I had been meaning to come here for a few weeks, and coming out of school I decided to look at the places I had bookmarked nearby. Behold, David's Dumplings and Noodle Bar. Table for one on a Sunday night please! David greeted me and walked me over to a table. With only one other couple sitting a few tables down in the whole place. (puzzled sweetly) I went to the restroom and came back and boom! water was already on the table. (+) Justin was my waiter and he knew his stuff. Very polite and attentive too. We exchanged a few words over the stuff I recognized on the menu versus his personal opinion. I then told him to recommend me something off the appetizer menu in which we agreed to the Original Half-fried Dumplings. I then decided on the Malaysian Curry Chicken and Hot&Sour soup. Dumplings were first and perfection with a side sauce to compliment. Soup was definitely hot and sour. Because I am the most impatient patient person I know, I don't know if the tear I drew was from the hot, the level of spicy or how delish it was. Along came the curry chicken which was blazin' with a side of white rice. Because the previous dishes were quite filling for one with a pint of Sapporo, I made my way only through a quarter of the dish and I asked Justin for a to-go bag. David serves soups from a small kitchen in the middle of the dining area which includes the bar as well. I love this place! So sad, too bad... When David's Dumpling & Noodle Bar opened up I was so happy to have a sorta authentic Chinese restaurant ITB. There were some items that stayed true to what I've learned is Chinese food while others strayed off that path a bit. Especially given the breadth of what they cover. Fast forward to the last six months and both visits were a downgrade. I had a stir-fry lunch where the sauce was a bit gloppy and gooey. I cook some Chinese every now and then and I never could understand how to make a sauce like this. Just way too sticky and dark, a standard American-Chinese offering that is just blech to me. My most recent visit brought me out some really over-steamed and brown dumplings. Really odd, they didn't look anything close to what a pan-fried dumpling and bore no resemblance to David's earlier dumplings. The roast pork-noodle dish wasn't bad but didn't have any complex flavors to it. Mostly salt, disappointing. I bang my head on this one, outside of Cary and Morrisville I haven't found very good Chinese in the area. I have to guess that to stay in business, these Chinese spots just need to serve what the public wants. Which is unfortunately, not what I want and appreciate as good Chinese. Really great food for a great price! I liked the dumplings, they aren't nearly as fatty and greasy as other dumplings - definitely a fresher taste! Their sake is so good as well. If you go, the lemongrass beef and papaya salad is a MUST! So great. read more

I grew up in New England and have been looking for over 6 months for an excellent Asian fusion or Chinese restaurant. After trying 4 different places we tried David's Dumplings near the NC campus on Hillsborough St. The food is absolutely delicious. The restaurant is spotless, the waitstaff attentive and the cost is reasonable. (Personal favorites: chicken pad Thai and the chicken satay. ) read more

He always stick with the traditional dishes that was meant to be eaten by native and doesn't worry if whte ppl are going to like it. Most Asian fusion places claim authenticity but then hold back bc they r afraid that the traditional flavors will scare away most white palettes. Went there a few times with my friends while staying in Raleigh, as the place was one block away across the street from our hotel. Honestly, it was kind of surprising to see David, a little old man, rustling around clearing tables, placing the cutlery, moving chairs, greeting customers, not to mention cooking in the kitchen. Usually the chefs hide themselves inside the kitchen. My friends love the sui mai they got, which comes in a steamer. The hot and sour soup is clear in color, unlike most thick, brown broth you see in the U.S., but that's how it's done in some parts of China. I totally loved the Malaysian Chicken Curry with Roti. It's an appetizer but is filling enough for as a small meal. When I tasted it I was like, this is tastes Malaysian! While they are all called curry, Indian curry, Thai curry, Malaysian curry, Vietnamese curry, Japanese curry... they all have a different flavor, not to mention within the same country there are many varieties too. But something in the ingredients will mark a curry's nationality. and this one totally has Malaysian flavor. I am really glad as it's hard to find Malaysian food in the U.S. For dessert I had the ginger ice cream. Another rarity in the U.S. It's home made, with generous pieces of ginger in it. Delicious. Great food, terrible service, they'll leave you stranded. I've been ordering takeout from David's for a while. It's the best asian food around for sure. However if there is an issue with your order, you have no recourse. They don't answer their phone whatsoever. Recently I ordered a small salad, couple egg rolls and an appetizer. With delivery fees it was something like $40. Food shows up and there's just a salad and two egg rolls. Grubhub refunded me the price of the entree ($15) and David's would not answer the phone to make things right. So much for dinner, and I paid $25 for $7 worth of food. Not cool. read more

