FROM EXCELLENT TO POOR. After dining here for over ten years and being met with cheerful, service and excellent food, we just had one of our most surprising disappointments. With a reservation, we ordered chicken and ravioli. The chicken was fair but the ravioli was green, warm at best, way overly spiced and was awful--it tasted like chalk. We called the waitress, who rarely appeared, to inform her--she showed only slight interest and said, "Oh, I'm sorry," and disappeared. After only a few bites, I left my meal untouched. I had asked her to inform the kitchen, but don't believe she did. We expected some kind of response, but only got a full bill, which we paid with a 'zero tip' and a 'sad face,' and left. That evening, we received a text and link from "The Management' asking for input. We gave it--and never heard a thing back. It's sad to see some of what have been the nicest restaurants in Sacramento going downhill--this is one of them. read more

Sacramento-Headed out to Rombauer winery for some tastings and wanted to fill up before we got there. This place, reminds me of an old country club restaurant with warm cozy features and a welcoming staff. They have a great array of things to choose from on their menu, so it was very difficult for us to make a decision. First things first, we ordered a bottle of wine along with an appetizer of summer melon with prosciutto. Absolutely delicious! Our entrées included an albacore-tuna sandwich, shrimp Louis salad, and a chicken sandwich. all three of us thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambience. I am so glad we gave them another shot!! Our last visit was a huge disappointment, but tonight totally turned my opinion around! We were early for our reservation, so we had drinks at the bar - I had the Yuzu Lemongrass Collins and my husband had the Peachy Keen. My drink was absolutely beautiful and delicious! His was really tasty too. We sat outside on the patio and it was a perfect night for that! We started with the arancini - SO good!! Met a friend during the holidays for lunch to catch up - I made reservations online as I knew how busy they get at lunch - they open at 11 and our reservation was for 1115 - when we arrived we were promptly sat in a booth ... The vodka or gin option martini, I choose Vodka - ya can't go wrong w extra olives. Pepperoni pizza tasty, nice simple and very cheesy. And the brussel sprouts. The sauce on top was not what I expected. Not pleasing to the eye. Was not so tasty to me (meh), but my friend enjoyed the taste. But the way the brussel sprouts were seasoned and cooked made up for the sauce. Yum yum yummy. The waitress was very attentive and friendly and the other servers as well. The service overall was excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes to try. As many reviews mentioned, the calamari was delicious, nice and crispy and I can confirm that it lived up to the hype. One dish we tried was the fettuccine, which came in a red meat sauce. I don't remember if the menu described it that way, but I was expecting a white sauce, so it was a surprise. The noodles were green. I'm guessing they make their own pasta, and it was tasty overall. I ordered the pork chop, which was flavorful and cooked well. However, I didn't care for the sides that came with it. I would have preferred something more classic, like mashed potatoes or broccoli. Their pizza was a standout. I had the asparagus pizza and really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it was baked in a stone oven, but the crust and flavor were excellent. The steak dish was just okay, not bad, but not my favorite of the night. Overall, I'd definitely go back and try more of their pasta dishes. The quality of the food was unfortunately not as good as I was expecting. I'm a repeat customer, which is why I chose to bring my family for Mother's Day, but the experience was disappointing overall. The New York steak was very chewy, the asparagus was fibery, my kids mentioned that their pasta was cold, and the pizza oddly tasted like "peach." On top of that, the service was inferior. No one came by to ask how our food was, and our bottle of wine was simply left sitting on the table while our glasses remained half full. I did address our concerns with the waiter, especially regarding the quality of the steak, and he said he would let the chef know. However, despite the manager walking around the restaurant, no one even bothered to come to our table to check on the situation. Restaurants should not focus solely on volume, especially during occasions like Mother's Day when people bring their loved ones to celebrate. Maintaining quality and preserving the restaurant's signature standards should remain the priority. Honestly, I regret bringing my family there for Mother's Day given the experience we had. We made reservations for a Friday night at 5:45 and were seated right away with no wait. I really enjoy the ambiance at this restaurant and would love to come back and try their happy hour at the bar. We had some bread to start which there is a cost for now (I don't think that's