I used to love this place for so many reasons - nice authentic food, great ambience and almost no wait time. I've been here a few times before and I've always had great experiences. Not sure if pandemic has had an effect because they have changed the menu and now I don't see many vegetarian options and I was a bit disappointed by that. The ambience, wine and the zero wait times are still on point though so it's still worth it if you are a meat eater. Ideally, the move up Hall Street shouldn't have been a big deal. It's the same menu, it's arguably a better kitchen space, they've retained the staff: No issue, right? As my Italian-American family from back east can tell you, history and character mean a great deal to a legacy restaurant. Places that stay in their one space for decades take on a community and neighborhood's history. Generations of memory resides in wallpaper and lighting fixtures. Major events and pivotal life moments take place at long tables and booths. Tears are shed when those places close not because of the food, but because of what they meant as a third place: An unofficial family dining room. DeCarli seems to think that as long as it keeps the polenta fries, flatbreads and pastas, everything's going to be OK. Forget the old timbers and bricks of Watson Avenue and just order some tagliolini already, right? But it just doesn't work that way. The Hall Street Grill is dead, but it died in that sprawling, shaded space that everybody loved. DeCarli moved into a space that was a HomeTown Buffet, and it feels like it. That strip-mall interior could be AnyHighway U.S.A. and snatches the soul out of the original DeCarli's ambiance. The old Benson Hotel lighting that looked so at home on Watson now looks like an antique in an IKEA. There are three stars on this review because I still love the food and can't knock the menu or the preparation. But the two missing stars are what was lost: The stories, the history, the memory of comfortable rainy nights and good conversation in a cozy, homey space over steaming dishes of gnocchi. The DeCarli's name is still on the place, the menu's the same, but this isn't it. We've reached the point where the Mingo by the Max station looks more like the Northwest restaurant it's emulating than DeCarli does, which is a sad statement. The complaints about parking at the old location--where there was always parking two blocks away and where a train dropped you four blocks away--were borne of laziness and stubbornness. The gripes about the old landlord jacking up the rent are well-founded, since there'd be no thriving Watson, First or Broadway without the work DeCarli put in. But saying this strip mall shell is an ideal solution is an outright lie: This doesn't save DeCarli, it just provides it a pallbearer for its inevitable march to the grave. I gave it a shot, had my polenta fries and pizzetta and said my piece. But the DeCarli we loved is gone, and the HomeTown Buffet version is a poor substitute. Buona sera, old friend. read more

I tried to call twice during business hours, but their phone is set to a recording with no option to leave a voicemail. My husband and I had dinner there on Thursday evening for our anniversary. We had a very nice time. Service in the dinner room was very nice, food tasted great. However, I became very sick a few hours later. I was up all night from obvious food poisoning. My husband was fine, but I had 3 raw oysters and he did not. Since I became extremely sick I believed it was important to let you know so possibly no other customers would be exposed. Not pleased that there was no way to contact anyone there directly. read more

