This place needs a refresh. I'm not sure how the owners could justify not keeping things like upholstery fixed. It's ghetto. Yes, they are trying for southern charm but the basics cannot be overlooked. The additional charges for things is ridiculous. When I walked in the door, it wasn't a hello, I was greated with do you know our polices. See yellow sign in photos. Charges, for evrything. Look at the menu, extra charges for small items. I tried to order the chicken dinner and was told they do not cook it on Sundays. Only wings on Sunday? WHAT? Isn't Sundays when people come for a family dinner? The service level was nice at the table, so I had no problem with the mandatory 18% added to the bill. She was polite and nice and earned her tip. I actually gave her additional money. I have been going to Dixie's for over 10 years and they never disappoint. From the time they were in the plaza to their most recent location. The food never fails i always get their jerk chicken with Mac and cheese and they have the best Mac and cheese to this day. The blue lagoon drink is always a fav. They have added 18% gratuity since Covid but I'll rather pay 18% at a restaurant that has great food and good portions vs a place that charges for every little thing and all of their food is overpriced. I never had an issue with any waiter/ waitress they always have been helpful and accommodating if need be. Everyone i have brought here loved it as well. read more

I stopped in to have a late lunch with my brother. I have passed by here many times and kept saying I wanted to try. Well, I finally did! It was a little crowded, but it was what I expected for a Sunday. We did not wait long and were seated in a cozy little space. We were seated in the area where Jordan was our server, and she was a ball of joy!!!! She recommended drinks and entrees, as we stated we had not been here before. I started with a drink and those wonderful Johnny cakes. The drink Swamp Water, which Jordan recommended to us, and it was soooo good, and the Johnny Cakes were hot and good. I ordered the fried green tomatoes and catfish strips, soooooo good. But what made me feel like I was back in New Orleans was the Seafood Pasta!!!!! I fell in love with this pasta!! I can't wait to come back and enjoy other options, as Cajun is one of my favorite foods. I plan to go back when I can hang out with Jordan again. But I will attempt to come at any time of the day. I used to go to the Hyde Park location many moons ago and knew this place was here but never felt compelled to visit when they moved from the first Torrence location. (Or is this a 2nd?). Anywho I was feeling nostalgic and ordered all of my old favorites, catfish, Mac n cheese, greens, black eyed peas, red beans and rice, pecan pie and I tried the peach cobbler. They did not pack my greens and I assume the sweet potato I got instead was because they were out of greens. I didn't enjoy them. They were the mushy ones. The Mac n cheese had an overpowering meat taste and was too salty to really enjoy. It had a good base but meh. It was a shell of the old flavors but it was still good. Probably more enjoyable straight out of the kitchen and I took it to go. Service was a little disappointing. I entered right behind a large group and was likely mistaken as one of them. Instead I waited at the desk for several minutes after the party was sat and was still waiting to be tended to and there was no signage behind waiting to be seated. Finally the hostess came back and said oh you have to pick those up at the bar. I didn't even know they had a bar. A sign for take out orders would be nice. The outside door for carry out said exit only so. It was just a slight inconvenience but I'm a fan of efficiency and excellent service. The inside looked like the old HP location but with that Cracker Barrel renovation feel. Lol. Another patron was also commenting on how the decor seemed...off. I didn't really look around. It gave N'awlins, bayou, gators, yadda yadda. Placing the order over the phone was easy peasy. Lady was clear, patient, and upbeat. The desserts were cold and underwhelming. I make better at home but most restaurants are cutting corners for time/money. There's no more fresh cream with the pecan pie and their peach cobbler doesn't have a bottom crust. We should have left when we walked in and was told an 18% gratuity would be added to your bill and a 3% charge if you paid with a credit card. We should have left. We ordered our food and NONE of the food had any seasoning. How do you mess up a hamburger. My greens, mac& Cheese and fish were all bland. Back when Dixie Kitchen was in Hyde Park and closer to 170th & Torrence Avenue, my family introduced me to this Cajun/Soul Food restaurant. Now the 179th & Torrence location survives. The host/hostess explains the 'rules of engagement' which includes: 18% gratuity on all checks; no split checks; additional charge for debit cards (only chip cards are accepted). Once you agree, you're seated and promptly served. I loved the catfish filet (delightfully seasoned)and mashed sweet potatoes. The collard greens tasted a little gritty (in my opinion.) The sweet potato pie slice was "okay" cold, no whipped cream, without the spices I remember. read more