completely uncommon now though) - it came with a balsamic glaze dipping sauce which was a little to strong for me so I requested butter which hit the mark. We had the tuna poke appetizer which came with homemade wasabi potato chips. The chips were really good and seasoned nicely. The poke could have used a bit more flavor, but still fresh and delicious. My main dish was the Little Neck Clams linguine dish and it was chef's kiss! The linguine was house made and was seasoned with Fennel, Slow Cooked Tomato, Calabrian Chili, Roasted Garlic, Lemon, Herbs and breadcrumbs. The topper was the fresh Parmesan cheese on top. I loved this garlicky dish so much! The clams were fresh and cooked perfectly. Everything just melded together! I ended up eating the whole dish but man was it worth it. I have tried a mix of dishes like the short ribs, different pastas, steak, crab cakes, clam chowder, and more. I hadn't been here in a long while, but knew they consistently had high marks in my book! I was not only excited to see my friend again, but knew we would enjoy the atmosphere at the Grille. He also remembered dining here way back when, and couldn't agree more. The wait staff was very friendly and seated us right away. I love so many things on the menu, but since he was paying, I tried to keep my appetite on the light side. I ordered the Baby Greens: Waldorf Farms Green Apples, golden raisins, Laura Chenel Goat Cheese, toasted sunflower seeds, and a balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was extremely delicious and had all the ingredients that I enjoy in a salad. My companion ordered the Prime Rib French Dip: Swiss cheese, caramelized onion, horseradish crema, Au Jus on a French Roll. He too enjoyed his meal. I didn't have a reservation which was no issue; I was able to be seated after a very short wait time. The restaurant is spacious, modern, clean, yet cosy with lots of seating & a large bar area. I was super excited for the food since the reviews raved about it, but overall it missed the mark. Our waitress was extremely kind & attentive. However, it took a long time for food to come out & flavors were mediocre at best. 10/10 - Crispy Calamari: these were lovely & tasty; batter on the calamari was the perfect amount & seasoned nicely; the fried slices of lemon were a nice surprise & fun to eat. 8/10 - Ora King Salmon with green beans added: for the price, it left more to be desired especially for not having a green vegetable to accompany; I added green beans to give it more sustenance even though it was $5 more. The ambiance is upscale without the pretentiousness. I haven't dined here in ages because I don't often get out to the Arden-Fair Oaks area. Last month, I met up with a group of friends for Sunday dinner. The 10 of us ate and drank having a fantastic time. I had the short rib. It was tender and flavorful. The horseradish mashed potatoes were amazing. It had a nice kick of horseradish but not enough to set your nostrils on fire. (Yes, it was made with dairy. Lactose intolerant me, took a lactase enzyme pill). I also tasted a bit of the spaghetti carbonara pilfered from the plate of my dining pal. It was yummy. Mmm. Nothing like the taste of fresh made pasta and Zinfandel Grille sure knows how to make it. Ingles, our main waiter, was terrific, as was Bryce. Very patient and attentive with the group. We were able to split checks for three. But the women's restroom had a wonky structured stall. There were two stalls. The first one was super tiny. The width and depth was insanely narrow. Pricey for what it is. At this price point I'm expecting cloth table clothes not a worn wooden table and Denny's style booth seats. Limited menu but offered some specials well after we'd studied the menu and made our decisions. Offered a 3 course fixed price option I went for. Caesar salad was good. Calamari was good but the dipping sauces lacked character and the cocktail sauce in particular needed at least some horseradish. My wife asked for a simple substitution on her chicken parm. Standard came with mashed potatoes (really?) so she asked for pasta. No particular type, just pasta not potatoes. Server said she'd have to check. I've never been to a restaurant like this that couldn't make a simple switch like this on the spot. But she came back and said there would be an "Up charge". My wife said ok. My chicken piccata over angel hair was good but the capers were hidden by the sugar snap peas someone thought belonged in the dish. It lost some of that traditional piccata taste with a few capers fighting with the sweet crunchy snap peas. Rounded out with tiramisu included with my fixed price selection. Now the bill. That up-charge was $10. Then they put in $13 for the included tiramisu. With two glasses of wine the bill topped out at over $200 with tip. I pointed out the mistaken charge for the tiramisu and they took it off. And when they brought it back they had reduced the up charge to $6. More reasonable but still, really? So we probably won't rush back. Not terrible but not worthy of the average four stars here on Yelp. read more