Only good thing is dumplings in this restaurant but these people have no idea about how to cook decent Asian food. I had been there 4 years ago thought they would have fixed their food issues but they did not. You would be better off with pack of ramen noodles and stay home. The restaurant is nice inside service is decent but food is the problem, Pad Thai noodles were just given with few pieces of chicken tossed over noodles and washed with soy sauce , that was it ! There is no way this place can end up with 5 stars , people either do not have any idea about decent food or yelp allow fake reviews for businesses. If you love dumplings and noodles then this is not the place for you. Dumplings were lackluster in flavor and poorly executed. Noodles were bland. The only saving grace of our dinner here was the mu shu pork. Service was horrendous. In more detail: - We started with three of the dumplings to try. Shrimp Rangoon would have been a neat concept but the cream cheese was not distributed evenly along the entire shrimp leaving me with a bite of fried cream cheese (sure, it was tasty) and a bite of fried shrimp. And it wasn't meant to be eaten in a single bite. The half fried dumpling--supposedly a signature dish--came out soggy. The whole point of half fried is to get that super crispy part to contrast the rest of the dumpling wrapper in texture! The crispy spicy wonton was actually fried well and pretty tasty, so I guess there's that. - Mu shu pork was actually really good. Great wok aroma, and super tasty. It came with steamed buns instead of the more traditional pancake but it was tasty. The only downside was we had way more of the mu shu filling compared to steamed bun ratio-wise, but overall tasty. The dry sautéed noodles were bland and not sautéed. At all. Was literally like a bowl of wonton noodle soup without the soup but without sauce or wok stir fry aroma to compensate in flavor. The wontons were so overcooked that they fell apart as we tried to pick them up. The pork was bland and dry. - To top it all off, service was slow and inept. We were seated promptly but then our server ran by us three times telling us she'd be right with us, then would disappear for several minutes. The restaurant wasn't even busy yet. Took nearly 20 minutes to order our bottle of wine and apps. Essentially much more of the same the entire meal, and more waiting once we were ready for our check. We wanted to treat ourselves to a nice evening out but sadly were let down...and annoyed. The only people around us who seemed to enjoy themselves were the hipsters who like to be seen eating at trendy places but don't care if the food is actually good. read more

