Holy crap, where has this gem been my entire life?! Had the goulash with spatzle, was amazing. Best comfort food in the world. Made me insanely happy. Being that I'm part German -- the part way back in my genealogy that gave me a funny sounding last name -- I'm pretty much always up for German food. It may not be the prettiest food to look at, but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in filling-you-up-with-comfort goodness. So when my boyfriend's grandparents got us reservations at a local German restaurant fave of theirs, I was intrigued. And after the meal, I was verliebt (in love)! (Or at least I think that means "in love." Again, my German-ity is pretty much limited to my name, pale skin and love of beer.) Our waitress was quick to seat and serve us. And I went with my fave, sauerbraten with spaetzle. The sauerbraten was rich in its savoriness. You could taste the herbs in the sauce, which brought out the beef flavor. And the beef was tender. All of this is what is expected with this German pot roast, and it hit the spot. And spaetzle. Oh, spaetzle. These egg noodles had a delightful sponginess to them. They helped soak up the sauerbraten sauce, extending this dish even further. DJ's Bistro features a few German beers, which are served in the taller 0.5L beer glasses that correspond to the brewery. And they are a bargain at $5 each. The waitress/hostess told us that she is from the Czech Republic, I believe, and the owner is Czech as well. (DJ's Bistro also features Czech dishes.) It's great that the food behind the restaurant comes from people who grew up in and know about Central European heritage. They can help bring us German-in-name folks up to speed. ;-) read more

I recently popped in again and had the jagerschnitzel. It seemed to have much more flavor this time and the lemon was a great addition. They had four different beers on tap, I believe three were from Germany and one from Czech. They also had a dessert option (apple strudel) which I did not try, but they at least have dessert now. I have been swearing that I would get over to DJ's Bistro on Sutter Street in Concord for months, and I finally made it! DJ's serves European Cuisine including schnitzels, bratwurst, goulash, and sauerbraten. I had the pleasure of meeting Monika today. She's been with the restaurant for over 20 years. She started as a patron, enjoying DJ's food with the local German club that she belongs to. She's a hoot, definitely someone you want to take a minute to chat with! I ordered the Jägerschnitzel which is crispy breaded pork cutlets served with rich mushroom gravy. OMG, it's so delicious, perfectly cooked with two HUGE pieces of pork. The dish comes with spaetzle, a traditional German dumpling or noodle, spaetzle is boiled in water or broth then pan-fried in butter, and traditional German sweet and sour cabbage. I also got the soup of the day. A delicious chicken soup with potatoes and packed with flavor. I have enough Jägerschnitzel for another meal. Yummy! DJ's is currently open Friday-Sunday 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Business is slow, and they could really use our support. New owners didn't keep to the original quality. This place had great homemade soups, but now are at canned level at best. Not the same. Went downhill. DJ's is my favorite place for German food in the Bay. It's definitely a family business, small & quaint & the food tastes homemade in the best way, like my Opa used to make. Their prices are great considering the size of the helpings, I can never finish a plate in one sitting. Their service is friendly & there's always at least one German guy sitting at the bar to recommend a Weiss. I recommend the brat dinner plate, it comes with 2 brats, sauerkraut, pickled cabbage, mustard, and potato salad. Their bread is amaaazing too. The sauerbraten is fantastic, it comes with whipped cream and it totally balances the dish. Their goulash is also delicious. read more

This was my first time since the new owner took-over. My co-workers: Dutch, Chinese and American said that from now on is their favorite place. I had a trip soup and Garlic Lemon Chicken Salad with amazing dill dressing. They had Hungarian Goulash with spaetzle, Bohemian Sauerbraten and Jaeger Schnitzel. Goulash is so soft and tender spiced very well, Bohemian Sauerbraten is great and schnitzel was delicious........ One of my coworker said that is was a meal of the month. Two complaints: salad was so good that everyone wanted to try and they eat almost everything and portions are so big but delicious so you forget about your diet. read more

New owner is horrible, food has had a total downgrade from previous owner. The schnitzel only came with potato salad, no more cabbage and sauerkraut. Sauerbraten sauce is different and bland and came with canned purple cabbage. Prices skyrocketed too, don't come here. read more

