Visited the DiBella's on Union Road in Cheektowaga, New York today. I ordered a medium Ham & Swiss sub on the new Rye Sub Roll. The roll was very hard and dark colored (similar to pumpernickel?), and it looked like it was overcooked or burned. My normal sub roll is the sesame seed style. The flavor was okay, but definitely not worthy to be included in a class with the famous Dibella's rolls. Thank you for ruining my $15.00 sub. read more

There's one thing that stays in your mind after eating a DiBella's sub: this place is way better than Subway and likely at par with Jersey Mikes. While it's clearly not the best sandwich you'll ever eat it's hard to find something to complain about. The heavy, yet fresh bread gets the job done and the meats definitely don't taste like anything you'd find in a package at the grocery store. It tastes like an sub tasted before poor chains overran us. While the service was meager (the two employees I encountered fought even saying hi) and the atmosphere is uninviting and dark, the subs are priced fair and are a good average sandwich. The portions are impressive, too. Even a half sub is enough for a full meal. Eat a full one and you might not be hungry for the next meal. I tried two subs: the turkey and meatball. I'm still trying to figure out what the meatball was. While the meatballs tasted ok the sauce didn't resemble any true marinara. It was more brownish and yellow and didn't taste like traditional sauce you tend to find on a meatball sub. I took a few bites and trashed it. Fortunately, the turkey sub was much better. I'd order it again without thinking twice. They piled on ample meat and plenty of toppings, both of which tasted great with the fresh bread. At 8:30pm I was the only person in the store so I wasn't able to peek at other subs. Hands down, if you are in the mood for a sub you'll be served well here and leave full. I'm originally from Rochester, so maybe I'm biased. These are my favorite subs. The bread makes them, being classic Italian, but every type I've had there has been good. I'm a big fan of the Godfather, which is capicola, Genoa salami, and spicy ham, but I'll also frequently get the veggie. (Moderation, yo.) They have a great selection of toppings, condiments, and can grill any sub, or make any sub into a salad for the breadless. This is Dibellas. Joe started it in Henrietta, NY. They had long lines of people waiting for subs made with his grandmother's freshly baked bread. The long lines snaked around all to the ingredients used to make your food. The wait was never as long as expected. Dibellas moved to a new location in that same shopping center to handle the demand... and this created more demand, thus longer lines! But those wait times were always reasonable. This was my second ever trip to a DiBella's Subs and I'm thinking it might of been my last. I'll be honest, I just don't get the hype. I stopped in here on Thursday night while driving my dog around and figured it would be a good place to grab a quick bite to eat. This place offers a good variety of hot sandwiches from meatball, roast beef, Philly cheese steak, to of course the Buffalo chicken (which I ended up ordering). I got the middle size for the sandwich which I believe was the 8", a bag of chips, and a beverage which came to around $13.50. Now, I don't mind paying for quality and all of that but $13.50 for the food I got was just not worth it. The sandwich itself was alright, but that's it, it was just alright. The bread was softish, the chicken was good, but something was just missing. Overall, this place just doesn't do it for me. You order a whole sub when you are starving, if you eat the whole thing it feels great short term because it tastes so dam good, then you regret it an hour later when you're comatose lol. Stopped here for lunch right around noon. I haven't been here in about a year and I see some things have been updated. It looks like they are trying to differentiate from other more basic sub places and it looks nice! Seems like they are featuring grilled subs and other hot subs like Buffalo Chicken, Philly Steak, etc. I stuck with the traditional cold sub this time. I like that they come in 3 different sizes. I got the small and that is like your traditional half size. I love then old style feel of the restaurant. I did not eat-in here this time but I have before. It looks clean and orderly. The only thing I would change is that the line up to order sort of crowds near the door to come in. I had to crowd around some guys looking at their cellphones to get out. All the counter staff were friendly and then lady I had was efficient and double checked my order. I opted for the Old Fashioned (turkey, ham, salami) on the multi grain. The bread was excellent. Most places that have multi grain/wheat breads, they either taste like or have the texture of cardboard but this bread was soft and flavorful, but wasn't like white with a little bit of wheat tossed in so it was one shade darker in color. The meat was pretty good but I found the ham a little salty. I like having a good amount of mayo and oil, but it had nearly leaked through the paper wrapper and sub bag. The veggies I got were fresh and plentiful. I made it a combo with a cookie and pop. I picked up the chocolate chip walnut cookie and it was really good and freshly made. They also had newer selections of a white chocolate macadamia nut or oatmeal raisin. The register attendant fills up your pop themselves from a fountain so I am guessing if you are eating in, you can't get a refill before you leave. I live right around the corner, so i finally decided to give it a try. I foolishly ordered the large meatball sub on a sesame seed bun. for $10 and change you get a fairly larger sub, easily two meals. the meatballs were ok, i do like the beef and pork mix. the marinara sauce wasn't good at all and the girl didn't put enough on. i asked for mozzarella cheese. this is where part of the problem lies, the cold cheese slices are put on the bun first, with the warm meatballs onto. to make a good meatball sub, meatballs and sauce go on first, then you put the cheese on top, then you melt it. I'm hoping that the other half tastes better cold at work tomorrow. FYI, Nino's in West Seneca or Hamburg, they have a great meatball sub. read more
