When I ordered my food I didn't know what to expect but let me tell you when I took my first bite I was in heaven. The proportions of meat to lettuce to cheese and sauce are amazing and the bread was exquisite. The owner Dave was really easy to talk to as we babbled about the paintings he sells for local artists (which are super cool if you are into that style of art). I was there with a couple friends, one of them that had recently ate and he was just along for the ride when Dave came to the table with a free (yet also amazing and filling) sandwich and told him "Eating good food isn't a spectator sport. I gave Dave's a 5/5 only because I couldn't give them anything more than 5. Dave's does everything a regular restaurant should do and then some. I went to Occidental College, and used to come here daily. I've been coming here for 10 years, was one of Dave's first customers when he first opened up. My company recently relocated to Glassell Park, so I have been coming here more often for lunch. Still amazing. Dave uses the freshest most delicious ingredients. All his sandwiches are carefully crafted. It is hard to actually pick which are the best, because all of them are top notch. He doesn't skimp you either, they are good sized. I have been getting the Turkules recently, a delicious combo of turkey, feta, and hummus with pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce. He adds some of his, "hotz," spread, which adds a nice kick. The feta really stands out too, creamy complement to the turkey. Love the bread, it is solid with a slight crunchy exterior, but soft interior. Perfect for his sandwiches. Also a big fan of the tuna melt. Honestly, you can't go wrong. He has daily specials as well. Pretty good smoothies too. It's one of my favorite sandwich shops in LA. Dave and his staff are cool peeps, and it is a very relaxed locally owned independent sandwich shop. Located on a hip corner of Eagle Rock. This review is not about the food. It's about how I was treated when I tried to use a Groupon on a Saturday. When ordering at the counter, a man that I can only assume was Dave, launched into a self-serving monologue about how the Groupon is not good on Saturdays, even though it doesn't list that on the Groupon. He proceeded to explain that he told Groupon that he wasn't going to allow Groupon's on his "one good day" a week but apparently Groupon screwed up and didn't write it on the Groupon. The Groupon is also not valid during Happy Hour (which is actually listed on the Groupon). Then he told me that I should buy his food anyway since I was already in the store and that his sandwiches are really good and since I wasted the gas already, I might as well stay and eat. Hah! I wasn't going to stay at a place that is CLEARLY out to steal customer's money. What a scam artist. He said that I'll just have to come back during the week to redeem the Groupon. I will never go back to Dave's again. I will never patronize his establishment. It's unfortunate because I wanted to love that place since it's in my neighborhood. But I will not support an ego-maniac who is swindling people by luring them into his business with a Groupon and then not honoring it. Such a total dirt-bag thing to do. I went to Oinkster instead and happy ate lunch there! And Groupon also gave me a credit. Kudos to Groupon for being a stand-up company, unlike Dave's. And Dave you should revise your signage in your window to explain that when the food is gone, you close your doors and do not abide by your own Hours of Operation. Dave, I've been coming to Chillin'-N'-Grillin' for a couple years now. I live in West LA, and have taken a couple of daytrips to Eagle Rock for the sole purpose of your sandwiches. Forgive me for expecting a shred of empathy for a repeat customer. Your sandwiches kick ass, but you need to get over yourself. I know we made the heinous mistake of coming to your hallowed establishment with a Groupon on a Saturday. The Groupon didn't say anything about Saturdays being invalid, in which case, you should have simply given us the discount we paid for which would have been like $15, especially after we said we drove like 20 miles to your restaurant. But no, you fed us some self-righteous line about how Saturday is your "one good day a week". Well, guess what? Saturday happens to be the "one good day" I'm physically able to schlep my ass to shitkicker Eagle Rock! Dave, I don't appreciate you scoffing at our Groupon simply because Saturday is the one day we can get to Eagle Rock in less than 1.5 hours, and could make it there on our one day off. If you're running out of food and are unable to serve your customers before