I've been a customer of deans for 4 yrs and warren and Donna always took good care of my car and George is great. Recently I went in for a check engine light diagnosis and found out there is a new owner. When greeted by peter the new owner I smelled a foul stench like a dogs behind on a hot day, not a good first impression! I hung in there and told him my problem and he started telling me what he thought the problem was like an arragont a** hole before even looking at the car, not to mention he seems very unsure of what he's talking about. I decided to give him a shot and left my car and told him I needed a ride to work , when I got in the shuttle car there was terrible music blaring and again I smelled that musty dog a** again!! When I go to pick my car up the bill was $200 more than quoted !! I argue the charge and peter tells me I cannot leave till I pay , I just wanted the experience over with so I pay the bill and get in my car where it again smells like a dogs nasty a**!!!!! This guy is disgusting! I would never recommend anyone to deans again , I now trust another local shop with my car! read more

I've had another mechanic for about 10 years and generally was happy with the service -- well mostly. In retrospect, I often found myself chasing the place down to find out when my car would be ready. My two recent experiences at Dean's has made me realize I was settling for less than I should have with the other guy. George is always cheerful and a pleasure to talk to, as is Warren. I can't believe I'd ever say this about an auto repair place. I trust Dean's Automotive. Because of my previous experiences with other auto shops, I'm usually pretty skeptical and I have to do some research before I walk into any auto place. The great reviews brought me here at first. Been here 3 times for my 2014 corolla, they are always efficient, honest and kind. Besides the affordable price, you get great customer service from every staff! The folks at Dean's were super nice, very professional, and got the job done well. More importantly, they're actually mechanics that I can genuinely trust. During my last oil change at a dealer, I was asked to pay $700 to change a part in my car because it was leaking. I was suspicious of this, so I didn't give in. On my visit to Dean's, they didn't detect a problem during my oil change. When I then asked the mechanics to look into the problem identified by my previous mechanic, they told me that it wasn't actually a problem, and that I should be good until at least another 15k miles. I'm very grateful for the honesty at Dean's, and will always be coming back to them to service my car. read more

We were leaving for the snow on New Year's Day, so I stopped by at noon on New Year's Eve to see if they could take a quick look at my check engine light before we left. Even though George said they were swamped, short on staff, and they couldn't fit me in, they still put my car on the machine anyway. When they told me my tires were bald, my battery not fully holding a charge, and still an issue with my emissions system, my husband said we should just rent a car and have the car repaired later. George offered to call Hertz and get me the discounted shop rate and set me up for repair first thing Monday when we got back. My total charge? $0. This is what true customer service is. Same experience as the previous reviewer: being told I needed new brakes and then learning that there was 40-50% wear left on the pads. I'm not a mechanic nor car expert so will not call them outright dishonest since they may know something I don't. But caveat emptor is all I advise. Get a second opinion before any expensive work is done and don't get seduced by courtesy, politeness and seemingly good customer service on the surface. read more

We moved to the Bay Area from Boston in 1989, and we are still surprised by the unanticipated differences. We expected a lot of changes, but not things like terrible banking and great health care. Or the best auto mechanic. Dean's is simply the best we've seen, in Boston, Chicago, or the Bay Area, and we've been going to auto repair shops for a long, long time. They kept our '85 Corolla going long past any reasonable expectation, Our '00 Camry hasn't needed much work, but we take it here for regular maintenance instead of the dealer because we trust Dean's. When Warren tells us something needs doing, we do it, because its cheaper in the long run to keep things in trim. The measure of a good repair place, whether it's watches, computers, cars, or plumbing, is knowledge of the field, attention to detail, minimal collateral damage, and honesty. Dean's has been tops in all these areas. We've been going to them since about 1991 or '92, and we have never once thought of going anywhere else. It's not cheap, but the prices are fair and the work is first rate. read more

