We saw this place and always wanted to visit it. It wasn't till we saw them on Chicago's Best that we saw we had to go. We took a family of 5. The kids ordered from the kids menu and we had ordered the cat fish and the ribs. The cat fish was really good, I'm not a big fish fan but the breading was good and not as greasy like some other places I've been to. The ribs were good and meaty but the sauce was a little too tangy for my taste. We ordered the red beans and rice, mac and cheese and fries. I didn't like the fries much, the red beans and rice were good and the mac and cheese was real mac and cheese and was REALLY good. They give you corn bread flap jacks and they were good as well. They only give you one basket free, then you need to pay for more. We went another time for lunch and this time I got the burger and the husband got the catfish again. I really liked the burger, it was big and juicy. I would go back and get that again. I don't think I would get the ribs again, but that's cause I don't really like the sauce. Went there on 3/14/2015 and the experience was something I couldn't believe. I've always loved eating there but the service over the years has decreased. My catfish filet was fried so hard you couldn't even taste the fish. My red beans and rice was hard. My greens were very bitter as well as my cornbread muffin falling apart. Recently visited the Dixie Kitchen and before entering saw a posting on the front door "Cash Only"? Once inside I saw a generic AVAL cash machine with a note stating "$1.50" per transaction? When I questioned the staff about this new policy the only answer I received was they were experiencing credit card Freud and decided on a cash only policy. With this information I told him I could not pay an extra $1.50 plus the cost of the meal in unsafe area and departed. read more

Food was cold AND not seasoned, then to add insult to injury the manager Karen was curt and unsympathetic. Her response was akin to calling me a liar because "they don't sell old (which she misunderstood my concern) nor cold food and found it more important to educate me on their food prep protocol for Mac&cheese and catfish batter than to ensure my satisfaction as a long time customer who is also a creature of habit and orders the SAME thing. I vow today that I WILL NOT BE BACK AND DO NOT RECOMMEND SPENDING YOUR DOLLARS HERE. This of course could have been addressed if the waitress Allicia had checked on us in a timely fashion and/or was in the area to respond to our attempts for attention from others. The waitress immediately resorted to summoning the manager without at least asking is there anything she could do. She later stated she would've had them give me another piece of fish had she addressed the concern but per protocol she had to get the manager/owner. We went on Mother's Day around 5:00, was crowded and had to wait about 45 minutes, but well worth it. Drove home to Ohio from Chicago trip and had heard about this place. Stopped in with my wife and nephew and his wife. I am a very picky eater, do not like southern food, but my wife and the other two do and they loved their meal. I settled on pulled pork sandwich and fires. It was the best pulled pork I'd ever had, cooked just right and just enough BBQ sauce, not overwhelming. Our server was very nice and responsive to our needs. I'm working on scheduling another trip just to go to the Dixie Kitchen. I would highly recommend this place. read more

Can I do zero stars? Used to be my favorite restaurant, but I. Not coming back again. I will make my own macaroni. After I finished eating, I pulled a humongous piece of grey hair, or blonde hair from my mouth. Too done. Offered me an extra macaroni or to take one off of my bill. Why would I want more food. Let me say I really enjoy this place. I've had several of their dishes and even been there on a Friday night for drinks and the different bands they have. My favorite is the fried catfish and any side dish especially the blackeyed peas or the gumbo. The jimmy-cakes are delicious and they keep them coming. The drinks are good with dinner but when I'm there for the band it's Jack and Tonic. I really love the decor and like to sit in the bait shop area. I take my girl on Tuesdays when the catfish is on special. It's a good deal. read more

Dixie Kitchen is always refreshingly pleasing whenever I go...something different from the Friday's & Chili's that plague our society. The johnny cakes are so good, but you always wish you had syrup, you know? People go for the cliched "Soul Food", but I always get the blackened Tilapia with plaintains cooked perfectly. Substitute the vegetables with mashed sweet potatoes, and a peach colada served in a mason jar. Yummy! WOW! This is one of our favorite places! Everything is always delicious.. in the begging you get hot, fresh johnny cakes, which is a great start to the meal. I LOVE the Jambalaya, mac n cheese, green fried tomatoes, peach wings .. and almost anything I have tried! Make sure you leave room for dessert, the thought of the peach cobbler makes my mouth water. The last time we were in we had MIKE as our server, he was exceptional, very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had about the menu, he was timely and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the entire meal. Haven't been to the restaurant since it was in Hyde Park. I am sure that if President visited the restaurant it was not the one in Lansing. They have a little disclaimer on the menu that President Obama had eaten there. Went there on Saturday. The first thing that turned me off was the big "CASH ONLY" sign. Really! I should have kept moving then. I'll gave it a try. Waited to be seated longer than normal. It was pretty busy but there were lots of empty tables. I ordered a bowl of greens and some red beans and rice. The greens had to flavor. I asked for some vinegar to make them palatable. It was brought some pepper vinegar. I thought it was hot pepper but it had slices of green pepper in the bottle. Wasn't good. The red beans and rice resembled something that had been taken out of a can and heated up, mixed in some rice and sprinkled some raw green onions on top. The menu said they were cooked with pork. That alone should have given them some favor. They were flavorless. Couldn't eat them I brought them home with a plan to add something to give them some taste. They finally were tossed. I made my own with less effort. And finally. Forget about sanitation. One of the young men that was wiping off tables was using a rag that was hanging in his back pocket. Food service sanitation needs to be revisited. It is such a shame that the quality does not represent what it used to be in Hyde Park. Perhaps there different management. read more

I moved into the area a year ago. This was the first place I came across and it felt like home. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious, and Friday nights they have classic soul night. I love the fried fish and smothered pork chops from here. There sides are good as well. I hate that hyde park revamped everything and got rid of Dixie Kitchen. The service is not as good and I'm sure the food isn't either. The location is probably 4 times the size of the original HP location. The service is ok, you definitely have to keep reminding the service for certain request. They also have a full bar at this location with plentiful parking. read more

Been going to Dixie Kitchen for over 15 yrs back in their Harper square days but today was not like the old days with the exception of the waiter... I got my peachy wings ( they were good) had catfish ...its ok but then I order a key lime pie that taste like they just but some eagle brand milk on top of Graham crackers so after one bite I inform the waiter it doesn't taste like any lime is there. The manager comes and informs me that their policy which is supposedly on the back of the menu who reads the back it doesn't have any food back there ...anyway that their policy is even if you don't like something you have to pay for it they won't remove it off of your bill .So let me get this correct you are restaurant and if someone doesn't like your food after only one bite you're going to force them to eat it or pay for it you don't really care you're going to get your money. okay I never heard of such a policy it has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard that a restaurant would not even say what can give you something else if you don't like this. Needless to say I was appalled. Others in the group weren't happy either but that's okay I just don't have to go back and if it's more important that you get $5 for a pie instead of keep a customer that's been coming to you for 15 years then that's the choice that you as the owner can make cuz the manager specifically said that was the owner's new policy but to finish it all off where a party of four and then we also have another party of 10 that's there and are friends of mine at another table and we find out that this establishment takes cash only and they don't even offer an ATM machine again needless to say I've patronized this business for well over 15 years have always pretty much been happy there was a few issues with the food today but that what topped it off when you were going to force me to pay for a pie that I just literally have one bite out of .
