Very Dirty! I live in the Thumb now and used to go to this restaurant all the time when I lived in Livonia. We were in the city and I had my new wife with me and told her I know of a great Italian Restaurant. I have never had a bad meal here in twenty five years. I had not been to this restaurant in two years. My wife went to use the restroom and reported that it was the dirtiest restroom that she had been in any restaurant. I remember when Mr. Deluca had the restrooms redone, it was a very nice job. I went to the guys room and could not believe the dirt on the door! Once inside, I could see black mold on the toilet bases, and when I went for a closer inspection, there was a dead cockroach in the east toilet. We had already ordered the food so we decided to stay. The food was still great, but I did not enjoy it thinking of the servers touching those bathroom doors, and then handling our food. When we went to leave, there was an aluminum serving tray that I observed setting on a vacant table that was filthy with years of grime. How can they serve drinks and food off something so disgusting. I would not want to even touch it with my bare hands. When I was passing the bar I peered into the back kitchen, absolutely filthy! Sorry Mr. Deluca, I cant come back here again. Not that I am a clean freak, I eat at some pretty rough taverns, but yuck! If you want proof of the poor conditions, look at the screen door at the back of the building where the employee's come into work at the north parking lot. The door is black with grime, large gaps in the bottom where mice and rats come in. Grease thick all around the dumpster. I remember a proud Mr. Deluca greeting guests almost every night. This place has been around since the 1950s and was started by Two Brothers. It is so good I hate to admit it I ate there three times in one week. I have been a customer here since I was a small child so for 30 plus years. I even had my high school grad party here. FYI I am 34 now. In the last couple of years it hasn't been the same. The ravioli's used to be one of the main stay dishes. They were big and homemade. Now the ones they serve look like someone pulled them out of the freezer. I even tried there fettuccine Alfredo and the sauce was like soup with no flavor. I don't know what has changed over the years, but it is not the same homemade Italian I grew up. I've been coming to this place for over 10 years and a lot hasn't changed... which is a very good thing. My family was never one really for ordering the pizza but it always looks pretty good. We always start with the antipasto salad and it is always delicious and gone in about a minute once it hits the table. Then for an entree it is usually a toss up for me between the spaghetti parm and the cheese ravioli. This time I went with the ravioli which to me are the strangest ones I've seen. So good to be back home and get a chance to visit an OG Italian Restaurant. My family came here religiously thru the mid 80's and 90's before some of moved away to warmer climates. Every time we come back home, this is a "must have" for sure. Outside of NY, this is my favorite pizza. You can also not beat their Veal Park. Last night I ordered the small Veal Parmigiana, and a small Cheese Pepperoni pizza. Way too much food, but couldn't get on my flight to Cali without having both. Lastly, their house Italian dressing in the salads is the best you'll find in the country. They are generally so busy that the wait staff make decent money and stay for many years. This restaurant is the worst because of their service. The lady at the front giving orders has a attitude and when you say "have a good night" she does not say it back. Also, when you ask her something she gives you the rudest response. The food is mid. Antonio's is far better because at least the service is PERFECT. The breadsticks by themselves, 5 stars. I went for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and this place was packed. I had spaghetti and my boyfriend had alfredo. The sauce in both dishes was amazing and the portions are huge, we could have split one plate and still had leftovers. So really good for the price! This review should have been made in September of 2016. My family booked a party here to gather just after my mother died. My mother loved this place and we were going to honor her memory. I understand that there is some chaos in large groups and things can be missed. This isn't about something so petty. I was the second person to arrive. I ordered a 1/2L of white wine as I figured I would share a little with my boyfriend and we would be there a while. A little while after, a few more of my family members showed up, the waitress knew them because they lived in the area. They ordered drinks and got