We were seated at one of the best tables in the house, which was a wonderful start to our celebration! They always serve complimentary bread and butter (for hubby, since I'm gluten intolerant), and the chef also brings out a complimentary tasting. Today's was blue cheese with dates--a surprisingly delicious combination! We skipped the appetizers because, as usual, we never want to miss dessert, and went straight for the entrees. The setting is beautiful, we came on a Sunday night and it wasn't crowded. The large paintings and mirrors were beautiful. The food was just mediocre. There was nothing that made any dish stand out. We ordered the gnocchi appetizer and scallop appetizer. The scallops barely had any sear and zero flavor to them. When we received our bread we asked for butter and was told it was already on the bread and not provided any. Why have a butter knife at our setting then? Other tables had butter to complement their bread. We ordered the ribeye and fish as our main courses. The fish was cooked perfectly, but again lacked any flavoring or anything to make it special that we would want to return. So, my previous review was 4 years ago and I promise I'll actually give you my latest impression. However, I have to go back a few days. I was planning a trip north of here to Oregon, visiting a high school friend. I was starting from San Jose and the Costal Starlight Amtrak train was a perfect fit, timing wise, so I almost booked it, but an idea. I remembered my experience at the Fire House and changed my plan to leave in the afternoon, get dinner in Sacramento and catch the Starlight when it arrived later. I avoided doing the dishes and was treated to an incredible experience in a beautiful location and perfect food. I had the special which was Swordfish (after a couple of drinks one of the waiters looked just like John Travolta. I am so thankful to have the layover with an amazing meal in my tummy. You may want to drop in, but it is popular on Friday nights, so I suggest a reservation. Easy to schedule a reservation. I am to celebrate my 31st birthday alone (just moved up here and away from family) and the staff were incredible. I felt welcomed and appreciated. They not only acknowledged my birthday but were thoughtful of my food restrictions too! Serving mostly American dishes, you can enjoy an elegant romantic atmosphere that suits a dinner date or business meeting. We had reservations for the basement where they have outside seating. When we arrived unfortunately they had told us it was reserved for a private event. I'm not sure why they didn't tell us that when we had the reservations a few weeks prior to. Although the staff was very polite and helpful with the menu, they gave us recommendations on specials and items that we have never tried before for appetizer. We got the caviar with peaches and the scallops with a corn salsa. It was paired very well with the sweet and salty aspect of the peaches and caviar. The scallops were cooked very well and tasted amazing. I wish I had more. I was really hoping that they had the beef tartar, but they did not have that in season when we went. I got the seafood cioppino, which was very interesting on how they served it, they had each section of the seafood then they poured a broth into the dish. Which was different than the typical cioppino I've had in the past. But the broth was super flavorful. My friend got the beef ribeye with chimichurri, which was very delicious and the potatoes were very well seasoned. One for bread (complementary), one for apps, one for water. Your main person takes care of the order, drinks and check. Food Items: Arcadian Mixed Greens: It was a side salad, no rating. Freshed strawberries and sliced apples. Braised Mary's Chicken: 4.1/5 - friend said chicken was nicely prepared and tasty. Pan-seared Local Black Cod: 4/5 - Delicate fatty fish (sablefish). Felt like it was not the star of the plate per se, as the cream and vegetables packed more of a flavor punch. Vanilla Crème Brûlèe: 4/5 - Was fine per my friend. Chocolate Mousse Cake: 4.1/5 - Nice portion. Not overly sweet. I will say, sellands market has a dark chocolate mousse bar that may have spoiled me with the intense dark chocolate take on mousse. Both cocktails were fantastic. I did request a Negroni 'UP' (which up charged it by $2). Bread was fresh, warm. Butter with bread was mild. Overall, great experience. Server staff were attentive. Visited December 17th..see my receipt as always. This is always one of my last stops while staying overnight in Old Sacramento. It's upscale and classy yet has a romantic and warm feel to it! Great happy hour and dinner menu ( their steaks are the best!). My boyfriend and I had a great time with their 2 wonderful bartenders...Gage and Carly. They are friendly and