i "heart" the davis food co-op. man, it's come a long way since i went to college in davis. it's like a whole foods in it's type of offerings but even better since it's owned and operated by it's members. i found things here i can't even readily find in SF! like kaffir limes for only 10 cents each and indomandaquats, limequats and kumquats from local growers. now if they had loquats, i'd be in CO-OP HEAVEN!! they also have a pretty extensive meat section, not pre-packaged stuff, a real butcher, which is unlike some of the other co-ops in the same network (like ukiah and san francisco's rainbow). i don't really eat meat, but i'd like to have the option. their bulk section is A-F-IN-MAZING! and they carry this honey soymilk that i love and is so hard to find, made locally in sacramento. (sigh) i wish i still lived in davis so i could go to the co-op every day. and then head over to Osaka sushi next door for a few rolls : ) and they were so nice to my pooch. Yogi gives it 4 paws up! The fact that most, if not all, of the organic produce comes from within less than a 2 hours drive of the DFC is mindblowing to me. That sort of freshness you can't buy with money. And the seasonal nature of that sort line up is just cool. Very cool place. read more

I went here, because everyone was raving about how it was "better than Whole Foods" and things like that, but I completely disagree. Yes, they have a wider selection in terms of supplements, teas, herbs, spices (bulk food stuff in general) as well as personal care. However, the prices are insanely high (I'm generalizing of course). People are not lying when they say they are high. They really are. I'm a Whole Foods regular and I tend to do a lot of price comparisons. I want good quality, organic (when affordable), and the lowest price I can find. The things I regularly buy at Whole Foods are much more expensive here. I did half my grocery shopping here and finished off my grocery list at Whole Foods. Having the receipt from the Co-op with me, I was comparing the prices of the things I could have bought at Whole Foods. Unfortunately, most of the my reactions were like "NOOOOoooooOOO! Should have just bought this at Whole Foods X_____X" because it was cheaper there. Also, keep in mind that they add the additional fees, if you're not a member. I don't think being a member is worth it, considering the prices. In addition, at Whole Foods, you get 10% off, if you show your student ID. So, all in all, you're mostly paying less at Whole Foods... All in all, I would say...go here, if you want more options AND have the money to pay for it. Otherwise, if you want that organic, and somewhat more affordable prices for quality food, Whole Foods is the way to go or even the farmer's market. (I can only say this about the grocery items, not the already prepared food) Then again, you have compare the prices of what you normally buy. You can't say that everything is more expensive here than at other stores. Some things are about the same price. Some things may be cheaper here than at Whole Foods--same goes for any other grocery store. One store does not have all the cheapest prices on every single item. read more

Too many natural food places, that trace their origins back to hippie days, come with lots of attitude: self-righteous moralism. (See Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco, for instance.) I've been a member of the co-op for years, but rarely shop there anymore. I've noticed recently that the service has improved and they've added to the deli, but the deli bar food is disappointing. I bought a breakfast burrito there once that was warm but undercooked - as in the tortilla was still doughy. The coffee is consistently weak. The chocolate/candy selection is out of touch. But, it's a great place to buy bulk spices. read more

I really like the Davis food co-op because they stock inexpensive, basic products (cleaning supplies, cereals, tissue, bottled water, etc) in addition to slightly more expensive organic and local products and produce. A bit perk about the Davis food co-op is that you can mix and match their beers, they have a large selection from microbreweries that I wouldn't buy a six-pack of without trying first, and they let you pick and choose the beers. read more

Best Co-Op eeeeeveeeer; well, that I've been to so far. The service is exceptional, the products divine. Their bulk section rules my world. I love their loose leaf bulk teas, which I could easily collect all of, and all of the goodies I can pick through in this section. They have a lot of local products as well as organic merchandise out the wazoo. One of the best parts? Their personal care section is HUGE. There are all sorts of alternative products that one can purchase, that are eco-friendly and good for your body and skin. From facewash to lotion, to bulk Dr. Bronners to make-up, Davis Food Co-Op just can't be beat! Oh, and if you join the Co-Op membership you are a part owner and get sweet discounts. I go to the Coop wayyy too often and spend way too much money there. There is so much variety, the employees are sweet, and I like the wide array of bulk foods that makes reducing waste easy. While the store sells a lot of items that are expensive, I feel that it still offers items that are less expensive and still organic. Additionally, they have tons of stuff from Woodland and local farms. The store feels more like a community and less like a store. Gotta appreciate that. read more

