My favorite place to shop for produce. Fresh produce, good prices, clean store.. what more can you ask for. Oh, I know, troll for their $1 produce packs located in the back of the store. They usually have random bags of produce that are very ripe. But hey, for $1, you can often find something you can eat that evening. Oooh, and one more find. Love Dean's! Been coming here for years. I live in San Francisco but make it to Deans weekly. Fresh produce. Great cheeses. Lovely jams, cookies, pastas, teas and treats both domestic and imported. Great hours and convenient if you cook a lot. Most things are reasonably priced. Only downfall, some imported goodies sell quickly. And sometimes you must wait a few weeks for another shipment to arrive. Stock up on your favorites! read more

Those times I remain in the office for lunch, joining the Underwriting Staff girls in the lunchroom, on ocasion, I am often chastised for the abundance of meat in my meals and the apparent absence of fruits and vegetables; to the point where the girls often (and thoughtfully) culinarily subside "moi" with slices of fruit or a nicely done bit of bok choy. My "defense" is that EVERY morning I have Trader Joe "high fiber cereal" mixed with "whole wheat squares," "Just The Clusters" those from Trader Joe's and lately a Costco flakes and nuts or sometimes "Special K," and I mix them all together, then dollop some low fat yogurt , 2% Mad Cow Disease Milk (kidding, kidding) AND fresh friggin' fruit. So there ... and often the papaya, bananas, blood oranges, olives, esoteric fruits, blackberries (most frequently for the morning cereal ritual) etc. Dean's has the best prices and for some reason, their fruits and veges seem fresher, sweeter, their Hawaiian papayas seem to ripen better than other places, (don't forget the fresh lime juice on that Hawaiian papaya) melons, vine ripened tomatoes, and like Angela L. says, great prices and less packaged produce. Green and green, huh? Green in green? I drive a green car. End of story. Dean's I'm going to 5 star because once they see you a few times, the cashiers are friendly and efficient. How often do you go to Safeway or Bank of America and it takes 3 people to do what one should be able to do and you have to wait around ... or was that Wal-green's? I gave up going to Safeway across the street for produce since I was introduced to this place by my mother-inlaw. Great selection of fruits, especially veggies, and breads. I think this is owned by a Mediterranean owner b/c there is also lots of mediterranean jars sold here. Nice staff and they always keep their shelves stocked. They even got mediterranean-like music going on in the background. What a great way to set a good mood on an early Saturday or Sunday morning as you browse through their produce! read more

Once upon a time, not too long ago, I found my freezer stocked with six, yes SIX, cartons of ice cream. I wish I could point the finger at Hubby but he had been out of town for several weeks at that point, and I really had no one to blame but myself. Me and and my six fat tubs of lard. BUT that's all in the past now, because I've discovered the fantastic little place called Dean's Produce. SO AWESOME! The freshest produce I've ever seen in a market - I mean, right up there with farmer's market quality, but without the inflated price tag. We're talking fresh organic berries at $1.99 a basket here folks. I couldn't believe it! This is definitely my happy discovery of the month! Needless to say, my fridge is now fully stocked with healthily gorgeous vegetables and six, yes SIX baskets of berries (strawberries... blueberries... raspberries... black berries... cherries... ooo more strawberries...) Dean's has great prices on fresh fruit and veggies. I also find myself filling my basket with stuff I definitely don't need.."oh look..italian nougat in 4 delicious flavors for $3.99 each..I NEED ALL 4". They have many different varieties of honey, weird cookies from Slovakia or thereabouts, flavored syrups for 4.99(which is almost half of what we normally pay for our soda making syrups), cheeses, salami, etc. I docked one star because they took out the olive bar. I asked someone working there and she said "oh it's back over there". Deans is not that big, it's not like I could have missed it. I thought I was going crazy trying to find it. You can't fool me Dean's. Bring back that olive bar, damn you. read more

I only spent $13 and got enough fruit and veggies to last me almost 2 weeks. The produce stayed fresh and was already clean! All the food looks good and fresh, unlike those days you walk into safeway and you can't get half the things on your list because it all looks a day away from rotting. I love Dean's, owned by Greek's - with all types of Mediterranean and middle eastern food. My only gripe is sometimes i notice that the produce i purchase here spoils quicker than from other places nearby, (Safeway and Trader Joes) I love getting the herring in olive oil and some onion and potatoes and having a mini Russian meal. Lots of great olive oil. A great place for food type gifts as well. read more