them. Mine still hadn't arrived. I didn't say anything. Then a large group of 20somethings arrived. All were friends of the waitelresses daughter. They ordered a plethora of drinks. They were all served. I was not. So I asked for my order again, politely. But not after making a comment about how annoyed I was getting to my boyfriend. Which in retrospect the waitress may have heard. My wine arrived as just a glass. I reminded her of my original order and she said she would bring it right out. 10 minutes later the salads arrived. My order still had not been delivered. I reminded her again. I finally got my order as everyone was finishing their salads and I began to get the distinct impression that the waitress had some problem with me. When it came to the dinner orders. I was the second to order as well. My cousin ordered a pizza for him and his boys, I ordered the small portion of veal and everyone after me made their orders, some simple, some complex. The meals began to come out one by one, a few minutes after I finally got my correct wine order. Every meal but mine. It took me several tries to catch the waitress while she clung to her friends at the far end of our group, but when I pointed it out to her she apologized and said she forgot me and said she would put it in right away. My entire family ate their meals and I had wine and no food. To make up for it the waitress kept piling side dishes of barely luke warm spaghetti in front of me. I ate a few bites but started to feel queezy. My meal finally arrived as my family was boxing up theirs and saying their goodbyes, but I didn't even notice because I was in the bathroom vomiting. I had eaten the salad, a few bites of spaghetti and a half glass of wine and I couldn't keep any of it down. I left the bathroom and went straight to my car. I just wanted to leave. My meal was untouched on the table. My boyfriend took the check and found that the waitress had the audacity to charge me for the meal I never got to enjoy with my grieving family. And not only that, but she charged me for the double order when I had ordered the small portion. He asked for the manager and explained the situation and that we wouldn't be paying for the meal untouched on the table because it arrived after the dinner was over. Disgruntled, the waitress slammed money down on the counter in front of my boyfriend, a customer, and mumbled something angrily under her breath as she stormed off. The ultimate test of a restaurant, in my opinion, is to order takeaway during a dinner rush. I had been driving past de Luca's for months, but had yet to stop in. My husband is taking his grandfather to a Lions' game this evening, so when he asked what myself and our one year old daughter would like, de Luca's sprang to mind. I ordered the ravioli with mushrooms and meatballs. First of all, it was a ridiculously large 'half-portion,' but I'm not going to complain. The ravioli was tender and HUGE, stuffed with flavorful cheese. The sauce had a robust flavor and reminded of me of my grandmother's idea of spaghetti, where everyone got one softball- sized meatball. The mushrooms were canned, but decent. Now the real test: my toddler actually ate some, and cried when I took it away after she started throwing it, which is an A+ in baby language. I'm so disappointed. My friend and I have wanted to go to this restaurant since we were kids. For decades I've believed it must be fabulous, but our hopes were dashed last night. Let me start by saying our waitress, Taylor, did a great job and my comment is directly related to the food. I first ordered a salad with bleu cheese on the side. The dressing was actually just mayonnaise with a hint of bleu cheese. It was sort of nasty. Next, our sides of spaghetti were cold. The pasta was starchy and the sauce was tart and tasted old. The most disappointing part of the meal were our steaks. Here is the crazy thing.....not only were the cuts of meat fabulous, they were cooked perfectly BUT WITH ABSOLUTELY NO SEASONING. Not even salt or pepper!!! What a shame they didn't even use the basics. In my opinion, a good steak should be eaten without the need for steak sauce. The waitress told me that they have been there for over 50 years! I ordered the spaghetti the first time I was there because Amy and Gerri told me "Deluca's has the best spaghetti!" Also I noticed that it must be a favorite as most of the waitresses seemed to be serving just that. The bread is very good and warm. They make it back there. I saw people asking for spaghetti sauce to dip. I ate mine with butter. The spaghetti itself was fine but not how I like my sauce. This sauce is very thick and tomatoey...almost sour. I've been told that it is a particular style...from the old country. The rest of the menu