What the heck happened? I am seeing some nasty reviews for The Diggery. I lived in the area for years and the Diggery Inn saved me on many a blurry, hazy mornings. For many years it was run by a Greek family. Now it is run by a Filipino family. They are super nice and provide good service. But you've got to know what to order at the "Dig." That's what we call it. Yes there are other joints in the Glenview district to eat at these days. But I surely don't like long lines and people bumping into me while I am trying to relax on a Sunday/ Saturday morning. But that's just me. There used to be only the Dig, Pastino's and the Cantina up in this little commercial Glenview zone. Yes this spot is in the Glenview District. I saw another reviewer refer to this as North/ East Oakland. What? Please learn about Oakland. It only takes a little effort. Today there are other restaurants like, Marzano's, Bellanico, and Blackberry Bistro, in this area. But I like to avoid lines and chill. So I usually go to the Dig for breakfast, and get the pancake, french toast combo. or the G-Man. If you want to better coffee, you can grab a cappuccino at Ultimate Grounds Cafe across the street, and bring it with you to the Dig. They don't mind at all. The place has a real laid back vibe. It has a big long table in the middle for communal dining. Plus some tables outside for sunny days, which are abundant in the Glenview. Also there is the Dirty Harry omelette. This is a large hearty omelette with bacon, mushrooms, green onions, and chedder. The only real problem I see with the basic faire here are their biscuits. They need some work for sure. Great location on Park Blvd where you can read the Sunday paper and eat blueberry pancakes. I think what the main attraction is the service, which is very good. But... I did have one complaint, I ordered the eggs benedict and I tasted alot of salt. At first I thought it was the canadian bacon but it was the hollandiase sauce. Who accidently dropped the salt shaker in the sauce? Stick with the different eggs dishes, pancakes and the killer (artery clogging) linguica and you will be OK. Plus some of them have names like "The Dirty Harry," which seems like a silly name for an omelet. I just can't picture Dirty Harry eating an omelet - steak and eggs sound more likely. The service is friendly, and the waitress that works here always remembers us. This place seems to have a lot of people that eat here on a regular basis too, as most who walk through the door are greeted with a cheery, "good to see you again" welcome. The food is simple and delicious. I would describe it as continental comfort food. For breakfast, it's always a toss up between trying something new or going for the usual bacon, eggs, and home style potatoes. Yesterday I had a "California" omelette comprised of egg whites, bacon, spinach, and Swiss cheese served with a side of fruit. It was light and savoury. My grandma ordered the waffles, which were thin, yet fluffy. I like that you add your own butter and syrup to taste. Diggery has the best french fries I've ever tasted, even better than McDonald's! They're thin, crispy, and come in a plethora! For lunch, try the "Tuna Manhattan!" It's a tuna melt with avacado! Sandwiched between two toasted sourdough slices is tuna, melted cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and avacado. The tuna is grilled and has this wonderful crispy crust to it. It comes with a side. If you opt for salad, I would recommend the bleu cheese dressing, which tastes rich delightful. I also like the casual atmosphere. First and last time we will go to this place. We are always in search for a good breakfast spot near home. This is not one of them. Service was poor....they never even came back to refill my ice tea. I ordered an omelet...very under cooked. Home fries were hot but very mushy and bland. My partner ordered pancakes with chicken apple sausage. Ummm...the sausage was nasty tasting and tasted more like turkey with no apples to be found. Biscuits weren't anything special either. Bisquick would have been better by far! Eggs were supposed to be over easy and they were hard enough to use as a frisbie. Sad to say ,,,, we won't be back to this place and are still on the hunt for a good breakfast spot. Just a basic cafe spot with a good selection of breakfast dishes. I tried the Eureka eggs benedict, which were decent, but they need to change whatever muffins are underneath, way too squishy. And the Hollandaise sauce is a bit lacking in flavor. But the eggs are quality with some fresh vegetables. House potatoes were undercooked, which is always disappointing. I used to love this place. I thought they made the best omelettes... afterall, they are "famous." But after my breakfast today, I don't think we'll be returning for awhile. Don't get me wrong, it's not that it was bad, it just wasn't as good as I was expecting, and that can be so disappointing. My breakfast of choice is the Miss Peggy with extra avocado. What I love about the omelettes is that they are not overcooked and hard. The inside is still soft, and the egg and filling melts in your mouth. I always order my breakfast with the fruit instead of the potatoes; you get a huge serving of mixed fresh fruit. One thing to avoid here is the french toast. I've ordered it at my daughter's request and found them to be dry and hard. The staff here is friendly and we've never had to wait for a table. I'm sure we will return again, in a few months I'll be back to give Miss Peggy another try. read more