true professionals! We of course got their prime rib blend burger with fries during happy hour...so filling and always done perfectly! You can't beat the happy hour drinks (Martini). We also bought a bottle of wine to bring back to our hotel room. We always have a fun yet relaxing time after a long day of shopping! The restaurant has a vintage charm, it's in an old building with elegant chandeliers and warm, classic décor. The lighting was on the dimmer side, which makes it hard to get a decent pic. We ordered: * Prime Dry-Aged New York Strip Steak : The steak itself was well seasoned and tender, cooked to a nice medium as requested. However, the vegetables on the side were a bit bland, slightly soggy, and the presentation felt underwhelming for the $65 price point. For a signature entrée, I was hoping for a bit more, perhaps crispier potatoes or a better vegetable side than carrots n zucchini to complement the steak. * Herb-Crusted New Zealand Rack of Lamb : I didn't try the lamb myself, but it looked beautifully cooked : juicy, pink in the center, and topped with a flavorful herb crust. The Firehouse had their Firehouse Wedding Showcase today in their courtyard. It was set up beautifully with table setting arrangements, food, and various vendors to complete the wedding experience. Upon entry, you were offered a glass of sparkling wine before heading down to the courtyard. A buffet was set up with a charcuterie display, bbq pork sliders, Mac n cheese, and broccolini. Other hors d'oeuvre were served by staff, and staff walked around to pick up discarded items. A vendor was displayed from photography, music, photos, cake, etc. An open bar was also available during the event. Dine Downtown Restaurant Week 2026 with my friend Cristi, a Thursday night dinner. If not doing valet, better to park at the garage rather than street metered parking which is enforced until 10pm. I started with a very berry mocktail, and the first course for Dine Downtown was a salad as the only choice, and a small cracker bite in between courses. For mains, I went with the dish (pan-seared black cod) over the chicken -- no steak option this time. For dessert I chose the creme brulee, and she had the chocolate mousse cake. For my birthday the brulee came out on a plate with candle and Happy Birthday message, but there was also an additional slice of caramel cheesecake brought out. Me and my husband really enjoyed our first time visiting the firehouse restaurant. Service was impeccable. Everyone was on point and ready to meet the needs of all customers equally. I ordered a New York Steak entrée. Although it didn't come out medium as requested, it was not grossly overly cooked and I still enjoyed it. My husband ordered the double bone pork chop. The restaurant was pretty cute with thoughtful decor and a beautiful wine cellar. It's located in an old firehouse, kind of obvious because of the name. They even kept the circle stairs that goes up, but that's blocked off just for show. Parking in the area can be a bit tricky, but they do offer valet service. The service was attentive and the food overall was very good. We brought two bottles of our own wine and paid the corkage fee, which was a nice option to have. The halibut was slightly on the dry side, but the steaks were excellent and cooked perfectly to a medium rare. The appetizers were a good portion and great for sharing with the table. The duck breast was moist and flavorful, and the rack of lamb was especially impressive. The Caesar salad was great and they even throw in whole pieces of anchovies!! We ended up being the last table to leave, which says a lot about how much we enjoyed our evening. Overall, great service, delicious food, and a lovely atmosphere. Would definitely come back. Firehouse Restaurant had been on my Sacramento bucket list for a while, mainly because of the patio. I remember walking down the alley once and catching a glimpse of it through the opening--it had those charming brick structures, lots of greenery, and little fairy lights. It looked so romantic, and I always thought, "One day, I'm coming back here for dinner." Well, I finally did on Saturday, June 14. We did not have a reservation, but when we walked in, I asked the host if the patio was open and if we could sit out there. He had a really thick European accent. Honestly, I couldn't tell, and neither could my friend. We didn't understand a word he said, and he already looked annoyed that we even asked. We didn't press for more info because he seemed pretty bothered, but we gathered that the patio was closed for some reason. He sat us in the bar area, and to be honest, I wish I had just left then. I'd never been there before, and for the price, it just wasn't what I expected. The bar area was freezing. The A/C was blasting, and it