I've been missing Harbor City since they closed in the CID. Hubby and I made a jaunt to my old stomping grounds in Beacon Hill to check out Dim Sum House. What drew me in were the shrimp toast and the shrimp egg rolls, which were good! The baked bbq pork bun and football's are huge! The fun guo (teochew dumpling) was flavorful. The pork puff pastry (char siu sou) was a little too dense for our taste. This place has big portions and good flavor, which made me happy that this is a good fill-in for the departed Harbor City in Seattle. I've been coming to Dim Sum House in Beacon Hill because it's convenient when visiting family. The food is okay, though not as strong as some spots in the International District. Unfortunately, my recent experience was very disappointing. This was a to-go order totaling about $60. When I got home, I realized my wonton noodle portion was missing (only the broth was in the bag). I returned to the restaurant right away, but the woman who helped me, who appeared to be the owner or part of management, insisted that I already had it and even suggested that I had eaten it and came back for more. That accusation was embarrassing and unnecessary. Eventually, I was given the missing portion, but the situation could have been handled calmly and professionally from the START. I have never been so embarrassed around people eating and listening to our argument, and treated like a homeless person demanding for food. A simple apology and QUICK resolution would have gone a long way. Customer service and respect matter just as much as the food. read more

Came here with a party of six on a Saturday afternoon and got seated right away. We initially sat at a smaller table (2x3 table) but once the party that sat at the round table left, they offered for us to move over there, which was nice since the original table was pretty tight. The dim sum was really good. My favorites were the Teochew dumplings and shumai. I wasn't really a fan of the congee though. Tea was good too. Service was meh. They took forever to take our order and it took a very long time to get our sakes. But it was really busy that day and they were a lot of to go orders. Sometimes, it pays to take a chance... My wife and I had a hankering for congee, and we didn't want to schlep all the way to Chinatown and deal with the parking hassles. My AI suggested this place, and we thought we'd give it a whack. From the outside, this place doesn't look very impressive, but as you know, you shouldn't always judge a book by its cover, and sometimes those 'holes in the wall' can have some pretty good food. THE ROSES: While it has no dedicated parking lot, DSH is located on a part of Beacon Avenue that's a boulevard with parking in the middle. The prices are reasonable, the servings are generous, and the food is actually pretty good! For a small restaurant and small kitchen, the menu is remarkably broad and comprehensive with classic Cantonese cuisine. It is clear that this place is popular with the local community, because as we got closer to the lunch hour, it got real busy with local families and groups! It appears to also do a fairly brisk takeaway business. The service, while a bit brusque, was efficient and thorough. THE THORNS: From the outside, this place honestly doesn't look that promising. It definitely has a 'hole-in-the-wall' look to it. This isn't the place you'd take someone you wanted to impress (unless they're adventurous and dedicated foodies like you!). It doesn't help that the food safety placard on the door indicates DSH could only eke out an 'Okay' rating (the lowest rating you can get and still stay open) doesn't exactly boost one's confidence. Still, I've eaten in places a lot more grotty than this, and outside of the venue looking quite old and 'well-loved', the spaces I saw certainly looked clean enough. The dining room is a bit on the small side, and when it's busy in here, it can get quite loud. WHY FOUR STARS: Yes, the place *looks* like a pit, but when it comes to the food, Dim Sum House delivers the goods! For me, the food is foremost, so four stars for these guys. THE VERDICT: The adage, 'You can't judge a book by its cover' is no more true than here. If atmosphere and being in an Asian restaurant where you want to 'See and be seen' is important to you, I suppose you can always go to Chef Morimoto's Momosan in Chinatown, but for me, when I go to a Chinese restaurant, find it full, and note that I'm the only white guy there, I'm fairly sure I'm in for some decent chow. Great dim sum steamed to order right on Beacon Hill. Lots of variety, from seafood fishes( I saw a family order spot prawns & lobster in ginger scallion sauce) right beside us as we were having dim sum around 11:30 AM on a Sunday. They are under new ownership