your posted operating hours arrive, then you clearly don't need to get into bed with Groupon. Groupon is for desperate merchants willing to take pennies on the dollar for their product or service just to generate traffic, or get the phone ringing. I had been coming to DCNG since before your ill-advised partnership with Groupon, but this experience left a really bad taste in my mouth. This place stinks! The sandwiches were actually pretty good, but the rest of the experience was TERRIBLE. It started with the guy taking our order at the counter. Asking him questions about the menu was like pulling teeth. TON of attitude.....and acted as if he was doing us a favor by taking our order. I asked if the Meatball sandwich was a Meatball Parm....he looked at me as if I were from another planet. He told me it wasn't.....it had meatballs, peppers and cheese. The owner is supposedly from the east coast, and they don't know what a 'parm' sandwich is?? After we ordered, my buddy handed him a Groupon coupon and he said they don't accept them on Saturdays. The Groupon had NO exclusions on it! The counter guy checked with the owner, who rudely popped his head out of the back and stated "no Groupons on Saturdays....no exceptions!". Nice personal touch by the owner. Oh.....and they don't accept debit/credit cards. Cash only. But 'for your convenience' they luckily have an ATM machine in the dining area. I walked into DCAG for the first time wanting to love it. Being that i love to eat sandwiches. Unfortunately he doesn't care for Groupon users. I walked in and there was only one other costumer there who seemed to be a regular by the way they were chatting it up. I order my meal and proceed to pull out my groupon when it comes time to pay. I then hear a sigh from Dave, he then starts to talk to that costumer about how these groupon users are killing his business. I am standing there the whole time as he starts to talk crap on us grouponies with his East Coast touch. I almost felt terrible for buying the groupon. This place is aiight. I went because of all of the rave reviews. Well, if you're not a regular, it's not too amazing, bc no one helps you understand wtf is going on at all. The first time I went to Dave's was on a Saturday night around 7:30p. He was closed because he had sold out. He didn't have any more bread left. He's been upping his bread orders, but apparently y'all are insatiable. Anyway, he felt really bad to have to turn me away and even worse when he told me that he would be closed the next day. Apparently he was taking his staff to the Dodger game. How great is that!? No worries. Stopped by the following Friday and it was so totally worth the wait. I had the 10" meatball and sausage hero daily special. This thing was put together beautiful. A full row of sausage, a full row of meatballs, provolone, homemade gravy (aka sauce), and red pepper spread. As Dave is fond of saying, "Nice!" I paired the sub with an everything smoothie. Oh, and here's the ingredient list for the smoothie... fruit. As I'm going to work on my sausage and meatball sub, Dave is telling me about his pulled pork special on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. He slow cooks it for four hours and hand pulls it. Then he de-fats the juices and adds bourbon to make the barbecue sauce. Needless to say, I went there for lunch the following Tuesday. Man that pulled pork was so good, it'll make ya slap your mama. Had the peach mango smoothie to top it off. This past Friday, Dave hooked me up with a 10" French Dip and a Brown Cow (half chocolate, half vanilla shake). The horse radish spread totally makes this sandwich. Dave really cares about his sandwiches and his customers. Definitely five-star worthy. I don't think he could make a bad sandwich if he tried. He simply isn't wired that way. A word to the wise. Where do you go when you want to be chillin like a villain? Well, I don't know if many bad guys actually come here, but if they want to take over a delicious eating joint, this would be it. Dave's Chillin'-n-grillin' is one of those spots that you can't really find everywhere and even though their menu looks pretty average, the food that comes out to you is anything but! Wednesdays have to be my favorite day because of the homemade bourbon bbq pulled pork. That thing will totally massage your taste buds like no other. In fact, I'm not even sure how the other sandwiches taste because I fear that I will get something not as amazing as the pulled pork sandwich and the magic would go away. And what does one wet their lips with during this amazing pulled pork sandwich? Their smoothies, of course. The Blueberries Banana