Best place to go for bulk food items! I especially love the bulk spices, which is ideal when trying new recipes that call for small amounts of ingredients you don't typically have on hand. Produce is fresh, mostly organic and local when possible, a great alternative when you're in need of greens on a non-farmers' market day. The Davis Food Co-op is one of those stores that makes up Davis and gives it character. I still remember going to Co-op back in the day with my mom and wrapping the cheese in plastic (part of the membership share). Not only has the Co-op been part of Davis for ages, but it truely is a wonderful store. Their produce is always fresh, and their prices on groceries are actually cheaper than many places in town (including Safeway). Dairy (eggs, organic milk, yogurt) are all cheaper than anywhere in town, and they are better for you, because they are organic. I mean why buy Lucerne milk at Safeway that is from cows with hormones in it, when you can go to Co-op and buy organic milk from happy cows for less? Co-op is a great place, with friendly people, good prices, and excellent shopping choices. Not only do they hit home, but they aid in making Davis what it is. read more

The way health food stores used to be. I drive out of my way to come here. I mostly come here for the deli which has many stations: hot food ("breakfasty" and "linner"), salad bar, Indian food, sushi, and a cafe. Lots of options, including carnivorous dishes. If the coffee in the carafes was fresher I would use the cafe more. There is plenty of shady seating outside amongst the nursery for picnicking too. There's not too much patchouli here (not that I would mind) and the staff is fun, helpful and cool (no snide looks for not bringing your own bags). If you need help in the supplement section just ask--there are many knowledgeable staff here. I don't know how many types of olives they carry at the Olive Bar, but it could be dangerous for an olive lover like me. There are other Mediterranean goods there as well, and it's conveniently next to the cheese counter that is manned by some serious-looking cheese-meisters! Organic meats and fish are in the back of the store next to the wine and beer. There is a pretty good size Raw section next to the bulk bins that have plenty of raw nuts. And as the nation goes crazy to be informed about GMO, so does the Co-op with easy to read signs on produce with lots of varieties you can't find at other grocery stores. read more

Davis, California is home to the three best grocery stores in Northern California. It's weird, really, that with such a great grocery store chain as Nugget having two Davis locations, an even better co-operative grocery store can stay in business. But they do. Davis Food Co-Op is not only the best place in town to buy wine (though Costco is Woodland is arguably a better option), but it's the best place in town to get beer, meat, seafood, baking ingredients, cheese, and chocolate. In short, the co-op is the best place to get groceries in Davis, save for the fact that both the farmer's market and Nugget seem to have better produce most of the time (admittedly, I don't care whether my produce is certified organic, only that it is fresh and tasty - the co-op has the best selection for organic produce). I love that their Pliney (when they have it) is a dollar less than other stores. I love that you can get any beer you want by the bottle (no, I don't want to try a 14.99 6-pack of that fancy craft beer I have never tasted before). And they keep nearly all their beer refrigerated, which is really key to maintaining the quality of a hoppy California IPA or crisp German Pilsner. So I love the co-op. I'm a member, and I think it is a great place. I recommend you check it out the next time you need to get groceries. One caveat: get your cleaning supplies, shampoo, toilet paper, et cetera at target or a drug store, because Co-Op can be a pricey place to get these things (I love the hippy grapefruit dish soap, though). read more