has more Italian dishes...prepared in an authentic fashion, I suspect. I guess this explains their popularity amongst the "older," older generation. There has been the same grumpy old man there a few times, I noticed...bossing the waitresses around...it's a bit amusing. They say that he comes there just about everyday. They put up with him because he lost his wife and he is sad. His friend joins him and he is just as bad. I love the SPAGHETTI SAUCE here. We pick it up when in town, it is the only purchased sauce my Italian grandfather would eat when he ran out of his own. It makes my mouth water. We have bought may containers of sauce to freeze and take home when ever possible. We have picked up food for catering a big family dinner from them, picking up broasted chicken and mosticolli... the have wonderful fresh green beans. An experience so bad I created a Yelp account to inform potential customers about this unacceptable service. First id like to say that my family comes here all the time, we've had numerous birthdays, funerals, etc at Delucas. We got carryout when it arrived the fillet that was supposed to have been medium was incredibly rare. I call the restaurant to a snotty "Delucas we're closed" no hello, just a quick way to shoot down a potential customer from ordering I guess. I said that's ok and wanted to speak to a manager. She put me on hold and after a few minutes a rude and presumably an intimidating "Hello." At first, I was confused, I mean a real manager would have greeted me properly and would have told me their name. Not this one. After explaining to the individual on the other end of the phone how unacceptable my fillet was I got no apology, he never asked for my info. When I attempted to tell him the name on the card used for the order, he snapped at me, cut me short and barked at me that I wasn't getting the credit tonight. I was just giving my name on the card associated with my order, I wasn't even expecting them to refund my card over the phone and that I can get my complimentary fillet next time I go there. No apology, just a nasty employee who was trying to get out of there as fast as they could because they were closing early, and still, I have yet to eat... I called back up there to find out who the managers on duty tomorrow are going to be and I get the snotty we're closed greeting as expected, the manager who "assisted" me his name is Robert. Was pleasantly stuffed after coming to Deluca's. We came here for a funeral reception, and I genuinely liked the way it all turned out. They gave us a separate room for our group, and the food was delicious and copious. The pasta, breadsticks, and meatballs were personal favorites, but everything was really delicious. It's served family style, which works out very well in this type of setting. What was even better though was the fact that the family was able to take home all of the leftovers, of which there was plenty. For a place that charges by the person, this is rarely done. Delucas. Not the best Italian and I'm sure not the worst. It's just kind of there. The best part of the Delucas food is the house salad dressing and the bread sticks. Unconfirmed but I think the breadsticks are made from the pizza dough. The pizza here is good. Old fashioned, family made old style pizza. Little peppers is, not super greasy delicious dough. The Italian food part of it is ho-hum. If I don't get pizza, I go with the ravioli. My biggest complaint is the sauce. I'm not a huge fan. It's too heavy. Seems like the noodles are swimming in the sauce and you can't even see the raviolis because they are so far down in the sauce. Another complaint is the service. Very sketchy. You'll either get the rare vey nice server or the more common rude and inattentive. If you want Italian in this area I recommend Antonios. read more

I LOVE this restaurant!!!! Going to this restaurant has been a tradition in my family since before I was born (I am 30 years old), and I have been enjoying the food there for about 26 years. I grew up in Michigan but moved to Atlanta for 8 years and every time I returned to Michigan to visit family, it was a priority to make it to Deluca's. I now live back in Michigan and drive 2 hours round trip just to enjoy their food. The dish that is my family's ultimate favorite is Gnocchi, with meat sauce and meatballs. YUMMMMMM. The entree's come with your choice of coleslaw or salad and the house salad dressing is scrumptious! My brother was in visiting me this weekend and we went to Deluca's for dinner Saturday night. It was just as awesome as ever and the meatball's were the best I had ever tasted them. We also ordered a medium pizza with pepperoni and it was wonderfully flavored and had the smaller pepperoni's- my favorite because it