but I'm unsure when that happened. I haven't been to Dim Sum House for several years due to poor service...but the ladies that work there now are very attentive & thorough. This was a pleasant surprise to know that I Dim Sum House is definitely back in my rotation. Everything we had was tasty & freshly made, except for the baked items which are in a big case...that's heated I believe. The dining room Is small with 2 large banquet tables on one side and about 6-8 2 & 4 top tables on the other side. We waited about 10 minutes for a table for 4 opened up but it was quick & worth it!. This little gem is the perfect neighborhood dim sum stop. I used to live in Washington and now reside in Arizona, so when I came home for a visit, my daughter brought us here. The place may be small, but it's packed with flavor. There's no ordering from carts--everything is ordered directly from the menu, which I actually loved. This place is around since I was a kid and I am in my late 40's! We absolutely LOVE this neighborhood mom and pop dim sum cafe. Park in the public island parking lot and use the crosswalk. They serve way more than just dim sum there's a huge separate menu for non dim sum Chinese/szechuan classics. We tend to gravitate towards their mouth watering dim sum. They have a picture menu which makes ordering easy. It's not push cart style which is ok so it comes out hot and fresh. The dining area is small but we have never had to wait to dine in. If there's no small tables left for small parties, people sometimes just share a big table. They do a lot of take outs for locals. If I live close by, I would definitely frequent this place. Memorable must haves are their Dan Dan noodles; it's a healthy yet addicting dish. It's a milder version we love the use of cucumber and napa cabbage to balance out the gently creamy peanuty noodle dish. Stir/mix up then serve. Highly recommend for vegans. The waitress lady tells us it's one of their top sellers. You get a good size bowl for $12.95! Other favorites are their pork/shrimp shiu mai, fried shrimp egg rolls (oh yes!), baked bbq buns (they run out fast), garlic green beans (ask to make it Szechuan spicy- it's even better than ones at DTF), any of their steamed dumplings with that amazing dough like ha gow shrimp dumplings, scallop dumplings, vegetarian dumpling, pan fried daikon radish cake. My hubby really like the chili oil won tons but it's really not that spicy. If you like coconut, the "cocktail bun" or coconut bun in the deli case is sure loaded with coconut! There is a plethora of other baked or fried goodies in the deli case like sesame balls, Bo lo bau (pineapple bun-but it's not made with pineapple), the fried football shaped meat dumpling call hom sui gok, hot dog bun etc. I wish I can eat like I was a teenager! They even have congee if you are in the mood for that and it's actually good. I can tell all the other dim sum that we have not tried is legit based on the pics. Been going to dim sum all my life and the dim sum chefs back there know their stuff. Good size. What's not to love. Also, you get a free pot of hot tea to wash everything down. What a turnaround. I had been here many years ago and was not a fan. The memory of them heating a baked bao in the microwave was not a good sign. Fast forward several years and this place rates right up there with the fancier joints. I've usually been lucky to find a parking spot on the Beacon Ave median. Today's to-go order was packed with care. Won tons, noodles and greens packed separately from the soup and a piece of cardboard at the bottom to stabilize everything. Steamed bao good, fried football was crispy, chewy and full of pork, fun gor wrapper and crimp very good and not tough. I intended to get the pan fried yellow triangle shrimp and chive dumpling, but got the round, sesame topped version. Held the heat all the way across the WS Bridge and very juicy. I try to remind everyone, the space is small so it can pack out quickly, unless I have lots of time I often order to go so I can leisurely eat at home. We came when it opened on a weekend, and there was a dirty tub of dishes sitting in the dining area from the night before. The worst is that there was a giant cockroach scurrying back and forth between our table and the table in front of us in broad daylight. If these pests are not afraid of humans or light, there's a serious cleanliness issue. We had only had a couple bites of food which was actually pretty good but got up and paid our bill quickly and left as soon as we noticed. Tried this place in the late afternoon and got seated immediately Good service, We got poured chrysanthemum tea and was greeted in Cantonese. We ordered 3 dishes and they came relatively fast. The har gao was delicious, chicken feet had a