You can get multiple choices of entrees, noodles, various types of dumplings and rolls, lots of good appetizers and delicious hot green tea. I enjoyed my two lunches at David's, especially the summer rolls and hot and sour soup. The Pad Thai is nothing special. It's a great spot to bring friends and or family and enjoy food and conversation in an old brick Raleigh building. read more

Asian style noodles and dumplings restaurant on Hillsborough St., just east of NC State's bell tower. It's quite spacious inside. Not super busy on a weeknight, but not empty either. Got their signature half-fried dumplings, and then the pork and wonton noodle soup. They tasted decent. It was the best wonton noodle soup I've had in the Triangle, although that's probably not say much since it's not easy to find around here other than in Chinese buffets (which are not very good). More expensive and not as good as what I can get in my hometown of Vancouver BC, but for the Triangle it's decent enough. At least the soup and the noodles had the authentic texture and flavor. I love dumplings and had heard good things about this place but I was sadly underwhelmed. A friend and I decided to get take-out one day and I was pretty pumped for some great dumplings. It turns out that they only have three kinds on their menu. This is pretty disappointing for a place with "dumpling" in the name. We ended up choosing the original half-fried dumplings. In terms of texture, they were pretty good, but the flavor was lacking. It was hard to pinpoint, but we both felt like they were just alright. For my entree, I wanted the hunan beef sauce but with chicken, and the person on the phone told me that's fine, they can substitute. It says this on the menu too, so it's a standard practice. When I opened my entree box, I found that it was beef. I wasn't going to drive back at that point so I ate it, but I was annoyed that it wasn't chicken after the person on the phone and I had talked specifically about the meat choices. Even still, the sauce was pretty good. It didn't amaze me but it was still fine. My friend felt the same way about the kung pao chicken that they ordered -- it was alright. Overall, this place was disappointing. I really wanted to like it but what can you do. It's not that cheap and the food wasn't exceptional, so I I won't be rushing back. read more

Made a reservation ahead of time for a large group. While it was lunch time and decently busy, it was not a situation that seemed that things were OVERLY busy at that point. Our waitress was off in her own world and seemed to have problems remembering who got what. When the time came to pay the bill, it took over 30 minutes for her to bring our checks/take our cards/run our checks. At that point, we were basically the only people in the restaurant. Other groups of similar size had come and gone. It took us over 2 hours from start to finish. And then checks were incorrect when she brought the copies for us to sign (though they had been correct when we gave our cards). After we left, I checked my account and I had been charged for 2 meals. I immediately called the restaurant and was placed on hold for a bit while a manager. I do not know what the manager's name was (because he refused to give it to me, though I asked several times)--but how he is a "manager" is beyond me. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. He was completely unprofessional. While we were discussing the fact that I was charged twice, I mentioned that since he was the manager I wanted to let him know that the service today was horrible and our group did not enjoy the dining experience. Any reasonable manager would have at least apologized out of just decency. He just talked over me and asked for my credit card information (which I had already given him). When I pointed out to him that it was his job as a manager to listen to customer complaints and at least attempt to placate the situation (even if he doesn't mean it), he did not care and did not want to hear my comments. He said things like "what do you want me to do about it now?" and "do you want your money refunded or not?" This "manager" continued to talk over me, I could tell he was laughing at me as I expressed my displeasure at the situation, and after the third time I asked for his name, he hung up on me. I will admit that as the conversation went on, I did become more and more angry with him, but I did not start out that way. Regardless, I cannot imagine hanging up on a customer and refusing to give your name. He did refund my money, but that is all I can say. This might be one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. Had this manager just said "oh, I'm so sorry for your service today ma'am, please let me refund your money"...that's all it would have taken. It's a shame because our office used to enjoy that restaurant, but we will NOT be returning there after horrible service, incorrect billing, and a manager who laughs at customers and hangs up on them. That is completely unacceptable. I would call back and ask to speak to the owner, but I'm pretty sure they'd hang up on me again. Perhaps I will call a different day. I am still trying to find a way to contact the owner directly without calling the restaurant again. Unacceptable. read more