I used to have such qualms about going to Co-ops because they always seemed so pretentious and full of themselves. Meaning, it always felt like they were all about the community and local stuff but really they were sitting bak enjoying the profits. In changing my diet to all natural, local, organic, non-artificial foods, the co-ops I've been going to have been a dream come true! It is so much easier to find REAL food here and not all the preservatives, salts, added colors, chemicals, corn derivatives, and refined flours. It is so much easier to shop here for that kind of food than a standard grocery store. The Davis co-op has a great layout with exceptional products. While it seems like most of their prices are higher than their supermarket equivalents, that's not necessarily the case. In fact, the produce I've been buying at this co-op was cheaper than Safeway and the Nugget! Yeah, they have a lot of specialty foods that are higher priced, but that's not everything they sell. They also have a great bulk foods section with great prices on grains, rices, seeds, nuts, granola, and more! You don't have to be a "member" to shop there, but every time they ask and I say "no, I'm not a member," I feel like I'm not part of some exclusive club or something! ha! And while you might get looks from other patrons if you forget to bring your own bag, the employees won't judge you if you have to receive a bag from them. So, overall, it is prety nice place to shop. Definitely a yuppy-hippy kind of store, but trying to eat an all natural diet is difficult, and if I have to weave myself in and out of wannabe health-conscious soccer moms, and hippies buying matcha in bulk, then so be it. Not to mention, you feel less guilty because so much of their inventory is from local producers and suppliers and not created in a lab somewhere (well, maybe some stuff, but that's the thing about food...because of companies like Monsanto, it is almost impossible to *really* know where your food is coming from unless it's local.) read more

The Davis Co-op is amazing!!! Never has my conscience felt so great.. haha. I hate shopping at big box stores and where I'm from in Australia 2 supermarkets own 80% of the market share in groceries (Coles and Woolworths). This place just has a great feel about it. Super nice staff and super ethical products. I joined the other day and discovered that you can volunteer for 2 hours a month and get 5% discount. Looking into it. I love the co-op it is a fantastic grocery store. I love that as a customer I am also partly an owner through being a member!! It also has a fantastic supply of organic and local food. I suggest trying springhill cheese (which is amazing)!! It also carrys alot of ecofriendly cleaning products like Mrs. Meyers, Seventh Generation, and Method! Much love overall to the Davis food co-op. Gotta love the challah. Produce sometimes ridiculously priced, but then you just steer to the conventional section and make do. Great tea selection (boxed and loose). Jasmine was a particular favorite. Additionally, the chocolate section always made me drool a little (alas, also $$, but for a special treat sometimes, after a final or while studying for one its okay). People watching here was also a bit of a riot too. I was disappointed that I never made it to one of their wine tasting nights or cooking display/courses. A nice resource overall. read more

Checked out the Davis Co-op for the first time today and I definitely do enjoy the wide variety of things they carry. However, on a student budget- the grocery and produce here can be quite pricey. Trader Joe's or the Farmers Market are a little more friendly for my wallet when trying to go more for organic and fresh. BUT, it seriously does have alot of things you probably can't find elsewhere. I really enjoy their chocolate, oil and flour selection. I've been on a search for coconut flour and oil around here- mission accomplished at the co-op :] Anywho, I'd shop here for more uncommon items like coconut flour, raw energy bars, etc. A great stop for those living and eating paleo/primal in Davis. As for produce- I'd stick to the other stores if you're tight on budget. read more

The larger corporate organic stores and big grocery chains never had or ceased making truly great deli salads that you find at Davis. It's rare to see anything creative at other places, a lot of it due to corporate controls and kowtowing to mainstream tastes. You can truly measure a great grocery store by how creative they allow their employees to be, and the heirloom salads I got here for $3 rivals the rare Michelin star restaraunt I visited in Los Gatos. Organic grocery stores used to never have slop in their hot meals and stuff resembling a fast food chain they've become mainstream so it's usually quite disappointing. It's heartening that stuff like Davis coop still exists... maybe they should have a tag line: " the real thing." Their produce section is gorgeous and has photographs of local farms. The outdoor area has a piano and it's such a nice place to hang out. It has the same indie vibe as Berkeley bowl. Oh the DFC. Regardless of the time of day, it always smells delightful in here as soon as you walk in the door. I spent my days freshman year as a cashier, and it was definitely one of my favorite jobs ever. The DFC rocks. The selection is great, prices are reasonable, staff are friendly, and it's a co-op - as a member, you're also an owner. The only complaint I have is that the staff work much more slowly than other stores I've been to, but they do seem happier, more interesting, and more genuinely friendly than the staff at the conventional stores. read more