comes from a pepperoni "stick" and is fresh and flavorful. This is the kind of place where you pour your own water into a tiny glass out of a pitcher. It's not very clean. Our table had a big old splash of something or other on the wall next to us. Your salad will come with a plastic cup of dressing. Your pizza will arrive much later after the other entrees. It's not the kind of place where you're going to try to impress a date. I come here for the gnocchi. Most places have gnocchi that's frozen and machine-made. This stuff is pretty good and appears hand-made. The sauce is hit or miss. Sometimes it's delicious, sometimes it tasted burned. Everyone seems to love the pizza. They used to serve good ole hard bread sticks. Now they're fresh and also good. But they still have some old style if you ask. I've had the meatballs, but found them very bland. I've had good service before, and I've had some really cranky service here. This place is a family tradition. I have many childhood memories of whole family (aunt, uncle, grandparents, etc.) get-togethers here. They have a whole section in the back that works perfect for larger parties like ours. The antipasto salad is to-die-for. It is very simple but it is fresh and generous. The house dressing is amazing. I truly think these salads is where I get my love for fresh red onion. Just yum! Any dish you order here will be amazing. Their basic meat sauce and marinara are used for almost everything. It always starts with a good base. That said, I like the mostaccioli and the chicken parm the best. I forgot to mention the bread sticks. Again, so basic but so flavorful. They always have specials, things that are not on their ancient, well-tested menu. I used to live in the neighborhood about 18 yrs ago and haven't been back til today. The place has been kept up nice,I heard there was some issues with the bathroom,but I didn't use it. The soft breadsticks are just as good as I remember and the mostaccioli ala parmigiana was also as good as I rembered. Was craving Italian and Carriera's was closed, hence we go to Deluca'a mid-day on Sunday. Lots of families, some sort of wedding or baby shower going on, very busy and the parking lot showed it! Lots of cars, but luckily they have a big enough parking lot to accommodate their customers. When you walk into Deluca's you can see how busy they are - but, someone should be keeping the place tidy or even a little bit clean. Oh well. Sat down and the waitress was very nice and accommodating. We decided to order some wine for 4 of us; there was a total of 5. We ordered a liter of cab, yum! She brought out the carafe and poured the four of us wine and the other one had pop! I had ordered spaghetti, don't think I would order this again. I'm pretty sure my children have Deluca's salad dressing running through their veins.... Growing up in Dearborn, we were here at least once a month, if not more. Then as an adult, I insisted on a weekly visit while pregnant - keep the crazy lady happy! Now that the kids are a little older, we either bring them along or just get carry-out a few times a month. Antipasto is a must, and pizza or pasta, depending on what you had last time. The pepperoni are the "real" kind, that curl up in the oven and make little grease cups that can be blotted out - or not. The pasta, regardless of the shape will be great as long as you get the meat sauce - in fact I think you could put that sauce on a rubber boot and it would be good. The garlic breadsticks hot out of the oven either with butter or the leftover salad dressing are true happiness. My hubby LOVES the veal parmigiana - which comes with 2 sides - we ususally get both spaghetti and take it home for later, or the kids are plenty happy and full from the side! I am usually too stuffed for dessert, and still taking home half of my pasta. I did have a cannoli once for my mom's birthday dinner, it was OK - but truly I wouldn't bother - use up the space for dinner! Pizza, Pizza, Pizza! Hence the only reason the place is getting 3 stars. Just like Liz I grew up eating at this place and was always forced to go here because my grandpa liked it. I personally hate all of the food here, except for the pizza. The spaghetti sauce is too sweet, the lasagna is made with hard boiled eggs - therefore leaving it rotten tasting, and the warm garlic buns Peggy referred to are nothing compared to the bread at Antonio's. Therefore, I will on rare occassions take my grandfather here because he likes the pork chops and when I'm craving pizza I'll get a Deluca Special to go....but this isn't one of my staples to turn to. And why are people always holding their baby showers & funeral luncheons here? Seriously???? Its dark and dingy...I guess its more fitting for the funeral lunch.
