Now this is my kinda sandwich place. First off, Dave is a cool ass dude. Not only is he from Boston, which is near and dear to my heart, but he is legit just a down right friendly guy! We had a great chat reminiscing about all things that are boston and he took the time to get to know us and welcome us back. The place itself is really low key with some pretty random decor. Loved the star wars and family guy pictures haha but over all, u can tell this place is all about the food and not about the ambiance. And man are they about the food!!!! The sandwiches we had were no joke. I got the rosemary turkey (which is one of their best sellers according to Dave) and my bf had the surf and turf. So freakin delicious - i want to eat that rosemary bread everyday of my life!!! My only tiny gripe is that I desperately needed a napkin and none of the napkin holders had been filled. When describing this place there are not enough words in my limited diction that do this place justice. So I will let my multiple personalities fill you in. The fat guy says, " Wow quality meats from pastrami to sausage. No real fat on the meat. When you order pastrami here you expect it to have some fat. However Dave orders in his words the filet mignon of pastrami. That's good for some but not for a lardo like me. Sausage is also fresh. Mmmm sausage." The anal retentive accountant says, "The ambience is how should a say delightfully tacky. Two chairs, a dated 10 inch television, blue green walls, and the Super Bomber Man game in the back. This place needs some revision however if you're not as OCD as me then you'll appreciate the homely feel. Also he sometimes runs out of ingredients. It's better to call ahead of time just to make sure you don't waste your time. This really ticks me off but better to live another day to eat a quality sandwich than to eat at Subway." The health nut/gym rat says, "A nice balance of fresh organic fruits used for their smoothies. Dave also explains that if you are a woman you could eat his sandwiches into your third trimester. That is how picky he is with the quality of his meats and fruits. When you are done with your workout they have some selections that are good to your gut and help you maintain rock hard abs like the roast beef." My boss introduced me to Dave's Chillin-N-Grillin over a year ago and my first sandwich was the Tuna Melt with a slice of pastrami. I was in love with the sandwich so much that I continued to order it the next few I went there. Dave and his staff are very friendly and Dave always uses the best ingredients and fresh bread as well. I also recommend trying the Tuna Melt, the meatball sandwich, the Chicken Garden Salad melt, and the Pilgrim (if it's being served). Dave is so so so so so cool and he makes THE BEST SANDWICHES I'VE EVER HAD. My favorites are: Tuna Melt (omg soooo good) and the Hummus/Veggie with Feta (pretty much what I get every time I'm not sure what I want) This is hands down the best...sandwich...ever. Don't listen to the negative reviews. It's not a dirty place, it's very clean and the workers are all local Eagle Rock heads and they are super super sweet! For example, one time my roommate didn't have cash on him and one of the girls working there was so sweet about it, not demanding the money right away, and letting him take his time to go get it for her. LOVE the people that work there, especially Dave. He is soooo cool, man. And I gotta tip my hat to the Rainbow Sherbet Chiller. Yum yum yum yum. It's not "fast" food. I heard the hype and thought... really? Well, I'm here to tell you that I'm officially drinkin' the DC&G kool-aid. First of all, this is a sandwich shop. It doesn't pretend to be fancy. They don't try and sell you a fru-fru version of a classic lunch staple. They just do the basics better than everybody else. The difference between Dave's and say a Subway is as subtle as it is epic. He uses fresh, healthy ingredients- right down to limiting the nitrates in the deli meat he selects. Fresh bread every day, creative sauces and daily specials. There is a nostalgia to food that is prepared this way. Every bite is like the best bite of the best sandwich that you idealize having at some point in days and years gone by. You can't quite figure out what makes it so good other than it is done RIGHT. Dave has a special for every day of the week and they usually sell out before midday. The other day a customer offered the person ahead of him who got the last pulled pork sandwich $10. for a $6. sandwich. The customer with the sandwich in hand politely declined. But, the food is just one reason to enjoy Dave's. The other reason is Dave himself. He is friendly and helpful and truly cares about making your lunch experience as good as it possibly can be. Even when the line is out the door, Dave has a way of engaging each of his customers in a friendly and meaningful way and, his personal touch makes his sandwiches taste that much better. This review is for the Wicked Clam food truck, not for Dave's Chillin'-N-Grillin' restaurant. Clam chowder was BURNT. It just smelled horrible, and I found a piece of clam that was literally blackened on the bottom. It was bland (save for the burnt taste), not worth the $7, and made my house stink. I physically could not continue eating after about 8 spoonfuls of the stuff. The lousy pieces of baguette that came with the chowder were stale. I've been to Boston and had real New England clam chowder, and this was the furthest thing from it. read more

