for 3 adults. Great value, authentic flavor, and friendly service. read more

Had a really great lunchtime experience this past Saturday. I found street parking pretty quickly in a residential area around the corner on 43rd and was allowed my choice of seating when I walked in. Highlights? Service is really attentive and friendly as well; the restaurant interior has a clean, minimalist, modern look without being cold and sterile; the menu covers all the bases and even includes some house specials without being overwhelming; prices are very reasonable; the ban chan spread is quite impressive; I received a 10% off the next visit coupon when the waitress brought the bill; and, their japchae and bulgogi bibimbap, my two favorite Korean dishes, are delicious! Since my first visit I've been back with another friend for dinner. She got one of the soondubu-jjigae (soft tofu stews) and was very happy with it. When I finally seated, nobody cared!! I told the waitresses(3 of them , different ones) that I was ready to order, but NO ONE helped me and let me wait 15 mins. I wanted to order a bulgogi & tofu soup combo and I asked if I could customize my tofu soup and she said yes. But I still ended up with a combo and a separate soup so I got way too much food. I'm this location there used to be another Korean restaurant that was like my home. My sister and I would go twice a month, on the regular, and the owner would bring batches of her old kimchi out for us. It was perfect. So when that resultant closed and this new one opened, I sort of refused to go. Nothing could compare. But I finally went and it was actually quite good. The seafood pancake was just so nicely crisped and the sauce it came with what a little more interesting than your regular joint. The dolbi, the dolsot bibimbap was also quite nice though I think the sauce it comes with was a little bland. The kimchi jjigae was the star for me, sour and bright. The banchan was quite nice. I though the kimchi could have been fermented a bit more, it was that fresh kimchi that has no sparkle. Service was great! Young staff that as friendly and helpful. So, just two weeks after going for the first time, I'm going for my 2'd time. Maybe this will be my spot again? We shall see. Prices seem fair. And they have outdoor seating too. read more

FIrst, I saw this place because it said it was a hot & new business. Came here for Korean casserole and immediately thought, hmm... this place looks familiar. I believe this used to be another korean, family owned place that also served korean casseroles... can't quite remember the name of it... Anyway, came in on a super rainy day and had a massive craving for korean casserole. Casserole's is essentially a pre-packed hot pot full of meats, veggies, noodles, and etc. It's the fried rice of soups. They're normally big enough to serve 3-4 people... so brace yourself if you and your hunny, alone, decide to go with this option. We ordered the bulgogi casserole. The meat itself was super tender and they were very generous with what they gave you. The flavors of the soup were pretty good as well... I did, however, get turned off by a huge lump of perilla leaf that I thought was a type of choy at first.... The perilla leaf is very good for you, but it leaves a weird taste when cooked in the soup. Here are my suggestions: - Opt to get the perilla leaves on the side - Ask for the casserole spicy - Ask for 1 or 2 raw eggs to mix into the soup as it's cooking! The location is close to MacArthur bart where I often go to pick up my boyfriend from the SF commute, so the likelihood of me coming back here is pretty likely. I had the Tofu Dolsot which was served very hot in a special hot pot that crisped the rice at the bottom making some delicious crunch rice bits as I mixed it all up. I just got back from dinner at Daol Tofu with friends and the food was amazing!! As the waitress loaded our table with banchan, I was surprised at how many little dishes they were serving us. It felt like the magician that keeps pulling the unending ribbon from his hat. This was surprising because in my experience, Korean restaurants normally give you 5-6 small dishes. Here at Daol, the little Banchan plate filled half of our table with a rainbow of delicious variety. I ordered beef bulgogi with soup and the bulgogi was cooked just the way that I like it. The tofu soup was very flavorful and filled with spice. Overall, I feel like the food is very authentic and tasty. I love how much variety my meal offered. I was cheerfully greeted by an older Korean woman, who ended up being the only server at the restaurant for the rest of the night. This might be my new favorite Korean restaurant! I don't know how I've never tried this place. Banchan galore! Usually at least one dish is off but every dish we ordered was so good! We ordered two combo dishes for the three of us and it was plenty. You can pick any of the soup options on the menu for the combo. Late afternoon lunch. I'm glad they offered the lunch special up to 2:00 pm, these range from $9 to $13. The dinner ranges are slightly higher, from $12 up to $24. I ordered the Kalbi box lunch and the beef was tender, marinated and grilled just the way I like it. I'm not sure how much large portion the dinner sizes for the main entree but the lunch was generous. The banchan sides were also offered in the lunch special but the more the better. The banchan was not too garlicky and the kim chee did not knock your socks off. I know Koreans like their food spicy but I'm more a lightweight in that department. I think the food can be more spicy and flavorful if requested. I will have to come back and try out the extensive menu. In this area there are alot of Korean restaurants so it very competitive trying to get the customers to visit. Originally came for the Korean restaurant right next to it called Sahn Maru, but since it was closed on Tuesdays we decided to come here instead. So glad that we did! I believe Daol opened up only a couple weeks ago so I didn't know about it until today. The lady that runs the front was super nice and welcoming. They start you off with 11 different side dishes (banchan) that are endlessly refillable, as most banchans are, so ask away! We ordered the beef and tofu soup and the Kalguksu (huge portions). My friend seemed to enjoy her bowl of noodles and I thought the tofu soup was comparable to Pyeongchang Tofu House's up the street.
