The pizza quality is almost on par with Berkeley's Gioia. The crust is very thin, bubbled-up in the right places and has a delicate crunch. There's a hint of sweetness (which I love -- better observed in the crust than in the sauce) but mostly it's well-balanced. The ingredients are a bit more thinned out than on Gioia slices and the slices here aren't quite foldable, if that's your thing. (I'm leaving the 5 stars for Gioia.) We had two pies -- the Broccoli Raab and the one topped with eggs overeasy and both were excellent. The antipasti dishes also really shine. The "Insalata Tricolore" was a perfectly mingled salad of raddichio, endive and arugula and was cut with ultra thin slices of padano for a little salt and texture. And the white bean (Cannelini?) salad packed some bright, bold flavor. If you are a group of 5, two antipasti dishes and two pizzas might slightly underfeed you. We were just satisfied but I think we could have ordered another antipasti dish or each enjoyed another slice. Your dessert discussion will be especially lively, although we had ours elsewhere. Weather was on the chilly side but we dined in comfort under the heat lamp at a sidewalk table. while in SF, my friend and i went here for lunch before our flight back to LA. i think we got there around 10 or 11AM and there was a small group of people waiting out front. we put our names in and went to check out Bi Rite Market next door. i think our wait was probably about 15 min or so. we were seated in the bar area, which faces a window directly into the kitchen, which was really cool. i really liked that we were able to see everything being made. we started off with an antipasti of stretched mozzarella. it was a huge ball of mozzarella drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with salt and pepper, with a side of arugula and two slices of crusty bread. i love fresh mozz and it was sooo good all together with the arugula. my friend ordered the Salsiccia (Housemade fennel sausage, tomato, bell peppers, onions, mozzarella) which was really flavorful and yummy. i ordered the Panna (Tomato sauce, cream, basil, shaved parmigiano) with the sausage added, as per recommendation of our waiter. it was creamy but light and the flavor from the sausage just balanced it all out. it reminded me of Pizzeria Mozza in LA, but the atmosphere more bright and crisp. i love Delfina! its a definite go-to or must-try kind of place. read more

I think this place may have been a bit too over-hyped for me. I had some time to finally get some food with a friend of mine, and we headed out here to the mission to snoop around. After a bit of yelping and feelin' like getting some pizza, we came across Pizzeria Delfina. The wait wasn't tooo crazy and there were some seats, but we decided to order two pizzas to go. One Margerita pizza and one Prosciutto pizza. The margerita pizza was actually very tasty and I would definitely order that again if I came across this place again. Crust was nice and light and the toppings just tasted fresh. The other pizza was aight. I expected more flavor, but also didn't expect the crust to be burnt. It was a little hard to eat too with the cut and meat laid out on top. It wasn't bad, but I would try something else before I gave this one another go around. My four girlfriends and I wanted to have a picnic there so we just grabbed some blankets and ordered some food from Pizzeria Delfina to-go to have at the park. This was indeed a good idea! After having the Proscuitto pie from the California St location, I knew that was the one I wanted to have. My friends also chose the pizza with the four cheeses (4 Formaggi). We requested arugula to be added to that pizza but they forgot. Luckily, we had ordered a salad that had arugula so we manually added it ourselves. The pizzas were good but I'd pass on the salad. Sometimes writing a review on yelp is like walking the streets of New York , bumping into hundreds of others as you make your way through the busy streets. And I ask myself, what I might offer to a place with already 444 reviews. Probably not a whole lot. However that doesn't mean that my experience there was any less, or diluted by the masses. New York taught me to elbow through. Well who needs New York pizza when you have the likes of Delfina and Gialina in the offerings? I sure don't. The small scale might make you feel like you are visiting the "big city", minus the attitude. Be cool sitting at the bar/stool/looking into where the magic is happening area - you'll get seated a little faster. 2. Get the four cheese pizza and ask for pepperoni. (This is my go-to pizza. Thin crust pizza afficionados - come here! The crust here is perfectly crisp, with the right amount of chewiness. The margherita pizza, which for me is the measuring stick of any pizza place, is excellent. It's a quaint little pizzeria in the mission (OH and right across form bi-rite ;) Their pizza is pretty good. Thin crust and pretty standard toppings. I've had the margherita (average) and I also had their special with artichoke hearts and prosciutto (yum!!!). Came here on a Friday night around 7:30 with my girls and this place was filled with a long line out on the sidewalk. Tip: remember to write your party on the board or you're standing in line for nothing. Also do not suggest going with a large party as the tables are small and there is not much seating. We got seated outdoors after about 1.5 hour wait. I typically do not like outdoor seating but they had an outdoor heater so we were warm and toasty. Food: We ordered the Saffron Arancini (9 crispy, cheesy risotto balls which makes a good appetizer), a string bean appetizer which I have forgotten what it was called since the menu changes (nothing special and I