We came to Decarli for the first time last night and had an incredibly positive experience. We came in at 8:55 thinking it wasn't closed until 10 bc that's what Google told us. We would usually never consider dining that close to closing but the incredibly welcoming hostess encouraged us to come in as the dining room was still fairly busy. The waiter, the hostess and the support staff were all fantastic. Even more so the FOOD was incredible. We both had pasta and the mussels which were the best we'd ever had. I will start by saying this has been one of, if not my favorite, restaurant in the last 7 years. We have consistently picked Decarli to celebrate almost every occasion and several date nights have been spent in the bar for happy hour. Because of that, it pains me to write this review. I went to Decarli last weekend, we had a reservation for 6 of us. My friend and I have the same birthday so we decided on Decarli for our birthday dinner. The evening started fine, we were seated promptly and the server noticed that I was pregnant (33 weeks at the time) so she brought me a zero proof cocktail menu which was nice because not ever place has that. I ordered the tropical blast, and when I received it, it had alcohol in it. Thankfully I noticed on my second sip. My friend at the table mentioned that his Huckleberry Hound tasted like juice and was definitely zero proof. I tried getting the server's attention but couldn't get her attention until she eventually came back to take our order. When I mentioned the drink mix up to her, she didn't really react. Just said "okay" almost like she didn't believe me and I had to ask for another drink, which felt odd considering they just served a cocktail to a pregnant woman. I ordered just a plain tonic water with lime as I didn't really trust the "zero proof" cocktails. Nothing was offered to my friend that also had the improper drink. Not a replacement drink or anything. Again very odd-so he went drink less the rest of the evening. We received our 3 appetizers which were very good as always. No complaints there. We placed our dinner order and that took a while to come out but we could see they were busy. The food was very good! We had a little bit of everything at our table and everyone enjoyed their food. Another staff member came to deliver a drink to someone else at the table and the birthday girl opposite of me asked if they carried ranch and the staff member rudely said "nope" and walked away. No offer of what might go with her meal or anything. The table was shocked at the blunt rudeness, I have never experienced poor service at Decarli before and now this was two members of the staff making us feel uncomfortable. At the end of the evening the bill came and I noticed they still charged me for my "zero proof" cocktail AND the tonic water I ended up with and they charged my friend for his cocktail that he never received. When the server came back I pointed it out to her and she hesitated for a moment and said "I can take it off" and snatched the bill and walked away. She returned (having charged my card the $360 for our meal) and she only took off the mocktail but not my friend's huckleberry hound. We decided it wasn't worth the fight and we had already been there for 2.5 hours because the service was slow so we left. I just felt really gross about the whole experience. There wasn't really any apology about the mix up, no management came to say anything and I know they were aware because I saw the manager removing my mocktail off our bill. I was just super sad to have been treated like that after being a loyal customer for many years. We even made sure to support them through COVID because we know how much small businesses struggled and we didn't want to see Decarli close. The icing on the top of the cake of why we will likely not be back, or at least for a while, is that I wrote this same review to Decarli privately in hopes that they would reach out and take SOME responsibility for the evening we had. I really don't need anything from them, I don't need the $12 back for my friend's cocktail or a comped bill. I truly just wanted to feel heard and valued as a customer. I haven't heard anything from them and I'm just super disappointed. What once was my favorite place is a place I will likely avoid going forward. I hope they can train their people better, because the service used to be impeccable. I will miss the polenta fries and the short ribs but it truly isn't worth going back there to feel like a burden to the staff. read more

Wow! We took a party of 12 to Dicarli for a family birthday dinner and had a wonderful time. The service was good. We ordered the charcuterie board, olives, bread and butter, tagliatelle, short ribs, a pasta dish with boar in it (Cavatelli?), steak, polenta, pizza, several different salads and cocktails. Almost every bite was eaten. I think some of the group would have licked their plates if that was considered acceptable. The cocktails were well made. My Cosmo was really good. The whiskey mule, one of their signature drinks, was a perfect pairing of whiskey and ginger beer. I don't like mules but will order that when we go back. One complaint was that the charcuterie board didn't have any cheese and the boar was a little tough. Um, it's boar. The olives were the absolute best. That was one of the most delicious meals I've had in the Portland area. read more

