FINALLY! I have been waiting for so long to eat at this place and finally! There was NO WAIT on a sunny San Franciscan Tuesday afternoon around 12:15pm for a table outside for 3 people. We got a margarita pizza and the special - some sort of bacon, green onions, onions and creamy sauce. The margarita pizza is 5 stars.. mmm. It looked oily and soggy, but it wasn't whatsoever and the tomato sauce was super fresh. the other pizza was okay. PD is leaping up the short list of my favorite local pizza joints. There's usually a wait, but while away the time with some wine (try the Nero d'Avolo Adesso) and check out the slightly psychedelic mural. Foodwise-the regular menu has many winners, but on V-day, they had two more stellar choices-a hen o' woods/fontina/thyme and the 'Purgatorio' with spicy tomato sauce/cheese/ egg on top. As FOSs (fans of 'shrooms), my friend and I wanted the hen o' woods pizza but all the lovey dovey couples had already snarfed it down. We ordered the 'Purgatorio" which was simply spicy tomato sauce , cheese and and egg over the top. This pizza was a model of how simple, flavorful ingredients coming together can shine. oh, do check out the desserts! #700...! Ordered the Margherita pizza (Tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, basil) and a special of the day pizza (prosciutto, white sauce, arugula). They were both tasty although I liked the white sauce pizza a lot more. This thin crust pizza is on the soft and chewy side. It surprises me how chewy the pizza is even though the crust is cardboard thin. Another surprise is how flavorful the dough is (or maybe just the olive oil). This pizza may not look like a lot at first but after two slices I was quite full (again with the olive oil). This wouldn't be my first pick for a pizza joint yet I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of their other combinations. read more