smoothie is something that I just crave every month. Yes, I have a cycle to go get myself a smoothie. You don't want to see me when I'm BBS'ing. Dave's Chillin'-N-Grillin' is kind of a weird place. You are either swept up in its kinda neighborhood charm or you feel kind of alienated by it, which kind of explains a lot of the diverging reviews. The more you get to know the people who work there, especially Dave, the more you kind of get out of the place. I kind of equate it as the In and Out syndrome... you can enjoy the menu as it is, but the deeper you dig the more you find special combinations and treats that are slightly off the menu. SANDWICHES I've been going to Dave's for the better part of a year now and have tried a good portion of the menu. Special note, always ask if there are any specials or off menu items. Dave likes to toy around with different sandwiches and he'll often have an off menu item or variation. French Dip - 5 out of 5 - I've had a lot of french dips at a lot of the famous places across LA and Dave's is my favorite. The meat is juicy, tender and flavorful and the bun is soaked in jus. Dave proudly says that you don't need a side to dip your sandwich in and I whole heartedly agree. The Pilgrim (Thursday's only) - 5 out of 5 - This might be one of my favorite sandwiches of all time. It is sliced turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce topped with gravy. The sandwich is flavorful and hearty and full of awesome. Tuna Melt - 4 out of 5 - We've all had a tuna sandwhich in our lives and dare I say... 99.9% have tasted tinny and bad. This was the first one I've had that I felt was worth the money. First off the sandwich isn't dripping in mayonnaise which is nice. It is all about the tuna. OFF MENU TIP - you can order the Surf and Turf which is the tuna sandwich with Pastrami which is my preference. The pastrami adds a nice salty beefiness to the sandwich. Pastrami - 3 out of 5 - This was just ok. I was expecting a little bit more. It's solid but if you really want a good pastrami, go down the block to the Oinkster Pulled Pork (Wednesday's only) - 4 out of 5 - Great pulled pork with a light bbq sause over a cabbage slaw. I like this one much much better than the Oinkster's pulled pork. This one always runs out fast. Cubano (Wednesday's only) - 4 out of 5 - Made wit the same pulled pork as above but pressed cuban style. Very good and I actually like it more than the one at Porto's (feel free to raise your pitchforks). Sausage and Meatball (Thursday - Saturday) - 4 out of 5 - You can get a meatball sandwich there any day of the week but the sausage variation is only available Thursday until it runs out. Dave orders them from Chicago and sometimes it doesn't come until the end of the day. The meatballs are so flavorful and tender and the sausage adds a nice subtle spice. The sandwich is covered in marinara and cheese. Yum. Turkey Melt Special (frequent off menu variation) - 4 out of 5 - Turkey cheese and avocado on a rosemary bread (i think). It's cheesy and yummy. Cheese Bomb (Friday Afternoon's Only) - 2 out of 5 - This is the only real disappointment I've had here. Maybe my hopes and expectations were too high, but I thought the cheese bomb just...well bombed. It is basically a philly cheesestake but there isn't really anything special about it. It was kinda bland. Not really authentic (where's the wiz?). Philly's Best off Broadway is a much better option SMOOTHIES AND SHAKES The smoothies might have been the biggest revelation here. They were bold and flavorfully and pretty much put every other smoothy I've had to shame. I almost immediately stopped going to Jamba juice because of them. There is no point to really review them individually as they are all awesome. Special love for Peach Mango, Strawberry Banana and Everything Nice (which has a little bit of everything) Shakes were very good... not the best I've had but still very very good. The Screaming Monkey (half chocolate, half vanilla with a banna) is my fav but most of the time I choose a smoothie. SERVICE To be blunt...service kinda sucks. The wait times can be a little long and it has happend a few times where a smoothie order gets lost in the shuffle or doesn't come until you are almost done with lunch. The people behind the counter are usually rushing around and aren't always the most attentive. You get a lot more love if you are a regular... but that can really alienate a newbie. Dave's Chilin' n Grillin" is absolutely a wonderful addition to Eagle Rock. They don't serve bread with chemicals or preservatives, they don't use processed meat or cheese, and they buy their produce locally, who else does