I love the food at Dixie Kitchen! I've been a fan since I first ate at their restaurant in Hyde Park. I wish they would open a new one in the city again, which would be awesome. The one downfall, is that this location is a cash only establishment and that kind of sucks. The catfish is always fresh and hot.The fried green tomatoes are wonderful with just the right amount of spice, and the peach glazed wings are so yummy. My first time coming to the new location. Usually the food is very good, although the service from time to time was questionable. The service at the new restaurant is waaaay better however my dish was a thumbs down. I ordered the large Red Beans and rice/no meat. This dish tastes like it came straight from a can, no flavor at all. I spoke with the manager and explained my dissatisfaction and asked if anything could be done. She told me no, we do not comp any food, it is written on the menu. So i had to pay for food that i had 4 spoonfuls of because of a strict "policy" they have according to management. No offer to provide a side or anything just pay for food that is flavorless. I failed to mention that the waiter said it would be better if you added the meat, it would give the beans flavor. I'm a vegetarian so I can't comment much on their entrees (hence the 4 stars), but the place smells delicious, the servers are always very nice, and the atmosphere is warm. Visited twice in one week. The food is that good. Each member of our party ordered different food each time and was just as blow away. I can endorse the Gumbo, Jambalaya, fried chicken, chicken wings, Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and greens. My wife commented that the red beans and rice were a little bland, so no glowing review there, but no place is perfect. Honestly, the only reason I didn't throw 5 stars their way is that the service is heavily on the slow side. Not bad or incompetent; just slow. If the servers put a bit more pep in their step and got those jonnycakes out faster (a welcome deviation from biscuits or bread), I wouldn't be able to say a bad word about the place. This place is a must stop! If this is your first time stopping in don't let the exterior deter you, it's a pure surprise on the inside! You almost forget where you are. Between the food, music and atmosphere you feel like you've left the hustle and bustle of Chicagoland for the slow roll of the south. Could have stayed and listened to the music all day! The food and service was excellent as well. We had the appetizer sampler plate and the catfish strips were outstanding. We ordered the fried chicken which was incredibly moist without the grease typically associated with it. The flavor was also very good. We also had the Southern sampler plate and a Po'boy shrimp. Went here with my granny, great aunt, & 3 month old. Hostess was VERY RUDE, she seemed over wheeled between the phone & the arriving guests. She literally led us to our table then immediately walked off while on the cordless phone. We arrived around 11:35am, so just around lunch. Our waiter took about 20 minutes to acknowledge us. We requested water, which didn't arrive til the very end once my aunt reminded him. The sweet potatoes were trash. They tasted like canned sweet potatoes, plus they were mashed. The fish was delicious, bartered perfectly. The greens had way too many tens, but were seasoned pretty good. The mac & cheese tastes like it had sat out too long, or they used old cheese. After asking the cashier if the food can be fixed she was given an ultimatum to leave or have the police called. Not sure if it's a Racial issue or if the cashier was having a bad day. This place was an overall good eat. The food was phenomenal to say the least. The tasty fried chicken was perfect blended with juicy gravy and delicious mushrooms. That being said, the service wasn't as good. While the waiter was very friendly, we often were left waiting for someone to refill our drinks or something else. Still, the waiter was good and even got us sauce when he overheard us say something about needing some (we didn't ask directly). All in all, Dixie's is a good place to eat some amazing southern food. The decor is like Louisiana Applebee's - in a good way. Really fun crap hanging on the walls, so if you're there with someone boring, you can at least look at it. The food is wonderful, and there's a lot of it! I have gotten several different entrees, but I think my favorite is some spicy salmon pasta thing. Definitely makes two meals. Love this place, but... This is one of my favorite places to frequent for true southern cooking. A few things to note: They recently made this place cash only. I can understand if they were a fast food restaurant, but this is not good business. They have installed an ATM out front... for a charge! Again, not good business. Also, our server was terrible. Left appetizer plates on the table through the meal, never checked on the quality (which was good!) I had to keep asking for a fill-up of water. DJ on the bar on a Sunday night was nice, but too loud to have a conversation at the table. Horrible sound. Enough of the critical stuff and on to the food: AHHHHHH the food. Started this time with the Seafood Cakes starter. Fantastically seasoned, garlicky deliciousness. Add in the peach glazed wings, and I'm in heaven. The blackened catfish was awesome. Ordered the sampler dinner (Beans & rice, Etouffe and Gumbo). I now need a nap. I would eat the Etouffe every day if I could. Have also had the fried chicken, fried green tomatoes among other things at this joint. Don't forget the sides! Mac 'n cheese, creole veggis, collard greens, plantains. The food is here OK, but nothing worth going out of your way for. I have had good food here once or twice, but more often than not it's just "OK" .. Their ribs were pretty mediocre... I make better ribs at home and there are places in the immediate area that have better ribs. The other BBQ I've had there was just OK as well, nothing too memorable though. Sides are good, though, and probably the best part of the meal. Last time I went here the service was really, really lousy. We had the slowest waitress on earth I think. We ended up getting up and getting our own napkins, and at the end ended up getting our own "to go" containers from a pile at the bus table. My food was good but the service was poor. Went with friends on Saturday for lunch. We ordered coffee. They brought it out without any cream or sugar. We had to ask for it, by the time it was brought the coffee was getting cold. Asked for more coffee, ended up not getting it before I was done eating. No ketchup or mayo brought out with burger and fries. Service was slow. Seemed like at points we were forgotten about. The staff that brings the food out basically threw the food on the table without clearing appetizer plates away. We had to ask them to clear the plates and to slow down and pay attention to what they were doing. It was my friend's birthday. My friend brought me here to catch up while I was in town and I think this place is great for that. It's not too loud or crowded, the food is tasty, there's a full bar, and the drinks are reasonably priced. I had 2 Hurricanes and peach wings. I loved my choices. I felt there was an adequate amount of alcohol in my drink making me feel quite satisfied and ordering another. Peach wings are fairly new to me but I love peach so I gave it a try. Very tasty! Peach flavored glaze with a baby kick. I will order again. My friend ordered the blue drink and Georgia something with ice cream. She liked to ice cream one better. To eat she had fried green tomatoes which she liked. You have to order the sauce separately FYI. I have never had Johnnie Cakes in my life but let me tell you, it's a deliciously dangerous treat. I met a friend there. It was 4:30, the restaurant opens at 4. I ordered the seafood pasta, they were out. We wanted desserts to go, they were out of two of them. It was only 5:30 when we placed the orders for the to go desserts and only 4 or 5 other people in the restaurant at the time!! What really annoyed me is, they had a huge sign in the front regarding payment forms and the rules about separate checks. What was not displayed in big and bold lettering was there policy that gratuity would be applied no matter the size of the party. I understand some people don't tip as they probably should, however, gratuity should be earned, not assumed. What is the incentive for good service if the gratuity is guaranteed? Please don't say the manager will insure good service or possible termination, when there is no manager to be found and none came forward to ask if the service was satisfactory. The food, that they had was good, however, at 4:30, I'd expect whatever is listed on the menu to still be available. As for me and my friend, we have no intentions of returning to a restaurant that can't provide the food advertised after only being open for a half an hour and has a policy insisting I give a gratuity no matter the quality of service. read more

