Been coming down to OBA for a long time. Never been to Doc's because it always looked crowded. Well, yesterday, we decided to try the new location by the beach. It wasn't crowded at all when we arrived. Very cool location. It kind of had a warehouse-style vibe. We were seated quickly and well taken care of. They had a way you could make your own cocktail sauce at the table with all the fixings and recipe. Very unique! I got the fried shrimp, as it is their claim to fame. It didn't disappoint at all! Very very good fresh gulf shrimp well fried. The fries, slaw, and hush puppies were outstanding as well. Doc's lived up to their reputation and then some. Highly recommended. read more

We went to this establishment today to eat with my family. We with high expectations because of their reputation. We sat down and I have not been treated so rudely in my life. As we were ordering drinks the waiter said to us, "Do you not hear me, do you not understand English?" We did not say anything, but decided to pay for our drinks and leave. While paying for our drinks, the cashier asked me, "What happened?" I explained what happened and she called the manager. He was apologetic and asked me was there anything he could do? Wait wasn't bad at all for Spring Break. Now I know why. We had the Seafood Platter with grilled and fried shrimp since the sign says "Best Fried Shrimp in the Civilized World." Shrimp was super gummy like a frozen shrimp would be. No seasonings at all on the fried shrimp or the batter on the fried crab claws we got as an appetizer. The shrimp were perfectly fried and we all made the same comment, we were excited that there were no shells on the shrimp tails, so you could just pop the whole shrimp into your mouth. They were perfectly seasoned and fried and the sides were good also. read more

Doc's is one of our favorite locations to eat when we visit the Gulf Coast. We love their gumbo so much that I have the recipe and make batches at home each year. The night we visited there was live music. It was a bit loud but the artist sang well. The food was great and portions were larger than at other spots. Of course, pricing at the beach is always a bit higher so getting good sized portions helps when paying the bill. Definitely recommend! read more

First off went in 45 before closing which I was nervous about but it was my first day in Orange Beach and I wanted oysters so bad. I planned on leaving a big tip to make up for it. Walked in everything I can disregard. But this bartender was a grade A C U Next Tuesday. She was rude to the staff and especially to us. We ordered to pick up as it was right across from our condo on the beach. I was craving clams. Ordering online was easy and the order was ready quickly. We were pleasantly surprised by the fried shrimp. And my husband loved the gumbo. We did not dine in so I cannot let you know how the restaurant's ambiance would be for dining in. We went to docs for dinner to try the best fried shrimp in the universe. that is what the billboard said on the highway. they did not disappoint us. The dinner was great. Large portions, tasty menu selections, and friendly servers. My only complaint is that they serve Swia or basa fish. that is the trashiest fish on the planet. At first I was a bit disappointed knowing that their lunch special for Mondays did not include their "famous" fried shrimp. However , a trifold ad on the table displayed several options that included 6 fried shrimp and the choice of a side and slaw for $13.99. Poor Doc...this was definitely not his night. Our party of 4 was seated immediately and then it was downhill from there. Too many issues to go into detail but it appeared our waitress was struggling. Some issues were: -Appetizer came after our food. -Waitress forgot to enter 1 entree from our party so she waited while we ate. -We were missing 1 side and all condiments (cocktail, tarter sauce, butter) when the food came. -We were never offered refills and 1 member never got any water. -Fish was barely warm and had little taste. -Fans were blowing so hard we had to anchor everything on our table. Doc's Seafood is a legendary name in this area with a 34 year history proclaiming the "Best fried shrimp in the entire civilized world." Doc's Seafood Shack has been in the same location but several years ago Doc's Seafood and Steaks opened up more recently with the same famous shrimp but with steaks! :-) I've had their shrimp on many occasions so I thought I'd be that guy who goes to a seafood joint and orders a steak. (Should be okay here) We treated a Boston friend to dinner here recently and everyone was happy, even me who is pretty picky when it comes to steak. My honey had the crab cakes, that she very much enjoyed, I tried them and they were a little fishy for my taste, but that's just me. I had the Kansas City's Best, which is a 12 oz New York Strip which is aged 29 days with a loaded baked potato and rolls. The steak was lightly seasoned and cooked perfectly and I did enjoy it, with just a little too much fat and sinew but overall I enjoyed it. Our friend opted for the Super Seafood Platter that had fried shrimp, oysters, stuffed crab, fish filet, with french fries, coleslaw, and hash puppies and he was very happy with his choice.
