HOW HAVE I NOT REVIEWED THIS GEM?!?! This is my hands down go to spot for Korean food in Oakland (not KBBQ). I've tried so many spots in Oakland and Daol has THE BEST banchan and homey/tasty dishes. Also their seafood pancake is FIREEE. I honestly can't comment on much more than their tofu soup (which is bomb) as I order it every single time I come BUT we've tried other dishes. Their bibimbop is standard. As well as their other noodle soup dishes (their mul naeong myeon is really good and refreshing). Another great Korean restaurant down Telegraph Ave. Daol Tofu is located in Oakland's Koreatown, and it is just a 15 minute bus ride away from where I live in Berkeley. I want to go back to Koreatown to check out the other restaurants-there's so many! I tried their kimchi bokkeumbap (kimchi fried rice) and ja-chae along with their delicious banchan-they had lotus root here! I checked with the server before trying the two dishes, and he said they were gluten-free. But always make sure to ask, just in case. Sometimes the servers are misinformed, or do not know what gluten is! If you've never had kimchi fried rice, you're missing out! It's super flavorful and has the perfect amount of spice. I used to not like kimchi, but it's grown on me! Ja-chae is another safe choice that doesn't contain gluten. Most noodles contain gluten, but ja-chae is made from sweet potato starch, so it is usually gluten-free! I love the crunch of the vegetables that come with it. Why am I making ridiculous disco party fingers at my table?!? Because this place is insanely yummy - the best Korean food that I've had in the Bay Area. I'm kicking myself that I haven't come here sooner. I rarely give five stars to any restaurant but here I go. Hats off to you Daol Tofu! I'm a Korean-American whose grown up eating lots of Korean food and going to many Korean restaurants but this place is the best Korean restaurant in the Bay Area and rivals the ones in Southern California (the mecca of Korean food)! First the food, I ordered the following: - Seafood pancakes (which is one of my faves), 5/5- this is a savory pancake with lots of octopus and shrimp pieces, green onions and thinly slices carrots which is pan fried. This was cooked perfectly leaving a crispy outside and chewy center and the accompanying sauce was deeelish. - Grilled mackerel 5/5- normally don't order this dish but my toddler daughter was intrigued by the picture of this and asked for it so we got it. And this dish was also prepared perfectly with a crisp outside and soft, somewhat salty white flesh. You just need to be careful of the pesky fish bones, which seemed mostly removed but some were still present. This fish was tasty and paired well with the perfectly prepared sticky white rice. (I digress but it's absolutely crazy how so many Korean restaurants make their white rice too dry - this is the staple/foundation of any Korean meal. Making white rice too dry is like using sand as the foundation of a house.) - Yukgaejang, spicy shredded beef stew with glass noodles (which are made from sweet potatoes), green onions and eggs, 5/5 - perfectly seasoned and steaming. This was great for the chilly, windy day in Oakland. The complimentary ban chan (Korean side dishes) that are just okay at many of the Korean restaurants in the Bay Area was really spot on here! Then to top off a great meal which is the main focus of most of my reviews, our servers Ju and Fabiola were attentive and accommodating without being intrusive, which is a hard balance to achieve. And in celebration of Mother's Day, we got three complimentary homemade round mochi balls with the most delightful bean-powder like filling that made my stomach dance for joy! The whole meal was $73 (including tip), which is a good price for Korean food, which is normally somewhat pricey. Is this place Brigadoon (a mystical town that appears every 100 years)?!? What's not to love about Daol tofu? They have high quality banchan (side dishes) that can be refilled as many times as you want, perfectly marinated galbi and bulgogi (beef dishes), and really clean tasting soondubu (tofu soup). I loved its predecessor (casserole house rip) but Daol certainly does not disappoint. I have friends who lived in Seoul say that the tofu soup here has the closest taste to the tofu soups in Korea -- not made too salty to cater to American taste buds. They have a variety of tofu soups to choose from. All have been solid! Tofu is creamy and soft and tastes freshly made. I know the decor won't inspire you (looks outdated compared to Pyongchang tofu house just down the street) but if you want excellent, authentic Korean food without the fanfare (and the line), you must give this place a shot! read more