that honestly? The service was good and quick and the sandwiches and smoothies were pleasant. Their only downfall would be their prices but you get what you pay for, right? Food I tried the Rosemary's Turkey ($8.25) which is apart of their Specialty Sandwiches. It came with grilled turkey breast, mozzarella and monterrey jack cheese, avocado, tomato, spicy mustard and mayo on top of rosemary bread. The sandwich had a ton of meat, they certainly don't skimp you there. There was just the right amount of cheese; a lot but nothing overpowering. The avocado was present which I like to see since most places hold back on the goods. The rosemary bread was nice but probably not my favorite; I think if they chopped the rosemary more finely I would've enjoyed it more. I also tried there Everything Nice Smoothie ($4.75) which came with everything they had- strawberry, banana, blueberry, berry, peach, and mango. In my opinion, I'd pass on the smoothie. I didn't think the smoothie distinguished itself from anything else I've had especially when considering the price. The only way I'd get another smoothie here is if they offered a deal or special. Overall I can't wait to try more things on their menu. Tip They have an entertainment center! Pretty awesome, almost like having a lunch at home :) Ask them to split the smoothie; from my experience and others, they tend to give you more that way. read more

Sorry, I know there's probably gonna be a bunch of Dave's enthusiasts eyeing my 2 star rating with great disdain, but I gotta tell it like it is... I've only been here one time, and based on that experience I most likely won't be coming back. I ordered the roast beef melt, and the guy that took my order said it would take about 12 - 15 minutes. I was fine with that. Then I go to pay for my $7 sandwich with a twenty, and he asks if I have anything smaller in kind of an irritated tone. Now mind you, this is a cash only place, and they're asking me if I have anything smaller than a $20 for a $7 sandwich... Ridiculous!! If you're a cash only business, make sure you got enough change to last you throughout the day... Your inability to make change is not my problem!! So I take a seat and pull out my iPhone and check in on Yelp. And then I shoot off a couple texts and look at some news stories. Ok, 15 mins is up and my sandwich is nowhere to be seen. Screw with my phone some more, now it's 30 mins and my sandwich still isn't ready. Starting to get a bit irritated. 40 mins has gone by, still no sandwich, so I go up to the counter to make sure they haven't lost my order. Dave assures me that it'll be ready in like 2 mins. A full 50 minutes after I placed the order I get my sandwich... The sandwich was pretty good. It was piled high with plenty of tasty roast beef, melty cheese, and nicely golden toasted without being too greasy. That's the thing though, the sandwich was just pretty good... I'm not waiting f**cking 50 minutes for an ok sandwich. All they do is make sandwiches all day, so the dude that took my order should've had a better idea of how long it was gonna take to make it. First, I want to say that Dave is golden. He is the real deal. Truly a good guy. Second, I want to say that the sandwiches here are really good. I am from San Diego where really amazing sandwich shops are almost as abundant as amazing taco stands. In any case, the sandwiches here are REALLY good. The bread and all the ingredients were fresh. I had a turkey on a baguette and my GF had the salami on a baguette. ALSO, during the holidays, Dave is doing a Thursday Turkey dinner sandwich thing. I am not sure exactly what the deal is but the way he described it is going to get me back in there Thursday after work for sure! This place is exactly what I want in a sandwich shop. The fact that Dave is a really cool guy is an added bonus. Eagle Rock restaurants are hit and miss. Dave's comes through every time. I don't think this place is the best sandwich shop in the world like some of the reviews BUT living in the area, I know where I can the best sandwich in town every time. This is the first place I'm going to rate a place as a bomb based on service and wait time alone. I don't want to get into details, but the last 3 times I've been there I've waited 45 minutes, 50 minutes and 45 minutes (plus told it will take another 15). The last time I was there I walked out after being given 2 excuses and then blamed for not realizing it will take an hour. Apparently when you're told "we'll start in a few minutes" I'm supposed to understand that means they will START COOKING THE ROAST IN A FEW MINUTES. Meaning, the sandwich will take an hour. Then basically