We came here on a whim since there was no wait on a Saturday evening for 5. The place was still busy though as we passed on a table with a grill, which then would've been a wait. We ordered the Pork Belly Bibimbap ($19), Kalbitang ($27), Steak Cubes ($40), Kalbi ($38), and Dokebi Spicy Korean Fried Chicken ($17 for 8pcs). We also paired the meal with a pitcher of Kolsch ($36). The entrees come with 6 banchans, which had some unique options like burdock root. Unfortunately the rest of the banchans were not well marinated/fermented. Also, when we asked for a refill of the banchans, the server never came back. When I asked again, she brought it but questioned me that we already got ours, which was strange as I confirmed that the banchans were unlimited. What's the point of a Korean restaurant that doesn't serve unlimited banchans?! Anyways, the rest of the food was good --not bad, not great. Everything also tasted different from how it is typically made. It almost felt like it was Korean food made to cater to non-Koreans. I tried their Kalbi burrito and their Korean fried chicken. It was okay. Their fried chicken was more Asian fusion and didn't taste like the ones you typically find at Korean restaurant. The kalbi burrito was also okay but not as flavorful as some of the kalbi I have tried in the past. A little disappointed the restaurant didn't come with small appetizers like most Korean restaurant. It's a good family friendly or date night experience and that's hard to do. Maybe that just means that it's an all around easy and good experience perhaps? I came here with a good friend and her two daughters for my first time; not theirs. It's a little pricier than other similar establishments. The food is very good so you can't really be mad about that fact. Literally every plate was delicious. Each of the dishes was well seasoned. Even if you overcooked something, you couldn't mess up the flavor. We got a little busy eating a few times that we forgot to pull things off the grill but they were still perfect. It was nice to check out initially, but when it came time to order, one waiter didn't seem sure how to serve us, which created confusion. At that point, I began recording. For the bbq we did a single order of each: steak cubes, spicy bulgogi, and chadolbaegi. This, with rice and the banchan was a perfect amount for 3 people. The meat was fresh and high quality, and came with garlic, onions, broccoli, and mushrooms to grill with it. It was also served with soy sauce and a delicious peanut sauce for dipping. We also had the yuzu margaritas and a sake that we enjoyed. Our server was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was a perfect mix of bustling but quiet enough to hear all your tables conversations. Was craving korean bbq one day and decided to go here. First off, their selection banchan was fresh and delicious! My favorite were the bean sprouts and the spinach. Had a couple plates of meat - standout was the kalbi. It was perfectly marinated and was sweet and savory. The grain rice accompanied the meal well. The bibimbap came with a few banchan (side dishes), I really enjoyed the fermented bean one. If you order a bibimbap, definitely order it in the hot pot to get the crispy rice. It's also a pretty big portion so you could share it between two people. The seafood was a bit overcooked but overall I did enjoy it. The mushroom burrito on the other hand was a miss. The flavor of the mushrooms didn't come through and it tasted quite bland, especially eating it along side the bibimbap. Walking away at a ~$80 bill with just 2 beers (pre-gratuity), I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants authentic Korean food. I would recommend it for the outdoor seating, service and drinks however. We did not try the KBBQ so this review is not for that. Sat outside due to COVID-19 guidelines and although service was great, the review sits at 3 stars because the food was not the best. Pros: - Outdoor seating was nice, especially during COVID, availability on both sides of the block. Cons: Banchan - salty. Practically everything was too salty to the point where we did not eat much of the Banchan. Soy Ginger Wings (8pcs) - Luckily not too salty, but unfortunately not flavorful enough. No where near the crispiness of regular Korean wings. Dejang Jiggae - Just okay Kalbi Jjim - Tasted very mediocre as if it was a broth whipped in 5 minutes, abused with soy sauce and mirin. After that we shared the single portion of the pork belly BBQ dish which you cook yourself on the table grill. The pork belly comes with mushrooms, peppers, onions and garlic to grill as well. It is served with lettuce, allowing you to eat the pork belly and other vegetables as a lettuce wrap, as well as a delicious bean paste and some rice. This was enough food for the two of us. When stirring it you get that crispy rice on the bottom, spoons perfectly right off. I've been to many Korean restaurants that can't seem to perfect it as the rice sometimes sticks to the pot and gets mushy. Loved all the sides they had to offer especially the kimchi! I've had Korean BBQ a handful of times, and I am inclined to say that Dokebi would be my last choice. The ambiance and service - its a bar turned into a Korean BBQ restaurant. Its a bit dark, and the service is friendly, but slow. It took about 10 minutes for us to get glasses of water when the dining area was almost empty. Our waitress was friendly, but it seems like she had to balance managing the restaurant area as well as the bar all the way in the back. The food - for apps we ordered the edamame which seems like it was boiled for too long (super mushy) and an order of pork/veggie dumplings (aka mandoo... these weren't bad). My friend and I also decided to split the Steak Cubes (portion for 2) served with extra virgin olive oil, salt + pepper, broccoli, onion, mushroom, and wasabi soy sauce. At a whopping $34, you'd expect to leave full or at least get more of the complimentary sides that Korean BBQ places in NYC offer. If you are going to have a Korean BBQ restaurant so close to Manhattan, you should compete with what Manhattan is offering, no? Isn't that how this works? Not here apparently! The steak was delicious, don't get me wrong, but you get a much better experience it Koreatown. Also their Shabu Shabu (Japanese Style) is $49... WHUT? Again, I'm sure its delicious, but this isn't a high-end place and Shabu Shabu is usually SUPER cheap. We got the "spicy" chicken wings...NO FLAVOR whatsoever, no spice at all. It's like they just dipped a chicken wing in some frying oil and threw it on our plates. We also got the spicy bulgogi-again, zero spice- and the steak chops. It was so bad we had to ask for salt and pepper.
