My first time at DeckHand but not my last, it reminds me of Louisiana. The atmospher and service is very good. The food is very good too. The Diablo Shrimp appetizer was so good and has just the right amount of spice, the grilled onions are a nice touch. I had the Deckhand garlic shrimp, it was delicious, especially the garlicky Asian sauce. my husband had the Deckhand Sea Platter, it came with 6 huge butterfly shrimp, crispy oyster, tons of fries and hush puppies! I literally cannot stop raving about this crawfish boil. I have a questionable addiction to crawfish and during season, I will eat crawfish 3 times a week on numerous occasions. I have my typical spots, but someone told me to try deckhands. I'm always skeptical about places as first but this was out of this world. I typically don't like a saucy boil, I usually prefer dry spice because I don't like messy food, but these were the best crawfish I've ever had. Better than boils straight from Louisiana natives. I've never had juicier crawfish, AND unlike a lot of places, I truly feel like it was a true two pounds of crawfish, bot crawfish AND the sides. Not to mention, they are NOT skimpy on their sides. Very loud environment. More of a club than a restaurant. Food was pretty good, ordered about a dozen and half cooked oysters, and they were pretty good, it was also my first time eating cooked oysters. What I didn't expect was how loud it was. There was a birthday happening, and while most people normally give a birthday song with loud noises, here this went on for about an hour before we eventually left. Everyone at the bar seemed to be enjoying it, but it wasn't very welcoming for people coming in and expecting a family dinner. Lots of adult dancing, grinding, adult language, but it was near Christmas time and there was a birthday so. I've been to the South location multiple times and this was my first time dining at the North location. The service was great. My group (9 total) of us showed up around dinner time on a Saturday and was seated within 15 mins. The wait staff was also super attentive and we were able to get our orders in at a decent time. When it came to the food, definitely make sure you order oysters on the half shell and drown it in the house sauce that they have. They were juicy and delicious! Other standouts were the shrimp pad thai, salt and pepper calamari, and tom yum soup. I would definitely come back here - especially when the crawfish are in season! read more

Something about this place just don't hit the same anymore. The papaya salad used to have uniqueness to it but now the recipe feels like it's off. I've been a few times hoping every time the papaya salad will be like how I remembered but it never came back. Oysters were decent. I'm a big fan of quality, Gulf Coast seafood. I'm also a fan of flavorful heat. While I'm at it, I'm a fan of a reasonably priced beer to wash down the aforementioned, spicy Gulf Coast seafood. Deckhand scores on all three counts. There is plenty of space inside and it didn't feel crowded even when I arrived and was told it was about a 20 minute wait. No prob since my dinner partner was still stuck in traffic. I sat at the bar, ordered a great beer from Thailand I'd never tried before ($3.25) and before I'd poured it into the frosty mug the server said, "We have a table now if you'd rather wait there." Done. I ordered the popcorn shrimp while I waited. The batter was great on the very tender shrimp -- but I'm telling you right now, THE COCKTAIL SAUCE, you could put it on a pick-up truck bumper and you would eat it. Something gives it just a little extra kick and it is incredible. Despite the crowd the app came out quickly and my dining partner joined me before I devoured it all, That set the table for the rest of the meal; Bacon wrapped jalapenos (absolutely delicious -- you might want to get some tartar sauce to even out the grilled jalapeno heat), Deckhand Oysters (broiled, garlicy and delicious) and the amazing crawfish etoufee. I consider this style of etoufee Cajun, a darker style, no tomatoes with LOTS of flavorful heat. Initially you'll get that sweaty brow and say "whoa!" from the heat but let the flavor take over. The filé is earthy and savory and the crawfish (you will have some in every spoonful) is still sweet and tender. OMG, I've had tons of etoufee while living in New Orleans, but this is one of two places I'd say "Go here for etoufee!" Good stuff!!! read more

Service was very friendly and attentive, sadly that was the only great part of our experience. It was packed in there, tons of families and it looked like everyone was having a great time. My issue comes with the quality of food- not great. Cooked oysters smelled terrible and the flavors were really strange, I've had BBQ oysters tons of times and this was just not cutting it at all. Clam strips and fries tasted like it's been cooked in reused oil not clean oil, it had a weird filmy and dirty aftertaste - I might be wrong but that was the flavor I was getting. I also don't know how you get fries to look the right color but taste hard as a rock, that was new. Overall, hard pass and won't be back. I seriously question the palate of Austinites sometimes bc this was just mind blowing how packed it was in there for low quality food. read more

This was our first time at the Deckhand in Round Rock and we really wanted to like it. The menu is quite interesting... Part Thai. Part Seafood. The dishes appeal to my tastes. However, the food just doesn't get a chance to shine here because the atmosphere is terrible. So many things are bad, but first and foremost is the noise level!! It is WAY too noisy in here. The music is played way too loud. The sound of people talking at the bar is so loud that you literally have to shout to hear the person sitting next to you. There are these ship bells that people like to ring and that is startling. We even sat in the side private room to try to escape the noise, but no luck. The chairs are horribly uncomfortable. There was a draft in the room that made it uncomfortable. Even our server rolled her eyes when we complained about the noise. She understood our viewpoint. She agreed! We will not be back. The food was OK. Not great. Under seasoned etouffe. Odd tasting rice. We couldn't even focus on the food because the atmosphere on a Friday evening was horrible. read more

