Went to try a new restaurant in Indy's downtown area. That crows is new to Indy, but it's familiar in Kentucky where they are a southern smokehouse and is a spot for those who love whiskey. It located on the ground floor of the Hiyatt downtown. We had a girls night at the crows and it was perfect from the food to the drinks too Service. It was so pleasing that one of my girlfriends took her parents for their wedding anniversary that same week. I can't wait to go back!!

I checked this place out for lunch before their grand opening. I'm a bit of a brisket snob (it's hard to find good brisket in Indiana) having lived in Texas for many years, but this chain restaurant from Louisville does a nice job with theirs. Let's see if they can keep it up when business is rolling and they get busy.

Don't let these pictures fool you. It looks good, but the experience was terrible. The pulled pork sandwich I ordered was cold. When I mentioned it, they remade it, but it came back lukewarm, dry, and burnt. How's that even possible? It took way too long for our food to arrive at the table. The waitress was friendly, but she was new and should have had someone with her, because she kept forgetting our orders, forgetting to bring refills, and giving separate credit cards and charging the wrong cards with the wrong orders. Believe the reviews; this place isn't worth your time or money.

Driving past Big Hoffas daily in Westfield and finding the aroma no longer able to ignore. I finally intentionally pulled in and orderd theirs. Although, I wasn't disappointed in the brisket, it should have cooked at least 2-3 hours longer. Ambiance, ehh. Now the portion size of sides Mac and cheese and the Cole slaw had to be a mistake. The cup size is what I imagine you'd order from a kids menu. Maybe 2 ounce soufflés cup size. Unfortunately the Mac and cheese was horrid. It tasted like combining a generic version of some odd flavored Campbells cream soup, with dirty dish water blended into what was once perfectly delicious, traditional grannies recipe. Additionally, the bread was hard. The good news is, it didn't make me mad when I threw the bad away. I think if I do return, I'll forego the two toddler sides and order ala-cart and just get the brisket. One more thing, whats with the unsanitary curtains sprawled across the behind the scenes action, where the "magic" is created? Why is it hidden? What are we missing? Overall, the joint gets 3 stars. The gross ripoff sides get a zero, which is why the brisket got robbed. DO BETTER Big Hoffas. Please?

It is a bit hard to determine where to order given the large space once you walk in, but they have a counter with a chalkboard menu to the left along the wall. They have a TON of choices and a lot of great sounding sides. The best deals are either platters or meals, as they come with sides and drinks. But they also offer specials during the week which makes things interesting. We got fried chicken breast (as out of all other chicken options almost) with a side of coleslaw. Tasty but a bit dry on the chicken. They do have at least 6 sauces to use (self serve) so that helped but I'd probably try another option next time. I'm more of a heavily seasoned preference if going to go for chicken, so found it also a bit bland. But well cooked and fresh! The sides of several others were great with a lot of variety so you can mix and match. Everyone ate the majority of their meals, so I think it went over well as a new option. The portions are large for the price so you won't go away hungry for sure! It is worth checking out and I appreciate their commitment to Barbeque.

There were a few designs to choose from: a lobster, an oyster, and a fish, from what I can recall. She also introduced me to our gracious host for the evening, Nolan, who was running the show. Nolan is a big ball of energy and a joy to be around. He set the vibes to light, fun and whimsical and I really appreciated that. Everyone moved around the room freely, visiting all of the tasting stations that were set up with whimsical, hand-drawn decorations on the paper tablecloths (much like that seen on the Pinterest commercial). There were 6 different ones, all with multiple options at each station. I tried sardines, razor clams, pickled ramps, an entire array of Fishwife tinned items, mustards, seafood dip that is made in-house, oysters, the list goes on. They also introduced me to an Indiana-based soda company call Bollygood, with Indian-inspired flavors. I love, love, love the Lime Basil Cumin flavor. I wasn't too sure about that combo, but it was delicious and super-refreshing. It smelled like a taco...but didn't taste like one! The Lemon Mango Turmeric was really good too. I also enjoyed the demonstrations lead by Chef Amber. She also has a light that was a pleasure to witness. I could just tell that she really loves what she does. While she does not work there, she still gets to come back for the fun stuff (her words). She has been a huge influence on the whole tinned fish movement at the smokehouse and develops recipes and curates these events alongside Nolan and the team. I loved both recipes that were shared with us and her enthusiasm to show us how we can elevate the tinned fish beyond the can. We mingled. We made friends. I spent a pretty penny on several of the delicious items that I was introduced to. I look forward to attending more events here in the future.