We had been going to the original location since they opened in 2007 and this was our first visit to the new location. The Good Parking, new location is now in a strip mall versus a neighborhood and there is ample parking . Our party had a reservation and we were seated right away. Most of the "old" menu came to the new location with our favorites of the short ribs, Papardelle, Cavatelli, and Gelato selections The "may have been an off night for the server" aka Bad 1. I inquired about subbing Anejo Tequila for the Silver in the Blood Orange Margarita. Server said that the Tequila is already in the mix and could not be subbed out. . Also stated that it would make the cocktail less spicy. Is the bar now premixing the cocktails and just pouring into the glass? The three Manhattans also appeared VERY quickly, and my table mate made that comment...server said that there was a lull at the bar - the place was full. My bad on not "understanding" that we were talking about two different Margaritas. My drink arrived and something was not "right". I drank about 1/4 and then just stopped since it didn't taste right. Told the server it wasn't what I expected and to take it away. When we got the bill it as actually a MANGO margarita. That's why it didn't taste like a BLOOD ORANGE margarita. Considering that the drinks main alcohol was discussed prior to the order, and my hesitance of actually ordering the drink (it was my go to cocktail for years at the old location), sending it back 3/4 unfinished, we were surprised it was on the bill. 2. Selected the Duckhorn Parradeux for our wine. Server came back informed us that the last bottle of Duckhorn Merlot was sold Saturday night. Um ok .... that's not what we ordered and pointed to the Can Sauv Parradeux by Duckhorn on the menu. Was told again that the Merlot was not available. we weren't asking for the Merlot. Server went to double check for the Parradeux and voila, she found one. 3. Requested bread when placing our Starter Order, then requested again when soup and salad came out, requested when main meals came out. Never received any bread‍ 4. Table near us came in way after us. We had placed our order and the soup and salad came out. Table near us had starters, Main, and dessert being delivered before our entrees came out. Server apologized and said that the other tables order went in before ours....they had no idea how their order was in front of ours. Had about 45 minutes between finishing soup/salad and main meal arriving. Food was great, cocktails seem to be pre-mixed, server not understanding why we questioned certain things. Cute restaurant, especially for being in a little strip mall. Better than expected. The octopus appetizer was the best thing we had out of everything. We were bummed about their spaghetti meatballs. Sauce tasted like it's out of a can. Wasn't good at all and it was too heavily sauced. The short ribs are apparently what they're known for and in our opinion it wasn't anything phenomenal. Too rich and sweet in flavor, needed something to cut thru the sauce reduction... I guess I prefer a wine/tomato flavoring instead of their sauce. The pizza was good and service was good. Amazing experience at Decarli. Service: It was a celebration for my wife who graduated. 4 different staff members came over to congratulate her separately, very special. Food: we ordered the bruschetta appetizer, Short rib entree, and Cavatelli, all delicious. The short rib is their specialty and one of the best short rib dinners I've ever had. Deep intense flavors with perfect cooked meat. The Cavatelli was a hit as well. This was our first time and we'll definitely be going back. read more

Upscale ambience with mediocre food. The best things I had were the ceaser salad and the putin fries, neither were amazing. I got the chicken for the entree and the taste was close inedible. The mash underneath the chicken was the best part of the dish. They require $100 deposit for reservations (insane!). I used to go to their other location quite a bit. We met Jana and Paul many years ago through friends who took us to their bold and brave move into old historic financial district of Downtown Beaverton. They not only built a legacy restaurant, they built and revitalized a Downtown. With black truffles and duck prosciutto. This was our first time to their new space. In a strip mall. In a prior Hometown Buffet. I don't get it. It's loud. LOUD. It's a warehouse/barn atmosphere. It's a Hometown Buffet. In a strip mall. My 85th BDay Dad couldn't hear anything we said. Looking at the space, this wasn't unexpected. It's enormous and devoid of any intimacy or standard restaurant techniques to address the noise. It's like walking into a Landry's concept in any other strip mall in any other sterile suburb. It's the opposite of Decarli. Is the food even good anymore? It seemed to be a slightly elevated concept of their prior meals scaled to a big gulp size for the space. I'd prefer Mingo's right down the street where even the Beaverton Round has more character. I just don't get this move. There is no revitalizing this strip mall, it has none of the promise that downtown Beaverton offered. The space has none of the charm that launched this legacy. We really do hope they continue their success but just wish we understood this move better. Lease rates went up? Economics after a pandemic made sense to scale up instead of sell out? We loved Bugattis for the times it fit our needs as a family friendly strip mall joint run by locals. I guess we need to frame this similarly. read more

We were due for a date night and Italian sounded great! We realized we hadn't been to Decarli at their new location so we headed that way. We were greeted right away, the new location has much more space and was very nice inside! We both decided to try something new, (after our must have polenta fries appetizer of course!!!). My husband had a mushroom pizza and I had the cavatelli. Both were delicious!! We also split a caesar salad which was outstanding. The service was outstanding, the beer selection is very good and they have some great cocktails. We will definitely be back read more