Delicious! Came here to knock another off The Big Eat SF list published by 7x7 and it's no joke, their pizza is delightful. The Margherita is oozing with delicious mozarella cheese and the amount of sauce and taste is pure perfection. The crust is thin and crispy. I came here with my favorite married couple (Cherl W. and her hubbs) and we sought to "discover greatness." So Cherl W.'s hubb, being creative as he is asked to order Pigs Ears... simply because on the chalkboard menu it was titled "Pigs Ears!" The ! made him think there was something special about it while Cherl W. and I sit there wondering how crazy he was for wanting this after ordering 2 pizzas and a salad. Thank god we let him order it because it was freaken uhhh-mazing! It was shaved pieces of Pig Ears poached then deep friend and topped with zesty lime and served with a chili oil sauce. omfg it was a hit!! We also ordered a salad that had tuna in it and the flavors were really nice. A nice lemony dressing and tasty greens... except I'm not a red cabbage fan so I could have done with out that. The other pizza we got aside the margherita was one that had sausage, onions and bell peppers. This was tasty too, but I loved the plain ol margherita. And Cherl dub's Hubb loved it too, with some pig ear remains on top. Small spot, really chic with some outdoor seating on a good day. When we asked the waitress to describe the Pigs Ears, we thought it would be some type of pasta with an interesting shape. Her answer of "well, they are real pigs ears" was intriguing - how could we resist? They were pretty good but really odd. Crunchy and chewie at the same time. We also had the Salsiccia pizza. One of my favorite pizzas in the neighborhood. Have sampled a few different pies now and I have to say one of my favs at Delfina is the Napoletana ($10), which is a simple concoction of tomato, anchovies, capers, hot peppers, olives and oregano. That's it. Being a cheese lover I'm surprised I would even bother with ordering a cheese-less pizza but trust me on this, the flavors are bold and amazing - plus you can always top it with parmesan. It doesn't quite have the cracker-crunch that I look for in a thin crust or it would get 5 stars. Update 3/19/07: Ordered 2 pizzas for take-out last night: the Margherita (tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, basil and parmigiano) and the Salsiccia (housemade fennel sausage, tomato, bell peppers, onions and mozzarella). Both were fairly disappointing as they were soggy as hell. They told us 15 minutes, we were there in 10 so it wasn't due to the take-out issue. We'll probably stick with the Napoletana from here on out if they can't keep a thin crust pizza nice and crispy. Dinner was a bummer. I love thin crusty pizza. Before owner Craig Stoll opened the pizzeria, he sent one of his best chef's to Naple's to study dough. The pizza they serve at Pizzaria Delfina is in the true neapolitano pizza tradition so if you're not keen on thin and crunchy. . .right right. . .you probably won't like this place. The menu features six thin crust pizze and two special pizze daily. Me, I love thin and crunchy! I love fancy pizza. I love funny fancy food and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I've tried many pizze, at Pizzeria Delfina, as well as the sides, and have never tasted anything less than divine, lovely, yummy, tasty. Wine list is nice and different, and the servers are helpful in picking something out you'll enjoy. I like the industrial yet cozy feel of the interior. great margherita compared to most in SF, but the lack of basil coverage puts it easily below tony's, una, and flour+water. The crust was... ok, but also failed the tip test--was too soggy in the middle. tomato sauce was good, and the ratio of sauce-to-cheese was good. service was great though, so I'd definitely recommend them--at least as a point of reference as far as SF neapolitan pizza goes. They wrote their soup of the day as Porcini Brodo with Chicken, Morels, Chanterelle, and Smoked Mozzarella $8. The soup got to the table and it was chicken pieces in chicken broth with cardoons. Not a single piece of those lux fungi in sight. I asked one server and they claimed it was in the brodo. Another server said they ran out and must've switched the soup. Delfina's pizza is as good as the pizza you find around the block, the pizza in your ordinary restaurant. Others may argue about the "special education" required for all Defina chefs, which demands all chefs to train in Italy, the originator of the pizza, where the rigorous course-load would train, enlighten, and create the bestest pizza maker ever! Well, it's not, really. The pizza is , well, crappy. If i was lost in the mission around dolores park, craving slabs of cheese and dough and artisan bread, I wouldnt pay the twenty plus dollars for a pie at delfina's pizza. Why go there when several blocks down is Little Star Pizza, arguably the best pizza place in san francisco. let's see, we tried their appetizer of cold-ass asparagus with yucky diced egg -- two food groups that don't go well together at all. Coupled with the bland flavors of the asparagus, which may not have been marinated well, and the disgusting texture of the cold egg, and you have the perfect food for an upset stomach! The pizza was a little better...but not that much better. Overcooked around the edges, teeming with charred ashes on the crust, the pizza wasn't the "best-pizza-i'd-in-sf." The dough, to be honest, seemed undercooked in the middle, which is surprising considering the ridiculous amount of time for the pizza to cook and to arrive on the table. let's say, somewhere between "omg, it's over 25 mins" to " 50 mins? kthxbye, im leaving." Why are you now using the soupy flavorless canned mess? I see you are so much busier and I am thrilled that secures your place in town and that it has even enabled you to branch out to the fillmore. The clam pie which used to be perfect is now all briny, but still $17 a pop. But if you bring the real sauce back I actually won't mind paying your high prices. Geez. Its been about 7 years since I've had dinner next door at Delfina. Always been meaning to try their Pizzeria. Wasn't feeling like roaming for parking and waiting for a table, so we did take out. Warning if you're picking up a phone order. Your pies will not be kept warm. They'll be sitting in a box waiting for you on the counter. This isn't necessarily bad. Shit, I love cold pizza. I would've preferred a couple a slices hot though... Although they were full house with people waiting for tables and other pick up orders, service was attentive, polite, fast, and friendly. I'm sure the pies would've been phenomenal if we had eaten there. Had the Margherita, Salsiccia, and (used to be) warm olives. Great tasting thin-crust. Great with olive-oil dunks. If and when we do it again, we'll dine in. I'm sure the rating will go up from there. read more