would not get this again), Prosciutto Pie (thought the fresh arugula was a nice touch to the pizza but it was slightly too greasy for me), Salisiccia (I liked this particular pizza more than the Prosciutto Pie. The flavor was more present and all the topping went well together). Price: It is pretty pricey for pizza and I would not spend $18 on a small pizza everyday but I thought it was worth the try. We went in having high hopes for Pizzeria Delfina after reading rave reviews in 7x7 about it and their fabulous margherita pizza (One of 7x7's 100 big eats in SF), but were totally let down. The wait was short because we sat at the bar and got in at a good time (1PM on a Saturday), but after we sat down, the crowd started forming. A BIG crowd. Which seemed to wait forever to be seated. The restaurant itself is tiny. VERY tiny. As a matter of fact, their bathroom is about a third the size of the entire dining room. Seriously: I went to the bathroom on the way out and wondered why they didn't knock down the wall to make more room for diners! But I digress... The staff was friendly, but the service was SLOW. It took about 40-45 minutes for us to get the only thing we ordered to share: Their margherita pizza. The pizza was bland -- completely unremarkable. The sauce was thin, runny and there wasn't enough of it. It was kinda like canned no-sodium tomatoes without any spices. The cheese was tough and splotched onto the pizza. (Traditional I realize, but not enough cheese.) And there were only about three small pieces of basil to be found. For the two of us, the bill was just under $20 which included the pizza (rather small, IMHO), tax and tip. This place stays pretty busy no matter what time of day you come in. If you like Italian style pizza this is definitely your place. They don't overwhelm the pizza with too much cheese or sauce. If you're willing to wait, you can get a decent sized pizza for $10-15. We ordered the Panna pizza which was had a subtle, yet not too overwhelming flavour to it. They also do lots of to-go orders at the counter. It's a tiny place with very little seating so plan accordingly. It's a good alternative to some other pizza places in the area. These ladies and gents were so nice to a wannabe foodie all by her lonesome one psuedo-rainy November afternoon, that's definitely a good portion of the star rating right there. But my to-go boxed-up homemade lamb sausage specialty of the day (or week?) pizza... Consumed in my car partially because I was listening to a football game on the radio but partially because I tend to be antisocial in my most intimidated hello-I-am-an-obvious-outsider state? UH MAY ZING Not only is it a gorgeous pie, with just the right amount of fresh toppings and a particularly beautiful charred crust adorning the bottom, but it tastes remarkable. As mentioned elsewhere, I am a bit of a pizza connoisseur. As always, the perfect pie is perfect plain, so my first one is always plain. My search for pizza led me to Delfina at lunch one day, and suffice it to say, I was pleased. While the pizza was just a touch too thin (yah, I'm that annoyingly picky), it was overall fantastic. I love a wood-fire oven, and I love it when they don't make it too crunchy. The sauce was sparse enough (as it should be) but not barely-there. The cheese was delicious, the basil was well-placed. It made me happy. Very happy, in fact, and I was almost touched. The flaws are so small that I feel bad even mentioning them, so I won't. Tried the margherita pizza in the mission location of this popular joint. The crust was slightly doughier than I imagined, but nice and chewy. The cheese was chunkier than pizzetta 211's pie and delfina's tomato sauce seemed more of an unadulterated sauce, less tart than pizzetta's. Also had a nice insalata tricolore to wash down the pizza. This place is good, but the wait is always horrible! Get there early or eat at the counter. I like the broccoli raab pizza. I've had a cucumber salad there which was delicious, and once I had the cauliflower. The cauliflower was awesome, but it was a little bit cold. Bummer! My question is, who would want to sit outside? As parents, my husband and I are ultimately to blame for this, but Pizzeria Delfina's got to accept some responsibility too. Yay, I finally had pizza here! It was way good and worth the buzz. My friend got a giant crush on the cute blond waitress and really wanted me to mention that. There's a cute blond waitress, there. We got two different pizzas, the four cheese and the margherita, but I'm pretty sure either they are the exact same pizza, or they brought us two of the same pizzas. Either way, there were good. We also got a three-color salad with radishes, lettuce and parmesan which was good. I would advise that you don't order the cheapest glass of wine they have. I did that and it was horrible. Um, pizza alla carbonara? Can you say: AMAZING? About two months ago my aunt and I took the afternoon off to grab some pizza here and man were we ever glad we did this. Pizza alla carbonara was the pizza of the day...I think it should be pizza of the YEAR. Two eggs cracked on top with pancetta, fresh cheese and onions (or was it leeks? I can't remember anymore). Anyway, it's probably the richest most savory pizza I've ever had...it'll be a while before another pizza can top this. I never thought I'd have a "moment" with pizza...but was wrong. I had a moment at Pizzeria Delfina. I guess it's not surprising, since everyone raves about this place! Service was awesome! The hostesses/servers we encountered were each super sweet! Even though we waited almost an hour (on a Monday night), they made sure to serve us beverages while waiting! There were 5 of us, so what better way to experience Pizzeria