There are also a few small tables outside, in front of the restaurant that you can sit as well. The woman working there was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. They serve barbecue, fried chicken, burgers, steaks, salmon, nachos, ham, brats, salads, sandwiches and wraps. I order the 3 piece fried chicken platter, which came with two sides (french fries and collard greens). I came on a Tuesday, but I should have came on a Friday because the fried chicken is buy one, get one free on Fridays. Oh well, now I know. The fried chicken is made to order, so it took about 20 minutes for me to get my meal, but it was fresh. I will admit, at first, I was a bit skeptical because the chicken was a lot lighter than I was used to. However, it was love at first bite. It was so crispy and delicious. The collard greens had a sweet vinegary taste to it and I liked that as well. You will find a sauce buffet here, with a bunch of different sauces and condiments that you can put in small containers that they provide and you can get them to-go or use it in the restaurant, like I did. I put some on the sauce on the already delicious chicken and it made it even better. I really like this place, It is kind of tucked away, so I am glad that I found it. We'll be back soon to sample more of the menu option and take advantage of the beautiful view from the deck. First, know you DO NOT have to pay track admission at any time, including race days (the 500 & 400), to dine at the restaurant. Just inform the yellow shirts (there during races) as you enter off 16th Street you're there to dine at the Smokehouse. They'll wave you right in. Their regular hours are 11 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. However, they opened Sunday from 11-5 for the Brickyard 400 fans. Free parking is conveniently located in front of the restaurant. The Flag Room (over 21 only) is just off the lobby to the left and tastefully decorated in black and white race decor with a 60's feel. Slightly dated decor in the venue section of the building but it's coming back! The Flag Room has bar seating or 4-top tables with windows overlooking the back of turn 2 of the track. There was another dining area inside for under 21 patrons when we visited. Not sure if that area is always an option. As we entered the Flag Room our server asked if we'd prefer to sit on the deck. Yes, of course, on this beautiful fall day. And thank you for asking!! We could see both the jumbotron at IMS, hear the cars right next door and enjoy the players on the golf course all while sitting on the deck. On normal, non-racing days it's very peaceful and quiet. The deck is a large, family friendly, three tier deck overlooking the stunning Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. Room for families, friends or co-workers after work or a quiet table for two. The menu is larger than I expected. Simple two-sided menu with starters on one side and main courses on the other. A few of the appetizers are BBQ pulled nachos, smoked chicken wings, loaded fries, Smokehouse chili and three salads (Caesar, chef, tex-mex). Main courses are mostly sandwiches such as pulled pork hoagies, beef brisket, turkey bacon club, burger, tenderloin, chicken, smoked brisket tacos, house smoked baby back ribs and a veggie wrap. My husband ordered the Brisket sandwich which was not only a delicious sandwich but a good value for the price. It was served with yummy, thick, homemade chips finished off with their own in-house seasoning. Quite tasty and I ususally don't care for thick chips. I ordered a cup of the Smokehouse Chili with cheese and onion. I enjoyed the meaty, tomato based chili. For my entree I had the flavorful pulled pork hoagie served with excellent lightly battered fries. Again, it was a generous portion of pulled pork with a smokey sauce that had just a touch of sweetness. Most sauces are to sweet for me but I really enjoyed this one. The fries were amazing with a light batter, golden brown and seasoned well. Our server, Alicia I think, was attentive, very personable and friendly. Our drinks remained full, our tasty food arrived quickly and the prices are reasonable for the portion sizes.
