Whoa! Some people are seriously hating on the dim sum factory! I had tried this place out with a groupon a couple years back and went today for lunch with my dad and son. From what I had remembered, the orders are large (typically 8 dumplings per order) but it was tasty. I really was impressed with how clean the restaurant is. I live in south seattle just a stones throw from international district a d the cleanliness is like night and day -day being the dim sum factory. I was shocked that their health rating from the state was just "okay" ...but after thinking about it i have never seen any chinese place actually display their health plaque in international district...*shudder* ANYWAY the food was really good! i am half chinese and grew up on dim sum in LA and NY so i feel like i have some credibility. I had the char siu steamed pork buns, chicken chow fun, and garlic gylon(chinese broccoli). The steamed buns were chewy and had good flavoring with the pork, i really liked that they didn't dye the pork a deep red color like some restaurants do. The chow fun was flavorful and had ample beansprouts which i adore! The gylon was pretty good too, very garlicky and my dad got some plum sauce on the side as well. Big kudos to the attentive staff. They came by every 5 min or so to check up on us and cleared plates and handed us extra napkins without us having to ask! They also were very understanding and kind to my 2 year old who was playing with ice in a cup, drenching his side of the table in water. LIKE i said, i am half chinese and I know how they roll. I Was half expecting some reprimanding or at least some side eye but all the wait staff just smiled and laughed at my son and just gave me extra napkins so i could wipe up the water. I took off one star because i wish you could select smaller portions of the food. The great thing about dim sum is tasting a variety of dishes and that is impossible with the size of the orders they make you buy. My bride and I have been eating dim sum for over 40 years and have eaten at innumerable dim sum eateries. Having read reviews about the Dim Sum Factory, we knew ahead of time that the portions were large and they were! We started with the 5 Mini Baked Bbq Pork Pastries. Nothing "mini" about them! Flaky crust, sweet and moist pork. This is one of my dim sum favorites and these are best I've ever eaten! Next, we had the 8 Pork & Shrimp Shiu Mai and they too were larger than we've eaten in the past and were delicious. We topped that off with the 8 Shrimp Dumplings AKA "har gow" and they too were huge and fresh. We're used to ordering off of "the cart" and typically have multiple steam baskets on our table. No cart here but the service was excellent. We ate prior to the dinner hour and that allowed our two servers to converse with us and they were a delight. Really don't get the negativity in these reviews. Staff always friendly and the dim sum is delicious. Shrimp dumplings are always how I evaluate and theirs are big juicy and delicious. Soup dumplings are not as great as Din Tai Fun but still tasty. Since portions are double normal dim sum (8 dumplings per shumai order) it is hard to eat a big variety without a big group... but dim sum is also one of the best types of food to reheat. This is one of the only places in the area that serves authentic dim sum in Factoria. There is ample parking, short wait time to get seated and food comes out quickly once entered into the app. However, the restaurant is filthy with sticky tables we needed to rewipe with baby wipes and prices are twice those in CID. We ordered pork rolled noodles, bean curd wrapped pork/shrimp, pot stickers, Shanghai noodles and sticky rice wrapped in a yellow noodle wrap. The food was okay however not worth the $80 we paid for something that bordered on mediocrity. The Shanghai noodles were my favorite as the flavors matched my expectations with the freshness of the pork and cabbage. The potstickers were a little soggy and wet not quite crispy with too much ginger. The sticky rice was mushy cooked with way too much water. The rolled noodles with the pork was good however the spareribs pieces too large. The bean curd was decently flavored however instead of a thick gravy it sat in a little pan of water. The finishing touches of the egg tart was hearty with a super flakey crust and thicker custard. Everything tasted fresh but it just seemed there was no finesse compared to what we find in the CID. Also we noted that the older couple next to us sat and waited and waited for their food only to find out they did not hit submit order. Read (past tense) a few reviews prior to posting this one. Can't comment on the customer service, as I went on a Wednesday afternoon when neither a lunch or dinner rush would be expected. Seated right away and served hot tea and iced water. Place is very clean and large enough to accommodate quite a few patrons. You need to scan the QR code to see the menu (not my favorite, since I like the larger pictures and descriptions on a menu). Prices seemed above average for dim sum; attribute that to inflation, I guess. Okay anyway, for healthier fare (steamed versus fried?) Quality of the food was a letdown, however. Maybe since I had expectations of seeing kitchen staff hand rolling and filling the dim sum, a la Din Tai Fung or the "holes in the wall" in International District, I thought the same would be true here. Instead, I got pretty bland probably mass produced and flash frozen then quickly steamed dumplings resembling those in the "Asian" section of the grocers' freezer. Really disappointed in the sticky rice buns with sausage - it was basically rice cooked with fat and two miniscule cubes of sausage stuffed into a rice flour wrap. Quick update: food is still stellar. I've tried several dinner dishes like wonton mein, stirfried green beans, and deep fried calamari and they're delicious! The wonton mein especially is a star - the noodles are super chewy and thin like in Hong Kong! Knocking off a star since my last review because the dim sum comes out frequently slightly warm (I like my dumplings hot and steaming!) and for the mixed bag of customer service. The food is always great here and the service comes quick. The fact that it's in a smaller mall that doesn't get much foot traffic means it's not usually crowded. Good news for everyone else that ventures out this way. Our server, Kevin, was entertaining and made sure to take care of us by replenishing our drinks and getting our