Sorry Delfina, I really wanted to like you. I've been looking forward to seeing what the hype was all about for a long time. So, last night, my roommate and I finally make the pilgrimage over at 9pm. Predictably, there is a huge line, and the wait for a seat indoors is an hour, and outdoors (in the super windy cold!) is 30 minutes. Since we live just a few blocks down, we opt not to wait to sit out in the cold. We order our pie and you say it'll be ready in 25 minutes. Great. So we hang out inside for 20 minutes. Then it's too crowded, so you ask us to wait outside and promise to call us when it's ready. So we go outside and wait. And wait. At 10 pm, we come back inside and complain and one of your staff asks about our pizza and it's just sitting out on top of the oven, so she hands us our pie and then sends us off on our way. We get home and the pizza is lukewarm. It was good. It wasn't so good that I wanted to wait an hour in the cold for it. I didn't much appreciate that you forgot to let us know our pizza was ready when you promised us that you'd let us know and sent us outside to wait. I didn't appreciate having to eat a lukewarm pizza. I didn't appreciate being dismissed by the waitstaff without any apology or anything after clearly making us wait too long for our pizza. Then again, I understand. The place is crazy popular. The business is really good. The poor staff is overwhelmed and it's easy to lose track of people. But, being understanding is one thing. It's not worth my time and money ($15 for a medium size pizza isn't a great deal, but isn't atrocious either). I'm not coming by to order pizza again. I was surprised to find a $1.50 "Healthy SF" charge added to my bill. What's up with the 15% surcharge? Not only did my friend and I order different pizzas and they both came out looking EXACTLY the same, the pizza tasted like absolutely nothing. I took several bites before reality sunk in. I looked over at my friend and he at me. We didn't have to speak to know what we were both wondering. "Where exactly did the taste go? Did someone steal it? I don't get Pizzeria Delfina. I honestly don't. I've noticed this nasty trend in San Francisco for restaurants to take Italian-American cuisine, the likes of which can be found in any deli or bodega on the East Coast, and celebrate it as if it were the Second Coming. Despite the giant lines crowing the sidewalk every day, Delfina is not remarkable and it is almost certainly not worth waiting for. While not attempting to engage in the perennial New York versus San Francisco food debate, Delfina would never receive the accolades that it does were it in the New York area. Simply, the food is plain, unimaginative, and not even well done. I have had pizza from Delfina twice, both here on 18th St and their location near FIllmore Street. Their dough and crust is just all right, but it is their flavors where they really fall short. The pizza is bland and boring. Delfina also does not push the definition of pizza. Nothing new, nothing unique, nothing that can only be found at Delfina. By itself, that is fine! There's nothing wrong with taking classical dishes and doing them well. But Delfina manages to make everything taste bland and boring. So now when I see the crowds waiting for an hour for a table, I can walk on by without any regrets. read more

We had a glass of wine while we waited, and the waitress was really really accommodating The Tricolore salad was interesting and lite. The 4 cheese pizza was great as well The salciccia pizza was ok. You know a place is good if people are lined up on the sidewalk waiting for a table. You will have to wait. And you may have to wait 30 minutes plus. However, you can order a glass of wine while you stand around awkwardly on the sidewalk while trying not to drool on the patrons seated at the sidewalk tables. You will salivate. The place is small, but cozy and right next door to big brother Delfina. It's casual and neighborhoodie. The menu is small, but not too small. And it seemed like they run out of certain things towards the end of the night. We ordered the Early Girl Tomato Salad to start. Oh, sweet, delicious tomatoes. We enjoyed this very much. Then we ordered the Salsiccia Pizza, it has fennel sausage and peppers. So delish. The crust was thin like New York style, I folded mine in half. The end of the crust was fluffy and chewy with just the right crispness. Hella good. Dessert was gross. We ordered the Ricotta Cannoli. It was sort of lemony tasting, but I am not sure if it was supposed to be lemony. But it was more like yogurt or soft serve, rather than ricotta. Disappointing. We were rather disappointed that the server didn't ask if we were unhappy with the dessert because it was obvious that we didn't eat it. But I digress. I enjoyed this place and wish it were in the East Bay. I will definitely be going back, just not getting dessert. I think I will get ice cream at Bi-Rite next time. :) read more

On another 7x7 Big Eat SF mission, the boyfriend and I came to Pizzeria Delfina for the Margerita. It's a small place, with a handful of tables inside and outside. We sat at the bar, which I didn't mind cuz I like to watch the cooks in action. The waitress brought us the handwritten menus, which change every day, with exception of their pizza staples. We started off with an appetizer called Mozzerella en Carozza, which is a simple but divine combo of mozerrella and bread cubes on a stick, lightly breaded and fried, topped with an anchovy butter sauce... it was cheesy, salty goodness! So the meal was off to a good start. Then comes the Margerita pizza. The crust was nice and thin, really crispy, and the cheese and sauce ratio was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite! read more

A few weeks ago, Delfina & the Pizzeria had gotten their hands on a bunch of white truffles and created a few new menu items to celebrate. As a pizza lover, I ordered the Anniversario pizza which, as far as I can tell was their regular Panna pizza but with a couple of eggs & white truffle shavings added. As usual, I called to order a pie for take out since I didn't want to wait for a table/bar spot and the response was that the chef refused to allow that because it would ruin the flavor. I had to use my "but I live next door" card and after a brief conversation with the chef, I got approved. Yay! When I went to pick up the pie, the chef, Anthony, came out with a bowl of white truffles which had a sublime aroma (yes, he let me get a good sniff). Everybody got a kick out of shaving the white truffles onto a take out pie. After paying $53 to get it out the door (no, it's not cheap, but it's well worth it), I immediately rushed home and opened the box. I had to stop eating more than a few times just to admire the aroma of the truffles. I can say pretty unequivocally, this is the single best pizza I've ever tasted. Yes, it's pricey, but, damn, it's good. Why am I telling you all this today? Well, it looks like the Anniversario pie is back this week. I may have to go back for seconds. read more