Not as good as before they changed ownership. I had the Bavarian meatloaf, and it had no flavor at all. My husband had the Jagerschnitzel and he said it was dry. They also charged us $6 each for our drinks, a Coke and a glass of iced tea. We used to enjoy this place a great deal, but we've decided we won't be back. Went to a happy hour, 5-7, was supposed to have 3 to 4 appetizers, had at least 8 tables, only 3 tables received them, and only 2 appetizers were served. 6 pieces of fried squash and 4 pieces chicken wings/fries. Finally found myself at DJ's after years of curiosity - My mother's family is Czech-Mex (Slovaks integrated into El Paso), and I grew up eating kielbasa, pierogi, stuffed cabbage, and potatoes - all with chiles and queso. Concord is a desert of Eastern European food, so I was pretty excited to find DJ's. Didn't see any stuffed cabbage or pierogi on the dinner menu, but there is plenty of brats, sauerbraten, schnitzel, and goulash. German beers are on draft for $5, and of course, they have Pilsner Urquell. I personally feel the food slants heavily toward the German side (as well as the adorable owners of the place), and there's nothing wrong with that. At $16.50 an entree, prices aren't cheap, but the portions are gigantic, especially for the Jaeger Schnitzel. The Bohemian Sauerbraten, same story. The name of the game in this place is carbs and gravy, so it's hard to complain about much. Ok: I wasn't a fan of their red cabbage sauerkraut, and really wish I had seen some pierogi and stuffed cabbage on the menu. :-( If you're into this food genre, I recommend Walzwerk in San Francisco. The Single Jaeger Schnitzel ($9.50) was a very large cutlet almost covering the plate with some spaetzle, red cabbage, and gravy trying to peak out around it. Wanted a birthday surprise my hubby whose favorite food is German. Took him here with friends. Very disappointed. Menu already limited and they didn't have some of the items. Service was not at all warm and inviting. As for the food, the only positive thing was the portion sizes were large. The roast pork dishes and the schnitzels were dry. He was getting hungry so I started to Yelp a few places up and see what was in the area and stumbled onto this place.. German food places are hard to come by where we live so I decided on this place.. Walked in here it's a very cute little place very comforting settling, bright light and soccer game on.. We were greeted right away by our waitress and sat us where we could watch the soccer game.. She asked us for drink orders.. And it came out right away with that she took out food order.. She followed back out with a complimentary basket of bread and butter.. Bread was nice and soft.. Hubby ordered the Jaegér Schnitzel which came with spaetzle, red cabbage, and a mushroom gravy and I got the Hungarian Goulash which came with spaetzle.. Food came out pretty fast about 10-15 mintues after we ordered it.. The Jaegér Schnitzel was 2 very large cutlet almost covering the plate and it was nice and crispy.. My Hungarian Goulash smelled amazing when she put it down in front of me.. I took my first bite and the meat was so tender it almost melted in your mouth.. You could even take a fork and break the meat up with that.. Hubby gave me a bite of his food, and i must say one of the best Schnitzels I've ever had in my life, at this point I secretly wanted to swap foods with him lol... Overall out experience here was wonderful, the waitress was super friendly, attentive to everything we needed, food portions were very generous (to the point we couldn't finish it we had to doggie bag it), food came out really fast, food is incredible.. Was excited to see we can order takeout from one of the only German restaurants around. I love their spaetzle. Forthose who don't know, it's a pasta in tiny bits that is boiled and dressed. Two stars are for the food. Very rude female server. We were ordering wearing our mask and we were told that mask is no longer needed. YES, WE ARE AWARE! First of all, I decide for myself whether I want to continue wearing mask. I am a healthcare worker and I see a lot of sick people. So I am wearing mask to protect everyone, even i am out of work. And then, we were told by a guy that we can go someplace else if we do not feel safe in their restaurant. We did not comment and still continued to wear our mask and did not say any word. We treated them even nicer after how they treated customers who prefers to mask up. I had never heard of this place before, but saw someone recommend it while browsing the Facebook page for Pleasant Hill restaurants open during Shelter in place. So happy I found it because their food was great. We got the jaeger schnitzel with spatzle and bratwurst with potato salad. It was soooo much food. We just got back from Eastern Europe. A friend recommended trying this place. When we arrived to meet our friend, we were greeted warmly by Jennifer. We ordered Wiener schnitzel, jaeger schnitzel, goulash and the special Czech pancake with chicken and cheese. Everything was very good, and very authentic tasting from the the countries we just visited. Jennifer was attentive and very friendly. Definitely enjoyed our lunch and will definitely come back. I took my friend out to a celebratory dinner for joining the Navy and based on our experience at this restaurant the last time he was here visiting he wanted to eat here again. This time I ordered the special of the day, their Bavarian Meat Loaf and my friend ordered the Bratwurst again. Both were dinner sized entrees (if you are looking at the pictures I posted). The Bavarian Meat Loaf was melt in your mouth good. It cannot and should not be compared to American Meat Loaf. It was so savory and rich. The Bratwurst was just as delicious as last time. I truly enjoy DJ's Bistro consistency with their flavors and portions. The portions were so big that we were both only able to eat half of our entrees and took the rest home. We received great customer service. Our waitress was a tall, thin, young, short-haired brunette woman. She was all smiles and very attentive. Returned food, and walked out. First time in my life to do that! Deserving of ZERO stars! The most disgusting meal I have ever had in any restaurant in any country! I used to be a regular under the old owner and first time back. Food used to be solid and consistent. Sauerbraten sauce was OK but meat was gray and dry, overcooked, reminded me of school dinners, and spaetzle was a day old if not two (!), completely dried out, and it came with some jelly and Miracle Whip like dessert which was just weird. The other dish was Goulash. Sauce completely cold with same dessicated spaetzle. Both dishes obviously microwaved. Disgrace to all Czech, Austrian or German food. They should have changed the name and not kept as DJs Bistro as it is a disgrace to the original restaurant. Should not be in the food industry serving food like this to customers and I feel sorry for those patrons that eat this slop and pay for it. read more