Delfina than to order 5 pizzas! So, here are my thoughts: Yes, the Margherita is good (Margherita with Hen of the Woods Mushrooms is better!) but I'm not sure it was worthy of a spot on 7x7's Big Eat. The Salsiccia should have made it to the list. It's PERFECT! OMG. I think it was the fennel sausage and mozzarella that did it, coupled with the fact that it had a crispy thin crust that was to die for. The second it met my mouth, my mouth thanked me. *Moment of silence* Okay...moving on. I think I'll have to call it my favorite pizza so far. Side note: I'm not a huge fan of sparkle(ing) water, but drop a slice of lemon in it...eat it with your pizza and you have a wonderfully balanced meal with a splash of "sparkle"! I'm sure it contributed to my Salsiccia "moment"! The Purgatorio was good too...the farm eggs were a bit distracting but paired perfectly with the spicy tomato sauce! The Insalata Tricolore we had was fresh and flavorful although it wasn't worth the price. We split a margherita pizza and I was unimpressed. Perhaps we should've taken a chance on one of the more "fancy" pizzas but a think a good pizza establishment should be able to make an impressive margherita pizza. There were literally THREE microscopic pieces of basil on the pizza. Margherita pizzas have only three ingredients--tomato sauce, cheese and basil! How do you screw this up?! I have came to San Francisco to find the best pizza and because of Yelpers' raving reviews for Pizzeria Delfina, I've found my favourite! I was seriously not a pizza fan but their pizzas were amazingly mind blowing! My salciccia and seafood pizzas were perfectly balanced; not too much filling and very well seasoned. The crust was crunchy all around on the outside, even at the bottom where the fillings were, and very slightly chewy on the inside. Imagine, I could pick up a slice and it won't go limp on me. Their menu was also concise, unpretencious and interesting. What else can I say, Pizzeria Delfina got it right! p/s: note that they don't take reservations when I went there for lunch. We really enjoyed PIzzeria Delfina. They had a nice selection of neopolitan style pizzas and a good beer/wine list (what more can you ask for at a pizza place). We ordered the special pizza with Speck, which was amazing, as well as the lamb sausage pizza, which was good but a little dry. I would definitely get the special again. I really enjoyed the crust on the pizza - just a little burnt, perfect! Overall a great experience. In a way, any pizza spot in San Francisco that I check out is going to be at a default disadvantage by having to be compared to Tony's Pizza Napoletana, a five-star spot in SF that, in my opinion, dishes up some of the best pizza in the country. In the case of Pizzeria Delfina while Tony's isn't dethroned, it certainly isn't a blowout comparison by any stretch. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? The indoor outdoor atmosphere at Pizzeria Delfina is great albeit a wee bit cramped at times, and the friendly staff manage what can often be the lengthy line quite well. The pizzas come out quick, so come hungry. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? My party of three got two pizzas to share, both of which were $18.50, and it turned out to be just the right amount of food. That's not cheap, but it isn't ridiculous either. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? In short, both of the pizzas that I ordered were excellent. For starters, the Salsicca, with fennel sausage, tomato, bell peppers, and onions, had fantastic flavor, good portions of toppings, and came together with flavorful crust. However, it was the Prosciutto Pie that stole the show, with generous portions of flavorful prosciutto being complimented by a brilliant combo of mozzarella and caciocavallo cheeses topped with arugula. Sensational. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? In a vast majority of cities in this country, I would give Pizzeria Delfina this fifth star without question or hesitation. However, while the pizza is good, I still strongly feel that Tony's Pizza Napoletana serves up a much broader range of pies that are consistently top tier, and for that reason I can't say I would recommend Pizzeria Delfina over the competition in San Francisco. Recommended. Sleek but not stuffy. Reasonably priced gourmet (read: non-greasy, choice toppings) pizza. I went on a Saturday afternoon and had no wait time. Interesting mix of patrons (couple with baby, older tourists, Vietnam vet, Europeans) - which I can only mention because the tables give you little more than elbow room. Delphina converted me to a thin-crust lover. This is how good it is....every other month or so, we drive 30 minutes, spend about 10-15 minutes looking for parking, and then wait up to another 30 minutes, all just to eat a clam, Margherita, or Purgatorio pie! The very first bite makes it all worth it. Sitting at the bar is the best. You get a great view of the amazing pizza makers at work and plus, you are guaranteed a pizza freshest out of the oven! This isn't everyday pizza. This is like special pizza. You don't come here when you get that pizza craving, you come here when you get that special food craving. I finally got around to eating here and it was well worth sitting and waiting to get one of the 5 tables. Started with a bottle of Gragnano and had the Insalata Tricolore. I guess we hadn't had enough salad so we also go he grilled fennel with water buffalo goat cheese. Pretty fantastic. The Zuppa Fagioli had amazing peppery kick and a nice olive oil finish. The main event of course was the Salsiccia with pepperoni. Thin crust, spicy sauce, fresh peppers. It was all there. Like I said, special pizza, not everday pizza.
