Was very excited to try this place after seeing it on Instagram. The wait wasn't bad and the self-order kiosk was a nice touch although there was no description on what was in the drinks in the machine. However, the drinks did not live up to my expectations. Ben's blue skies was way, way, way too sweet even after selecting the less sweet option. After I got the drink and "mixed" it, the milk powder and the syrup definitely did not combine. The strawberry fresh milk was alright. The syrups are very sweet in general. Not sure how the "less sugar" option compares to full sugar since they're already way too sweet. Very happy that this tea place moved into Newcastle a few years ago. Been dozens of times and am happy with almost every purchase. They have so many different types of drinks, you can never be bored. My husband enjoys the classic milk tea and gets it every time. I like the fruit tea, harmonies lava lamp and Ben's blue skies. It's also nice that you can select your sugar and ice levels. It was more of a 3.5 star experience for me. Rounding up to support this new business in an area that sorely lacks a bubble tea store! I visited DIY Tea Lab during their soft opening. It's extremely unfortunate that they are heavily impacted by COVID-19 from the get go. Their signature menu items were not available due to health precautions. I appreciate them making the choice to be cautious. There were only a few drinks available for order, which was fine. I chose the classic boba milk tea with less sugar and less ice. I would say that the price is on the higher side (I think it was $5). The drink was good - I liked the taste of their tea. The boba was just ok though. Also, this is a bit nitpicky, but I found their cup to be super tall and skinny, and doesn't stay in the standard car cup holders very steadily... A disappointment. A fun idea for those that want to do the whole DIY thing (which is not happening due to COVID), so this review is just for the drinks I've had here. I've come here several times due to convenience as it's walking distance, but I think it may be time to suck it up and drive somewhere to spend my money. From all of the drinks I've tried, I will say the traditional black milk tea has been the best and most flavorful. That would probably be the only thing I'd recommend getting IF you decide to come here. The green tea lacks flavor and tastes extremely diluted. Jasmine milk tea tastes like milk with a splash of tea. All of the matcha drinks are 90% milk with heavily diluted matcha. Smoothies are fine. Price is affordable as the drinks include a standard topping (like boba, pudding, jelly, etc). I've come here a few times when they've run out of boba well before closing (like 1.5-2 hours before close), which doesn't make sense to me and sucks when you just want some boba tea. Service is mediocre as everything is just through the tablet - the kids here don't even greet you when you walk in lol. I might come back for some black milk tea if I'm desperate.. read more

Im not one to leave reviews. Ive been a manager at a boba shop before and the kids that work here are out of hand. They seem like 15 years old and really just dont do their job. Just seems like whenever they are left without a manager they feel like they dont have to do anything, can fuck off and can take 30 minutes to make one drink. Most the time they're in the back laughing. Drinks are fine, but didnt mix in the sugar at all, it was just sitting in the bottom, place is mostly clean, table are usually a mess. Finally tried their drink today. Of all, the grapefruit fresh up smoothie caught my eyes. The coral color was beautiful and the taste was refreshing and not overly sweet, even with regular sugar level. The smoothie is more like an iced slushy drink and it came with 2 slices of grapefruit in the cup. The service was overall quick. I however think the staffs can be more welcoming and show more friendliness. Being a new business in the neighborhood, first timer are easy to draw, it's the returning ones that help the business sustain. 2 stars solely for the dart as they are super super nice! One of our cups broke and they gave us a new drink right away. The drinks however are super super sweet! I had ordered a brown sugar milk tea and it was just way too sweet. I couldn't even drink it. I even ordered it at 50% per staff recommendation. I also ordered a kid's strawberry milk and again, way too sweet. I had to take it home and dilute it with more milk. If you like super sweet drinks that taste artificially sweet, this place is your place! But if you like your teas to taste like...well, tea, then try a different spot. read more

Pretty decent and a convenient spot to get my boba fix on. Even more convenient is that you can order online for pick up later. Their text messaging system is spot on, updating you on when they receive your order, when they start working on your order, and when your order is ready for pickup. If you're really good at planning, you can order hours in advance. I judge boba spots on the quality of their boba. Here, it's pretty good. Not the best, and not always consistent, but generally pretty good. They have some unique tea flavors that you don't find at most boba places. For instance, my son's favorite flavor here (which haven't across before) is the Blue Ocean, which is more like a lightly sweetened soda because it is carbonated and the pea flower is a gorgeous color. I've tried their popcorn chicken. Decent, but HardWok is better. Their bubble waffle is not great however. read more

DIY Tea Lab has pretty good Bubble Tea! I've also been to their Redmond location too. At this location, I have tried their: ~Classic Ruby Black Milk Tea, it was pretty good. I added the big black jelly chunks, instead of having tapioca balls inside. I would probably get this one again. ~Blue Ocean, TBH, I just got the drink because it looked cool and had a cool name. The drink was not my type of drink, because it had too much lime flavor and sparkling water. So, if you like sparking water and some lime flavor you will prob like it. I've been coming here almost since their opening. I like their variety drinks and they have some pretty unique ones that other boba shops in the area don't have. It's also really nice how they have some more "authentic" drinks that suit the Asian palette more (i.e. their Black Sesame Milk Tea), at least in my opinion. Also, another plus...their drinks are pretty tasty as well as aesthetic. The two drinks I recommend are their White Peach Oolong Fresh Milk and Life is Peachy. Their customer service is also pretty top-notch. Occasionally, when it's super busy, they aren't able to serve you immediately but they're usually really willing to help you. So I excuse these few moments. One thing I really miss about the shop though is their popcorn chicken that they had a while ago. One more thing to note is that none of their drinks come with toppings so you do have to add this on your own. Definitely 10/10 recommend read more