I try not to mix politics and food but when I walk in a restaurant blaring Fox News above the bar on a large screen for the duration we were there ..it's hard not to take notice...and one would think Germany and Central Europe would have had their fill of nationalistic propaganda but I guess some folks are slow learners... Anyways, I found the food decent, not great but good and their draft czech and german beers solid including the Erlanger which was to die for. Since we go back every year to Austria, where my husband's from, am familiar with the staples, and the ambiance at DJs felt like I was walking through a wormhole. Before our dishes came we were served a basket of doughy pillsbury type rolls, and then a salad that was partially wilted and drenched in their default ranch with dill dressing. When I pointed this out to server I was told that it was cabbage, not lettuce.....my thought bubble said "so cabbage doesn't wilt?" I had the chicken schnitzel which was great and my husband had the pork schnitzel which was just ok and would have been much better with some sort of sauce, a lingonberry jam or something similar. There was no dessert as was the case last time...not sure if they still offer it but dont think well be back again to find out. read more

Be aware, a group of 6 friends went to DJ's and were over-charged. The website has one price but when the bill came, some items were $2 higher. Also, a glass of red wine showed that it should have been $8/glass and they were charged $18. When they asked the waitress about it, she said the prices had increased and she wouldn't make any adjustments. I may be wrong, but I would guess that the waitress is 'skimming' cash off the top of the bill and re-writing the bill to the correct pricing (then pocketing the difference) so her ending till balances. Just my opinion since I've worked retail for more than 40 years and have seen all sorts of things happen with cash being taken. And here's a response from them: (and it appears it's not from the owner) buy yet 'Jen' seems to have a guilty conscious since she thinks I accused 'her'. I'll bet the owner wouldn't like the fact that she has told my friends to never come back. Also, how can she recognize me since I was not there, I'm just sharing their experience and didn't even say what day they were there. Jen M. I absolutely love German food. I was out in the Concord/Pleasant Hill/Walnut Creek area and really wanted some jaeger schnitzel. That's fried pork with spaetzle...freakin delish. We came across DJ's and loved the ambiance. The server was super German and made the feel of the place fantastic. She was also very helpful and the service was great. She mentioned the special of the day...stuffed cabbage. Holy cow the stuff cabbage was huge!!! And you get 2 of them! My only complaint? The sauce was way too sweet. Unfortunately, it made it a little difficult to eat... The jaeger schnitzel was ridiculously huge. We ordered a half order and could barely finish it. The spaetzle was not the best I've ever had but what an awesome combo it makes with the schnitzel. Overall, the service was great...but the food was just ok. 3 solid stars. read more

What's not to like about this place? Well it is small, but that's what gives it it's uniqueness. It's cute. The bread they serve is amazing. So simple yet so yummie. I normally order the schnitzel with spaetzle. OMG it's SO GOOD! Pretty good with beer as well. I want to explore the rest of the menu, but I love the schnitzel way too much. I grabbed two to go dishes from this restaurant while I was in the area. I have no German restaurants anywhere near where I live and my husband and I really enjoy this cuisine so I picked up the daily special which was a roasted pork knuckle, and I also ordered the pork cutlets. I waited a while for both orders to come out and received bags of bags of food! They really give you a lot for your money. I got bread, salad, soup, two entrees and two to three sides with each entree. We were able to dine on these two entrees for two nights and into a third!