This place is like any other grocery store however some items are more pricey than others because they are locally grown, specialty, or just expensive. This place has hot food, cold food, beer on tap! I recently found out this place has a designated spot outside to drink beer! So if you wanna grab a beer ditch the pricey bar then come to this place for a cold one. The best part is you can buy single beers. So 1.50 for a beer while getting a nice ambiance is not bad! This place also has array of dispenser item:nuts, rice, flour, legumes and more! They sell makeup, lotions, books, clothes, bomb.com coffee beans, and have a ton of variety on vitamins and supplements! There is an extra fee for non members. Excellent place to shop! Fresh produce, knowledgeable staff, and great food. I shop there for my own groceries-- but I definitely know to keep to the outer sides of the store; the middle is just asking to create a big total. ALSO you can totally volunteer some hours and get discounts for your groceries! If you volunteer just 4 hours a week (you can pick when and which department) you get the superworker discount-- the same as an employee! 16% off your items! Yes so it's nice times. Check it out. The people at the Davis Co Op are very friendly. It's comforting to see familiar faces. I enjoy the music they have at times Some of the service is great, especially when you need to place an order for a special item. The cold salad bar looks nice and I appreciate the small changes that they have made. The hot food bar could use some big improvement! When you walk in it's on the left and the food is always the same. It doesn't appear appetizing at all Many times it looks really dried out, it is always the same rotation of food. The white rice looked like the edges were dried and crunchy. When you walk in it doesn't draw your attention to want to eat to choose something from it. It is just not exciting or yummy to look at. If you have been to the Sacramento co op That looks nice well kept fresh and seasonal. The other reason why I'm only giving it 3 stars is at check out, there isn't anyone helping you bag, It sucks your paying your trying to bag your own groceries at the same time and people are waiting behind You. Been coming here since I was a little kid. I remember they used to have these weekly coloring projects where you could have your drawings posted on their wall. While the coloring thing doesn't seem to exist anymore, I'm still glad to see the Co op going strong and providing local, organic and fair trade foods for Davis residents. HOLY SMOKES! I am in love! The Davis Food Co-Op is the mecca of all Co-Ops! This location totally beats the Sacramento location. When I walked in, I was bombarded with the different hot foods available --- from sushi to soups, from sandwiches to yummy desserts ---- ahh! They have a HUGEEE wine and beer selection. Their bulk items are amazing! OH their veggies --- amazing! When we bought our bok choy and brought it home, I went ahead and washed it. AMAZINGLY clean --- no dirt, no bugs! I would normally have to drown and rinse bok choy several times, but not this time! FYI --- I guess Sacramento co-op and Davis co-op offers a membership plan. Davis food co-op is not the same owners as the Sacramento Food co-op. Ever since I started doing my grocery shopping here, I've sworn to never buy my produce anywhere else in Davis. Goodbye, Safeway, I hated your tasteless, overpriced (and sometimes rotten) vegetables anyway. The Davis Food Co-Op has the freshest vegetables I have ever seen in Davis, and the best part is that they're all organic and mostly local, too! The vegetables are noticeably tastier than what I usually buy at Safeway and the Nugget. The prices are excellent, as their organic vegetables are sometimes even cheaper than the conventional ones at Safeway and The Nugget. They have a couple of conventionally-grown produce items, such as onions, which are a lot cheaper than you can get at Safeway and The Nugget. Onions are only $.49/lb, and ginger is $1.99/lb. I also must add that I am also very happy with their selection of vegan and gluten-free cookies. Their GT's Kombucha is $2.45 per bottle, the cheapest I've come across so far. Yay for good selection and cheaper prices! What a wonderful, health-conscious, happy place to shop at. The staff is friendly, with the exception of one cashier who was in a bad mood when I went there two years ago... Dunno if he's still there. read more

