My friends and I were happy to be patrons at this institution during COVID-19. We support local businesses and were patrons at the lunch hour, ordering several appetizers, entrees, and drinks. We came back for dinner as our service at lunch was exceptional and were unfortunately met by an employee (with his mask fully pulled down below his chin) who announced that we could dine at this institution but could not order any drinks, as he subjectively determined that we were too inebriated to purchase drinks at "his" institution. When pushed further to declare what his official capacity was, he could not elaborate further. When our African American colleague confronted him, as we were obviously not incapacitated in any manner and were not actively drinking any alcohol on the premises, he said that he was the sole decision maker of this institution and needed to "maintain its safety". Keep in mind, there was no indication that anyone in our party was unable to act in a reasonable capacity. He said that his decree was not discriminatory but rather the "law of Santa Fe". However, he readily allowed patrons of other races and various states of intoxication to enter the premises. I have never written a review for an establishment and am ashamed that this is the instance in which it is necessary, but I implore other patrons to visit other institutions for both better cuisine and superior humanism. read more

We are here on vaykay from California! I was born in Santa Fe, and come to SF at least 4 times a year. But I've never been here. This was a pleasant surprise for me! The food was absolutely delicious! I had the green Chile cheese hamburger! That was the best hamburger I've ever had! My husband had the wings, my aunt had the salmon salad and my uncle had the enchilada plate! We were all very happy with our choices! But the Larry the waiter was exceptional!! He was very cordial, friendly and the service was quick! We stayed a little longer after we ate our food and we didn't feel pressured to leave. Oh and we landed up ordering desert! Great food and priced right! They have a daily special and their Stuffed Green Chile Cheese Burger is one of a kind! House margarita is pretty good for the price and the feel of the Saloon takes me back to being in Mexico City. Friendly staff and I've met some wonderful locals who go there almost daily. Del Charro(DC) has consistently been my go-to place to eat and enjoy tasty cocktails while in Santa Fe. It's always been my first suggestion for family and friends who visit Santa Fe. However, my experience last night was far from acceptable. I met a good friend of mine (a frequent guest at DC, actually) here last night around 430pm to celebrate my recent career change. She was seated at a two-person table in one of the atrium-like rooms with a beautiful fireplace. When I visit DC, I usually am able to sit in the bar area as it has more of a relaxing ambiance. She had requested if we could be seated in there once a table opens up. We were happy to close out our current tab in order to start a tab with a new server in the bar. While we sat at our table, we noticed two different instances in which people were allowed to switch tables. One group was allowed to move into the bar and the other person was allowed to move to a table near the fireplace in the same room in which we were all seated. Meanwhile, we kept noticing tables that opened up in the bar were immediately filled with guests that came in after us. I decided to ask the hostess myself and politely explained my request. The hostess (I was not able to get her name) then started asking other people if my request could be fulfilled which resulted in her bringing the night shift manager (Trinidad) into the conversation. Trinidad said that they were not able to move guests as that was their COVID protocol, which is completely understandable. We understood and appreciated the fact that tables were being sanitized completely and proper distancing measures were being followed. However, I mentioned that a group was allowed to move from one room to the other in addition to the woman who was able to move tables in the same room. Trinidad then claimed that he was not the person that made those decisions and he was not prone to giving exceptions BUT he would be willing to allow us to sit in the bar in this instance. However, he informed us that we would only have TEN MINUTES left of our visit, again according to their COVID protocol. I looked around the room and pointed out the different tables that were seated before my arrival, including the group that was allowed to move into the bar, that were there for at least an hour. I asked Trinidad if he would be asking those tables to leave as well. Trinidad then said while he wasn't keeping exact timing on all tables, he KNEW we were there for almost an hour therefore, if we did move to the bar, we would only have about ten minutes left before we had to leave. My friend and I asked why we were basically being singled out as the table for which Trinidad chose to enforce DC's COVID protocol as this was blatantly apparent. At this point we had ordered one cocktail a piece and were planning on ordering and enjoying dinner in the establishment. Our server was great and we were enjoying ourselves. We were not rude to the hostess in our requests to simply be moved into a different room and expressed that we were fine waiting for a table to open up, we just wanted to be put on the list. I simply wanted to know why certain people were accommodated while others were told they were on a time limit. Our bad experience resulted in Trinidad comping our cocktails. We ordered one more round so that we would be able to generously tip our awesome server. We finished our drinks and headed to Cowgirl BBQ for dinner where our experience was far better than DC's. At this point, my friend and I have both decided to stop patronizing DC as this encounter was unnecessary and eye-opening. COVID protocols exist for a good reason and we appreciate the efforts that the DC staff makes in order to ensure the safety of its guests. However, management should not disregard their establishment's protocol in favor of only certain guests. It makes for a rather unpleasant dining experience beset with exclusionary undertones. read more