Went on a Saturday night for dinner. We were seated right away, but waited quite some time for our server. We sat in the bar area and it appeared the bartender was the only server in our area. Poor guy was running around like a chicken with his head cut off, so we gave him some slack. The food was amazing. Drinks were delicious. I had the "adult" lemonade. Yum! I am 5 months pregnant and when my best friend suggested our old favorite place to eat for lunch, I was ecstatic. I moved to Rockford and had been craving the peach wings and fried green tomatoes. Since I was in town on this particular day, it seemed like destiny for us to go to Dixie Kitchen. I was so excited! I was not aware that the management had changed but as soon as we were seated it became painfully obvious. I had my two year old with me, and I was looking forward to him being occupied with the little coloring sheets and alligator crayons, but the waitress informed that they no longer had this. I would soon find this to be the least of my disappointments. I ordered the peach wings and the fried green tomatoes. When the wings came out, they were undercooked and soggy. The peach glaze was bland. This is not the way I remembered them at all. Out of the twelve that we were served, it only took my friend and I to eat one wing each before we were disgusted and didn't want anymore. I informed the waitress and she said she needed to tell her manager. The manager let us know that she tasted them and they seemed fine to her. She said that they had been prepared up to their standards. She told us that we could order something else but she could not take the item off of our bill. We ate two wings! The rest of the food was equally disappointing. There was a big difference between the food that was served by the old management. The manager might have saved $7 by having us to pay for the terrible wings but she lost two customers that will be sure to pass the word that Dixie Kitchen has gone down and is not the great go to place for a great meal. read more

I've always enjoyed the food here, especially any of the Cajun classics (gumbo, jambalaya, etouffee). The fried green tomatoes are also a favorite of mine as an appetizer. Any time I've gone in, the atmosphere in the restaurant is entertaining with New Orleans jazz music in the background and different decorations hanging on the wall. I've also done carry out several times and felt that the food quality was still good by the time I got it home, even though it's over a 30 minute drive. Hopefully it will be safe to dine indoors again soon, because I really enjoy the hot jazz and good food at the restaurant. read more

My first time eating at Dixie Kitchen was for my grandmothers birthday back in 2016, I had the smothered chicken and rice with a side of mashed sweet potatoes which was good. My only complaint was that they smothered my chicken and rice in too much gravy, the amount was excessive. Fast forward a year later for my 31st birthday me, my wife, my daughter and one of my friends from school came here for dinner. I again got the smothered chicken and rice with brown gravy and a side of mashed sweet potatoes, I made it clear this time to ease up on the gravy. Dixie Kitchen has really good food with great portion sizes. Their cornbread pancakes with the sweet butter are phenomenal, I could eat those all day long. My only complaints are the wait time when you arrive. When I went for my birthday the place wasn't crowded which was surprising seeing how it was a Friday evening yet we still had to wait a good 35 minutes or so before we were seated. Its also a bit of drive for my wife and I as we live on the far south side of Chicago. The food makes up for the wait time and the location. My wife's uncle lives out that way so if we whenever we go visit him and his family; that's our excuse to dine at Dixie Kitchen. If you're ever in the area definitely give them a try. If you don't mind a little bit of a wait the food is well worth it. read more