different taste than I'm used to but was good and fresh. The rice roll was not that flavorful so my least favorite of the bunch. Basically it has all the meats stir fried up with rice and veggies. The chicken curry taste like any other chicken curry I've had at any Chinese restaurant in Seattle. Hard to mess up and hard to dislike. Solid. Restaurant is basically a mom and pop restaurant, so service is minimal. You have your order taken and get your food when it's ready. Wave down the service whenever you need anything as best as you can. It isn't hard though since the restaurant is pretty small and business is moderate with just a couple other customers. We always pass by this place and one day decided to get shrimp fried rice. I ordered take out and when we got home we noticed something black when opening the container. I looked closely and it had LEGS!! It was a cockroach in our food. I don't know how a business can serve their customers this!! Truly disgusting and definitely lost my appetite. I have no idea why this place has such a low rating?! Needed to stop for lunch and decided to come here even though it only had 3.5 stars. The menu pricing and options looked decent. We were quickly sat down, they have a typical Chinese food menu with some in dim sum or full size. We ordered the bbq pork rice roll, vegetable fried rice, garlic green beans and boba. Also a good tip: they have a full boba menu!!! The food came out super fast, the bbq pork roll was a perfect portion with amazing flavoring. The garlic green beans has so much good minced garlic and seasoned perfectly; it barely had any oil compared to other Chinese food places. The vegetable fried rice had so many veggies and egg in it, everything was just piled on and was so good! I'm so happy that they didn't skimp out on veggies! The boba was so surprising. I wasn't expecting much as usually when a restaurant has boba it's all creamer and powder and mushy soggy boba but this place wasn't! The boba was as good as the best boba shops around. The texture was perfect and the flavoring was the liquid kind which tasted so good! I really hope someone sees this review and considers stopping by at the restaurant because it is completely worth it. My family and I needed a new dim sum spot ever since Joy Palace went under new management so we decided to try here. It's a small shop but was very clean and was PACKED for Saturday lunch! I think we came at the right time to snag a table. There's only 6 or 8 tables that seat 4 people and 2 big ones that have a lazy Susan. A lot of people did takeout. Servers weren't very attentive or talkative. My dad tried flagging them down a few times when they'd pass by to order but they'd ignore him and I would have to get up to the front counter or right next to a worker. A little discouraging ngl since I'm a quiet introvert but don't they say bad service is a sign for good food at a Chinese/Asian restaurant?! My fav worker was this guy with short hair and a black T-shirt who was probably the nicest. The food did take awhile to come out and came out in waves. The food was very delicious and everything was very hot, like as if made to order. My fav items were the salt and pepper squid, salty lava egg buns, and stuffed tofu. The fried shrimp balls and shrimp rolls were also great and my parents liked the chicken feet. Only item I didn't love was the siu mai, as I felt it was heavy on the pork and could've used shrimp. There's a big variety of items they have and their dim sum menu has photos of each item, so it's so helpful if you've never been to dim sum before or if you don't know the name of certain dishes! My sister ordered the Hong Kong style milk tea which was pleasantly flavored. I thought for a dim sum place it would be average or maybe even bad, but it had good tea flavor and the tapioca pearls were soft. A cup was only $4 and toppings were 50 cents. I'd love to come back and get a different milk tea flavor to really assess their drinks. All in all, Dim Sum House will be our new spot for dim sum for the foreseeable future. read more

This small, unassuming restaurant tucked along a busy street shouldn't be overlooked: there's some great cooking going on inside. The value proposition here is strong. Decent place to get your dimsum fix, nothing too spectacular but quite comparable with establishments from International district/Chinatown area. Food that I liked, SiuMai and the HaGao, they're the dimsum staple and they executed quite well. Food that worth trying but not quiet well executed, the shrimp toast, I haven't seen this dish being offered in other area of Seattle, although it came out too greasy for my liking when I tried it. Food that seems popular that I think we should avoid, congee, too plain and no thrilled for $13.