I've never seen something so unprofessional. And I'm supposedly supposed to get a credit back on my credit card in 5 to 7 days. I tried calling the restaurant and of course nobody answered I called five times. I don't understand why the restaurant has an option to cancel. Why going through all the effort of going to the menu and decide what you want to eat and paying with your credit card and Your order is canceled. I don't see how that's different is sitting down at a restaurant for 30 minutes after you order and have the server come up to you and say hey get out of the restaurant we're not going to make your food. This restaurant is already overpriced and dirty and the food is very mediocre but we were desperate. Now we have nothing to eat. This just reconfirmed that this is definitely the absolute last time we will ever go near this restaurant. Daol is food for the SOUL! Definitely something that ol' Temescal needed and I'm so happy to have taken advantage of it! Located in the beautiful neighborhood of Temescal in Oakland, Daol Tofu is a new Korean barbecue restaurant that offers up some seriously yummy Korean eats! My friend and I tried this new spot out a few weeks ago and we were really pleased! The parking is super limited, but we were able to find a close enough parking space that was within walking distance. The interior décor is nothing too special but it's very inviting nonetheless. It has a very comforting and homey feel to it which really put us at ease. The seating is a little tight and they sat us right next to another couple who were having a serious convo. I'm not one to eavesdrop, but we were sitting so close to them that I could practically hear their whole conversation. It was a little uncomfortable but it didn't last too long as we engaged in our own conversation during our time there as well. The service was great and our server checked in on us and gave us a few recommendations while we were there. She was also really good about refilling our water glasses super promptly. We decided to order the Bulgogi Dolsot Bibimbop (meat and vegetables over rice in a hot stone bowl) and the BBQ Short ribs. The entrees came with a delicious bowl of side soup! The side of soup was very tasty and had wonderful flavor! They also gave us a boat load of banchan (side dishes to accompany the entrees)! I mean, there was banchan for DAYS! The server even asked us if we wanted more, but we barely even had any room on our table, so we politely refused. The bulgogi meat in the bibimbop was very yummy, but the rice was a little overcooked. This could have been due to us not paying attention and mixing up the ingredients late, but I was a little bit disappointed because it added a burnt taste to the dish. In addition, the plate in general lacked flavor even after we added sauce and mixed in some of the banchan. The real winners here were those scrumptious short ribs! OMG, them thangs were fingerlickin' good! It came delivered in a hot sizzling pan, just teasing us until we finally took a bite. MAN, they were just fall off the bone tender and packed with amazing flavor! My mouth was watering more than the actual dish itself! I would come back here JUST to get those short ribs if it were for nothing else. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and were so happy to find a new Korean barbecue spot to now frequent. Overall, this is a great new place to enjoy some fine Korean cuisine! I think I will give the bibimbop another try in the future, but I will def be chowin' down on those spare ribs and trying some other items off of their menu the next time that I'm here. Gone with the old and in with the new! I met up with an old friend of mine in Berkeley last night. Since we both wanted Korean food for dinner, I suggested we go to the Casserole House on Telegraph Avenue. But when we arrived, we found out it was replaced by Daol Tofu & Korean BBQ. I was a bit disappointed because Suki, the owner of the Casserole House, was always nice to me. Last time I saw her, she had mentioned she's getting a bit tired from running a restaruant. Hopefully, she's enjoying her well-deserved retirement somewhere. We walked in at around 8:00pm and was immediately greeted by the new owner, a Korean lady in her 50s. She seated us at a table at the back of the restaurant. The interior had gone through some renovations. It looked more modern with brighter lighting. The place was about half full. It appeared we just missed the dinner rush because there were quite a few tables/booths that needed to be cleaned and cleared. To my surprise, American pop music was played in the background instead of K-pop. The owner, who doubled up as the only server, brought us some hot barley tea and menus. We were both hungry so it didn't take us long to order the following: - Spicy Pork and Seafood Soondubu Combo ($20) - Ham N Cheese Dolsot Bibimbap ($14) Yes, that's right! HAM N CHEESE DOLSOT BIBIMBAP! While we waited for our food, the owner brought us a total of 11 banchans. We sampled all of them and found they ranged from average to above average taste wise. About 15 minutes after we ordered, my friend's ham and cheese dolsot bibimbap arrived. It came crackling hot. Everything looked like a normal dolsot bibimbap except there were diced ham and shredded cheese in the bowl. Upon further inspection, it was determined that the diced ham was actually Spam. When she started mixing everything together, I could see the beautifully burnt rice in the bottom of the bowl. After trying it, she said it was pretty tasty. Both dishes of my combo came a few minutes later. Contrary to my friend's dish, mine