Had lunch with a friend; the food was decent. Ambiance was fine, not many people. Boxed my leftovers; as I take a bite of red beans and rice the next day, there is a long back hair in my mouth! I brought my elderly mother to dixie kitchen on a sunday, we ordered a catfish dinner and a pink lemonade drink. When we were finished eating, ready to leave. My mother had not touched her drink. I asked the waiter, could he get us a to go cup for her drink. He said that was against policy rules. And that she would have to drink it there. It was not like we were trying to get a refill. This was her first drink. So I had him to remove the drink from the bill. Because why should I pay for a drink that hasn't been touched, and we can't get it to go. I haven't been here in a while, and I remember the restaurant being at a different location because it looked different from years ago. I will have to say that this location is much nicer looking. Another thing that changed is the fees they charge to dine in. I don't remember all the charges, but fees include 18% gratuity for any size party, & credit card usage. I also don't remember our waitress's name, but she was sweet and would come by every now and then to see how we were doing or if we needed anything else. One of my friends ordered the Georgia Peach Colada, and my other friend ordered the Southern Paradise. Both liked their drinks. Two of my friends ordered the baby catfish with mac-n-cheese and collard greens. Another friend ordered salmon pasta, and I ordered seafood cakes with mac-n-cheese and coleslaw. For dessert, we had homemade Southern peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. We all loved what we ordered. I also ordered a gumbo bowl to go for hubby, and he loved it. read more

The food was really good. I will return. The Johnny Cakes, well they could probably prepare them fresh. They tasted as though they had been sitting for a minute. This time the Fried Green Tomatoes were cooked to perfection. In the past, I've purchased them out of season and they were not that great, cut way too thick. For the price they should give you the whole tomato. I generally get 5-6 slices (at home) out of my tomato. We ordered (2) Catfish Dinners, and (1) 4 piece Fried Chicken. I will return. I paid the bill (approximately $76.00) not realizing that a 18% gratuity was included on the original bill of $68.00 without tax. I planned to tip the waitress $20.00. I have a daughter who works in a restaurant and hear the stories of people not tipping, etc. When I realized this error, I went looking for her. Her coworkers told me she'd be out. She never returned. I wanted to wait, but my brother encouraged us to leave and just let her have the extra money. He paid me the paid me the money I lost. I called back and spoke with an unfriendly female who stated the hostess tells everyone before seating that Gratuity is included and that there are no separate bills. The Hostess did tell us there were no separate bills prior to seating us. I confirmed with my family members that she didn't share the Gratuity portion. Because I paid cash there was nothing that could be done. I'm thinking this is so deceitful to customers. After speaking with my daughter who works in this industry, she confirmed that they don't tell customers this. It is a way for the waitress to make better tips. We were a huge party of 16 and we thankfully were seated very quickly and the manager was very kind explaining why we were seated first to the other patrons waiting. The food came very quickly and everything was fresh and delicious and the portions were wonderful! I didn't know they don't serve fried chicken on Sundays but there were plenty of other things to choose from. My meal was phenomenal but the gentleman who sat across from me said the Mac and cheese needed some doctoring up but overall he loved the meal. They also include a gratuity of 15% without telling you, I noticed after I had place a gratuity on the table. 4. What you order off the menu is $1 more on you receipt. I went last Friday. They had no more baby catfish, greens had no seasoning and wasn't cooked all the way through, mac and cheese taste like it came from the box, spaghetti was too watery, no more fried oysters, even had to pay extra for tarter sauce to go with fish filets, only thing was good was the bourbon drink. Some of the waiters/waitresses are amazing. Food is good. But the managerial staff are horrible. Because of them and the rules of no hot water given at the table, no take out cups for unfinished drinks ( lemonades that are overpriced) and tipping is required no matter how they treat you is completely unacceptable. The host at the front...very awkward. He didn't tell us anything besides hi, but we waited for a good 10-15 minutes. No updates, no telling us it was a wait, he just looked at us lmao. Next they were short staffed so I gave our server grace. He was deff on it so I will say the service was good. There were a lot of tables and he was able to hold it down. I ordered the peach wings which I used to always get. They still buss. The macaroni was good and everybody in my party liked their food. Only recommendation would be to add music because it was just very dead inside when I came in particular and add someone more friendly to the front. My First time dining at Dixie Kitchen in Lansing IL The Hostess informed our party of their dining policies, only one check and one form of payment per table, eighteen percent gratuity is added to all checks and three point two percent fee is charged for all card payments. With all this being explained to our dining party I expected my dining experience at minimum to meet my expectations and hopefully to exceed my expectations and I would become a repeat patron of this restaurant in the future. I must say I will never dine her again for several reasons Our waitress took our order and went ghost (we didn't see her again for more than 25 minutes.)When she returned to our table, only brought on third of our appetizers. We waited again more than 20 minutes and asked her what happen to our other appetizers, she gave us a look she was puzzled and walked away. I requested to speak with the manager, the manager came to our table and I explained our dissatisfaction with our waitress. The manager response was in support of her staff not caring how we felt as customers or the inadequate service we were experiencing. I don't know if this place is under new management now or what, but the service has gone in the tank. The server was noticeably inattentive, never asking if we needed anything or refilling drinks. The check came, and we found out why. There was an 18% percent gratuity and a 3.5% card fee already included in the bill. When we asked management, she fed us a line of bull about the gratuity being added to all tables no matter the size of the party. There were only 4 of us. I understand that the economy is hitting everyone, but at least give me the choice. There were several options in the area with better service and no bs surprise fees.