made the whole meal kind of uncomfortable. Our waitress was nice, and I let her know I was on keto. When she asked about bread, I told her I couldn't eat it, but my friend would, so to bring it out for him. No problem there. I ordered the filet mignon, medium rare, and reminded her again that I was on keto and avoiding carbs. She didn't mention that the filet came on a bed of mashed potatoes, which I didn't notice on the menu either. So when the food arrived, there it was--mashed potatoes. The steak itself was tiny. I don't know how many ounces it was supposed to be, but it looked like a couple bites, not a proper entrée, especially for the price. She came back to check on us, and I said I wished I'd known it came with mashed potatoes. She said, "Oh yeah, I should've mentioned that since you said you were on keto." Then she offered to bring something else, like more vegetables, or said she could bring a salad if I wanted. I asked if there was a side salad, and she said no, only full-size ones, but she'd bring me the menu. She was really sweet about it and kept saying she just wanted to make sure I ate something, and that she didn't mind putting it in quickly. The way she said it made it sound like she was going to comp the salad, especially since it was her oversight and there were no smaller options to swap in. At first, I said no thanks, but she insisted, so I agreed. I ended up getting a Caesar salad, which was literally lettuce, some Parmesan cheese, and oil and vinegar since I couldn't do the croutons or the dressing because of the carbs. Then came the bill--and there it was. A $17 charge for the salad. I was honestly shocked. It felt misleading because the way she phrased everything made it seem like it was a courtesy. So overall? Not worth it. The ambiance wasn't great. The food didn't live up to the hype. The patio--which was the whole reason I came--was closed, and the service, while polite, felt disconnected from the experience. There are way better restaurants to try in downtown Sacramento. Our server was Kordt and he was a very friendly and kind person. We had a nice table in the back corner. My husband had the sea bass and he really enjoyed it. It was baked and came with artichoke hearts and collard greens plus mashed potatoes. They had a vegan dish as a special the night we were there and it was spiraled zucchini with carrots and asparus with a beyond meat ragu. Very very good. The service was excellent and the bread basket was very nice. My husband had a cocktail and I had a mocktail. In addition the creme brulee was delicious! This is my first visit since it's new ownership and it was a beautiful, delicious courtyard experience for a wedding reception. The wait staff, bartenders and overall management were flawless. We were served petite filet mignon with mash potatoes and green beans that included an iceberg lettuce salad starter. My filet was cooked to perfection and the grade of beef was excellent! The salmon filets were thick and juicy - unlike most banquet servings. The chocolate mousse pie had flecks of gold on top for presentation and was silky with just the right amount of sweetness. The venue offered valet parking that could be validated by the Firehouse making parking easy since Old Sac's landscape is tough to hike in dress shoes. Oyster and duck don't require much time to cook but did not receive them until 7:30 pm when four of us needed to go to a concert at 8 pm. The building is gorgeous -- all brick walls, old-school elegance, and enough ambiance to make you sit up straighter the second the waiter approaches. The wine list is so extensive I'm pretty sure it has its own ZIP code. The service? Extremely polished. The servers glide around with the confidence of people who definitely know which fork you're supposed to use and are praying you don't ask. Food-wise, it's fantastic. Steaks arrive looking like they just graduated summa cum laude from culinary school. The oysters are elite. The desserts whisper, "You deserve this," right before your bank app sends a push notification asking if everything is okay. And honestly, the best part is the atmosphere. This place was just WOW! Beautiful, classy, and totally gives off that speakeasy vibe. We came in pretty late so there was no wait time, which was great. The staff was super nice and attentive, and the food was so good. I ordered the Firehouse Prime Filet Mignon and it was perfection; the flavor was incredible, the bordelaise sauce was rich and delicious, and the meat was literally like butter in my mouth. For drinks, I had the Rose Marie and my husband had the Tiki Tiki; both were great choices. This has been our route forever at least 50 years.. no matter what you get it's gonna be awesome. I absolutely love the beef. Any of the beef choices are to die for.