I guess I s'pose I can understand how people rave about this place, but the less enthusiastic reviews make good points too. There's a huge "cognitive dissonance" between the outside of the place (which is pretty smooth and "clean"), and the inside, which sort of reminds me of someone's messy house. The food prep area does look kind of messy and there's a disorganized vibe to the place. That said, Dave the owner seems to be a cool guy, and the food is OK, but it's well worth it to drive a little further East on Colorado to the ER Italian Bakery & Deli for your sandwich fix. So I was trying to get a delicious Pastrami sandwich down the street at Oinkster, but the line was just ridiculous. I was starving, so I pulled out my handy iPhone, fired up the Yelp application to search for nearby 4-star restaurants, and found this place a couple blocks down. At first, I was skeptical, how can a simple Tuna Melt be THAT good? I went ahead and ordered it anyway, along with the Roast Beef melt my girlfriend got. The tuna melt was huge and had this red pepper sauce which was amazing. The roast beef was a little underwhelming after trying the tuna melt, but was still very flavorful and juicy. Dave was also very helpful in explaining to us what would go in the sandwiches, along with what other customers really enjoyed in their sandwiches. While he was explaining this to us, it kinda just went in one ear and out the other because I was starving. But thank you nonetheless for the help, Dave! Total came out to about $16 for 2 sandwiches. Pricey, I know. But you will not walk out of here hungry, and you might even be carrying half a sandwich out with you for leftovers because they are that big. Definitely a spot to try out. read more

Yes the sandwiches are delightful and delicious and all things fantastic. But what really makes the place is the ambiance. Twice, I've been here and twice we were treated to a dose of experimental environmental theatre. An on going story of two people who run a little sandwich shop and can't agree on how it should be done. Each episode usually escalates quickly to a screaming match until one of them gets to the catch phrase "I don't want to do this, but if we don't do this, then we're going to close!" I try to stop in whenever I'm on that side of the hill for a sandwich with a side of theatre. If there was some award for performance art I'm sure they'd receive it. read more

Whenever I move to a new place I always do my research and find the best sandwich shop in the area. In Seattle it was HoneyHole, in New York City I loved Abbondanza's, and here in NE Los Angeles it's Dave's Chillin'-N-Grillin.' The requirement of a good sandwich shop seems to be an owner with an obsessive and perhaps irrational love for something that will never make you a famous chef or get into a tourist book--even if it should. In the 2 years I have been coming to Dave's, I have not once been disappointed. Everything he does is top notch. My favorite is the pulled pork on Wednesday, but I really like everything I have tried. I love the spicy house-made "Peppa Spread" that is in squirt bottles at every table. I love the way Dave (who is always there BTW) will talk your ear off about the intricate details of his recommendation. I love that if you have a toddler he'll whip up a "child's plate" free of charge. I love the back of the seating area that feels like you're in someone's basement rec-room, complete with old couches, a cluttered coffee table, a TV, dartboard and piano. Everything about Dave's seem honest and authentic. One other nice option is the mutual agreement Dave's and their neighbor Swork Coffee have to let you bring in each other's stuff. Swork has a great little play area for toddler's, so between the two of them you can get a meal, a caffeine buzz and play in the same trip. This is a great rainy/too hot day option that I have done many times. Another tip: they'll do smaller (I think) $4 version of their sandwiches if you're feeling a little hungry (think 4th meal). I really do hope Dave's C&G thrives and lasts a long time here. If you like places that do things their own way, as opposed to the all-too-common cookie cutter, corporate places then you too will love Dave's. read more

Dave's Chillin-N-Grillin is a little taste of heaven. I think it's about my fifth time eating at Dave's and I thought it was finally time for a much deserved review. Normally I order the grilled hummus, cheese, and tomato sandwich on rosemary bread (so good!), but today my boyfriend and I decided to split the specials...turkey melt with avocado on rosemary bread for me and surf and turf tuna w/a thin slice of pastrami on sourdough for him. We switched halves and spent the entire time trying to decide which one tasted better. Fresh ingredients and the right combination of flavors...Dave knows how to make a mean sandwich! Dave may be more passionate about sandwiches than anyone I have ever met. Seriously. He seems to have a whole speech down about the quality of the ingredients, how everything on the menu is OK for pregnant women, etc - but because he is so excited and seems genuine, I don't mind that I've heard it a few times. The thing I REALLY love about Dave is that he makes sample size sandwiches to try while you are waiting. I have never ordered a meatball sandwich in my life, but after getting a sample of one, I crave them. Dave will tell you how the meatballs are imported from New Jersey, but all you really care about is