So it's Christmas Day and we are starving!! We ate sushi and snacks the day before plus lots of alcohol. We went down the Capitol and took pictures with the tree! Franticly we searched for something open on Christmas on yelp. Called like 10 restaurants and they were the first that responded. They said no reservations till 8:45 but the bar was open so that's all we needed. They are located in the Hyatt which is really nice. When we walked in there was some huge buffet going on. We asked the bartender and he said we were welcome to eat for $54 a person which included the buffet and a glass of champagne. Done!! We each had like 4 or 5 servings. There was an eggs Benedict station with sausage and bacon an waffles. They had a full seafood bar.. Including crab lags!!! Omg I'm in heaven. There was a meat carving section and all the fixings. Potatoes were the only disappointment but with all this good food who cares lol. We stayed away from the salad bar ofcourse for obvious reasons lol. I loved their dessert bar, so much I went twice. Thanks for the complimentary wine for the check-in. The bread/butter/tapenade made me smile. Did I need to eat the whole basket of bread? Yes! I'll get in some extra pushups later. Vero water was lovely. It made me want to stay hydrated. The tonic water was exceptional. I skipped the gin. I could have used a butter knife for the fillet. The taste was just as good as the buttery texture. The brussel slaw brought a tear to my eye. Is that crispy bacon? Am I in heaven? Dessert: carrot cake. Carrot cake is my weakness and I didn't want to leave a horrible review because of a subpar carrot cake. No problem here. It's too late for me but save yourselves! Dawson's is unfortunately the epitome of a hotel restaurant. The concept is good but the food execution needs a lot of work. I had the prime rib and it was just okay. But the flavor of the lobster mac n' cheese was so bad that I couldn't take more than a few bites. It was made with some cheese I'd never heard of and mixed with heavy cream. Whatever the combination was, it was awful and just tasted greasy. I figured that a little dessert could help perk up the evening so I ordered the pear pie-like item. It was dry, lacked sweetness, and nearly needed a knife to cut through it. Sigh. . . I am staying at the hotel where this place is located so room service is so convenient that I've had to use it twice now. I have not eaten in the restaurant but can say that I find the food very good. The first time I ended up with one of their wraps and it reminded me of a great tasting Gyro. Feta cheese and all. The fries were thin and crisp just the way I like them. Nice and salty as well. Not too much but just the right amount. The second was desert. I just had to have their carrot cake and it didn't disappoint. I have it pictured in this review. The cake was super moist with fantastic flavors and pineapple inside. Cream cheese frosting all around and in between. He caramel sauce was the best I've had. Great addition to the cake. Easily could feed two people but I ate it all and don't regret a thing. Service: excellent (Ardy is an amazing waiter) Food: very good Basket of assorted bread and spreads are given as you are seated. I had the seafood cioppino. They give you a lot of seafood. The picture I had took does not do the dish any justice. My pot was filled with jumbo shrimp, crab legs, pieces of lobster, clams, muscles, and large scallops. And the smell is amazing as soon as you lift up the cover. Bf had the filet mignon w/ garlic sauce, which can with a small side of vegetables And a side of lobster mac and cheese. We had been wanting to try this place, but hadn't gotten to it, so we decided to check it out during this year's Dine Downtown week. Had dinner here last evening and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so we will definitely be back to check out items from their regular menu. The restaurant is located inside the Hyatt. Parking structure was pretty full by the time we got there for our 5:00pm reservation, since they had an event going on at the hotel. They validate for 3 hours, which is nice. The ambiance was warm and comfortable. It's upscale and refined, but not at all stuffy. Our server John was great: friendly, professional, and attentive. We had everything on the Dine Downtown tasting menu (corn flake crusted quail & tuna tostada as 1st course; wagyu bavette & striped bass as 2nd course; chocolate date cake & pistachio cheesecake as 3rd course). In addition, I also had their house salad, which is mixed greens with figs, marcona almonds, and I substituted goat cheese with blue cheese. Everything was fantastic! We also had 2 glasses of Zinfandel from Sonoma, which was also good. When we hear of "pre-fixe" or "tasting menu", we often think of smaller portions. But to our surprise, there was plenty of food, and we left feeling stuffed! The pace at which our meal was served was also just right. We didn't feel rushed at all. My husband and I decided to try Dawson's during Dine Downtown. I will say that the service here is great, but the food during this event was extremely disappointing. We generally like to give restaurants we've never been to a try during Dine Downtown because we like to see if it's worth going back to. My husband and I both ordered the grilled octopus on the menu which ended up being 2 pieces of small calamari on a bed of sprouts. For the entree, we ordered the aged New York Strip which was tough and very small. It was probably a 4 ounce cut of meat with 3 baby potatoes cut in half and 3 baby steamed carrots. I understand that for an event such as Dine Downtown and It being $40 per person, I guess a person's expectations shouldn't be too high, but for a more upscale restaurant like Dawson's, we expected the quality to be better. I would be fine with small portions is the quality was there but the steak was a tough cheap cut of meat. The dessert was a pineapple cheesecake which ended up being the best things the whole night. I'm not sure if I would come back and retry this place. My suggestion would be, if participating in an event such as Dine Downtown, either focus on quality of the food and ensure it's up to standards, or don't participate at all because I think a lot of people take advantage of this event to try out new places to see if it's worth going back to. read more