didn't arrive sizzling or bubbling hot. The soondubu was a full size portion. The owner cracked an egg into it tableside and the color of the white turned instantaneously so the temperature was hot enough. It came with three shrimps, a mussel on a half shell, two small clams, some frozen seafood, and a copious amount of tofu. Taste wise, I thought it was okay. However, the spiciness was lacking despite the fact that I asked for the eye-blinding level. Also, I thought the tofu wasn't soft enough. The spicy pork was presented on a small sizzling platter. As noted before, it wasn't sizzling on arrival. After trying a piece, the temperature was okay. Taste wise, it was pretty good. The pork was succulent and had just the right amount of fat. Spiciness was at the right level. Kudos to the chef for not overcooking it. I thought we received very good service. Despite being the only person working the floor, the owner hustled and took care of our needs and requests. She was friendly and engaging even though her English was somewhat limited. At the end of our meal, she gave us a couple coupons for our next visit. Overall, I thought our experience at Daol was decent. They still have a few minor kinks to work out but I'm certain they will figure them out soon. I'm giving them 3.5 stars rounding it up to four. I'll be back again. Yummy eats and friendly service! I came on Saturday for lunch and the restaurant was busy but no wait. We ordered the galbi and tofu soup combo and between me and my bf we were full! The ban chan didn't come out instantly, since there was only one lady serving, taking orders, clearing.. but she worked surprisingly fast and always gave us service with a smile. I would def recommend the galbi, sizzling hot and good portioned. I'm looking forward to coming back during weekdays for their lunch boxes! I came here to come to Casserole House and was disappointed at first to see that it is now Daol Tofu! Can't believe I caught a new restaurant in its soft opening without knowing though. The setup inside is the same as before but it seems a bit brighter and cleaner than before. The owners changed unfortunately. I kind of miss the elderly Korean ladies who were so sweet. What I miss the most though is the complimentary veggie pancake. That was my favorite part about this place but they don't have it anymore unfortunately. Warm and satisfying are the words that spring to mind when describing this establishment. The decor is simple and clean. The waitress is alone and efficient. And the food... is excellent!!! The panchan is fresh and savory. The kimchi is the perfect wetness where the Napa cabbage is doused with electric red chili sticking in all the nooks and crannies. I am about to rave about the rice, yes this rice is perfect. I opened the metal top and the aroma transported me to heaven. Ya know it is good rice when you are using the Korean metal chopsticks and it is no hassle to eat the rice. Ya know, if the rice is dry and you can't get any except to shovel it from the bowl. In the heart of Temescal, this place has been on my list since it opened. Went for lunch and we pretty much had our pick of tables. Before we could even open the menu a warm toasty hot tea was delivered followed by a little salad. The lunch boxes are way too fun. I had the spare ribs and my companion had the steak. Both were really good, seasoned well, with generous servings of meat. The lady waiting on us was very attentive, checked in on us including bringing a full tea pot (my catnip) and asking if we wanted the sides refilled. We were full to bursting in the best way. A friend took me here for dinner and we shared the kimchi and ham sausage (i.e., spam and hot dogs) casserole. It had a slice of American cheese on top too. My friend told me the story behind this dish -- a mish-mash of Korean and American ingredients, the latter which were leftovers from the American military, during and after the Korean War -- and mentioned that beans are also a common ingredient as well (missing from this version). The greens you see in the picture are perilla leaves, which we both found to be a bit overpowering in the stew. However, it was very tasty (I happen to like spam and hot dogs xD), and had enough leftovers for another 2 meals (with some additional noodles and water). There are also a lot of banchan, including pieces of veggie pancakes! Pretty empty on a Sunday night; we were the only table until one other party entered halfway through our meal. Sadly, I am giving Daol Tofu 3 stars because my most recent experience was not good. Daol tofu was my favorite Korean restaurant in East Bay. I love the variety of banchan they provide. Every time I go, I order the soft tofu soup. This recent time, the soft tofu soup with beef was so bland it tasted like chicken broth without any salt. I had to ask for salt packets to make the soup slightly more enjoyable. We order it medium spicy and it was not spicy at all. Overall, super disappointing. The service was also really slow since there were only 2 workers and the place was surprisingly packed. Normally when I come, there are only a few tables seated. I would give Daol Tofu another try.