the gooey yummyness with the spicy kick of the pepper sauce and melty mozzarella. The roast beef melt on sourdough is also delish. One last Dave anecdote - went in there with my parents and my fussy toddler. I was trying to figure out what to order for the baby and Dave just made her up a plate of turkey, cheese, bread, and veggies - no charge. Love love love Dave's. It's been a place for friends & me to chow down on delicious sandwiches & smoothies and just chill. I checked out this place a couple years ago when it had replaced my favorite smoothie place, so i was familiar with the store already. I was bummed that my old store was gone, but when I found that they made great smoothies AND even better sandwiches, I was taken. The owner Dave is as chill as it gets. Back in junior high I'd visit there often with my brother & friends to talk even if we didn't have any money to buy anything. He's always offering you a free glass of water or even leftovers of smoothies. It's great. As for the sandwiches, I haven't tried all of it but I love their tuna sandwiches which are seriously PACKED with flavor & filling. Mm, so so good. And the prices, they're reasonable. Not crazy pricey, depending on what you buy, but definitely worth the quality. I don't even mind the wait, which most of the time isn't that long. I'd swap a chance to go to Subways for Dave's any day. Seriously, would you rather pay six bucks for ingredients that have been sitting out there in plastic containers slapped into your sandwich or get a WAAAY better sandwich that someone REALLY took the time and cared about how they made it, in addition to good conversations and supporting your local stores. We just moved from NewYork 3 weeks ago and lived without a fridge so we went and eat at Dave's almost everyday. I'm pregnant so i can't just go around and eat crappy sandwiches but Dave is amazing. Came here with my GF who is a sandwich lover and aficionado and were taken care of none other than Dave himself. Now the menu is insane, creative sandwich all across the board, so it was kinda hard to choose just one. Best part Dave was so nice to make us 2 sandwiches in one, so we got the pilgrim and the surf and turf. OMG probably the best sandwich i have ever had so far, both of them so get either or they are both amazing. Service here was great, slow because it was only dave and well it doesn't matter because he puts love into each and every sandwich so the wait is worth it so calm down and relax. The atmosphere is a little off thats about the only bad thing i could say about this place, only a like 5 tables and crowded hallway where the bathroom is. Decent sandwich place in the area. The signature Davewich sounded great on paper - turkey and roast beef - but really lacked flavor. Turkey was too crumbly and dry, and roast beef was dry too. This is one of my favorite places to get a sandwich in all of Los Angeles. Dave treats every customer and every ingredient with care, and you can taste it in all of his food. Try everything and anything that he recommends! It's all amazing, top-quality and affordable, served with a grin. He always goes above and beyond, allowing you to "pay him back" if you don't have the cash (he says that he's almost always paid back), giving you the leftovers of too-large smoothies, or just being an overall swell guy. He also treats his regulars like part of the family. When I was at Oxy, my boyfriend and I would take in a Dave's sandwich and a movie every Friday afternoon to start the weekend off right. Even thought we're back infrequently now, he still knows our "usual" on sight. How's that for service? As far as recommendations go, I'm partial to the meatball sub (with homemade meatballs) or the grilled hummus and cheese. Dave's! Where to start. Best sandwiches this part of town, simply amazing. Dave is someone who truly loves food & ingredients and always strives to make you the best sandwich. Don't like a certain ingredient? He'll give you more of anything else. Getting the last bit of the tuna? He'll feel bad because it's "not just right" and give you a discount. The rest of the staff are also very friendly. While they try their best, don't expect assembly-line service like at Subway or Quizno's - most of the time it's one customer at a time. The only thing I haven't liked is the tuna melt, but I tried it because it was supposedly the best tuna melt in the city....I came to terms that I really just don't like tuna sandwiches, in any form. Dave is the man! I stumbled in here on a Friday evening because I had a hankering for a sandwich it was 8:07pm when we strolled in and realized they closed at 8pm. Dave was so accommodating and apologized for having the open sign still up and struck us a deal. He said he can't have his customers leave hungry so he asked if we had any dietary restrictions and went to town with two mystery sandwiches. Omg, best move ever! I don't know where to start... looks like they were going out of business or they don't care about cleanliness or stocking drinks. The place was very dirty, they had a dirty fan in the kitchen area pointing straight where they make the food. Off the menu, dirty stained menu, I ordered a french dip sandwich, the worst french dip sandwich i have ever eaten. There was some kind of mayo spread on it that once dipped in the au ju, it tasted like nail polish. It was disgusting. Ended up feeling sick once i got up to leave. I first met Dave, the proprietor of Dave's Chillin-N-Grillin, next