I know that the cars I have had serviced by them have lasted longer and run more reliably than they would have if I took them to other shops where nobody really cared about the Long Term relationship with me. I came into Dean's Automotive this morning to get repairs for some minor damage on my radiator. They must have seen that I'm a young woman with little knowledge of cars, because they pressured me into getting work done on both radiators, plus get my thermostat replaced. I ended up paying almost $500. A second opinion from our family's long-time mechanic told me I could have gotten my problems fixed for $60. I called to request that they reduce all of their recommended options and simply fix what was wrong with my car, but was told that it was too late. It's really my fault for not doing more research beforehand, but the problem seemed urgent to me at the time, and I foolishly trusted their staff to offer me a fair recommendation and a fair price. read more

Deans seemed like a very friendly shop, but that was before they gave me my bill. My check engine light had come on. Since I do not own a diagnostic computer to check the problem, I took it to this shop to find out what was wrong. The next day they called me and explained it was the EGR system and that they recommended that I replace the whole thing. I agreed to the price of $732.88 since it sounded like it would be highly complicated and big job. When I arrived to pick up my car, I looked at the bill and saw that I was charged $133.33 for the EGR valve which can easily be found for $50-80 at any autoparts store. Next, when I asked if he could show me the work that was done, he became extremely offended and argued that I was calling him a crook for simply asking to see what exactly was done. Although the service was prompt and is quality work, a minor repair/replacement that would range from $300-450 ended up costing $732.88. If you don't mind being ridiculously overcharged for parts/labor, Deans might just be your shop. read more

Never again will I use Dean's Automotive. I took in my decrepit Voyager not wanting to spend any more than I had to to get it running safely until I could find a more eco-friendly replacement. I knew that the brakes were bad from the analysis from the AAA guy, but Dean's charged me $69.42 for a brake inspection on top of the charges for replacing the front brakes (which I told them were bad). One thing led to another...and another...and another after three calls without giving me a revised total, when I got there to pay the bill, it was over $900.00 which, had I known it would have been that much, I would have sent it to the junk yard!!!! When I complained loudly about the $69.42 inspection, it was taken off my bill, but when I got in the van, the dash board lights were not functioning. They were fine when I took it in. So hours of waiting has led to more time wasted carting me back and forth because they did not catch this issue before they came to pick me up....so now that they know there is a problem with the dashboard lights, I sincerely hope they are not going to try to charge me for another $69.42 inspection fee. Sloppy and misleading are the two words I would use for Dean's Automotive...not to mention their office reeks of tobacco smoke. read more

Did a routine brake service there. ~$60 online basic 2 rotors and 4 pads were sold at 171.52+tax (for parts only). To spray these new parts with brake cleaner aerosol? $3.15 for materials. Labour at $175 seems excessive. I will probably look elsewhere for my next routine service. At $400 paid for rear pads+rotors and front pads, I might even consider doing this myself the next time. While I do want to support local nearby business, I can only give an "A-OK" rating overall, primarily based on the final cost. read more

This is review that is long overdue but must be added to the chorus. Dean's Automotive is outstanding. That is simply put, without emoticons, slang or exclamation marks. That is because it is true. First, everyone, including the cat, have treated me warmly and with courtesy. George, Warren and Donna are first rate business people. I've made three trips to Dean's, with a different problem each time. First, my brakes were in a dangerous condition- I had to pull the brake pedal up after stopping. This was an area I know nothing about and figured it would be a major hassle in terms of money paid and time lost. Not knowing what to expect, I arranged for a rental and expected the car back in four or five days. I had brought it in early in the morning, and got a phone call around lunch time as to the progress. It was George calling to tell me that since some additional parts were needed from the South Bay, the car wouldn't be ready until the next morning. I was stunned - George actually sounded disappointed that it wouldn't be done within the same day, and I was thinking closer to a week. As promised, the job was finished the next morning, the price was reasonable. Overheating sent me back for the second visit. Again, I'm thinking radiator, cooling system and $$$. A quick check indicated the problem was the thermostat. Again, Dean's diagnosed the problem and fixed it quickly and with reasonable prices. The third trip is one all car owners will have to make a some point- the major service. The car I have Mitsubishi Lancer has treated me fine, and I plan to hang on to it for a while. As it approached 75,000 miles, there were some serious service recommended to keep it going. Shocks and struts, timing belt, catalytic converter and various sensors would all have to be replaced. I talked it over with George beforehand. The great thing about him is that he'll listen to your suggestions, but he'll let you know there are other things to look at and other ways to diagnose what the car needs. One of these is a road test- common sense, right? I have dealt with mechanics who follow exactly what I believe the car needs, without them actually finding out if any of what blabbed about was necessary. The result ? A car that kind of works, but not at its optimal level. This major service was going to take some days this time. I even got a ride home form Warren. I really appreciated that I was informed by phone about what the original diagnostic showed and how to proceed next, with a timeline. After three days, George let me know the car was ready. He mentioned that Dean's guarantees their work for twice the length of other shops, with a sense of pride not just of the policy , but I suspect, the quality of the work done. The work is done quickly and correctly. The people are knowledgeable, friendly and have pride in their work. The prices are reasonable. Every experience increases the trust and lessens the stress. What more could you ask for? read more