$6 dolla margaritas - gotta love 'em. Del Charro also has $5 daily specials, which is awesome as Santa Fe can sometimes be difficult to find a good bargain in. The $5 blue corn enchiladas are good, as is the burger, and of course, the house margaritas are fantastic. The limes are soaked in tequila - so be sure to squeeze. Service on the patio can be sketchy, but inside it's pretty good. I try to get the pimp daddy area in front of the fireplace. Did I mention the margaritas? read more

What a lovely way to pass an evening- margaritas and nachos (we finished one plate and ordered up another, they were that delicious!) Sit at the bar, a high top table or a little 4 top in the saloon area or go back through to the dining room- you'll have great service and happy faces to look at. The servers have great attitudes and are on point- waters, drinks, clearing plates- they were on hand yet not in the way. The bartender knows how to make tasty drinks even tastier- and my marg on the rocks w/salt came with the shaker for do-it-yourself refills at the table & at my leisure. Huge and kind of crowded, Del Charro nonetheless has a relaxed and fun vibe, incredibly cheap beer and even cheaper but still solid bar food. Basically, everything here is pleasantly adequate, but if you want to drink an entire shaker of margaritas for five bucks, Del Charro is definitely worth surrounding yourself with St. John's students for. Also it goes on the Law & Order Sightings Map. I saw a director having drinks with two ex-roommates for reasons I cannot even begin to fathom. read more