Cheap fresh produce - and I don't even have to drive all the way to Daly City or Chinatown. I was very impressed by the quality and prices of their produce. I bought a ton of fruit and veggies, including a 45 lb. box of juicing oranges! Extra points for having a variety of Greek treats. My go-to grocery store. They carry a lot of exotic fruits and vegetables that I can't find at Trader Joe's. Prices are pretty solid and I recently started browsing their selection of bakery items and nuts. Produce are usually pretty solid, but every now and then I come across some bad fruit. Check the berries carefully to make sure they aren't molding...Usually it's pretty good though and the staff is friendly. read more

A much better place to go for produce than Safeway or Lucky's. Although those places may have more variety, Dean's has harder-to-find fruits and vegetables, like passion fruit and guava, and everything is at a lower price. I always walk away surprised at how little my groceries cost. In addition to produce, they also carry dry goods, a wide variety of spices (seriously, almost any spice you'd want for dirt cheap prices--whole cardamon, dried hibiscus, fennel seeds, etc.), and certain Mediterranean/Middle Eastern/Asian goods. I like to get kalamata olives and feta cheese here for my salads. If they had meat, this would be my one-stop shop. read more

Deans is simply the best, we've been coming here for 5 years now since we moved to the bay area. The produce is the cheapest, freshest, and best you'll find in the area. They are simply amazing, and carry an awesome selection of fun food products from overseas. Deans is always great at exposing you to new produce that you've probably never even seen. Deans is the only market where you'll leave with bags full of groceries and only be spending $30-$40.... we love this place. read more

Unlike Trader Joe's, which wraps all of its produce in plastic (why do they do that?) and Safeway, which is just your typical supermarket, Dean's is a fresh, clean, local shop. Whatever's in season will be very cheap. It also has a great selection of Mediterranean products - tahini, flatbread, and lentils especially. Until reading these reviews, I was sure this place was cash only. It gets pretty crowded on weekends - the aisles are very narrow. read more

Good produce - Fair prices. Why pay more for sub-standard produce at the big chain stores? Yes, its small, cozy, tight... but you can find what you need and get out quickly. When I was a kid my parents would go to a grocery store similar to this one every Sunday. The first time I walked into this place I felt that same feeling. Small aisles, produce sitting outside, small business feel, inexpensive prices. If you're looking for produce to cook the same day don't miss out on the bargain boxes they have with produce that's slightly past it's prime. There's nothing wrong with it and they sell a couple of pounds worth for a buck a bag. I just bought a bag of a dozen limes for $1 and last week I got two pounds of cherry tomatoes that I roasted. (The bargain boxes are on the floor underneath the tomatoes.) They don't just sell produce, they also have different types of cheeses, cured meats, and a great bread section in the front. Their non-perishable aisles have imported pastas, beans, honey, cookies, even bags of spices. The staff is awesome too. I had my arms full of produce and was trying to open a plastic bag with one hand and one of the stock guys stopped what he was doing to not only open the bag for me, but hold it open while I put my produce in it and then tie it up and hand it to me with a smile. I discovered Dean's today as I killed time in Millbrae waiting to pick up a friend on BART. What a great find! I bought two white onions, 15 lychees, 10 roma tomatoes, 5 mangoes, 6 green zucchini, 2 red bell peppers, 7 limes and about 8 pluots for a grand total of just under $10. This was a lucky stop-off on my way to pick up a few things at Trader Joe's. I got three times as much yummy, fresh-looking and smelling produce for half the price. Now I am revelling in the joy even more as my fiancee is whipping up some veggie kebabs on our grill. If you live in the area and are in need of some fruits or veggies, stop by Dean's! read more

I have to echo the positive comments already made by many reviewers, and would like to add a couple of things: 1) Unlike grocery stores, they do not drench their produce in water, which only makes the produce weigh more & rot quickly . Kudos to Dean's for skipping this unnecessary & destructive process. 2) Although it is often crowded, they are now expanding, which should alleviate some of the crowding, & allow for an even more interesting selection. As many other reviewers stated, it's nice to support a family-owned business in this day of chain stores. The variety is always interesting, including bulk (serve yourself) olives that aren't as ridiculously priced as in the upscale groceries such as Whole Foods & Draeger's. I enjoy finding types of produce & groceries I've never tried before, & have rarely been disappointed when I take one of these products home. read more