I've been a long time supporter of local businesses and co-ops. After coming to the Davis co-op, which I heard such great things about I was EXTREMELY dissapointed. The first thing I noticed: their elaborate decorations/sculptures with huge fancy lettering and a nice fancy teaching kitchen across the street. I thought, "wow, they must be raking in the dough". Once I went in I was extremely dissapointed. While they offer vegan deli options (which is outstanding!) They place it inches away from meat dishes, allowing meat sauces etc, to spill over into the vegan dishes, therefore true vegans can not partake. The same goes for their cold case deli. They have everything mixed together with no effort what so ever to separate meat from veggie or vegan. Being a co-op I expect a more conscious awareness of people's dietary needs and lifestyle. I then began shopping around to find common "chemicals" such has advil, aspirin, pepto etc, even proctor and gamble products! What kind of people are running this place?! Their herbs are labeled as "may contain dairy"???? I have nothing to say on that. They have the HIGHEST PRICES in all of Davis. It's a joke. Co-op's are supposed to be run by the people, for the people. Not many co-op's I've been to have their own fully equipped private teaching kitchen with a nicely manicured yard. Even their basic, plain granola is a rip-off. Far and above, higher than anywhere else. I understand that local produce costs more and I'm happy to pay for it, but the Davis co-op takes advantage of it's customers-we aren't all fancy UCD professors, in fact, the majority of us are students! Wise up! In the world of co-ops, this place is a disgrace. It's very sad to me that I would gladly chose Whole Foods over this place any day. I was always so proud to not support corporate businesses like WF, but when their prices are lower, service great, and I'm not walking past a gaudy tomato sculpture, how can I not? Everyone I meet/talk to, I encourage them to not go there. Sure they have an "ok" selection of some hard-to-find items, but Whole Foods outdoes them there as well. You can special order anything for no extra charge. The other co-ops I've been to are typically vegetarian. But more importantly, they ONLY support environmentally friendly/sustainable products. One such co-op stopped carrying a certain brand of "natural" products due to the overall companies ethics and impact the products had on the environment. The Davis "co-op" abides by no such ethics or standards. It wouldn't surprise me if they sell Colgate and Chlorox bleach. read more

Incredible if you're into the kind of food that you'd expect to find at a coop. It's all a bit more trendy (some would say hipster) because you have a lot of organic and environmentally conscious options, but there's also enough of the normal options to keep you within your budget. It's definitely not the same as shopping at Safeway but I think the difference in quality more than makes up for the difference in price. Not to mention the staff is all super friendly. Mixed feelings. I would do all my organic food shopping there if I could afford it. But I can't, so I grow, forage, and shop at cheaper shops like TJ's, Costco, and Whole Paycheck. In my next life, I'll come back as a retired UCD administrator and shop nowhere else but the Co-Op and Nugget. I have a crush on the DFC...I'm not afraid to admit it. How can I not love this organic wonderland? They rock my socks with Free-range meats all the way to vegan friendly eats.. They have a great bulk-bin selection with everything from loose leaf teas to Sunny Gummies (strawberry sunnygummies RULE!). They also carry these nummy weifer cookies filled with strawberry yogurt filling. Oh, oh, oh! And the toiletry section...I love it ever so - you can even fill your empty bottles of Dr. Bronners - squee....oh, oh...and their crazy fresh produce...let's face it - they carry so may magical things here - even organic cotton yarn which is kinda on the expensive side. Hippie tax. I am insulted. So I was sent out to get corn meal one day. An essential ingredient for corn bread. I came across this store the one day I was in Davis without my GPS. I live in Sacramento, and was seeing a lady who lived there. Found this place and proceeded to ask a guy who was working there where it was. Didn't know. Asked another "employee".. didn't know. Asked another, and another, and guess wha.. DIDN'T KNOW. I got a blank stare once, and finally when I asked a person (in the aisle that it was in) I found it 5-10 feet away. When I paid for this single item, I noticed a charge on my receipt that wasn't corn meal, wasn't tax, and wasn't a charitable contribution. It was a surcharge because I didn't belong to the tribe. Fuggin hippie tax. Sheesh. And the folks who didn't know where the corn meal was, all group members who didn't get much of an orientation. Bleh. Give me a Save Mart or Lucky's any day. read more