Finally tried this place after living less than a mile away for nearly 2.5 years. It wasn't worth the wait. Nice neighborhood and attractive/functional interior - with the exception of the incredibly loud hood fan. Service was acceptable but unmemorable. Coffee was memorable for all the wrong reasons...I asked for a replacement cup and it was fresher, but there is no way to mask poor quality coffee. My pancakes were tough. My eggs were OK. Those two things were all that was on my plate. Although I'm not a parsley/orange slice kind of guy, this plate looked mighty sad. Either the serving sizes were too small or the plate was too large - either way, it wasn't very appetizing. We were one of three tables in the place at 10:30am on a Sunday. OK Heres the deal with the Diggery. If you have kids and don't want to spend a ton of money , it's great. The service is sweet and it is very kid friendly. I take my daughter there when I let my dear husband sleep in. She loves it. I just order a cheese omelette for myself and pancakes for her and call it a day. I wanted so badly to like this neighborhood place. It has been years since I ate here, and now I remember why I don't return. As one reviewer pointed out, the breakfast potatoes completely lack any flavor. No salt, no pepper, not even onions. I ordered a cup of decaf and it tasted salty! I understand one way to "refresh" coffee that has been sitting in a pot, is to add a little salt. (Key word being "little".) Still, the coffee tasted old, regardless. I ordered the Eggs Blackstone, but had to ask for tomatoes with it. (I've never seen Eggs Blackstone on any menu without tomatoes.) When it arrived, I noted that the hollandaise sauce was clearly not house made and tasted chemically. I made my husband try it, as a well as the coffee, and he confirmed my suspicions. This is not a fancy place, but a neighborhood staple which has been here for years, with a casual down-home feel. The staff/owners are warm and kind. I really do wish the food were a better quality, as breakfast for two was nearly $50. Even adding a little something to make the dishes more attractive, such as some green like parsley, or a piece of fruit, would help. I love this place. The omelets are superb-- large, huge variety of fresh ingredients, excellent home-fried potatoes and warm biscuits. Salads are great as well, now that they've upgraded their blue cheese dressing. (Used to be kind of runny, but lately has been very good.) They make a decent gyros sandwich too, which is an excellent side dish when ordering an omelet. A couple of my buddies generally order the pancakes and huevos rancheros, which they rave about. The service is excellent! Family-owned and very friendly group of down-to-Earth people. Some of the younger waitresses are very easy on the eyes as well! If you're looking for a turkey burger, this ain't the place to go. (What would prompt someone to order a burger at a breakfast joint anyway? Go to Flipper's in Montclair instead.) But as a breakfast place, it's perfect. Sit at one of the outside tables on a nice spring day, and enjoy your food and laugh at all the trendy fools standing in line for the overrated Blackberry Bistro. Only downsides to Diggery are that it's cash only and parking can be a bit rough. Totally worth it though. read more

We have discovered what Diggery does quite well, besides frying eggs. A double cheeseburger with Swiss surprised me at how good it was for a simple cheap burger. I asked for medium, and it came a little closer to the medium-rare side which was perfect for me. It was juicy and surprisingly tasty. Fresh tomato, lettuce and mayo are standard, along with a raw onion slice which I took off. I took the option of potato salad. Spouse liked it, I didn't. It's Miracle Whip and dill pickle relish, not my favorite combination. Next time I'll get a fruit salad side. I'd rather come here than to Park Burger, in fact. Not up to Flipside's standards, but it'll do when hubby wants breakfast and I don't. read more

Nary has been waiting there for as long as we've been going there (2003), and while we only go a few times a year now...she remembers our order precisely and is warm and sweet. Good food done right! I tire of the pasty cheese, canned eggs, and instant pancakes that have invaded our nation's so-called "diners" in the wake of Kraft and its cohorts. As such, I've always enjoyed throwback restaurants like Palo Alto's Peninsula Creamery for their revival of from-scratch food aesthetics in the breakfast/burger/ sandwich arena. Even so, a place like the Creamery is a theme-park of sorts, and the overblown mythology of times gone by lessens the satisfaction of food done well. That's why I love the Diggery Inn: here is none of that much-marketed nostalgia for ye olde-tyme patty-melt.; instead, at Diggery, it's as if American diner culture never died in the first place. I usually visit this lovely restaurant on weekday afternoons, when it's populated by "regulars" on a first-name basis with the staff. Said staff is friendly, genuine, and deft in feeding people well. The menu covers all the tried, true basics of the breakfast/ burger/ sandwich joint, offering plenty of creative twists without ever over-reaching: while well aware that almost everything is better with a slice of avocado, Diggery never stoops to inane agave-ginger glazes or froo-froo acai reductions. To illustrate Diggery's consistent attention to flavor and detail, let's talk about my personal favorite--the pastrami reuben. Most reubens suffer from runaway kraut--so "sauer" that it's all you taste. Not so at Diggery's, where they add slabs of perfectly caramelized red onion to balance sweet and the bitter, so that the latter does not hijack the sandwich, but heightens it instead. This reuben's solid rye literally overflows with meat cut big and thick, and homemade thousand island and hearty melted swiss top it off just right. Order a green salad, and you get the real deal: deep green romaine, with carrot, onion, and cucumber--all fresh, bright, and full of flavor. Opt instead for potato salad and you'd better be ready for leftovers; this stuff is sublime and you get about a pound of it, couched on another one of those thick, fresh lettuce leaves. I'm addicted to the potato salad and thus have never ordered fries, but I trust that they're good. Diggery's storefront advertises "famous omelettes," and though I haven't tried one, I'd take them at their word; these guys have thoroughly convinced me that they know what they're doing. read more

My family and I used to go to the Diggery Inn occasionally in the early '90's. I remember hauntingly one night, watching two of the staff throw plates at each other while eating a not-very-good dinner. I hadn't been back until... About a month ago, when a friend suggested we go there. The parking gods were with us (it's all street parking in a very busy Glenview neighborhood), and we ate lunch there, which was very good. So, obviously, I'm thinking the Diggery Inn changed hands and/or management. I am so surprised to read the so-so/bad reviews here. My husband and I actually love this place. They make a really good mango milkshake, and I love the home style potatoes. We both like the food and even brought my in-laws for breakfast during a one of their visits to the Bay Area. There are picnic tables inside, but I feel makes it feel more like breakfast at home with family than a typical restaurant, so I like the picnic tables.