Since moving to Raleigh, I have been on a quest for authentic Asian food. David's Dumpling & Noodle Bar is one of those places you put on your list because you miss real good Asian food and know that somewhere out there is a hole in the wall that is just waiting to be discovered even though you have tried every Asian restaurant in the Triangle and have been sorely disappointed each time. And this time is no different. The half-fried pork dumplings are supposed to be the highlight of this restaurant but it is only mediocre and not memorable. The filling tastes okay but none of the flavors really stand out. Is this supposed to be a soy sauce dumpling, a chili garlic dumpling, or a juicy pork dumpling? As someone who makes homemade dumpling skin that is pan-fried till crispy, I can tell you that the thinner skinned pork dumplings David's offers is nothing like what a good Chinese pan-fried dumpling should taste like. If you want thin-skinned dumplings, Japanese gyoza are awesome or even steamed Hong Kong shrimp shumai. 3/5 I also got the pho noodles. Although I expected that this would not taste like a Vietnamese pho, I was highly disappointed that this was neither a fusion pho with the chef's own special twist nor even a good ol' healthy home-styled pho your friend's Asian mama cooks. The broth tastes like salted water, the beef is rubbery, and the entire appearance of the meal looked like a wannabe pho. And let me tell you that Yindee up in Morrisville does a fantastic job of putting together their own Laotian twist on Pho. This meal was just a whole sorry mess. 2/5 read more

I am in town visiting Raleigh for work and Googled "best dumplings near Raleigh" and this location came up. I am originally from Flushing New York so Asian and south east Asian food is second nature to me and I've developed a pallet for it. I can say, I'm giving this place 5 stars for a couple of reasons. The food was really good, the variety is absolutely unreal and the service was fantastic. If you are in town and want a good meal that includes dumplings, soup, siu mai or anything really, stop by. I'm an out-of-towner, who ended up going to David's hangry after walking and taking the bus all morning. I was greeted with the friendly staff and sat right away. First impression is that the interior was more upscale than I was expecting, especially since I was going on for quick eats of dumplings. The lunch menu was varied, and as I was alone, I appreciated the availability of small plates because I could still try different foods. I ordered: -David's Original Half-Fried Dumplings: This was better than the shumai, and like the shumai, I love the size of each dumpling. -Open Top Pork & Shrimp Shumai Dumplings: Suprised at the size of these. They're bigger than the shumai I'm used to. I love the portion, but I felt that the seasoning was lacking. It was quite bland. -Malaysian Chicken Curry with Indian Roti: This was the best of the 3 I ordered. Couldn't get enough of the curry, and the Indian Roti was really flavorful on its own. It almost tasted like a savory crepe but with the usual roti consistency. Rather than the dumplings, I would highly recommend the Malaysian Chicken Curry with Indian Roti. It had a sense of familiarity from other curries--almost a fusion between the Japanese and Indian curry--but it had its own distinct flavor, too. If I lived here, I would come to David's just for this. As for lunchtime, there was a good crowd, but there was no wait, and there were a handful of tables available. Pretty dang delicious! Ordered takeout from David's Dumpling & Noodle Bar two weeks ago and am already ordering again! Food is amazing, great portion sizes & great pricing. A few entrees and an appetizer lasts my partner and I a couple days. The moo shu pork and pad thai are loaded with flavor as are the dumplings. I'm typically not a fan of wonton soup but (for once) we finished our order of it. I'm trying to think of a complaint but I have none. I hope to become a regular in person once COVID is over but for now I'll continue loading up on delivery and will continuing exploring the rest of the menu. read more