The Co-op has a lot of things going for it, even for non-members. Don't be intimidated if you are not a member! It's convenient to downtown and if you are a recreational grocery shopper like me, especially from areas without these types of stores, it will be a treat for you to take a look around. I visit Davis from time to time and this place just feels good. Lots of nommy stuff and a fairly substantial prepared foods areas. They have a deli counter, sushi, sandwiches, hot foods, and a salad bar. They also have good breads, an olive bar, and cheese if you want to put together a little picnic/snack situation. There is an outside seating area in the shade, so even if it's hot out it's comfortable for lunch. The sandwiches are in the $6 range. The bread is super fresh. The meats are not icky. They have little order sheets at the deli counter, so you don't even really have to talk to anyone and they get it right! Some items are a little pricey, but I think it's a pretty good value based on the quality of the items and supporting the coop. This place kind of reminds me of a local neighborhood Whole Foods, or Berkeley Bowl. The main reason I stopped here was because I found out that they carry Fat Face popsicles, which may be my favorite ice cream pops. They didn't have a whole lot in stock (it is summer and I bet lots of people buy it!) but I managed to find my favorite flavor of mango+sticky rice! There's also a huge deli with lots of options plus create-your-own-sandwich (use the sandwich form). The sandwiches are enormous! When I checked out, they asked if I was a Co-Op member - not exactly sure what the benefits are of this, but I didn't bother asking since I don't live around here at all. My only reason for NOT giving this place 5 stars is because of one incident. I was shopping here one night and I saw a roach right by the front door. Now, I worked in restaurants for quite a while and I realize that where food is, roaches may go. But, I thought I should tell someone to stop a roach infestation. The first person I saw was a guy stocking produce. I told him there was a roach to which he replied "Roaches are natural and have to eat too." While that is totally true, I still don't want them dining where I'm buying food. I have been back since the roach incident and as far as I can tell it's roach free. I really like Davis Food Co-op. The produce is good, they have some great products, and the prices are reasonable. I live in the Bay Area now and I actually miss shopping at DFC, but I don't miss that damn roach. read more

I'll be honest, I'd written the Co-op off at first as another hippie-local-organic food shop that would price itself out of my daily shopping handily. But, whatever. I'm a little hippie, and I like to eat well, and I dig the co-op vibe, so I figured I could work it in every once in a while for a treat when my back pocket wasn't feeling as slim as it often does. And after a few of these treat runs, I realized hey, this actually isn't so bad. Sure, the price point is a notch above, say, Nugget, but the selection is solid, and the do-good warm and fuzzies are worth a few cents on the dollar most days. Plus, everybody there is unrelentingly nice. It's amazing to be in a business and get the sense that all of the employees want to be there too -- even cashiers and stock boys. My previous co-op experiences have been in student-run houses, which have always been notoriously poorly run, poorly sanitized, and bogged down in consensus democracy. Not so here. I haven't had a glimpse into the inner workings, but this is a smoothly operating machine, as far as I can tell. So, my once-in-a-while treat has been slowly but surely turning into my "Which is more important? Local or organic?" go to grocery store (with bonus points for a pretty great beer selection). Tack on a super worker discount (16.5%), and I may never leave. read more

I cannot believe I discovered this place AFTER I graduate from Davis! The store entirely reminds me of almost a neglected Whole Foods. You have freshly made food in the front that you can buy to-go, which includes Indian food, hot food, cookies, pre-made burritos/wraps, soup, and a salad bar. Produce section here isn't very big. Great cheese selections! Even better BULK selection. I've always wanted to buy a bit of one spice without having to buy the whole bottle, and all this time I could have came here. They have a whole aisle dedicated to rice, beans, grain, nuts, candy, spices, and teas. They even have vitamins, shampoo, conditioner, and lotions in bulk! Fill the container to however much you need. I love how they are so concentrated on being organic but also have your regular grocery shelf items. The Davis Food Co-Op is one of the places I miss the most since moving to Los Angeles. I used to live within walking/biking distance of this place. The bulk bins were awesome! Especially for spices and the coffee selection was one of the best. The prices for staples like pasta, rice, soy milk, dairy, bread were pretty reasonable. Maybe not as cheap as Safeway but I am willing to pay a little more for a place that supports organic and locally grown choices. The Co-Op also has a good selection of natural health/beauty products and items for the home. The produce selection was ok. I usually bought most of my fruits and veggies at Pedricks. I was going to subtract 1 star because the whole place is a little grubby but I give it back because the experience wouldn't be the same without the grubbiness factor. read more

