The positives - free parking, good service, and clean. But you came for the food and drink. The margaritas at $9 - $12 were OK but overpriced. No salt rim or an offer to do so. We decided to split the daily special "bacon and jalapeno" guacamole ($12). It was a decent size portion but absolutely no spice/flavor in spite of the additions - maybe don't completely de-seed the jalapeños. Chips were from a bag. We both ordered the chicken tacos. They were actually decent but tortilla was cold and no choice of corn or flour. I requested some hot sauce and was served bottles of Tabasco(!) and Cholla - they don't have time to make their own?? The side dishes were terrible - some sort of slaw with no flavor and their attempt at "pickled vegetables" failed. So as you can tell - very disappointing and no repeat visits on the horizon. Maybe the owner and chef can visit an authentic TexMex spot and get some pointers. I had really high expectations for this place. I was let down. The ceviche was basically a cup of tomato juice with a few cut up pieces of shrimp served with cold flour tortillas. Overpriced Mexican food that lacks authenticity. The photos of the food look amazing, but everything is bland and lacks the true flavors of Mexican cuisine. Everything is cold and soggy. I ordered a burrito in a bowl form, and it was decent. The restaurant itself is nice and roomy, and the service is decent. The food takes a while to come out and they typically bring out one dish at a time. Menu is small. I was looking at it wondering why they're charging $13 for TWO tacos when I can literally get $2-4 authentic tacos at any Mexican spot in Providence. My family stopped in for lunch here on Sunday and had a very nice meal. The queso was yummy and my salad was very flavorful. The street tacos were excellent and the tortillas were soft and chewy. The kids meals were fantastic and both kids finished their plates. Our waitress, Skyla, went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and was great with the kids. It was a quiet winter Sunday, but the vibe seemed like it could really pick up at night along the good sized bar. The music was to my taste and I enjoyed hearing some Gaslight Anthem and solid rock and roll that fit the garage rock atmosphere well. The location is great and view is very beautiful. However, the service was unacceptable and very slow paced for a quiet Sunday afternoon. We had a reservation and were seated at 3:10 PM. Nobody came and took our drink order until 3:40 PM. It's is not currently 4:20 PM and we still have not received our food. We heard many good reviews but this was not what we were expecting, especially with all the hype. In addition, our waitress did not check on us at all after taking our drink and food order which we ordered all together to speed up the process. Looks can be deceiving. The photos I saw from this place even the photos that I took of my own food would make you salivate; however, the food is bland and just not good. I couldn't even finish my food. The chicken on the tacos and in the quesadilla tasted like salty canned chicken, I wanted to give it a chance but I just couldn't eat it. I dont want to leave this review as I love Diegos food but I think management needs help in training their staff. I came in yesterday night for dinner with my husband and daughter. Hostess stand was empty and we saw the "please wait to be seated" sign. We of course waited, and waited and waited. Four employees rushed by us during the first 10 minutes of waiting. Yes they were busy, it was a Saturday....but maybe look in our direction and smile or say someone will be right with you. We stopped and asked one young server "Do we just sit ourselves" and he replied "Im not the hostess" and walked away. Hmm ok. Then another girl who seemed very rushed came running over to the hostess stand. Great! She must be the hostess. Nope she dropped menus there and ran away. We literally were standing on top of the hostess stand and she refused to even look at us or acknowledge our presence. It was almost comical at this point. We were outright ignored. If there was a manager there last night maybe they were hiding? Finally another 5 minutes or so the hostess comes with no "sorry for the wait" or anything. 100 % understandable to be busy on a Saturday and Im sure these kids think they are busting their butts but they are kids and need customer service training! Just a simple smile or glance would have stopped this review. The "its not my job" mentality doesnt work in a restaurant. The team here just needs a lesson on actual teamwork and hospitality. read more

This is a 6 star review, Diego's staff just went above and beyond to ensure we had a great to-go meal. Let me explain, we called in a pick up order which was ready and hot when I arrived. They brought it out to my car immediately. It smelled fantastic the entire ride home, I almost pulled over to eat it in the Second Beach parking lot but my wife and kids were at home waiting for me and the food. Unfortunately one persons order was written down incorrectly, which I found out when I opened the bag. I called Diego's and was ready to drive back to pick up the right item, but the manager offered to drive it out to me. 15 minutes later the manager is in my driveway with the right order and a friendly apology. All of the food was amazing, but that kind of friendly service will keep us coming back! Support your local businesses if you want more of this in your life. read more

Ordered from a brewery right next to Diego's and took over 25 min to get my COLD food, and they forgot an item. We also did not get napkins or silverware. Kinda important when you are at a brewery. We came here for the first time on our first day in Newport. A bunch of places were jammed so we thought we would try here. I had my ESA with me and asked to sit inside and the hostess said she can't seat us inside because no dogs are allowed inside. I offered my doctor's note to her and she shrugged and said you can take it up with management. She was very dismissive and her attitude wasn't appreciated. I was not looking to argue so we just put our names down for outside and waited for about 35 minutes. My ESA sat on my lap the whole time. It was strange because we had no menu and we sat there for about 10 minutes before I went back up to the hostess asking for a menu, then she handed us a plastic thing to scan for the menu. Staff was very friendly and food was tasty, but we went on a Saturday night and felt way too packed then it should have been during COVID. But we went here today and ended up paying $93 (incl tip) for a basic lunch for three people without even ordering any alcohol -- two chicken quesadillas, an order of guacamole and chips, one order of vegan tacos, and three cokes. We've been to Diego's in Newport. I believe this spot has a few different menu options. We shared the pulled pork nachos, which were absolutely delicious!!! I've been craving them ever since. Was very skeptical of a cantina in Rhode Island. The queso and guac left something to be desired, but the brunch and the drinks were good.