I may have been having a disillusioned image as I was driving through the rain soaked streets of State one night. On my right was a wrinkled chef flipping dough in the air while barking orders to his assistants. Maintaining a very distinguishable smile. I drove by before I even had a chance for a second glance. I asked around and did Streetview on Google Maps to find out who was behind that smile. Turns out it was David's Dumpling. Considering the fact that there are 100+ reviews for this place, I will keep my usual descriptions out of it. The chance to indulge my cravings that have been deprived since my trip out to San Fran were about to be fulfilled- I hoped. Quite surprisingly, the place wasn't full during lunch. There were a good amount of people, but nothing to fret about if you are coming for lunch. We were seated immediately and our drink orders were place within a couple of mins. Blah, blah, blah. Now for the food. You're given a slate of choices for their lunch portions; something I enjoyed seeing and made me hope that things were made fresh. The quick-stir portions are all $7.95 and the dishes range from the typical Asian fusion trends. You know....General Tso's Chicken, Pad Thai, Cashew Chicken. There is a small selection of noodle dishes, you know, it's their name, to choose from. I opted for the David's Half-Fried Dumplings and Singapore Rice Stick Noodles and my friend grabbed the Pork Shumai- both $5.95 a pop. I was honestly a little worried I was being suckered into coming into a place due to the theatrics of an old man. The dumplings came out in good time and as other pictures show, there aren't many for the price. There's a good reason for this though. What you lack in quantity, you gain in quality. And if you're a reader of my reviews you know how much I love quality. The Pork Shumai actually HAVE meat in them. Pork blended with veggies and a nice sized shrimp slice in there. It almost reminded me of homemade dumplings. Very good start. My dumpling order was a surprise as well. They had enough meat blend inside and wasn't all filler. Good flavor in both and not a hint of MSG present. Now. The entrees came out a little slow for my liking; especially since it was during the lunch rush. Nonetheless, it came out and the waitress was on top of it. My noodles were simple. The way the dish should be. Eggs, curry powder, the correct veggies included, and protein. I can definitely tell that the noodles were made in house and not the store bought type I always buy at Grand Asia. You can tell that the ingredients were actually fresh and not some microwave TV dinner. The dish lacked a little spice for my liking. The balance between the curry, soy sauce and sesame oil was good though. Overall, it was a good dish. It won't leave that "OMG I'm so thirsty taste" like many other Chinese restaurants do. I need to come here for dinner. And actually get a sense of the place and their signature noodle bar. I feel like I'm cheating you by not actually getting a sense of their real product. Credentials - Born and raised in a Chinese household and from NYC (mecca of great asian foods). Craving some asian inspired cuisine I sought out this dumpling and noodle bar. The decor is hardwood, modest and spacious with some bold photographic stills picturing David and his noodles. On to the food: 1. Moo Shoo Pork ($10.95)- thinly sliced pork, wood ear mushrooms, cabbage, day lilly buds, scallions. Pork was extremely tender. Day lilly buds added a nice soft texture to the dish and kept it very moist. Accompanied by soft white, flat buns that are pre-sliced in the middle. Instructions: Make a moo shoo sandwich with the ingredients. The entree is slightly too salty for me, but flavorful nonetheless. Overall a good choice if you are very hungry and love savory foods. 2. Special of the Day ($14.95) - Julienne-cut lamb pieces with scallion. The lamb was quite gamey and had been strongly seared. It was a little too tough for me, but overall had a distinct taste that was a pleasant change from the everyday meats. Scallion was fresh and cut into 3 inch pieces. There was a copious amount of sauce that coated the entree well. 3. Wonton soup - came with the Special of the Day. I am always afraid of ordering wontons at restaurants because they are usually just meatballs wrapped in wonton skin. Not the case here. The pork in the wonton was treated with dignity and was accompanied with carrots and a tiny shrimp. I can only describe the pork as light and fluffy as a piece of meat could possibly be. In the end, I like the flavors that present here. However, the dishes do have a little too much salt and sauce for me, which I can easily remedy by asking for that modification. To keep it real. With noodles and dumplings being in their restaurant name, we had to give those a try. Singapore rice noodles with chicken? Super flavorful and flawlessly executed. Dumplings? Juicy meat on the inside and a perfectly chewy wrapping, Mmm mmm mmmm~ Shrimp rangoons? Crunchy texture with a creamy flavor! So yes, food was wonderful. But was it worth the price? 5 mini dumplings for 6 bucks... 3 ragoons for 4 bucks.... Do the math and each bite cost over a buck. Anyhow, service was pitiful. Our server never came to fill our drinks so we had to ask a random worker for more water multiple times. He also never came to give us the hot sauce we requested so we had to ask for that from the same random worker. What really did it was when we gave him cash for our check and he brought back $10 short of our change. Uhhh were you expecting a 40% tip? Cause that is most definitely not happening with the service you provided. Also, it was 8:45 pm with 2 servers available for 2 occupied tables. He only had us to cater to, so why were you so bad? Really sad. Shu mai best of the night but well below average. Taste is so-so, seasoning light and texture too crumbling. Spici crispy wonton way over fried and dark, texture too tightly packed and crumbling. The half fried dumpling, well, about the same with the texture but worse taste. The green papaya salad was like eating raw papaya, little or no fish sauce seasoning. So bland. The filet and scallop, typical American stir fry with over sized veggies. The brown sauce was bland, consistency was the trend id the night. The scallops was a bit fishy. The filet had a really off taste, really off. We stopped eating. Do not recommend. read more