Hmm, after reading the rest of the reviews, I wonder if I just get luckier at most establishments, or if I'm simply nicer to the staff and hence never seem to get the bad service? anyways, possibly arriving at 2pm when it's dead empty on a tues helped....in my cycling clothes...chilly and tired from riding up from Abq (75mi & 5000ft of climbing, if you're counting)....and me & my buddy brought our bikes inside. They didn't mind, we piled a couple extra logs on the fire and began to "warm up" with a couple of beers while we waited for the 'burgs. service was prompt, despite the staff being occupied with afternoon side work. Smart man am I, as I ordered those beer battered fries. hello, who's your daddy? obviously I am, since I devoured them in less than two min....on to the burger. Ordered it with green chile, bacon, & pepper jack, whole thing was still less than $10, that's not shabby in my book, especially two blocks off the plaza. Came exactly as ordered, and it sure hit the spot. I debated ordering another one, but then calculated that, with the ranch on my fries, I'd consumed about 3200 of the 4000 calories we'd burned riding up there....and I'd better save it for dessert after we got home. However, the ambience is nice and the location is perfect. Most importantly, my hamburger was cooked perfectly. However, it wasn't so pleasant coming back up (and out) on the side of the road the next day. Overall, I left pieces of my Del Charro meal in: Springer, NM (twice) Gladstone, NM Clayton, NM Boise City, OK Hugoton, KS ...and a few places far from civilization in between. Disappointing from Beginning to end I've not been back Santa Fe in years. We went to Del Charro for lunch. We were sitting outside on a lovely Sunday afternoon, (Post lunch rush). The waitress took forever to take our order. Drinks were then given to the wrong people. 3 people in my party ordered burgers done medium rare, medium and medium well. None of our burgers were cooked correctly. We had to ask for refills which were also done incorrectly. We were never asked how the food came out. Sadly Del Charro isn't the great place it was. Not impressed. We were recommended this place by out server at another restaurant. He said it was great place to grab a drink and good place for kids. This was not the case. We walked in at 4:45 in dire need of a beverage and a nice place to sit for a minute with our two kids. There were other kids in the bar area but we were told we could sit out in the patio that was bright and sunny. That they would lose their liquor license if my family and I sat down in the bar. I was SO HAPPY when we found Del Charro when we rolled into Santa Fe around 11 PM; this does not seem to be a late night town, and I was happy to have a decent place to grab drinks and a hamburger before the next day of our cross-country journey. The green chile chowder was tasty; my hamburger was OK. It actually ended up being kinda overcooked, which annoyed me at the time, but now I am grateful for the screw-up. My husband's hamburger was a nice juicy medium rare and he enjoyed it immensely. We had some tasty chips and salsa, too. A few service hiccups, ok, but overall it was a solid three-star experience until the next morning when my husband was hit with a massive case of food poisoning which caused him to vomit his way across New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. I should preface by saying that I'm a regular at Del Charro Saloon, so my review might be a little on the preferential side and not totally unbiased. Food is great and well priced. This is great in Santa Fe where food and drink prices are ridiculous. They also have a great wine list for a reasonable price and their house margaritas are great. It does get really crowded during tourist season, so get there early if you want a table or a place to sit. I love all of the bartenders. Great people. Friendly and remember you when you come in. I would consider this a place for locals. Not touristy, but can be due to being attached to a hotel and location. Del Charro is one of my most frequent haunts, but it is also one of the most inconsistent restaurant/bars I have ever visited. As the full-time designated driver of my group, I have not had much experience with their adult beverages (though my girlfriend does sing the praises of their ludicrously cheap margaritas, served Fuddruckers-milkshake style), but I have sampled a very large portion of their menu (I am paid in food for my babysitting services). The secret weapon of this restaurant: The beer-battered fries. They cost a bit more ($0.75, at last visit), but they kick the puny, under-seasoned regular fries to the curb. Get some of their (I'm assuming house-made) ranch to go with it, and it makes for a nice, cheap plate of pass-around food. Everything else varies wildly, I'm afraid. THE FOOD: I've had their Green Chili Chicken Corn Chowder a number of times, and it ranges from god-nectar deliciousness to goopy, inedible wallpaper paste. The kitchen seems to have a lack of ability to handle crowds--the busier the place is, the more the food suffers. Anything with a chicken breast in it tends to be overcooked, I'm afraid. The chicken caesar is overpriced (a rare accomplishment for this generally dirt-cheap establishment) and underflavored. The burgers, for the price, are not terrible (You can find better, but you're drinking. Have a burger). There's a wide array of toppings, but the add-ons are where they get you. A burger costs six bucks, but cheese, chili, etc. can easily push it up to a ten dollar adventure in inconsistency. The grilled cheese, strangely enough, is always excellent. Gooey, buttery, and just right. You can add bacon, grilled onions, turkey, etc. Just ask. They'll do it. The chipotle wings are much-lauded, but the one time I had them, they lacked any sort of spicy flavor whatsoever. They tasted mostly like oil. Maybe it was a fluke, but there aren't many affordable, tasty buffalo wing options in Santa Fe (Cowgirl's are traditionally sauced, which is a plus, but often rather mushy). Pity, really. Their daily specials are unbeatable, deal-wise. Chicken-fried steak on Sundays is satisfying and plentiful for five bucks, the carne adovada is spicy and competent, and the blue corn enchiladas are satisfying. If you're with a group, go for the Chili Cheese Fries ($5.00), but substitute the Beer-Battered Fries instead (flavor is the key, you see). Good crowd pleaser. THE SERVICE: Unfortunately, the service at Del Charro is the most varied. Often, there are super-professional waiters and waitresses that frequently deserve tips above and beyond 20%. However, there are some nights where you will search endlessly for a waiter to refill your drink or take your order. Some of the servers seem annoyed that they have to, well, serve you. And I don't think it's me. I'm nice. I tip well. I just would like a refill on my diet coke, please (which, if you're the designated driver, and you tell them so, they tend to give you for free. So that's nice.). THE ATMOSPHERE: This is the most consistent part of the Del Charro experience. Santa Fe is awash in adobe, stucco, and beige. Walking in to Del Charro is like walking into an oasis of leather, bronze, deep brown wood and red brick. It is an utterly pleasant place to be, and the portrait of Sam Elliot that gazes from above the fireplaces gives you a sense that everything's going to be okay, and that you finally get to rest for a while. The music is almost always fun, but there's a general tendency of the place to get a little too loud. OVERALL: Don't go on the weekends. Bad service and inconsistent food is likely to be had. If you're jonesing for cheap food and plentiful libations on a weeknight, however, Del Charro is your best bet in Santa Fe. read more