When I looked up Noodle Bars near me David's was not listed at the number one choice, and frankly I'm confused. The staff was very attentive and welcoming, especially our cool waitress. She was quirky and full of smiles and great suggestions. Everything on the menu sounded good my friend and I both had trouble choosing. We started with the original half fried dumplings; they had great flavor and consistency - the cabbage slaw on the side was also very good. For the main course we both decided on the Lo Mein Egg Noodles with chicken and added broccoli. Upon request, you can get the noodles spicy (be aware: light spice means LIGHT spice, little to no added flavor). The broccoli was a highlight and the noodles were also very, very good; however, the chicken was a little bland and chewy. Still nothing to really complain about. The atmosphere was pleasant and quaint with a nice display of local art. The chairs were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. Outstanding food and service! Was hopeful that these 1/2 fried dumpling would be something special, and they were - light and extremely flavorful. We also had the beef pad thai and Mao's chicken. My wife mentioned it was some of the best pad thai she has had, and the Mao's chicken is a lighter version of the traditional General Tso's and absolutely delicious. I have never been disappointed at David's. They give decent portion sizes (I almost always have leftovers) and everything I've had is very tasty. On our most recent visit, we started with Vietnamese Spring Rolls, which were typical spring rolls in my opinion (so delicious). They have a good assortment of vegetarian options and I decided to try Moo Shu Tofu (I've never had Moo Shu Pork). I'm so glad I branched out, it was delicious! I've also never had steamed buns before so I can't speak to how they'd compare to other places, but these were very soft and held together well when I filled them with tofu and vegetables. My boyfriend had Pad Thai. It was unlike any Pad Thai I've ever had, though still tasty. I'm excited to eat my leftovers! Stayed at the hotel across the street and found this via Yelp and What a FIND! I was first offered a Ginger Carrot Soup sample, and that set the tone for the rest of the meal. Started with the appetizers: Stuffed Eggplant with Shrimp; Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce, and the Half-Fried Dumplings. All were cooked just right except the Chinese broccoli was a bit on the bland side. Ordered the Malaysian Curry Noodled Soup at the server's suggestion. Simply fantastic. Not impressive - maybe by Raleigh standards given sparse Asian or even other impressive options. I was drawn in by a craving for some Asian food and some glowing reviews. I ordered carry out and I've never met a more bored hostess who also did not bother to include or check for utensils. I ended up getting creative with two sturdy coffee stirrers as my chopsticks. I had some shumai, fried shrimp fusion thing, and a couple other things. I felt the essence of the execution fell short though I can see what they were trying to do. The meal was somewhere between meh and ok and the bored hostess who left me without a way to eat my food in the hotel when everything else was closed sealed the deal on my 2 star rating with 1 star reserved for total disasters and 2 stars for would not recommend going (at least as a reminder to myself). read more

Dinner at DD&N on a Wednesday night, it was not crowded and we were seated immediately. The service was fast and efficient due to other servers stepping in to deliver food, refill water, etc. We had veggie spring rolls, Tofu pad thai, Vegetable lo mein, and white wine and we enjoyed everything. I really enjoyed my time here. It's an Asian fusion restaurant with good service and delicious food. I wanted to get real pad Thai but their pad Thai was curry flavored instead of tamarind, but it was still very good. Their pan fried dumplings appetizer was good too. I was disappointed when I finally had the chance to try this place. I was craving authentic Asian food, but the meals fell short of expectations. Started with a ginger soup sample. The ginger was too strong for me. We had the Half-Fried Dumplings for appetizer, $5.95 for 5 pieces and pickled vegetables on the side. The dumplings were slightly bigger than bite-sized. However, the filling was so densely packed that it was like eating meatballs covered in dumpling wrap. Given that it's been a long time since I had wonton noodle soup, I decided to order the Roast Pork and Dumpling Egg Noodle Soup ($10.25). It came with 3 slices of cha siu that were dry, 4 dumplings that were bland, and choy that was not cleaned well at the stems and too crunchy for my taste. Needless to say, I was not impressed, except by the delicious roasted garlic and the soft, moist egg noodles. This is not the kind of meal that I was hoping for, though the conical shaped bowl that contained the meal was cool. Boyfriend had the Singapore Rice Stick Noodles with Beef ($11.95). It came with green onions, carrots, egg, bean sprouts, and onion. Again, lacking in flavor. The venue is cozy and I love the decor. However, it was pretty warm in temperature. Service was quick. We were in the area and wanted something light but tasty. It was hard to find parking but there is a parking lot close by that's free after work hours on a week night (phew). The restaurant has a pretty good modern feel to it, so our expectations got heightened a bit. We ordered their hot & sour soup, papaya salad, their original half fried dumplings and a Chinese greens and dumplings soup. I enjoyed the dumplings soup, but the broth was super oily where you can taste it - so I can't say it was the best dumplings soup I've had but I enjoyed the dumplings (like a wrapped meatball - not your usual Chinese or chives dumplings) and the greens. The half fried dumplings weren't that great, again like meatballs, but this is coming from someone who enjoys traditional home-made Chinese dumplings. The papaya salad was ok, not the freshest and somewhat bland - it happens that the vinegar sauce was found at the bottom of the dish. There's not really a traditional hot and sour soup but this isn't your typical Americanized hot and sour either.. We ordered the ginger ice cream which is true to it's name and had ginger chunks even. It was a little strong for me but big enough for two :). read more