Some of the worst boba customer service I have ever got ever in my life...And I have been to some busy shops and they still take the time to greet you and communicate when it is very packed. Was not greeted at all and no one talked to me about anything. There were multiple steps in the process where a hello, hi, thank you...literally anything but clearly their phones and private conversations were more important. Its pretty unfortunate because everything else was fine, my drink, me ordering using the touch screen, and the text messages (though I didn't have my phone on me while entering the store so not the greatest system all the time). Thank god for all the signs and my own intuitions because outside of making the physical drink staff did nothing for me. I am delighted that they are part of the Newcastle community now. First, it must be said that they have excellent tea with quality ingredients and a great selection of flavors. Their staff is always safe, sanitary, and nice. They have the shop set up to keep social distance going too. Second, they are supporting the community in wonderful ways during these tough times. They've already donated drinks to local health care workers, delivering a huge order to a hospital in Bellevue. They're also selling (cash only) big beautiful bunches of flowers that normally would be sold at Pike Place Market. The flowers are fabulous at $20 a bunch. And this helps the farmers keep their income despite the shutdowns. I hope DIY stays in Newcastle for a long time to come and that they make the flowers a permanent part of their shop. The DIY concept is really fun, but to make sure orders are quick and safe, they also have a menu of drinks available online. We got a couple drinks through their to-go ordering system and it was super easy. We were able to pay, tip and select a pickup time online. I really liked that I got text update as my order was being prepared and when it was ready for pickup. Our order was ready when we got there. They have a couple tables just inside the door for to-go orders, so you can have a totally contactless pickup. Each order is bagged and labeled with the name your order is under. I got the "Let That Man'Go" smoothie with strawberry popping boba. My husband (don't worry, I didn't let him go) got a Classic Ruby Milk Tea. Maybe i needed to try a different drink, but I got the strawberry matcha with boba and it was honestly disgusting. It tastes like you're drinking strawberry jam, but worse because there's little bits of powder in it that has the texture of spoiled milk. For taste, it's a zero for me. This place was unique and fun compared to other boba tea restaurants. Here you can choose what goes into your drink. I choose my ingredients. Let me tell you, all the ingredients look fresh and always taste full of delicious flavor they have to offer. Immediately when you walk in, the bright colors in their food makes you so happy. The store looks simple but sophisticated. You can tell they have something different. They even have DIY kits, where you can take home 10 lovely ingredients and their cup/stir supplies to put your own concoctions together at home. It's so fun and trying your drink with every added ingredient makes you giddy. I'm sure the sugar kicks in that point. I just loved being able to try my hand at becoming a novice Boba tea maker. My friend won a giveaway for a month of free boba from diy and ever since then we are addicted! I got the brown sugar ruby black milk tea with tapioca&grass jelly (50% sugar and light ice) and she got the Freshen up smoothie with grass jelly. Finally got this place off my list. and yet the excitement isn't there. This place isn't as good as the pictures make it out to be. Had the classic jasmine milk tea and mango green tea with crema. These drinks are as basic as it gets. The mango green tea is extremely generic as well as the crema that goes on top in terms of taste. The only thing that saves it is the mango bits added to the drink. They have a screen in the store that demonstrates how to make their drinks. And its as typical as can be. Green tea + generic mango syrup + simple syrup. The classic jasmine milk tea was very creamy, but the tea was terrible. It was extremely bitter with almost no jasmine tea flavor. Jasmine tea is one of the easiest to mess up because of its low steep temperature. And that becomes very obvious when you go to a milk tea shop and you get bitter jasmine green tea (its actually very common). I actually dont mind the bitterness too much, but this was bitterness on another level. They have classic and organic milk tea which I believe means powdered creamer and real milk. I think most people will enjoy the classic. Boba is what ever. This place is very popular and I can see how it can appeal to many. Its personally not for me. I am excited to eventually come back when they start letting you put together your own milk teas again. read more

As much as I want to support local business, I am disappointed at DIY customer services. This is a recurrence problem with my account where I always somehow ended up with negative 50 points. The last time this happened was back in August 31st 2022. I placed an order for 3 boba tea and ended up with negative 20 points instead of plus 30 point (-50+30= -20). I reached out to DIY via Facebook on August 31st regarding the issue, and heard back om September 4th stating that point should be accumulated. They asked for my phone number associated with the account for that can investigate, so I did that. Waited until September 13th, and still have not heard back, so I reach out again. I was told that they are still waiting to hear back from their POS. Fast forward to September 26th, and I still have not heard a word from DIY. I decided to do a mobile order to see if problem got resolved and they simply forgot to notified me, My mobile order (screenshot) indicated I still have a negative 20 points, so nothing have been done. So I reach out again with the screenshot of my mobile order as proof that my account still have a negative point accumulation. Fast forward to today NOVEMBER 17th, I still have not heard from DIY. As far as I am concern, I have done my part of being patient and done with this waiting game. As much as I want to support neighborhood business, at this point I would rather drive all the way to TP Tea in Chinatown to get my Boba Tea fix than bike to DIY. BTW, TP Tea serve the BEST boba tea in town. Fresh milk, fresh boba, fresh strong tea and no sugary syrup. Simply the best in town. read more

Yumm I love that they let you customize your drink. I hate it when it's too sweet, so I always get 25-50% sweetness. Their online ordering and DIY pay stations are super convenient during a time like this; the drinks also come out really fast. I also love the flower bouquets that they sell in store.