blamed for not realizing that's what is meant by "we're starting your sandwich in a few minutes" The sandwiches are good but Dave seems to think it's perfectly normal to wait almost an hour for a freakin' sandwich during lunchtime. Dave, you are forgiven. I forgive you for choosing a horribly corny name for your restaurant. I forgive you for your awful Boston accent. I I even forgive you for liking the odious Red Sox. You are forgiven all these aesthetic (and possibly even ethical) lapses because your sandwich shop? Is effing spectacular. The vibe is classic Eagle Rock--DIY, stripped-down, hole-in-the-wall-y, a little bit hipster. Joints with this atmosphere are always either abysmal or unfathomably awesome. Dave's is the latter, and it's all because of the food. The menu spans various intriguing possibilities, but mainly offers sandwiches, none of which will surprise in their conception. But in their execution they are divine. The secret, I think, is that the ingredients are fresh, all-natural, and top-shelf. I had a tuna melt, which is something you can get at Denny's, but in this case it was a gooey, cheesy, slightly tart delight. I was tempted to ask a stranger to order another one so I could have seconds without outing myself as a total pig. Why there are lines out the door for Oinkster's nausea-inducing rotgut fare, while Dave's is relatively less in demand puzzles me completely (I suspect it may be that Oinkster has a cutesy name, while Dave's name kinda sucks). But it suits me just fine, because it means that when lemmings are waiting 25min for the mediocre and possibly diarrhea-causing fare at le Oink, I'll be across the street, happily ensconced at Dave's, having one of their pitch-perfect sandwiches and pondering the cosmically puzzling idea that even a Red Sox fan can make food so delicious. read more

I've been to Dave's a few times, and have to say - if you have a hankering for a sandwich and a smoothie, which happens to me more often than most, this place will become your jam. From their Rosemary's Turkey sandwich and fresh fruit smoothies, to Voodoo chips which (a) I've never seen anywhere else and (b) are sprinkled with magic, and video games and plentiful plush seating while you wait. I'm surprised Dave's has not received any health code violations. The place is kind of a dump. The eating area is nice enough, but behind the counter where you food is actually being made... gross. There were four people working there when I went in on a Saturday for lunch, and first off, it took about 35 minutes to get my to-go sandwich. Sure, it was good, but next time I'll go to Subway and be out in 6 minutes! But I digress. The counter area was littered with various sandwich detritus that looked as if it had been sitting there for days. The floor way filthy as well, and the people kept wiping stuff onto the floor so it was also littered with papers, lettuce, spilled sauces and all sorts of gross stuff. The people kept answering a greasy cell phone with their bare hands to take call-in orders, then returning right to digging their hands into the meat and cheese to put on the next sandwich. Really gross. When I finally got mine (now that I was thoroughly disgusted) it was wrapped so poorly that half of it nearly fell out when I picked it up. If someone were to have served me that same sandwich layed out on a fresh paper plate, I would have scarfed and loved it. But having seen what it went through to get to me took the joy out of the whole experience. read more

Wow, I can only echo the sentiments from below...this place is awesome!! I went with a friend for the first time for lunch today. We knew we were in for a treat, when on our way in, some guy popped his head in and shouted, "Hi Dave" and walked on. Dave, as in Dave's Chillin'-N-Grillin' mans the (sandwich) deck. Everyone in there seemed to know him and he immediately made us feel like part of the family. He told us about how he uses fresh ingredients with no added chemicals. It's obvious that he takes a great deal of pride in his work and loves what he does. The food was incredible...I ordered the veggie sub with hummus and feta and my friend got the turkey melt....the turkey portion (freshly sliced) was thicker than both pieces of bread combined...yum!! My sandwich was heavenly, everything fresh and delicious. Someone ordered a smoothie and we saw whole fresh pieces of fruit going in to the blender. The shop is cute, cozy with great art on the walls. We will definitely be back to Dave's often!! read more

Yelp says close at 6, they said close at 4. Either way, it's 3:55. And they weren't even nice about it. (on a Sunday) pretty annoying.

