Oh La Puerta... Mi Amor, how I have missed you during the wretched virus!!!! But tonight, you did not disappoint. The street tacos were stuffed. Yes, stuffed with meat- carnitas and asada to be exact-- and so, so flavorful. The corn tortillas were not too thick or hard (usually a tell-tell sign of freshness!). The chicken flautas (rolled tacos) and hard shell carnitas tacos were served with a side of sour cream, fresh guacamole and tomato salsa. But their claim to fame?!? The must have "sopa de albóndigas" (meatball soup). I swear, it's the cure all for every ailment, fever, cold, body ache, not-feeling-well or simply the-worst-hangover EVER. Loaded with perfectly cooked veggies (a lot!), scrumptious meatballs (with fresh herbs and rice) and a broth that burns (hot!!!!) but I won't have it any other way good. So, so good. (I've had their meatball and chicken soups; hands-down, meatball wins every-time!) Unfortunately, dine-in is still closed. Fortunately, take out is still available. When you do/can opt for dine in, know that this is a very unassuming restaurant in a strip mall tucked away in a quiet part of Brea. Expect paltry wall fixings, run of the mill chairs and basic square table. But, really, are you there for decor or food?! If you haven't tried this neighborhood gem, you are so missing out. The price range is reasonable and the food is exceptional!! You know the food is going to be good when the complimentary chips are FIRE. They gave chips and salsa, but it was the best chips and salsa I've had at any Mexican restaurant before. The chips were fresh and warm, and even by itself it tasted so good. Slow service, half-attentive waiters, mediocre food overpriced. Came in at noon on a Saturday, waited about 15 minutes for a table for two (which seems normal for a restaurant so we didn't mind). They don't have a hostess, just multiple servers addressing those waiting and maybe putting them on a list, lack of organization is a theme here. They had an extensive list of margaritas and other drinks I was interested in trying so I ordered the watermelon margarita. I asked for it blended and our waiter told us it would be "a few minutes" which I wouldn't expect a blended margarita to take just a few minutes but it took around 20-25 to receive it after the server told me they actually wouldn't be able to blend it, on the rocks only, which I was fine with but then a significant amount of time passed and I didn't even have the on-the-rocks margarita. Eventually, I heard a blender to which I hoped was them finally making my drink, which they were. When I finally received the blended margarita I had asked for I was relieved. It was good; included a chamoy stick which was a nice touch to the tajin rim, but it wasn't good enough to forget the fact that we had now been waiting around 30 minutes for our food and had already gone through the two small bowls of chips we were given while waiting. We actually finished the second bowl of chips before they brought the margarita. I ordered the steak fajitas, which granted will take longer than other entrees i'm sure, but by the time the actual steak fajitas came, the rice and beans it came with were lukewarm, if that since those were served prior to the steak arriving. The flour tortillas I received looked raw, not sure if that even makes sense but they looked more like rice paper but I was just happy to get my food so I scarfed them down since we were on a time crunch. Then I found that they had only given me two tortillas for an entire platter of steak fajitas and veggies. I hesitantly flagged down the waiter (again, not very attentive) and asked for corn tortillas hoping they wouldn't take another 20 minutes. But they didn't and were much better than the flour. Overall, this was an overpriced mess of a restaurant. The food was fine, but nothing worth coming back here for. Not to mention the annoying Mrs. Claus statue that plays loud music every time someone walks past it, which is constantly because it's next to the kitchens expo window. As a waiter myself, if I knew the price point of my restaurants menu, I would do as much as possible to make it seem somewhat worth it. read more

The salsa was also very watery but decent. I can see why they up the prices and alter the taste of the food to accommodate Brea residents. They're compromising the taste just to up the price. A tasty Mexican restaurant with extremely friendly service. It's definitely my favorite in the area. All of the diverse meat choices are *delicious* here, with good portions for the price. My favorite is the al pastor, which is redder and spicier than what I'm used to, and I love it. My partner always gets the lengua and the cabeza, which are some of the most flavorful, tender, and succulent meats I've had in a long time. They give you a choice between store bought and handmade tortillas for the tacos, and I wholeheartedly recommend springing for the fluffy handmade tortillas. Everything comes with a generous helping of fresh chips and both mild tomatillo and honestly pretty spicy red salsa, and they carry some of the less common Jarritos flavors (like guava and grapefruit). We've only ever gotten food to go, but it always comes out hot, quick (5-10 minutes), and with warm smiles all around. The inside is spacious and tastefully red everywhere, and feels very comfy. We ordered our food to go, and didn't get to eat it fresh. It's hard to judge the quality, but I'm defiantly going to go back and eat in person. I want to say my favorites would be the tacos because they do make the tortillas by hand so that's a huge plus. The burrito is also pretty flavorful because it combines everything altogether. We pivoted from a chain restaurant to here on a recommendation. Yeah for my friend. Five people for a late lunch. Two of us shared the fajita steak and shrimp. There was not a drop left and we were both stuffed. They served on a sizzling platter. Hand made tortillas. Chili Verde was delicious. Just mild enough. The wet bbq burrito disappeared also. Asada, chicken, or al pastor tacos were $1.50 each and 16oz containers of rice and beans were $4.50 each. They threw in a small bag of fresh chips and spicy green and red salsas which were all delicious. The chicken tacos were yummy, pastor was okay, but the asada was a little too salty for my taste. The rice was flavorful, but the beans were average. It's a great place to pick up decent Mexican fast food, but I wouldn't dine in because I enjoy having an adult beverage when at a restaurant, and no alcohol is served here. The service was stellar. This spot is quite off the beaten path but totally worth checking out! This place is in a small strip mall and doesn't look like much on the outside. Inside there is a small dining room with 3 TVs. It may seat about 25 people. I imagine wait times here can be long during peak times. The service is quick here! All the servers are working together checking in on everyone at every table. The food here is all homemade! Even the tortillas. Oh those tortillas. They were as fresh as could be, hot and thick too! The carne asada had a great marinade and the meat came out grilled all the way through. The guacamole and pico de Gallo are also very fresh! My entire dish was delicious! I thoroughly enjoyed it. We've been coming here occasionally for many years. I've loved their Carnitas and taco choices. I tried their Chicken Mole and it was fantastic. Their homemade Mole is great, probably the best I've tasted. It was really flavorful, spicy but not overpowering. Chicken was super tender. Their homemade beans were great as always. Hearty, warm to your tummy, comfort soup. Slight citrus flavor in the soup, perfectly seasoned, with the layers of flavors in the meatball. I really enjoyed this soup. Pozole. Slightly spicier. Pork pieces tender. Each mouthful with hominy, spice, pork, and the complex richness of the soup. I love everything about this soup. The location is not too far from the office and I have driven by pretty much every morning. I checked out their menu on Yelp and called in an order for the crispy taco plate. For the plate, you get 3 hard shell tacos with the choice being beef, chicken, carnitas, and potato. I asked for 2 beef and 1 potato. I go pick up and back to the office. The plate also comes with rice and beans and a little bag of tortilla chips. First of all, I typically do not eat beans but these beans on the tortilla chips was awesome. The tried the beef taco first and wow, the shredded beef had a great flavor, nice and juicy. Then I tried the potato taco, though it was good, I think it needs some salt. Then the last taco was another beef so yummy, yummy when it hit my tummy. They also have soft tacos and there is an option for homemade tortillas.
