Late one night with nothing but the light of the Kindle to pierce the darkness, I slowly walked to the kitchen and as I approached, a terrible scratching noise became louder and louder. Was the dog left out on the back porch? Had a raccoon finally summoned the courage to claw the garbage can closest to the kitchen door? And then, nothing, quiet. Was I in some sort of early male menopausal fog, no longer comfortable in my own skin, imagining this hideous sound? Then what sounded like a large cat or perhaps a very small child with dagger like finger nails, scratched again and again from behind the cabinet wall. Cruz has helped us with two separate mouse intrusion events over the past 4 years. The first time was a major operation with mice and likely rats as well getting into our pantry. With Cruz's help we got the situation taken care of over a couple of weeks. More recently, Cruz came out and did a very thorough inspection. He patched one area where mesh had fallen out, but finding no smoking gun we concluded that the mouse likely ran in when the door was open briefly during cold weather. We first discovered rats in our garage several months ago and were fortunate enough to catch one using traps and bait. The unfortunately thing is that a couple months later we discovered a bunch more rat droppings and chewed through Play-doh containers. This was pretty unsettling since we have 2 kids under 3 and store toys and such in the garage. We got referred to Do It Right Rodent Proofing and Frank in particular from my brother-in-law as he had a similar rat issue and only spoke highly about his experience. After calling in Frank, he assessed the situation we had and did a thorough job pinpointing access points where the rats had been coming through. He sealed off every possible entry point he could to ensure no rats could enter through those spots again and even found extra ones closer to our garage where they could also crawl through. Once he sealed those spots off, he did a super thorough cleaning of our storage area, cleaned up all of the rat droppings (and even found a long dead rat in there), set up maintenance traps, and gave us a 1 year maintenance period where he would come by to check in if any more rats were caught. We were super happy to have our rat problem cleared out and have only caught 1 or 2 random rats that probably snuck in through our open garage door. Fortunately there was no infestation and no droppings to massively clean up. I couldn't recommend Frank and his team more for any rodent problem you might have and in addition to the quality of his work, he was super communicative and informative with regards to our situation. Our home has rarely ever had mice problems. When a mouse has ever been spotted (once every five years or so), I've been successful at laying out a few traps and taking care of business. Last Fall, however, it seemed that after I would catch the first mouse, a new one took its place a few days later. I was clueless as to how they were always making it inside the house and feared they had already set up a nest in the walls near the furnace (where I had seen some droppings). After reading positive reviews on both NextDoor and Yelp!, I called "Do It Right Rodent Proofing" on a Tuesday morning, 1/14/2020. Cruz, the owner, was at my house later that afternoon, as in the same day, to do a visual inspection. He identified the likely points of entry for the mice--opportunities I had never even considered. There were also two mouse holes I was walking by every day, but because they were so small, I did not notice them. Cruz did, though! Cruz's team of four people came over the next day, Wednesday afternoon (1/15/2020) and spent about 90 minutes sealing off any entry points using foam, wire mesh, mortar--whatever was called for in order to close off access. They also spent considerable time vacuuming up any found mice droppings in garage corners, under couches, etc. (because leaving droppings can attract other mice, Cruz said--I didn't know that). Cruz told me the most important thing to do is to proof the house's perimeter completely. You have to deny all entry to the outside mice that want to get inside. Cruz sees openings and opportunities that you and I miss and then seals them off. Once he knows he has closed off all access points to the outside mice, Cruz will lay some traps for any mouse that may still be inside the house (remember, you've sealed off the house to the outside mice as well as any inside mice that want to get back outside). Any inside mice will eventually get hungry enough to take the bait of a trap and "snap" you have no more mouse problem. If you're squeamish about that, Cruz will place trap inside box with holes that allow a mouse inside so you don't have to see the results. I think he has "humane" traps, as well. Cruz isn't inherently mean toward the mice--he told me just that they belong outside of our homes, not inside. Cruz was great about following-up a week later to see if any mice were caught in the trap. There were none and with no mice sightings or droppings seen, I'm confident that there were no mice inside the house the day Cruz and his team came over to seal the house's mice entry points. He and his team has called me a few times after and because I've reported a 100% clean, mice-free house, we know everything is under control now. By the time I had called Cruz, I had probably bought $300 worth of traps, mesh, and other rodent control products--all to no avail. I was never going to be successful on my own because I didn't have the experience to identify all access points and didn't have the skill or expertise to close off these access points. Sure, I'd take out a mouse here and there, but I would have lost the war had I just try to fight by myself. With Cruz as your five-star general in your employ, you are going to win the war! Cruz and his team earn their wages because my house no longer has any mice and that's what it's all about. Cruz also gives a generous three-year warranty on his work, so if the mice somehow gnaw their way back inside, he will be back to shore up the perimeter again. A few months ago a terrible smell began wafting thru my heating ducts. It took a couple days to confirm that it was in fact coming from the ducts and to discover that the source was a dead rat, mostly buried inside the heating insulation and wedged in a small space above the ducts and below the basement ceiling. Fun! I called a couple companies with the hope that someone would remove the rat asap so that I could resume using my heater... and also rodent-proof the basement. The first/other company had a complicated process that involved scheduling someone to do a site visit to assess the situation and provide a quote. Then only if I accepted the quote would they schedule a second appointment to begin the work and remove the dead rat. The employee who came by to provide a quote also explained that I would need to first hire someone else to build custom doors for our open light well before they could proceed with rat proofing the rest of the basement and removing the dead rat. So this would effectively mean dead-rat-stench in my apartment for a 2-4 more weeks. Cruz came over, examined the basement, provided an estimate (which *included* building 2 custom doors) and then unceremoniously removed the dead rat on his way out. His estimate included everything the other company offered (cleaning and sealing the basement, setting and checking traps, redoing the duct insulation)... *plus* custom-building 2 doors for the light well... all for the same price that the other company was going to charge just for the cleaning/sealing/traps/insulation. Cruz did a great job, we're still rat-free 3 months later. He also came back several times to ensure the doors were just right and sealed properly and even installed soft-close dampers on all the doors when I mentioned that the springs caused the doors to slam. I've moved into a late 20s house with a rat infestation. These rats have made nests in the ceilings and the walls. The air is putrid and evidence of their presence abounds, amidst the piles of clothes, furniture, and trash. So we finally figured out the problem *I hope*. It was the connection between our house and our neighbor's. They didn't look there initially, which I think they should have, which led to my previous update. I think it was not part of the initial inspection because we need to access this area through our neighbor's yard. Anyway, I called Frank to inspect the area and he came out without issue. He found a hole that he filled with foam and then even went to the other side, in our garage, to seal it up with some metal flashing. Three months later, we've only seen 1 mouse and we think we caught it a couple of weeks ago (hoping that is the last one which is a residual from when that gap was still open). I asked Frank to come by so we can seal off that hole with some cement on the neighbor's side so we don't have to trouble her again. He came by and did it within a day and also did another walk through to ensure he doesn't see any droppings or other areas of concern. I can't thank Cruz enough for his great work and responsiveness. We initially worked with him in 2020 to remove mice from our garage. He was diligent, always showed up on time and did a great job of removing the mice as well as mouse-proofing the garage. We haven't had any mouse problems in the garage since. The exterminator was very thorough as he inspected possible entry points that mice might have entered the house. Frank was able to start the work Monday after the Friday inspection. The work on sealing the garage and kitchen was quickly done. Frank comes by weekly to inspect the traps but no activity so far. It seems that sealing the entry points is keeping the mice out. As a bonus, Frank was able to do some handy work for me in addition to the extermination service. The fee for the work was reasonable. read more