Decarli has been one of my favorites for years however I really did not like their new location. It had been a Hometown Buffett in a Beaverton strip mall and it still feels like a Hometown Buffett...in a strip mall. It is a large WIDE open space, so no intimacy and very loud. We sat at a booth which I think was better than one of the tables in the middle of the room but it was clearly a booth from Hometown Buffett and I could hardly hear across the table. The food was still delicious but that is not enough to get me back. Eating out at a nice restaurant these days is very expensive and I want the whole experience. They mentioned they wanted to be able to do volume and accommodate large parties such as high school football team dinners, well that is one direction, not my direction. I am sad to say I will not be returning. read more

Food was excellent. It was every bit as good as that of the old restaurant location. The new location had no affect on the taste of food. I Hated the new location. It is in a strip mall vs a really nice 100 year old building. I can tolerate the outside but not the instead. You sit in a very large room. It is like a cafeteria or hotel ballroom. There is nothing intimate or romantic. It is noisy. My two favorite restaurants in Beaverton have been Decarli and Mingos. I leaned slightly to Decarli when they were in the old location. Now it is clearly Mingos. The two restaurants are a few hundred feet apart. read more

I've been here twice since they moved and cannot recommend it enough. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and the food is excellent. I had the ragu both times, one was lamb and the other was wild boar. OMG my mouth was so happy! There is a hunger I have for a fried starch that I have not found in potatoes, toasted rice, bread, arepa till now. I can get addicted to these polenta fries. They are very rich though. This place has an atmosphere that is casual and yet you feel special in it. The waiting staff glides in and out in casuals but you would think by the attention they gave each patron they were all dressed in formals. Definitely a good place for a night out. It was a longtime interest to visit the new location- significantly larger than the old. We arrived at 4:58 and with 1 party ahead of us, waited to be seated when they opened at 5pm. With an empty dining room, we were seated in the far back right corner next to the server's station, where the clanging of silverware would be heard loudly as staff would fetch in a hurry (and did in that moment). Before sitting I asked the lady if we could be seated away from the station and she led us to the opposite corner near the window to an old wooden chair that looked like a place to sit for detention or some form of punishment. When I redirected her to consider another option, she seated us next to the first party that was along the main wall, then abruptly took 3 of the 4 table settings despite there being 2 of us. I have never felt so disregarded and the worst is that my daughter understood and felt the same. When a server came to fill out water glasses minutes later, I requested an additional plate as the lady took 3 of the 4. Once he brought it, we were not given any attention, and the restaurant was near empty. This was the WORST experience in customer service at what was supposed to be a special evening- a last dinner out before the new year. As much as we are conscious of being people of color, it was glaring how we were made to feel othered due to choices from the host- her bias and reluctant actions to seat us, smirk if we were or weren't satisfied was difficult to overlook and comprehend. My daughter and I discussed our experience and chose to leave, and no one appeared to care. Don't worry- it's mutual- we will not be back and we will ensure our friends know to be aware. We don't eat meat, so I was thrilled to De Carli had space for my family on Thanksgiving. I was told a few weeks later that they were actually not open on Thanksgiving. Made a new reservation at Oak and Olive, only to be told the same thing ON Thanksgiving at 3:30 pm! My husband and I were excited to check out the new location. Our initial impression was that it was very dark. Dark floors, dark walls, dark ceilings, and furniture. They brought over the antique brass fixtures but they didn't give enough light. Eventually our eyes adjusted but we still thought it was too dark (even the large pictures are black). I had the salmon and it was good, although I didn't notice on the menu, but it came with a huge pile of raw sprouts on top (I hate sprouts). Hubby ordered the brick chicken and he said it was good. The Caesar salad was good but it had a touch too much lemon. We got the salad before our drinks, which oddly took a while. When the check came we told the waitress that it would have been nice to have had bread - didn't bread come with the dinner, after all this is an Italian place. She said, "Oh, we have bread, you just have to ask for it". So, all summed up, this was a bit disappointing. They need to do a better job of making this place feel a little more charming...it felt like a Home Town Buffet painted black. read more