Drinks and staff at the bar are solid! The food was blah, I didn't really enjoy my burger at all. I ordered the chips and salsa as an app and the chips tasted like cardboard. I also ordered the wings as an app and they were solid and would recommend trying them. I never send my food back when eating out since I know how hard the staff works and how difficult it is running a restaurant so I kept this to myself and didn't say anything to the staff. I'm sure they would have done their best to fix it. I'm giving an extra star since the service at the bar was great, I didn't get a chance to get their names but the bartender and the manager working that night were both awesome and very friendly. I'll be back next time I'm in the area because of the service, drinks and ambiance. The food was nothing more than average in my experience. My total bill was less than $100 and that was for two apps, two entrees and two drinks which in my opinion is very reasonable for dinner in this area. read more

We came to Diego's for dinner and at the end of the dinner, had our waitress switch over to a bartender, who may have been the most rude, unprofessional, and unaccommodating woman we've ever met. We had asked if there was an ingredient in a cocktail due to an allergy and this woman caused a scene, bitching to her staff members and other customers and wouldn't answer the question. We told her we were only asking because someone in our party had a severe nut allergy and she continued to talk back to us in the most demeaning manner. We visited Diego's Barrio Cantina on Cinco de Mayo, as we were leaving Newport. Located just outside Newport in Middleton, this place is two floors, with two bars, and fun decor. As it was Cinco de Mayo, the wait to be seated was quoted to us at 45 minutes, but it was less than 30 minutes, which is always a pleasant surprise. They took our phone number and texted us when the table was ready. The text would also let you cancel the reservation, if you were able to find a first-come-first-serve seat at one of the bars. We started out with two flavored margaritas. Both were made well, and came in a mason-jar glass. For an appetizer, we snacked on the guacamole, which was served with tortilla chips. The guacamole was very tasty. For dinner, he had quesadilla while I had fish tacos. The food was great, although the serving size was a little on the small side. Nonetheless, both were delicious. The service was very good! Friendly staff, no complaints. The total bill was about $85 before tip. I think a little bit high, but I suppose that is to be expected in the Newport area. read more

Been going to this place since they opened but that stops now. This past week I witnessed a rogue customer flipping out on what appeared to be a hostess at this restaurant. He had his finger in her face threatening her dropping the F bomb all while what appeared to be a manager witnessing the entire ordeal and did absolutely nothing! I can deal with a few mistakes but what I can't deal with is a lack of integrity and it is clear to me that this establishment cares more about the bottom line than they do about protecting their own employees. Came here with bachelorette party. Got seated. Waited 29 minutes until waiter checked in . We also had to keep calling the waiter over - he only checked in on us once . The food was good and the margaritas were delish but the service was bad. I ordered the bodega bowl and they gave me a burrito . So then I had to wait for my bowl . The bowl arrived and it had no beans . I asked for side of beans and they gave it to me . When the bill came they charged my bowl as the burrito which was a dollar more than the bowl . I said I know it's only a dollar but... Like ... I was just getting annoyed because everything was going wrong . The bowl was delish and I liked the flavors a lot . They also didn't give my drink the chili rim and that had to be returned for them to remake it . We would have been happier if they just comped my meal because there were so many small mistakes . And we waited at least an hour for our main meals . We had vegan nachos to start but then waited for so long I overheard this other table who waited for 40 mins for their food. Other tables for their food before us but that's because they got "tacos" but like all our meals were pretty easy . Mussels were terrible and soaked in a ground beef stew. Visited this establishment on opening night and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth everything went considering the overwhelming crowd of locals. Upon entering we were properly greeted by the hostess and not ignored despite how busy she was. She explained as little about the restaurant and nightlife to come. We wandered over to the large L shape bar and were promptly served a delicious blood-orange margarita, which I would highly recommend. We decided to sit at the bar, to skip the wait, and the head bartender was very pleasant. To start we ordered the Queso Fundito and found myself wishing we were given more tortillas due to the large amount of chorizo and cheesy goodness provided. Eating it by the spoonful seemed to do the trick though. As my main course I ordered the Carne Asada. This dish came with a large, very well prepared steak, yucca fries, and seasoned mushrooms. Diego's is awesome! Best Mexican dine in or takeout on the island, super reasonable prices, strong drinks, and everything is delicious every time! There's also lots of vegan and vegetarian options. I've eaten here several times and will keep coming back. Service and quality is consistent, plus the place just has fun vibes. I imagine it's fun later on as a bar, but I've never been there late.
