Poor Doc...this was definitely not his night. Our party of 4 was seated immediately and then it was downhill from there. Too many issues to go into detail but it appeared our waitress was struggling. Some issues were: -Appetizer came after our food. -Waitress forgot to enter 1 entree from our party so she waited while we ate. -We were missing 1 side and all condiments (cocktail, tarter sauce, butter) when the food came. -We were never offered refills and 1 member never got any water. -Fish was barely warm and had little taste. -Fans were blowing so hard we had to anchor everything on our table. Doc's Seafood is a legendary name in this area with a 34 year history proclaiming the "Best fried shrimp in the entire civilized world." Doc's Seafood Shack has been in the same location but several years ago Doc's Seafood and Steaks opened up more recently with the same famous shrimp but with steaks! :-) I've had their shrimp on many occasions so I thought I'd be that guy who goes to a seafood joint and orders a steak. (Should be okay here) We treated a Boston friend to dinner here recently and everyone was happy, even me who is pretty picky when it comes to steak. My honey had the crab cakes, that she very much enjoyed, I tried them and they were a little fishy for my taste, but that's just me. I had the Kansas City's Best, which is a 12 oz New York Strip which is aged 29 days with a loaded baked potato and rolls. The steak was lightly seasoned and cooked perfectly and I did enjoy it, with just a little too much fat and sinew but overall I enjoyed it. Our friend opted for the Super Seafood Platter that had fried shrimp, oysters, stuffed crab, fish filet, with french fries, coleslaw, and hash puppies and he was very happy with his choice. I wish I could give star rating on food and service separately. Food wise, would not recommend. I ordered the fried fish, and it really tasted heavy on the oil, and honestly, I thought it was going to look more like a whole piece. I didn't even finish it. My sister had the soft shell crab, and it lacked taste and was not meaty, she was disappointed. My other sister had the fried shrimp, which was the best full meal at the table. The only reason I didn't leave the restaurant still hungry because of the baked potato (which was small) and the coleslaw, and my sisters shared their hushpuppies with me. I strongly recommend sitting outside,as the ambience was much better. The inside looks dull ans the air is full of fried smell. That night also had live music. Service was great, our waitress was Rachel, I suggest you ask if she is working and get her table, because she gives a good review of things. Just picked up gumbo BUT wish I had ordered it online where it asks rice or no rice. Just emptied out the rice. Not sure why they didn't ask if you want it or not but will make sure I don't forget that next time it definitely was added on the top. I am a no rice gumbo gal. read more

Oysters where 'meh'. We all got Chopped steak and I believe because the overall pricing for other items was just too high. I got filled up but the overall price to food vs food quality was really not there. I don't plant on going back. If I am getting oysters it's Oyster House or Flora-bama (Char Grilled) are the bomb. :45 minute wait, but we went at the busiest time. Restaurant was behind on cleaning up. Lettuce and cracker wrappers were in some of our seats. Various debris around on the floor. Waitress was very nice and patient. We all got iced tea ($3 each) and she brought and left a pitcher. Any time we just want some good fried seafood, we go to Doc's. We usually go to the old location but this one is good too. I always get the fried seafood platter and it is consistently good, especially the shrimp and oysters. Great service from Chase (or Chance?). The fish was gross and googling the type of fish they used swai.. it's comparable to tilapia... bottom feeder fish. Blackened mahi was meh. Coleslaw was gross. Nice atmosphere, perfect for kids. I wouldn't go back. Definitely not the best fried shrimp I've ever had. Save your money and go somewhere else if you want some good seafood. The vaunted fried shrimp was essentially tasteless due to the HEAVY breading, the baked potato was hard, and you have to make your own cocktail sauce out of horseradish and ketchup at your table. We went here with a huge party recently and I was blown away by the service and food. The food wasn't surprising of course Docs is the fried shrimp capital of the world imo. We have been going to Docs for decades at this point but have not been to this location. It is so nice! There is a space for kids to run around, corn hole, and a lovely covered seating spot. Our waitress was amazing! She took care of all 10 of us and we are not easy to deal with so this was very nice. Fried Shrimp are a staple here and are my highest recommendation. Their hush puppies are also delicious and add some honey mustard. The sauces are great here and the ranch is perfect on their amazing fries. Love this place and will continue to come back. read more

This restaurant has been a fixture of the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach community for many years. In all the many years we've been coming here on vacation we've never eaten here because we never wanted to brave the lines when we rode by the original location on Canal Rd. So when we saw there was a newer location on the main drag in OB we decided to give it a try. Boiled shrimp were really good, grilled trigger fish was good as well. Sides were very mediocre and bland. Hush puppies were an embarrassment for any respectable seafood restaurant. Captain D's has way better hushpuppies. However, my main complaint about a location that calls itself a "seafood" restaurant is this. When I asked about the species of fish on the combo platters and fish poboy sandwich I was told that the only fish they had on the menu was the grilled triggerfish and all fried fish was Swai, an Asian farm raised catfish imported from various Asian countries like Malaysia. Swai is not from the sea. It is a freshwater, farmed fish and it is not even from the US. No redfish, flounder, snapper, amberjack, etc. were on the menu, all of which are caught locally. Worse, there are plenty of local catfish farms where a quality US grown catfish fillet could be purchased for their fried fish on the menu. What the heck? If I were a local catfish farmer I would have to rally some folks to get a message to the Doc's ownership. Lastly, no, I did not complain to management or try to coerce them for free food or discount. Those people are embarrassing as well. 3 stars are just for the quality of the entrees. My wife purchased a T-shirt while we were waiting to be seated. So when someone asks her about our experience she can give them an honest review. read more