You changed the one thing that should have been sacrosanct. I know it has been over a year, but your Margaritas stink compared to what they used to be. That was probably the worst move I have seen in any Santa Fe restaurant in 8 years. The one thing that not only was NOT BROKEN, but was the highlight (among many, granted) and you blew it. That blows my mind. Did you save like 50 cents a drink? So keep it the old way and charge more. Bad, Bad, decision. So disappointed. We go here much, much, much less frequently now, and it is NOT a must stop with out of town friends anymore. The ONE STAR is only for this decision. It is still a very good place, but with one horrible decision. I would be the happiest Santa Fean in town if I could emend this review because you realized what a mistake that was. Arrived 7ish, seated ourselves, wonderful European feel, dark but not too. Service was A+. I had the Frito Pie A++ (and we're from Texas!) huge and really for 2 people. Hubby had the steak Quesadilla...YUM! And A+ perfecto share as an appetizer. I was SO very impressed with the crew who never stopped moving and serving and cleaning and serving! Just a wonderful place we will visit again while we're here. Oh! Excellent margarita's and the Santa Fe Pale Ale was served at the correct temperature. Clean too. I recently stayed at the Inn Of the Govs. and this is an establishment attatched to the hotel. I must say that yes the menu is small,, but it was a great place to hang out with the locals. OK yes the margs are from a mix,,, but they crown limes every day and soak them in tequila. (which are placed in margarita ) WOW I loved them,, food was always good and fresh. I will be back and stay at the hotel and will vist you often. Service can be spotty but who is not ?? Many locals gave us advice on other great places.. read more

As a bar, I'd give this place 2 stars, the Margaritas are overwhelmingly sweet. The mens restroom is so tiny it should just have a lock on the door. And the service here is, lets face it, bordering on awful. But. The Green Chili Cheeseburger here is absolutely amazing, the housemade potato chips are very good, and the fries are even better. When it's only two people it is fine, but when you take large groups, the wait staff can be a little overwhelmed or kind of mean when you are checkin out. Del Charro - The first of many - Bars Near Me - Santa Fe, New Mexico

Del Charro is on my don't miss list whenever I visit Santa Fe. It's got a great, cozy interior patio (it's walled in) which has a nice fireplace for chilly nights. The service can take a little while if the place is busy (which it almost always is) but it's a great place to go with a group of friends for cheap, consistent food and drinks. If you go on a busy night, be prepared to do some serious table jockeying... waiting for someone to leave and pouncing as quickly as possible on the vacated table.. Other patrons are usually gracious in giving up unused chairs at other tables. Most food items are around $5 and everything is generously portioned-- on one visit two orders of veggie nachos was enough for five adults to nosh on comfortably. Nothing I've had on the menu has been "Oh-my-goodness-I-must-eat-that-every-time-I'm-here" good but I would order everything again. They also serve food until midnight, which is pretty uncommon for the area. I eat late, so it's a welcome alternative to fast food. The margaritas are great and come in a martini shaker, so for $6, you get a martini-and-a-half... Much cheaper than other places in the area. They only have three beers on tap, Harp, Guinness and Blue Moon, so if you're looking for something local or exotic, this isn't your place. If you're looking for an inexpensive lunch or a place to catch up with friends over drinks, you've found it. read more