door to his sandwich shop at Swörk, where I overheard the baristas inquiring about his morning vegetable hunt. He was enthusiastically touting the Reuben he would be making that day and the girls were swooning over the famed avocado he had apparently purchased. Curiosity moved me to interject, and all parties involved were shocked and concerned that I was a student at Oxy, yet had never set foot inside Dave's. To be honest, I had noticed the shop before and wasn't that intrigued. The tiny space and bright purple awning with loud yellow letters didn't immediately evoke thoughts of freshness, and I thought if I really wanted a greasy sandwich, I could go to my campus cafeteria. But with the coffee girls' culinary coercions and the proprietor's sunny demeanor, I knew what I had to do. I couldn't have been more wrong about the freshness--Dave wakes up with the birds every morning to shop for the freshest ingredients, meaning that the menu is subject to delicious changes every day. He was out of avocado the day I went but one could hardly notice with the excellence of the other ingredients. My grilled sandwich was served on fresh-baked wheat bread and was filled with thin shaved turkey, mustard, tomato and mayo, all heated up on the griddle right in front of you. Dave's turkey is special--he will only buy it with no water added and if he can't get the 0% turkey that day, turkey subs are off the menu. With the daily selection of sinfully aromatic roast beef, meatball, pastrami, salami, ham, and sometimes even crab, I don't know how any vegetarian's will-power could survive. However, if you are one of the strong ones, he offers a Greek Veggie Sub, served on sourdough smothered in oil and vinegar with pepperoncinis, tomato, olives, lettuce, and a substantial spreading of feta cheese. If you devour your sub as quickly as I did (two halves overflowing with turkey in about five minutes) you might need some help washing it down. Look no further than the selection of smoothies, sherbert chillers and ice cream milk shakes. We switched things up a bit on the Blueberry Banana Bash, made on my visit with mixed berries instead due to a lack of fresh blueberries that day. I know it sounds crazy, but this tasted clean, and that was what made it so delicious. Some smoothies can taste artificially sweetened but the incredible saccharine quality in this was pure and natural, never watered or juiced-down. It was gone in a time span similar to that of the sub. Dave, a Boston native, is friendly and open to talking about anything from his business to his hometown. His shop has old school arcade games and art from locals and legends like Salvador Dali. The sandwich-and-smoothie agenda may seem limited but the selections within each category are vast and ever-changing. The simplicity allows them to focus on making the best quality products a starving college student could ask for, and at six dollars for my sandwich and 4.50 for a big smoothie, the quality just about the price. So if you're waiting for motivation to come from Dave in the Swörk coffee line, stall no more. read more

Amazing! My Son and I decided to try this place out today. Hit the spot dead ON! My killer sandwich had pastrami, Meatballs and sausage. Wow! I couldn't even finish half of it and that was a medium size. My Son got the meat ball sandwich and inhaled it. Very generous portions with the great price. What makes this a five star is not only is the food awesome but the Staff is customer service at its best! Very down to earth. Dave and crew rock! If you read any of my other reviews I don't review the "OK" just the very bad and the very very good, This is a very very good place to simply Laugh, Eat and enjoy ! Everything here is really good. If tuna didn't have mercury in it, I would probably eat the tuna melt every day. I've also had the rosemary's turkey, ham & cheese, and the French dip--all great. I especially admire the construction of the sandwiches; they really hold up even when I get it delivered. Very consistent. Make sure you get Dave's hotts (the pepper sauce). Dave rocks. The people that work here rock. Judging this place in the league of sandwich shops: Pasadena Sandwich Co, Sandwich Story, The Hat (?) and etc..., Daves Chillin'-N-Grillin' is definitely amongst one of the best. First of all, their service is just so great. There's just something about good, nice and friendly people serving your food that makes your food taste that much better. I think I just trust the food I'm eating more when cool people are making it. Now for the food: 1) Meatball Hot Sub: Goooood. Their meatballs definitely tasted fresher than the likes of Togo's, Subway etc. However, I think it would be a disgrace to compare Dave's with the aforementioned. Their meatballs are flavorful and tender. They also have a horse radish sauce that's really good too. 2) French Dip: I wish I could say its the best I've had, but its not. It is however, better than Philippe's (the place that invented the French Dip in Downtown LA). It's also better than many of the French Dips I've had but Houston's French Dip is still #1 on my books. 3) Roast beef melt: Have you ever had any melt that wasn't good? This melt was good and just a notch better. I swear its that horseradish sauce they put in it. Also, I do get a sense that their ingredients are just fresher. I like this place and will definitely be back. Oh one more thing: THEY EXPANDED! So now you don't have to eat on the side walk any more! read more
