With the family opting to sleep in on Saturday and myself heading to a local gym by car as outdoor running in Chicago during winter is poorly advised the combination of transportation and empty roads even after an early morning workout finally led me to the last old school Chicago Donut institution on my "must visit" list - Dat Donut all the way down in Chatham. Arriving just after 7:00am to find the store largely empty save for a vagrant sleeping at the long bar hoping to avoid the cold and greeted by the lone clerk, protected by half-inch glass I was informed that 'fresh donuts would be ready in 5 minutes' and opting to wait it would be exactly four before I placed my order - a mere $8.75 for five selections that could have, and did, feed five people. Far from the refined, upscale Doughnuts offered downtown and tilted more to what you get at Abundance or Old Fashioned the Strawberry Yeasted choice would be my only selection that had been sitting in the case and on par with Dunkin both in taste and texture I moved on to better things with a pair of toothsome cake donuts, one chocolate and the other blueberry, before progressing to the items that have made Dat a destination - the hubcap sized Apple Fritter and BIG DAT - the former dense, crispy, and loaded with apples while the later is shockingly light, much like a Krispy Kreme, and equally sweet - an experience worth the drive and the calories, at least once. read more

We came here to get donuts for a group of teachers. I love that they are open so early and have a good selection of donuts and sandwiches at a reasonable price. I wish there were more options but who needs all of the frills?! We got a big order of coffee and we loved the cute container that it came in. It was easy to carry which was important because we had so many donuts to carry. Parking is easy in the lot or on the side street which is always a plus. I love that this is a black owned restaurant because it's important that small business reflect the community that they are in. If you're in town and on the south side go support this wonderful group of humans and get your caffeine fix! read more

These doughnuts are addictive. It's great to watch them being made. They melt in your mouth. Order in a flat box so frosting will stay on.

It has been a while since I have been there but I read an article claiming another donut shop in the burbs as the best in Illinois for national donut day. Dat Donut is the best. Fluffy fresh donuts with great frostings. Strawberries or pineapple in the icing not just flavoring. Great prices too, way better than any north side shop or chain. I just wish they would open a location on the north side so I could get them more often. You won't be disappointed. read more

These are really good donuts! They remind me of Krispy Kreme, but I would say even better. I tried the chocolate frosted and strawberry frosted. Both were good. I took a pass on the jumbo-sized options...entirely too many calories!! The area where this place is located is a bit sketchy, so be careful when you go. I was in and out in under four minutes and had someone asking me for money in that short amount of time. Definitely not a place to hang out at, but the donuts are surely worth the visit. read more

Donuts here are "Ohhh...Sooo...Fresh! And just in case you didn't know...its open 24Hrs! This means you can fresh donuts anytime of the day. Nice tasting cinnamon rolls with lots of cinnamon! Has a little place for seating but mainly people come here for takeout! Been here several times from when I use to work in the area but haven't been here for a while. Good to get a chance to have "Dat Donut" taste back on my palate! Only drawback is finding a place for parking when it is busy. read more

These are good but not amazing. They have your standard flavors at a pretty good price. The novelty item at Dat donut is the big dat donut which is about 8 inches in diameter. The big dat donut can easily feed 2-4 people and is just under 4 dollars. The apple fritter was probably my favorite and reminded me of a funnel cake. They are open pretty early, but you can't have delivery until 10:45 am. read more

Amazing donuts. Old Fashioned Donuts is known for the Texas glazed and the apple fritter, so we had to try these king-sized creations. However, we also ordered two glazed, one buttermilk cake, one caramel glazed cake, one chocolate long john, and one chocolate glazed for tomorrow's breakfast. I thought the Texas glazed had a flavor similar to funnel cake. It had a very homemade taste compared to Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' Donuts (yuk). The apple fritter was our favorite. It had a crispy exterior with chunks of apples and plenty of cinnamon inside. After eating half of each, we were stuffed. We will have the remainder to look forward to tomorrow. Although these donuts are terrific, the store's neighborhood is most decidedly not. Old Fashioned Donuts is a few blocks south of the Roseland neighborhood on the far south side. We ended up getting our breakfast to go. These donuts are worth the gunshot wound. read more

After hitting Calumet Fisheries for dinner last week, I stopped by to grab a Dat with some friends and was happy that this experience was better than the first. Strangely, I came by last time at 9:30 AM on a Sunday and the donuts weren't that fresh...this time, I came by on a Tuesday at 8 PM and they were exceptionally fresh. I asked the woman behind the counter when they were made; 6 PM is when a batch came out, so don't be discouraged that you'll get hosed if you show up here during the evening. These guys seems to turn donuts out at all hours of the day (helpful since they are open 24 hours). The Dat is at least four regular glazed donuts in total; it's so massive that you almost have to get that to tell the story to friends. But this was worth it and for like $3.50 I could feed myself and another adult pretty easily! read more

My mom insisted on us going to place, despite my dislike for donuts. But I am so happy that she took me! Again, I am not a donut fan. I actually don't remember the last time I ate a donut. I tried the classic glaze doughnut and the caramel cake and both were delicious. The glaze doughnut was light and fluffy. I warmed it up and it basically melted in my mouth. I really enjoyed the caramel cake one as well. The bread was heavier, but crumbly which was nice. Overall, I give it an A! read more

The donuts were good. They had a giant donut there that looked like five donuts in one - it was huge...lol! My husband and I ordered breakfast sandwiches and were a little disappointed. We could see them being prepared in the kitchen and prayed with fingers crossed that the young lady washed her hands before starting the prep (she didn't have gloves on...).