My friend was staying at the hotel where this restaurant is so we decided to have dinner here, worst decision ever. We sat at the bar and ordered some sparkling rose and wine, both were served to us in dirty glasses, mine had lipstick on the rim. The bartender wouldn't even come over to give us new glasses he told us to put it on the bar and he'd give us new ones and seemed like it was a hassle to him. I ordered the crab cakes, the first one was fine but when I bit into the second one it was filled with shell and basically inedible. We decided to order dessert and ordered the shortcake. In between ordering the shortcake and getting it the rude bartender (old guy with a ponytail) left for the night without telling us we were getting passed to someone else. When Rob brought us over some sorbet I said this wasn't what I ordered, he said "oh yah the other guy said you ordered the shortcake but this is what was up there for your table..." I had booked a reservation at Dawson's to celebrate my birthday with friends. They seated our party of 11 by the kitchen, which meant there was a lot more movement and noise near us. Our waiter was the older, Polish gentleman. I mention that he's Polish because he found out one of my friends was also Polish and they spoke Polish together throughout the night. Overall, I enjoyed spending time with my friends but did not enjoy celebrating my bday at Dawson's. I'm certain when I made the rez, I had mentioned it was to celebrate a bday and even though my friends wished me happy bday throughout the night, when the dessert came, there were no candles or acknowledgment. Even if I hadn't mentioned my bday in the rez, I would think that a fine establishment such as Dawson's would ask their guests - especially a group of 11 people - if they were celebrating a special occasion. Prior to us ordering, we had asked if it was possible to have separate checks to make paying easier but the answer was no. When the bill arrived, it was nearly $800 and each of us had to go down the list to calculate what we owed. It took us awhile because there was ONE check for ELEVEN people to look at. Our waiter kept hovering by our table (it was near closing time) and by the time we handed him the check with all of our credit cards, he said out loud in Polish something along the lines of "Finally!" This really pissed me off b/c this would've been a lot easier if we would have had separate checks. Other parts of the night that didn't go right: a friend received his wine in a glass that still had lipstick stain on it. When he sent it back to get a cleaner glass, we could see that the bartender merely poured his poured glass of wine into a new glass versus pouring a brand new glass of wine. For those who ordered the wine pairing to go with the Dine Downtown meal, the last wine arrived at the table ten min after the dessert did and after we had to track down our waiter. Had a wonderful dinner at Dawson's in the Hyatt Hotel. This is a very nice restaurant where you can have a nice dinner with friends or a romantic evening with a special person. Linen tablecloths, low lighting, excellent service from the hostess to the bussers. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, made an excellent wine recommendation, and was attentive to special requests. In addition to the dining room, there is a small bar area, and you can eat at the bar. The menu is not very large, but most people could find a option they'd be happy with. Prices are on the higher end, but the food quality and customer experience are worth it. I selected the Local Market Fish entree, which this night was a Corvina filet, pan grilled, served over pureed parsnips and a sucatash of peas, sweet potatoes, and parsnips along with a light cream sauce. The fish was perfectly prepared and delicious. Beautiful crust and moist, flakey meat. The only thing it lacked was salt and pepper! My friend chose two starters as her entree. She had perfect scallops and a Caesar salad. For dessert we shared what was a sizable Bananas Foster tart. My favorite taste was the accompanying ice cream. The tart cream filling was okay, but the bananas we're a bit riper than I prefer. All in all, the food was terrific, the service was excellent and the setting was great. Such amazing time at Dawson's. We celebrate our daughters 16th Birthday and the services was very welcoming. I have to say the staff was on point. Just wonderful service, Ardy was our waiter and he joked with our kids. When it came to ordering Ardy said, I have a special menu for kids. He came back and did his spill on food and if we had any questions to please ask.... I have to say Ardy made their experience amazing. He made the kids feel very comfortable with ordering and made them feel special. Ardy is a wonderful waiter that I have never encountered and great with his customer service all the way around. The kids loved the food so I definitely have to give it to the chefs. There food was soooooo good. The birthday girl enjoyed every taste and all the kids. A great place for a 16th Birthday Dinner. We were seated in a great area in the back and were waited on very quickly. Our waiter (I wish I remembered his name!) was GREAT and we ordered coffee with Irish cream and I had the dulce de leche cheesecake and my husband ordered the chocolate soufflé, which we were warned would take 15 minutes. He brought out the French press coffee and all the accoutrements and it was the best coffee I have had in a long time. It made me want to go out and buy a French press. So good. Next came the desserts. Delicious and decadent. My cheesecake was perfect, down to the banana chips on top. My husband's soufflé was worth the short wait! So creamy and delicious! The food and service were mediocre, but their attentiveness to food allergies earned them a 1 star. If the reservation states gluten allergy and the patron repetitively repeat "allergic to gluten", please ensure the food you serve is gluten-free. Taking the allergy nonchalantly is not acceptable. My friend went home with a terrible reaction to the gluten that was in her food. She was terribly ill, and all could have been avoided if the restaurant backed up its claim that the item is gluten-free or recommended we dine somewhere else that can meet our needs. read more

Went in for a late Monday night dinner and wanted to be in and out. Ended up having fantastic food and service, which started with a welcoming smile from the front desk that seemed genuinely glad to see us, even though they were closing in 10 minutes. Next, came the very friendly and informative server assistant, and I am sorry I don't recall her name, however she was top notch. She delivered the hot, incredible bread basket that had two really nice offerings, with delicious butter that had some sea salt on it. Our server stopped by next, and he was a true professional and at our request, kept us moving along at the perfect pace. My son and I split everything, had a crisp wedge salad, bone-in ribeye with a couple of house made steak sauces, and a loaded baked potato. I'd give Dawson two stars, the Australian Wagyu Bavette Steak was dry and the Dungeness Crab Cakes came with an aioli that was too strong for my liking. I do have to say the crème brûlée was good.