I can't stop thinking about this pizza. When I think about what I want for lunch, I think of Pizzeria Delfina. Too bad it's a bit far from work or I'd be there all the time. As everyone else has said, come early. This place is small. We arrived at around 5:30 on Saturday & waited about 30 minutes for a seat. The employees were all super busy but they seem to be a pretty happy bunch. I was hoping for an outdoor table but we took the first available, which was a seat at the "bar". It ended up being OK tho cuz we got to watch them making the pizzas & we did a lot of "Oooh, I want THAT!". That's how we came to order the brussels sprouts. They were amazing! Tender, juicy, & lemony. For pizzas we ordered the broccoli rabe & the prosciutto. Both were delicious. The prosciutto slices are placed on the pizza after it comes out of the oven, which is different. It looks pretty but that makes it hard to take dainty bites. You'll make a mess but really, who cares? We had no leftovers which made me really sad at around midnight when I was having a major Pizzeria Delfina craving. What do I offer that makes my review different that the other 2000+ reviews. Probably very little. Here is the deal. For years I have said that pizza at Tony's is the best in The City hands down. I still stand by that. However, I had not been to Delfina. I had wanted to go, but the parking in the Mission is the worst! After finally going, I can say that Delfina is a close second to Tony's. I will also say that it has a different vibe and food style than Tony's. What I loved the most about the pizza at Delfina is the crust. There was something magical and buttery about it. It is amazing. What did I learn today? Get the olive appetizer, it will change the way you think about olives and how they should be served. read more

Just what the stars say...I've experienced better, I've experienced Gialina's.... Here....I experienced charrrrrrrrred dough, too charred -- borderline burnt. The flavors were mediocre for such "high-end" ingredients. Atmosphere wise, too small, not in a charming way, and not in a way that I thought would be appealing, since all I smelled was burnt dough coming out of the kitchen. On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, my 3 friends and I ordered four different pizzas to try out. Check it, yo! 1) Margherita: Tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, basil 2) Panna: Tomato sauce, cream, basil, shaved parmigiano 3) 4 Formaggi: Tomato, mozzarella, fontal, provolone, pecorino 4) Salsiccia: Housemade fennel sausage, tomato, bell peppers, onions, mozzarella Price Range: $11-18 (4-6 slices) I know it's on the steep side for pizza, but it's light, delicious, and all the toppings are fresh, which makes it ten times better. Service: Nice, quick and friendly. Wait Time: 15-30 minutes on the average (Make sure ALL of your party is there and write your name on the black chalkboard on the right side as you enter inside the pizzeria.) The June issue of GQ has a piece by Alan Richman on the best pizza in America. He has Pizzeria Delfina's Panna Pizza as the #3 pizza in all of the 50 known United States. ...It also has Christian Bale on the cover, so in my mind, Jon Connor says Pizzeria Delfina has the #3 pizza in the world. And Bruce Wayne knows good food. Or I'm just afraid Patrick Bateman is going to brutally slaughter me if I disagree. I had some out of town friends who had read the GQ article and wanted to try the pizza in San Francisco, which usually isn't a request I get from visitors, but who was I to argue; I'm a full on wannabe foodie, so the more name-dropping places I can visit, the better. The Panna Pizza here is really something special, but it isn't pizza. The use of heavy cream is lieu of cheese defeats my palette's categorization engine. It is very good and the crust of this and every other pizza we tried was magnificent, but again it isn't pizza. Worth a try though. The crust has great combination of crisp skin and chewy interior. We also sampled the Margherita and Salsiccia. Again, wonderful and both of these were closer to my traditional definition of pizza. Although, my friend suggested the homemade fennel sausage in the Salsiccia wasn't as a flavorful as the name suggests. I'm usually more a fan of Arinell's style greasy-slice, but there is a place in my heart (and stomach) for this type of pizza as well. We had a party of 5 and had to wait a bit on a Saturday afternoon (around 2pm), but they offered to bring out drinks while we waited and the staff was very pleasant. The decor was a good for a late-lunch spot, a pleasant urban design. My one complaint was the music level for an afternoon. I don't want to have to shout over a Beck remix in order to talk to friends I haven't seen in months. Lower the volume to ambient and it would be fine. Four stars because of the atmosphere being non-conducive to conversation and also because the pizza was good, but I wouldn't go back for any particular reason. ...Unless Bateman forces me to. read more