A friend of mine brought me here about a year ago. It was the day after a long night with friends and I was killing off a hangover that just wouldn't give me a break. He recommended I order something here because it would cure all, so I did. Having guzzled down 3/4 of pulled pork sandwich and a shake, I was actually wondering to myself if I had died and gone on to heaven. Either that or Jesus was workin' miracles that day because my hangover was cured!! Ever since then, I've been a regular here or at least try to be - since I work Downtown. The owner(who wouldn't you guess it), Dave, is a really laid back guy. If you catch him after the lunch rush or at a not so busy time, he'll go into full discussion about the ingredients he uses in his sandwiches. I remember one time he mentioned getting his tuna(for his tuna melt) from some guy in San Francisco who got his fish from Japan and it was just all types of crazy. I recall eating the sandwich and thinking "damn, i love you japan!" because it was THAT good. So a sandwich is about $7-8 and shakes are about $5-6, but it's all quality and it totally blows Quiznos, Subway, and all those other fast food sandwich places out of the water. If they had bigger signs, this would place get a lot more attention. Luckily, the popularity of this place relies solely on word of mouth. Now how awesome is that? read more

This place is awesome. Very causal ambiance--a few tables, a couch with a TV towards the back. The service here is great--very friendly. I had the best roast beef melt ever! I will be dragging my friends back here for sure. I also had the Everything Nice smoothie and it's really good. Looking forward to coming back to try their other sandwiches. I find parking easily outside on the street at a metered spot. I think neighborhood parking is also an option. read more

It's Thursday duh! So I had to try the special pilgrim sandwich. I love thanksgiving and all the food that comes along with the holiday so when I heard about a sandwich that I could have once a week that has thanksgiving between two slices of bread I said heck yeah buddy! Unfortunately I think I hyped myself up on this sandwich :( I'm not saying it's bad at all. Turkey, gravy, stuffing, and cranberry. All very yummy but I felt like the sandwich was lacking a bit of something maybe like mayo or even a spice. Noooo, I think just mayo. If they had put just a tad, I think it would have been the best sandwich ever. I give this place a 4/5 cuz I've had their other stuff before like 7 years ago and it was good but the pilgrim sandwich I'd have to give it a 3/5 for lacking a little bit of flavor. If they can make it just slightly more delicious I will totally change my rating. read more

Don't let the name scare you. This place is great! Tuna melt. Very delicious and unique-tasting. Not dripping with mayo. My first time here today. The guy was so excited about buying the most pristine piece of albacore tuna, i just had to try it. Out it came with the thickest layer of tuna salad i've ever had in a melt, perfectly stacked and crafted. I'm so full right now i can't even think straight. i just love it when you can tell there's so much love put into the food. it was the kindof sandwich that didn't depend on grease for its flavor. Everything ingredient knew its purpose and served it well. The amazing thing was you could actually taste the tuna, and not only smell it. I also had a apricot-mango "Chiller" and was pleasantly surprised. It's fat-free sorbet + soda water. Had a great meatball sub. The meatballs were a beef-pork blend flown in from the Tristate area (Jersey, if I remember correctly), the provolone was subtle but flavorful, and the veggies all fresh and delicious (and organic, when possible, I think the owner, Dave, said). Also, the roll was flaky on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Good stuff. Also, the atmosphere inside the place is wonderfully relaxed, beginning the friendly and welcoming customer service. I also like the fact that the dining area includes a couch on which you can choose to flop down and devour your sandwich. I only wish that the place were open on Sundays.... Also, the sandwiches end up being closer to $10 than $5, which can play a part in deciding where to grab a sandwich, depending upon one's budget. read more