I very much enjoy their bulk dried goods section; this includes spices, powders for culinary things, teas, grains, legumes, nuts, and miscellaneous snack items that can fit in plastic dispensary towers or bins. I believe you can also get bulk olive oil and tofu. Their produce section has a lot of stuff you wouldn't normally find at mainstream grocery stores, especially in terms of the diversity of varieties and cultivars of different fruits (I'm including eggplant under the technical "fruit" label as well.) They had some variegated pink lemons and makrut limes the other day- don't normally see those at Safeway, if at all. Their herb and mushroom selections are similar to Nugget's in terms of diversity as well, though Nugget may beat them out in the herb department at times. Their cheese selection is also good. The employees at the butcher station (and in the store in general) are pretty cool and friendly. My roommate really likes their sausage selection, like buffalo cranberry and something with lamb (curry?). Apparently those are made in-store. Basically what I like about the store is the variety of products, especially from smaller businesses, that you don't normally get to see at mainstream grocery stores. Oftentimes it's more expensive, but I have found some great products and nice new types of produce here that I enjoy having access to. Apparent from edible things, they also have a nice soap section if you're interested in smelling like sandalwood or something for a few months, which I was at one point in time. At some point I also had to get a multivitamin, so I bought something from their extensive vitamin/supplement section, though never returned to purchase more because it occurred to me that I could get something like One-A-Day and pay much less for it elsewhere. The three stars are mostly for their organic selection: the best in Davis. Combined with the Nugget, I can get most of the groceries I want/need. Prices are a bit weird: some things are excellent values, some things are terrible values...good luck. The produce is acceptable, and you can't do much better in Davis because the Farmer's market is a joke. I don't buy meat here, so I can't really comment on it. The fish almost always looks awful though. Their peanut butter cookies are terrific and their beer selection is very good. For some reason, people that shop here are the worst drivers alive. High-points: Great gluten free, Vegan, local/organic and exotic ingredient supply, OK prices compared to "whole-paycheck", great staff (always smiling and loving what they do) Low-points: Small or limited selection from butcher and seafood area... the Co-op is my go to for many many ingredients that I will never find. It really is the creme of the crop as far as items offered, so you will pay a little bit more on the whole...but everything in your bag will be premium. This rating could be anywhere between a 2-4 So three worked out nicely. The food is pretty good, however I feel that most of their salads have WAYYYYYYY to many onions. My options are limited and that makes me sad. Also, the customer service seriously sucks. I feel like it would kill the people behind the deli counter to smile. The cashiers have a tendency to be a bit friendly, but not by much. I feel it's a bit snobby in it's own right and that's a little sad. I want to LOVE Davis Food Co-op but it seriously lacks that friendly vibe that you would assume a small, local business would give off. I did have an issue, three times they put onions on my sandwich after I crossed it out AND told the deli person that I'm allergic to them. This happened three times in two weeks. I finally called the store and spoke to the Deli manager (or a manager of some sort). She was very nice and gave me a $20 gift certificate and a free sandwich. So at least the managers know how to deal with customers! Maybe you should train your staff a little better, to make it more of a welcoming environment. read more

No one will ever be the same after going to this grocery store. Berkeley bowl in Berkeley, CA has been compared to it, but it is not even in the same category. The freshness of the food, the wonderful variety and quality of the meats, dairy, bakery, bulk foods, etc. And the fact that as a member you own the store makes the Davis Co-op just about the best grocery store in the world. I love the co-op in Sacramento, probably because I live much closer to Sac than I do Davis. However, I will go out of my way to shop at the Davis co-op. It reminds me of Zupan's in Portland (as if that's relevant to anyone.) Great selection of hot food in two locations - one is a self serve bar by the entrance, the other is Indian food near the deli. Huge dried goods selection - I always stock up on dried chick peas, beans, everything else to make chili. Tons of cute gift items, most are sustainably made or eco-friendly in some way or another.