I went in about an oil change. They checked the oil level and it was very low so they filled it up at no charge. I was so surprised and grateful as I hate doing even the simple car stuff. Unfortunately they could not work on my car because it is a I have a Natural Gas car. Here is a great example of true neighborhood service, they helped me out knowing that I cannot use their services. Clearly they are one automotive business that is there to help the consumer. I want to express my gratitude for the mechanics at Automotive. I had some issues with my brakes on a Toyota Corolla. I had taken my car into Toyota dealerships in the Bay Area to check the brakes. None of the dealerships could find any issue with my brakes. I was recommended to Dean's Automotive by a friend. The mechanics located the issue with my brakes (the rotors had not been machined when the brake pads were added) and fixed it for an affordable price. Dean's really helped me out recently. I purchased a used car that had the brake rotors less than 50%. After dealing with a thief of a used car salesman, it was completely refreshing to have George over at Dean's give me an honest answer and good insight into my cars issues. I've taken cars to numerous mechanics over my life, it's been hard to find ones that do honest work while not clearing out your wallet. With Dean's I now have found a reliable place I can always bring my car too. Lifesavers!!! I traveled 3 hrs away from home for a weekend conference Saturday - Sunday 8 am to 5 pm in Mountain View. I arrived at my hotel the night before. In the morning with 40 minutes to spare I left my hotel for the venue, Evolution Trainers. Leaving the hotel, I started my car to drive to the venue to learn my check engine light was on. I had only 6 miles to drive and the car appeared fine so I took the chance to arrive on time. Just after registering I went to the car to check the owners manual when I discovered Dean's Automotive directly across the street! They opened on a Saturday an hour later and I met Peter who put me at ease. I brought the car across the street he checked the car computer to learn it was a bad thermostat. He was able to get Mazda OEM parts delivered, the car was repaired, and I was able to pay and pick up the car during the seminars lunch break 3 hours later. Painless! There is no good time for a heart attack and now good time for car trouble but if it happens you can trust Owner Peter to get the job done efficiently and with integrity. I didn't have to tow the car and all was well for just over $200. Thank you Peter and your fine company for saving me and my car without a "hitch" and back on the road within hours. Having taken my car here several times for everything from oil changes to engine work I am never going back again! After having our radiator replaced, we were given back our car and the AC did not work. We called them back right away were told by George it was impossible that anything that had been worked on could have caused the problem, and that they hadn't touched anything connected to the AC. We brought the car back, George, who had said it was impossible that they caused the problem, looked at it and in 5 minutes was back with an apology. They had failed to reconnect the AC that they claimed they had never touched to begin with. Most recently we gave them another chance with our car. After a simple oil change the very next day our car was overheating!!! Having not had this problem before the service, we took it back in only to be told that we had a radiator fan not working. Needles to say they took no responsibility for it and wanted more than $400 to replace it! After calling around we found another reputable shop to fix the problem for more than $100 less... but it wound up being free when they found a disconnected wire that caused the problem! This was not the first time we had to take our car back to Deans Auto the day after they worked on it and we will not be taking it back again. read more