Dave greeted us as we were standing there, and he let us know that they were using all kinds of fresh ingredients (rather than the customary stuff that was more unhealthy). It was cool hearing that from Dave himself. I went for their special of the day, a sausage and meatball sandwich. Many of the sandwiches are served as subs that are either 6" or 10". The 10" was a decent amount of food. It's sandwich only (no chips or meals). I also went for a smoothie, which are pretty good. They told me that they got an award for second best smoothies in town. I kind of wondered who got first. :) The place itself was extremely casual. And it was also pretty small. When I was there, I saw 2 2-chair tables, 1 4-chair table, and a 2-chair table outside. Pretty cozy if you ask me because things got pretty busy at times while we were there (lunchtime on a Saturday). I also enjoyed that it was extremely chill there. They just gave us the stuff and then when we left we went up to the counter ourselves to pay. That's trust. And I like that. That's what you get with a small place like that I guess. In the end, it was about $11 for a sandwich and smoothie. And although it does seem pretty fresh, I must admit that I might not have guessed it if I didn't read it in reviews on yelp and hear it from Dave himself. So I guess it is up to the customer to decide whether it is worth it or not. All told, pretty tasty, worth a try. I'd go back again, but it's not going to become my favorite restaurant of all time. read more

Let me start off by saying that I'm not one to go out of my way to write a review about a restaurant. I've written a few, but I only seem to do so if the place is really great, or if the place really sucks. Well... This place rocks! I recently went to Dave's based on the reviews I read on Yelp, and I must say, they're absolutely right. So let me get straight to the point. I went here with a couple of my kids (kids that don't seem to like much of anything unless the words "Happy Meal" are part of the order), and even they loved this place. I got the pastrami and my kids got turkey sandwiches, and everything was perfect. Now, this place is more expensive than most, but there is no doubt that you get what you pay for at Dave's. Two words: Quality Ingredients. Our order was taken by a young blonde kid who could use a little training on how to have a personality (which was honestly kind of a turn off at first), but then Dave came out from the back of the restaurant, and all was well. Dave has a great personality with a Boston sounding accent, and he really makes you feel welcome. Oh yeah, another thing that was impressive about Dave is that he remembers your name, whether it's your first time there (like me), or your 100th. Dave also talked to us about the quality ingredients that he uses and buys locally, and once we got our food, it was clear that he was right on target. As a bonus, Dave brought to our table some complimentary samplings of his smoothies and sherbert chillers, and they were so good, I (as well as my hard to please kids, mainly due to their age), wished we hadn't ordered Cokes with our meals, but instead, ordered his smoothies. One word of warning though: Dave's Chillin'-N-Grillin' does NOT accept debit or credit cards. CASH ONLY. I was lucky enough that I had enough cash in my wallet to pay for my order (which is not usually the case). In fact, while we were eating there, 6 customers came in to order food, and 5 of the 6 didn't have enough cash to pay for their orders, so Dave told them to go across the street to a gas station that has an ATM machine. This is the one thing that blows. Well, that pretty much wraps it up. I will definitely go back because this place is awesome! read more

Sandwiches are always great WHEN THEY HAVE THE MEAT. Been a few times where they run out of turkey. How does a sandwich spot run out of turkey? Be prepared to wait a long time if you don't call in ahead. Place was empty, took 45 min for two turkey sandwiches Call ahead. read more

Totally amazing. As a passionate sandwich lover I will say that 90% of a sandwich's enjoyability relies on it's bread. Dave has found the most perfect bread for hogies of all time- chewy on the outside, a teeny bit sourdoughy, and soft on the inside yet still rough enough to hold up to extra mustard and lots of veggies, meats, and cheeses. I was $2 short once, because I had forgotten that they only accept cash, and the girl at the counter told me with a genuine smile that I could just take care of it next time. I love them. read more