Came here with very high expectations after hearing several people praise the quality of the pizza at this establishment. The pizza definitely did not live up to expectations: it was simply average. I could name two better pizza places in San Francisco that create an authentic Italian pizza. The service was simply mediocre. We did not have a reservation (my fault) but were willing to wait. We were originally told the wait would be 20. Turned out to be about 45. First rule of customer service: set the right expectations. Also, the waitress seemed annoyed to be there. It was almost painful to ask for something. The guy that helped us, on the other hand, was perfect. The only real positive note of the night. Once again, the rule applies: the success of a restaurant in San Francisco merely depends upon the location. For those that might think I was a bit too harsh on the quality of the pizza, I was born and raised in Italy and came to the US not too long ago. I have good and great pizzas before. Best pizza ever. The wait is long but its for a good reason. I never venture down to the mission that often only to restaurants that I hear are good and when I want to get out of marina/pac heights/russian hill. So when my friend told me we were going to eat there, I was kinda skeptical. Granted the place is right across the street and is often swarmed with people waiting outside, I wasn't too thrilled. But he went downstairs and put our name down ahead of time. We ate at the counter and were seated right in front of a pillar (no view, just an ugly picture of a fish). I got a little view, but apparently, watching them make the pizzas and the other dishes was the highlight of any "first timers". We later moved down to the end after a couple next to us left and got to watch the fastest pizza making ever. Very impressive. We had an order of the meatballs and WOW....comes in 4s in tomato sauce...made my night worth while. The pizza is thin, they do not slather it with shredded mozzarella cheese, but instead put chunks of cheese all over. It melts just as fast and tastes better! Wine was not great, was suggested something that tasted like dirt and nothing. Soft drinks were probably the most overpriced items on the menu. Be prepared: Get meatballs, pizza is to die for, long wait for inside, longer wait for outside, don't come starving or come starving and get a great meal. Parking sucks in the mission. I take my pizza very seriously. I group it into categories so the folded greasy slices don't get jealous of the classy Italian-style pizzas. Pizzeria Delfina now owns the classy Italian-style group. I tried a few different pies and appetizers but the Panna is heaven on earth. I am salivating just thinking of the amazing mix of flavor sitting on that delicious thin crust. So..me and the wifey first went here about a month ago. We didnt know we were supposed to put our names on the chalkboard (yes, we are that delayed), so consequently, it took some time to be seated. It seemed like a bad musical chairs game flashback where you always are left standing. The silver lining is we got to really study the menu and after debating each pizza, we decided on the salisiccia sp? which remains our favorite 4 visits later. Cannoli is highly recommended as well. For a side dish, I recommend the asparagus, served cold, and the oil-cured olives, served hot. Howz that for a stylistic switch up? Best pizza in the Bay Area. Being Italian, I am very picky about pizza. This place exceeded my expectations. Yes, it is small, there is usually a line and parking is a pain. But you will not find a better pizza. read more

I just don't get why people are so impressed with this restaurant. The food wasn't bad, but it was also not particularly good. You could tell they were using very high-quality ingredients and the presentation was much better than with normal pizza, but once the food is actually in your mouth there is little to distinguish it. The portion sizes are small, and I just about always leave the restaurant feeling essentially unsatisfied. Sadly several of my friends are huge fans and I am dragged back regularly. read more

Been next door a few times but never to the pizza wing. Always packed to the hilt it's hard to actually eat there without having to sit around and wait. So this time I decided to get one to go. Amatriciana! Generally a Roman or More generically a Lazio style pasta, it was present in pizza form. Mmmmm guanciale, pecorino, wine, chili, salt and tomatoes...pretty darn tasty. I'm not sure Ill ever stop and eat here but I noticed they've got Italian tripe and hand pulled mozz too, so I'd gladly do another to go run. read more

We stopped by this famous shop during our food walking tour of the Mission district. There are actually two locations next door to each other one is a full blown Italian restaurant and the other is Delfina Pizza. We sampled some of their delicious pizza the crust is super crispy but the thicker part of the dough still has a good rewarding chew quality to it. The tomatoes and mozzarella were super fresh and you could taste it in every bite! If you are in the Mission and crazing some Naples style pizza this is a MUST try location. read more
