I sat inside, had a different server on a busy night and felt unappreciated, to be honest. The pace was frenetic with servers and bussers rushing around throughout the restaurant. My server was OK, but I don't think she cared one way or another about my experience as a patron and it showed. Servers really can make a big difference in dining experiences. I know that it's not an easy job, but something to think about for any servers reading reviews. FYI - the reserved signs on the outdoor tables simply mean that you need to see the hostess. The tables are not actually reserved. They really should use different wording because I almost kept walking, thinking that all the outside tables were taken.

The tomatoes and roasted peppers gave the dish a deep, slightly sweet and savory base, while the harissa added a warm, smoky heat that slowly built with each bite. The garbanzo beans were soft and tender, adding this really nice texture. And the sourdough toast was perfect for this. I could scoop up the sauce, egg yolk, beans, and peppers all in one bite. When you walk into Diner Grill at any point during a 24-hour period, you will meet Kenny. Kenny is the chef, THE ONLY CHEF FOR A 24-HOUR DINER!! (Occasionally, there is another guy... I think Kenny just wants a break every couple days to slam some beers, smoke a pack of Reds, and throw darts in his basement, you know, man stuff). After you mosey up to the segregation-era diner stools and have a seat, watch Kenny touch raw potato, raw beef, raw bacon, pickles, raw beef, bun, raw beef, raw potato, toast, raw... I could go on for days, literally. You know what Kenny never touches? Soap or water. Do I care? Absolutely not. The food here is so good that he could touch a festering sore just so long as I get to indulge in some double cheeseburgers. EVERYTHING about Diner Grill is un-appetizing, except the food, which more than makes up for the countless health violations being committed... in my eyes at least. Diner Grill is straight-up old-school Chicago--no frills, just solid grub and a vibe that feels like home. We swung by for brunch and, as always, had to get the Breakfast Burrito--it's our go-to and never misses. Pork, ham, melty cheese, pickles--pressed to perfection. Also grabbed the Cubano. Service was fast and friendly, and the cook was cracking jokes behind the counter like it was a stand-up set. I always loved eating here with my friends and ordering the "slinger" after a long night of professional drinking at The Holiday. This authentic old style diner is a real treat and a rarity since the demise of the old Steak and Egger Empire. The counterman efficiently cooks your meal and holds an entertaining conversation at the same time.