For my very first visit yesterday, I ordered Dave's most popular sandwich- the rosemary turkey. I ordered over phone. All Dave said was "10 minutes." I showed up 12 minutes later. I still had another 7 minutes to wait since he was still cooking and talking to the ONE customer inside. One shaggy-looking buddy of his was sitting in the back corner, staring at me awkwardly. Dave was telling how much money he makes or loses depending on if his bread goes bad. Not appetizing conversation. The sandwich was pretty good, but only had: -cold cuts -tomato -avocado -chipotle mayo I only ate half. Threw the rest away. Chipotle mayo was good. Something about getting my food from this guy's "living room" setting makes it taste weird. Sorry just not for me. read more

There's only one scene I can remember from Atom Egoyan's film FELICIA'S JOURNEY: in the scene, Bob Hoskins' creepy character, who works for some kind of food company, is explaining to a salesperson from an automated catering company why fully automated food dispensers will never replace human food service: "Food must be served by caring hands, not machines," he says. It's one of his character's only touching moments. This is what Dave's Chillin' & Grillin' is all about. If Dave's had a tap, it would be the local bar. People would hang around all day, watching basketball on TV, sharing their troubles with Dave, whiling away the hours. Unfortunately, you can't really nurse a sandwich for hours, and most people don't finish a turkey sub and say "Another round." Still, Dave's succeeds in some ways in becoming Eagle Rock's one true hang-out joint. Less college and mommy-circuit than Swork next door, a little more informal and welcoming than The Coffee Table a block or so away, it's a place you would want to spend the day at, if you could. Dave's is decorated like a common room in a shared off-campus apartment, with random bookshelves, out-of-place office swivel chairs, old overstuffed easy chairs, a random high chair, a bongo drum, a battered upright piano, ancient video games, assorted knickknacks, random potted cacti, etc. The work of local artists adorn the walls. Some wooden baby toys are a recent addition. You get the sense Dave wants everyone to settle in and hang out. There's something stridently Luddite about Dave's. There are two old TV's (projection, color) that are usually fuzzily tuned to whatever channels they can pick up with their jerry-rigged antennae. There are cassette tapes, a boom box, and VHS tapes lying around: presumably, Dave puts on REPO MAN or BULL DURHAM when there's nothing better on to watch. I haven't talked about the food yet. The sandwiches at Dave's are locally famous, for the great care with which Dave makes them. And Dave Evans -- the Dave -- will more often than not be the one making your sandwich. He's usually there at all hours of the day. My favorite is the veggie-hummus. I don't (usually) eat beef, but am advised that the meatball sub is out of control. The ingredients are unfailingly fresh. The bread is chewy, fresh, perfect. I can't think of a better place in L.A. to get a sandwich. Amazingly enough, the food is almost secondary here: the most important factor is Dave himself, and the other people he's got working with him. Dave seems to genuinely care about the food, and to really want his customers to be happy. After you order, he'll often say, in his thick Boston accent "We'll take care of ya. I'll make you a great sandwich." And he will. I often suspect that he gives me the 10" sub when I order a 6" because, why not? I've often been there alone; as he brings my sandwich out to my table, where I'm sitting and reading alone, Dave will often say something nice like "Bon Appetit" or something, to make the experience of eating alone a little more pleasant. And when you're done, Dave will almost always ask "How'd that treat ya?" And you will invariably tell him that it was fantastic. Perhaps this is the point of Dave's defiantly Luddite motif: no matter how amazing the future gets, technology will never replace the joy of eating at a place like Dave's, where you're made to feel a little less alone, and where a sandwich can be a reminder that the world can be a very good place. read more