Vegetarian: They had several vegetarian options for appetizers and entrees. They even had gluten-free meals; however I didn't see any vegan options. I had the vegetable pad-thai for about $13. I didn't really like it that much because I prefer a sweeter sauce. However, the other 3 people I ate with tried and really enjoyed it. Service: The waiter was very attentive and the food came out shockingly fast. It was difficult to understand the waiter because he was so quiet and this led to slight miscommunications but it didn't take away from the overall experience. Overall: I had always heard really good things about this restaurant so I was let down when​ I wasn't blown away. My appetizer and entree were both very average and none of us were excited about our meals. I don't think the food is a good value considering price, portions, and taste. Can I get a woop woop for my 100th Yelp review? :^) I'm glad I'm reviewing David's Dumpling and Noodle Bar for this epic review. Nestled in a little corner building on the east side of NCSU campus, this little Chinese bistro offers a plethora of wonderful entrees mastered by chef David himself. The building is old and unique, and it's extremely clean and well decorated with modern flavor and tons of exposed brick. The dishes are perhaps comparable to PFChang's but MUCH better because they're David's spin on the traditional Chinese dishes, and they have so much more culinary art in each dish than the chain restaurant. On a rainy Saturday night at 6pm, we were quickly seated by the window at a booth/table combination. There were several large parties in the dining room, and our server was still quick to get our drink order. They have about 6-7 rotating draft beers and many bottled brews, and there are quite a few local brews on the list. We ordered the shrimp/pork dumpling appetizer that was served with a ginger sauce. The 4 dumplings were cooked perfectly and had a wonderful flavor! For my entree, I ordered General "Mao's" chicken, which is David's spin on General Tso's chicken. His version has more pineapple and you can get it with extra spice (I got a 5-star spice) with fried rice... and it was WAY better than regular General Tso's chicken! Good job David :) Sara got the nightly special- a seared duck breast with asparagus and bleu cheese whipped potatoes. The duck was cooked perfectly, but the potatoes were a little runny and the asparagus was a little chewy. I'm not a huge fan of those sides anyway, so I'm probably not giving the most objective review of that entree. But the General Mao's chicken was out of this world! I love the modern atmosphere for this cute little Chinese bistro. The dining room is quite large and very flexible for large groups of people. The openness and high ceilings are a bit of a down side to the restaurant because it gets quite loud when the restaurant is full. Other than that, David's is most certainly one of my fave Chinese places in Raleigh!! read more

One thing that stands out about this restaurant is how unconcealed the owner/chef is. Every time I have been here, I have seen him, at some point, either at the bar or strolling around the dining area. Once, he even came to our table to check up on us and we felt so special (ahh, I'm a VIP somewhere). David's menu consists of a nice array of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Malaysian dishes. What I have come to appreciate is the popular traditional dishes such as Pad Thai, Moo Shoo Pork, and Sweet and Sour Soup. I know, I know, I can get these anywhere but it is hard to find a place that makes them well and this place does! So besides the food and the overt presence of the owner/chef, what are the other reasons I like David's Noodle Bar: the atmosphere is great and it has an upscale feel, there is a nice bar, prices are reasonable for the quantity (and quality!) of the food, let's not forget the complementary carrot ginger soup sample (it is amazing!!), and the location is close to NCSU and downtown. read more