I am a big fan of deckhand. Usually I go for their Laos menu in which everything is pretty awesome. One of my favorites is the Moo-Ping, which is like a BBQ skewer. It is so flavorful and juicy, it comes with vegetables to wrap your meat in and a sweet slightly spicy sauce for dipping. I also enjoy their Tom Yum soup, it can get spicy so my recommendation is to choose a low spice level if you don't enjoy spicy food. The seafood in this soup is delicious. Papaya salad is also a really great dish to try. Same thing on the spice level. Pickup during covid-19 was pretty easy. They have a drive thru window that they use to hand you your order and also take your payment. I'm so grateful that this restaurant is still doing amazing things during these tough times. Live crawfish season! One of our favorites for live crawfish. We like the extra spicy sauce, and it is spicy, but not too over the top spicy; the sauce is a perfect blend of garlic butter. You can get them by the pound and add on corn, potatoes, or sausages in addition. We also got a couple dozen gulf oysters in addition, which came with cocktail sauce, horseradish, and lemon. They do not do reservations here, so it's first come first served. Even with arriving around 5PM on a Friday, there was still a 40+ minute wait for tables, so be sure to plan accordingly. Slow, food was awful!! I should've paid attention to the other bad reviews!! The place was packed and I was patient, we went for lunch, sat in the patio that had an awning but didn't provide shade. It was hot! Then waited forever to order, server was nice, his first day! Ordered Po Boy and crawfish and two beers. Beers were good and cold! Only thing positive I can say about this experience. Po Boy arrived by itself and it had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time all the condiments were congealed lettuce was wilted and fries were cold. We sent it back and asked about the crawfish and were told food comes out when it's done. Second Po Boy comes out much better we share it....still no crawfish....once we finish the sandwich we finally say I guess we'll skip the crawfish and just take the bill.....2 hour lunch!! I'd been to this place several times at it's older location. I don't know what happened to it but it's a complete disappointment now. First, we ordered their salt and pepper calamari. It was way overcooked and dry. Both of us also ordered variations of their fish plates. I got blacked catfish and my wife got blackened tilapia. Both dishes were almost unedible. The fish (both) were basically mushy and tasteless. This was strange since they were supposed to be blackened. Their rice was overcooked and chewy. Their veggies were obviously out of a can and the complete opposite of fresh. I am not trying to be hyperbolic but it was one of the worse seafood restaurant experiences I have ever had. I've been to the Deck Hand out south and was impressed by their boil. Came to try the north location and again, impressed. But this time, it was ambience, food and service. I was in the mood for some oysters. Deck Hand did not disappoint. So damn good! No smallies. Tasty! Cold beer! It hit the spot. First, I was a little confused by the old school Tejano music playing over the speakers. Mind you, not very many "Tejanos" in the restaurant, but the others didn't seem to mind. Stopped in for a late lunch. The patio was not opened for dining so we ate inside near the bar. The music was way too loud and the waiter said the bar speakers were broken so sound was loud in dining area so the bar area could hear the music. Very annoying! We shared the frog legs, shrimp satay & a cup of Gumbo. The Gumbo was delicious, but frog legs were overcooked and we did not like the batter. The shrimp dish was ok, but the peanut butter sauce did not go well with the shrimp or cucumber salad. I would not order either one of those entrees again. Waitress was nice, but service was slow. Where to begin. Let's start with the drinks. Please don't advertise having Coke products and then bring some off brand drink to the table. You never know what a person is allergic to and advertising one thing but bring something completely different out, is not where it's at. Husband asked for a sprite.... He gets "Lemon-Up" He described it as tasting like bubbly lemonade. I got a beer so there's nothing to complain about there. Second. Please don't advertise clam strips on the menu and then have my server tell me when I try to order them, "What's that? That's on the menu? We don't even sell those. I don't know what those are." Either update the menu, train your staff a little better or maybe even a little bit of both. Third. And this is what really sold me not to come back. I wanted king crab legs. When requested, was told they were out. That's fine. But to have your server tell me that I don't want them any way because they are $30 a lb and then to have her say that it's a little expensive? I wanted them, if y'all had them, I would have gotten them. But you didn't and she tried to talk me out of ordering crab legs all together. I ordered the snow crab legs instead and she then questioned me, "Are you sure? Those are a little pricey too." Please don't try to change my mind. I just wish she would have taken my order and just been okay with it. Fourth! I've done my fair share in the restaurant business. I've never worked in a place that has had "more than one kitchen". I know there's a fry side and a wet side.... Please don't tell me that our food is going to come out at different times because you have several different kitchens back there cooking our food. I got the snow crab and my husband got a fried shrimp plate.... It shouldn't take my crab legs 45 minutes to cook. My whole family was done with their meals by the time I got mine which then in turn made them wait for me to finish. Fifth! Oh my goodness. FIFTH!!!! The music..... it wasn't a bad choice. I loved the music selection. But my complaint is, THE VOLUME. I had to request that the volume be turned down THREE separate times because my infant was sleep. There were other infants in the restaurant other than mine. And when I say the music was loud..... that's an understatement. There is nothing on the walls to dampen the sound. No rugs or mats in the floor. NOTHING. When I say my ears were ringing, and I'm not talking about Tinnitus, (Been down that road. Thanks a lot military) but the music was so loud, I had to yell to talk to my parents who were sitting next to me. It was atrocious. Got extra oyster NO SHRIMP. Went back inside to tell them, the greeter acted as if she didn't see me and tried to avoid me. They finally took the plate to back, then the manager brought the plate back to front discussing with the waiter as if I was wrong. THEY WERE TALKING OVER MY PLATE WHILE IT WAS OPEN AND POINTING AT MY FOOD. At that point I was disgusted and requested a refund. Got more attitude from waitress. We ordered shrimp Diablo and spring rolls for apps. Got the shrimp Diablo appetizer after our entree was delivered. They tasted and appeared to have been made at least day before and were barely warm by the time they got to our table so not sure why it took so long. Bacon and shrimp were tough. Gumbo was ok and it too was barely warm. The mango sweet rice was tasty. This was Sunday morning so may go back to give lunch a try and see if those are better prepared.