leftover to go. Pretty average dim sum. Not my favorite but still a really good place to go with larger groups because of spacious seating and large portions. Personally I like the smaller traditional portions (4 shumai's rather than the 8 that they serve) so I can try more dishes, but this has its perks too. The fried taro ball was super delicious though so crispy and flakey on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The traditional dimsum dishes like shumai and chicken feet is pretty normal. They could use significantly better signage, as others after us had to be guided as well. Vaccine cards, table, ok. Food: taste is meh. Sticky rice has sand or something crunchy in there that's not tasty. Portions are large. Flavors are muted. Pork spare ribs fattie & could have used another 15min to render the fat... unfortunate. Service: In my experience, tasty Asian food comes with a good helping of mediocre service. It's definitely mediocre. They have servers working the kitchen out window, but not very many directly servicing customer needs. They tack on 15% service charge for large parties.... We arrived around 11:15 -- for a Sunday it wasn't too busy yet, and we were seated right away. They have a lot on their menu other than dim sum, including many noodle dishes. This isn't your typical dim sum place because there aren't dim sum carts, and the portion sizes are doubled (an order of shao mai comes with eight pieces) compared to normal places. The food was good. It came out super duper hot (some dishes possibly cooked to order?). I liked the bean curd the best. This is especially terrible if you have a big group as there are a limited number of sections that can accommodate a larger party. I live close by and go here frequently. I prefer it much better than going to the ID or Top Gun down the street. You don't have to look for parking and be crammed for seating. The food and service isn't perfect, but if you don't want to deal with parking, crowd, noise and get so crammed you can't pull out your seat, this place is perfect. First, be patient with the workers. They are often understaffed. Talk to them like a person and take it easy. Say hi and make chit chat. We are so focused on demanding to "be served" now. If you don't have time to relax and wait, this may not be the best choice. Second, they are flexible. You can call in advance to order and also ask them for "less oil, salt". Third, orders are huge, not like other dim sum places so order accordingly or expect to bring food home. Yes it's more expensive but that's also because of their portion size. Think 20 people in a private backroom dining area that requires an additional staff member, or a roped off area that is given specific attention from a specific staff member dedicated to a group. Restaurant staff have to earn tips - it is not part of entitled compensation. Whoever the business owner at Dim Sum Factor, please read this review and reconsider your business process / practice on this. Otherwise, I think the food and service was pretty reasonable. The food tasted great and given indexing on typical Chinese restaurants, I thought the service was better than what people are writing reviews on. As I've written before, Asian style restaurants / establishments come from different expectations regarding service and tipping. To me, when I go to a Chinese restaurant and the service is "transactional", then I don't mind giving a tip less than 12-15%. Less service = less tip. At any rate, until this place changes their mandatory tip policy, I don't feel the need to go here again. Pricing was better, more "on point" but after we had ordered, I wondered why we hadn't just gone to Panda Express and paid less for more. The menu is massive though and there was a lot of parking, so I'll give them that. I ordered the garlic spicy chicken and it was a little salty (a smidge too much soy) but super spicy and garlicky (so pretty good). My friends ordered the sweet and sour chicken and Szechuan green beans. The chicken was fine, the sauce was super thick, little too much breading/flour on the chicken though. It was ok the first time we were there, and that's how we got the groupon, which started our misery.. We came in for our third visit today and we ordered honey walnut prawns and 2 other dishes. The waitress asked me what portion I want: lunch or dinner, I said lunch. Then she said it's a very small portion, but I said it's fine. Later when we were paying, I found out it's the dinner portion. So the first waitress who served us was poorly trained because she didn't inform us when she found out there's only dinner portion for the prawn today. And the waiter is also poorly trained because he didn't know how to resolve that issue. He'd be in a much worse shape if I went there by myself -.-. The touch free ordering system is so modern and I really enjoyed it, so wonderful for saving time in getting your order in. The sever still comes to see if you have any questions on dishes or need help ordering. The food came out prompt hot, and fresh. The jellyfish was perfectly seasoned and crunchy and refreshing. So we had about 27 people in for dinner! Celebrating a birthday of course. We ordered everything across the menu. Hopefully you'll be able to see them in the pictures I posted. What I can say is this menu is large and exhaustive, you will take a lot of time trying to figure out what you want to eat because there's so many options to choose from. We got the coolest server tonight. He had a wicked comb over and he was super awesome. He actually made our dining experience pretty fun, every time he came by he would say "hello everybody" as if it was the first time he had seen us all night. We could tell he was a pretty happy guy to begin with, and he enjoyed doing what he was doing. The food is really good and I especially enjoyed the dumplings that contain the soup inside, mmm they were so good! I also love the chow mein and the ma pao tofu. I am a ma pao tofu freak. I went there with my friend from Alaska at 5:00pm, we ordered food and drinks which were good, not many guested there and I had to say most of the tables were empty, we finished most of the foods by 7pm and we drink teas, all of a sudden the waiter came to our table and collected our tea pot and cup, my my asked him why, he started to say we are ready to close, actually it's 7 pm and guests on other tables just started, he just tried to let us leave earlier, no restaurant is close at 7pm on Friday.