This place is perfect if you're looking for a light, but quality meal. I had a bowl of their famous dumpling soup and could tell from the first spoonful that Chef David has an eye for detail. Dumpling soups tend to be overpowered with sesame oil, which is fragrant and delicious, but also gets to be too much in terms of scent and greasiness. This was not the case at DDNB. The "dumplings" were also well made - our only complaint was that it wasn't technically a dumpling. It was a pork and shrimp WONTON, wrapped in WONTON skin. Besides that slight diction disagreement, I'm all smiles. I'll be back to check out their other menu items. read more

My expectations of this place were too high, one of the reasons for my disappointment. As other yelpers have mentioned definitely can use more variety of dumplings on the menu considering it is a dumpling and noodle bar. I have had Malaysian chicken curry before and this was not the right flavor. It was on a sweeter side while others have been more red and fragrant not too hot but certainly not sweet. The steamed buns were okay but the dishes all together were on q salty side. The service was excellent, and the ambience was decent but I don't think the menu justifies the name of the restaurant. Couldn't find fault with this place. It's clean and spacious, decor is minimal but has a relaxed polished feel. The food is tasty and comes out fast we had the open top dumplings and I had a pork noodle soup. Everything was well seasoned, had interesting and varied flavours. I also got a sake cocktail and it was surprisingly tasty Overall we had a enjoyable meal, cooked well, served quickly and the bill was very reasonable. I can't believe I walked by this place so many times and didn't try it. The only change would maybe be wait staff? We were served by the bar tender who seemed to be the only guy working- he was killing it but he probably could have done with some help! read more

Not very authentic or flavorful. Very nuance fusion. Only 4 types of dumplings on the menu - hardly qualifies the name of David's "dumpling bar". Got the roast pork and chinese greens sautéed dry egg noodle. Very dry and flavorless. Pork and shrimp dumplings were gummy and the filling was inconsistent. The frozen shu mai in grocery store taste better. Not recommended but at least they have good service and beer read more

I have mixed feelings with David's Dumplings. It's a bit overpriced and bland but I guess that's due to the demographic they're trying to draw to the restaurant. The ambience is nice and I love the personal decor of David making the noodles and dumplings. It's also very sweet to see him walking around the place from time to time. The foods is decent and the portion is sufficient and filling. However, it lacks in authentic taste. Also, when I ask for hot sauce, all I get is sriracha, wish they had something stronger so that I wouldn't taste just sriracha in my food. This past time I had udon chicken noodle soup. GREAT portion if food! However, it was way too oily for a soup and the chicken was flavorless and a bit slimy. The greens were well cooked with a nice crunch and the noodles were just right (thanks David!). The dish was also very salty :( read more

I've driven by this place a thousand times and finally decided to try with with some friends on Saturday night - I can't believe I've been missing out! Our table ordered a couple beers and a drink called the "Blushing Bride" which was coconut sake with prosecco and a squeeze of lime. If you love coconut definitely get this because it was super strong flavor-wise and absolutely delicious. For appetizers our table had the original dumplings and summer rolls for my friend who is gluten free (they label all of their gluten free menu items which was very helpful!). The dumplings were absolutely perfect - 10/10. The summer rolls were fine but I didn't love the very thin sauce they came with. I prefer a peanut sauce with summer rolls. I'm lucky to have friends who share food so we all tried a bit of each other's meals. Ranked from favorite to least favorite: Moo shu pork. The best moo shu I've ever had. A huge portion with plenty of pork and incredibly flavorful overall. The steamed buns it was served with really set this over the top. This was one of my favorite Asian dishes of all time! General mao chicken. Very crisp, freshly fried chicken in a sweet, tangy sauce with pineapples and peppers. This was the table's favorite. Chicken curry. This was my friend's very first curry and she loved it! Very flavorful and not too spicy. Kung pao chicken. This was the only one that fell a little flat for me. The flavor just didn't punch like I would've liked. Our service was excellent and fast. Like, really fast! Our drinks, appetizers, and entrees came out within maybe five minutes of each other. Overall this is a great place for a date or a night with friends that feels fancy without breaking the bank. All of our entrees were around $13 and well worth the price. Some of the articles hanging in the entryway say they're Vietnamese, however, I believe they're Chinese-Vietnamese? Not that it matters. the food is still pretty good. My friend had the Pho... i'm vietnamese... from southern california.. pho in CA is probably only second best to the real thing from Vietnam. David's Dumpling & Noodle Bar does Pho pretty good... i wouldn't say it would hit the spot for my pho cravings.. but it is still better than some other places i've eaten at in the area. I had the dry egg noodle with pork. my other friend had the same thing but with broth. The brothy one was DEFINITELY WAY better than my dry dish. The broth really gave it flavor.. without it.. it was quite bland. The stuffed eggplant appetizer isn't really worth it. David's dumplings were pretty good. Overall a pleasant experience. the waitress was nice and informative. I also got TEA... it would have been nice if the waitress told us it was going to be a huge pot of tea.. we would have shared it among the three of us instead of getting two separate pots. they've got solid asian food here, but i'm still not impressed overall. for the price.. it could have been better. (i tend to rate my asian food harsher than other foods - after all i LOVE LOVE asian food!) i recommend to people who are hesitant to try new asian food. it's not too way out there for inexperienced asian food eaters to try. read more

