Been wanting to write up Pizzaria Delfina for a while now, but it had been a few months since I'd eaten there, so out of fairness I really felt I needed to refresh my memory before reviewing it. We went again yesterday evening, so I'm ready to go.
The short version: PD's pizza is fantastic! Really fresh and authentic, though one would expect as much from a place that sent its pizza chefs to study up in Italy.
The longer version:
The crust at PD is some of the best I've had in that style (traditional Italian, as opposed to NY style or deep dish) -- just thin enough, nice and crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside without being chewy or undercooked. Maybe a little thin in the center so that it ends up a little floppy from the toppings, but that's more a complaint I have with the Italian style in general than with PD specifically.
I really like the sauce. Very herb-y & flavorful. The mozzarella, for me, is one of the highlights; take a bite that happens to be mostly cheese and you'll appreciate how fresh and creamy it tastes. Last night we had their fennel sausage pizza and were really impressed with the sausage and red peppers (I could have just had a plate of the sausage; it was that good, and the fennel really makes it). The red peppers picked up the flavors of all the other toppings on the pizza and were just delicious. We had the Margherita a few months back, and I have a lot of the same comments about that.
There's a respectable wine selection, though neither of us know much from Italian wines so when we've gone we've usually ended up taking their suggestions. They are happy to give you a little taste of whatever you want, so generally it's not too difficult to find something that you're happy with. You may bring your own bottle for $15.
For dessert, my boyfriend ordered the Baba Rum with strawberry sauce, which was a delicious rum-soaked cake stuffed with a sweetened cheese and drizzled in strawberry sauce. I was too stuffed to have more than a couple of bites, but ohhh, baby. That was some rum-soaked heaven. Made me really wish I'd had more room.
As for seating, your options are many. You can dine indoors, outdoors (nice because of heat lamps), or at the pizza bar, where you can watch them making the pizzas. Beware that the wait can often be kind of long, especially on the weekends and especially as it gets late, so be prepared for that. read more