It's so nice to have a dumpling place right around the corner. I usually get the half fried dumplings with an entree. The shrimp dumplings are also good. Sometimes when I'm craving soup I'll go for the won ton soup. It's pretty good. I've been here a handful of times now. The first time there was a rude male host- I think he was probably a student at NC State who needed to be working but really didn't want to be. I got the pad Thai which was ok. I usually love pad Thai and it's usually a bit sweet which is what I like, but this one was not. I now go for their lemongrass beef salad. The dressing is delish- although they could be a bit more generous with it. The service yesterday was good, but the times before it was pretty slow. Overall this is a great restaurant that can really be casual or more fancy. It is not overpriced and you will likely leave satisfied. I would recommend it. read more

We found this little gem of a restaurant when we were wandering around on my birthday a few weeks ago, in search of something new to try. We had an absolutely fantastic meal here. Was really looking forward to trying this place for david favorite dumplings so thats the first thing I ordered and they live up the expectations. Everyone should get an order of these here as they were for sure my favorite thing on the menu. I got the Cha Chiang Mein which I thought would be similar to dan dan noodles but it really just tasted like spaghetti with some seasoned meat on it. The pho soup was ok. Service was great though and although we found a parking spot on the street in front i can imagine it would be tricky on a busy night. Appetizer - half-fried dumplings, of course. Everyone raves about these dumplings, and everyone is right. The kitchen also sent us some ginger-carrot soup, but I'm allergic to carrots (I know) so I only had a tiny, delicious sip. Entree - roast pork and dumpling egg noodle soup. Really lovely soup. Somehow, despite it being full of roast pork and dumplings, this felt really clean and healthy. The broth wasn't too oily or salty, and the pork, dumplings, and greens were cooked perfectly. Dessert - red bean ice cream, which I'd always wanted to try. It's good, not great. Alcohol - nigori (unfiltered, cloudy) sake, at our waiter's recommendation. It's very sweet, so it goes well with spicy food (I added hot bean paste to my soup, so this worked out well). Our waiter was very sweet, and the atmosphere was nice and casual. Great dumplings but we also enjoyed the chicken curry dish and the spring rolls. A repeat for sure.

I didn't really like the food. The food had weird flavors that I wasn't really fond of.

Sooooo good! Everything! I loved the Hot & Sour Soup. I loved the quick service. I loved all the dumplings and fried delights. I loved the bahn mi sandwich that happened to be the special the day I was there for lunch with my friend. He bought, but I think lunch was fairly inexpensive. The staff was so friendly! I was greeted and helped right away. My take out was ready quickly and the food was fantastic! The edamame dumplings are the perfect texture and surprisingly full of flavor. All fresh ingredients, the best dumplings I've had in years. The hot and sour soup was perfectly seasoned, my new favorite. Lastly, I've been searching for good Singapore noodles since I worked near Chinatown in NYC. Nothing has ever come close but these are better than the ones I fell for 20 years ago. Just the right amount of oil and flavor with fresh veg and perfect texture. I'm so glad a friend recommended this spot. True comfort food that brings a smile to your face and leaves you feeling nourished and satisfied with a lovely front of house staff to match. read more
