On Friday night I had my first meal at Doma and decided to finally join Yelp in order to profess my love for it! I went with five of my girlfriends to celebrate my friend's birthday and arrived with A LOT of alcohol! The waiter came over immediately to open the wine we wanted and store the rest in the back. I had brought a bottle of saki with us and asked if it was at all possible to have it heated since I love hot saki. I did not expect them to accommodate me but his immediate response was "of course!!" They got big points in my book for that! The menu was very exciting and we just decided to order a lot of food and split it all. Appetizers first: tuna flat bread, edamame dumplings and miso soup - all delicious! The tuna flat bread was out of this world and I would highly recommend it - the fish was so fresh! Then we started out with six specialty rolls, which were gone in about five minutes and led to us ordering three more! Our favorites were Doma, Chloe and Medusa, but I didn't eat any that I didn't love! We finished with the dessert sampler, which was a great way to finish a superb meal!! The tuna for some reason really sticks out in my mind as being the freshest, most delicious sushi-grade fish I've had in years! What will make or break a restaurant for me is the water. I know that sounds silly, but if I don't have my water glass filled at all times I just can't thoroughly enjoy my meal. I don't think my water glass was ever less than half full...more big points for this place! The service in general was great! Our waiter was very attentive and the food was served at a good pace. For all the food we ordered, I expected a huge bill...not so! Great food at a great price, who could ask for more!!! Loved this place. Looking for good sushi in Philly? Search no more. What a great place. The atmosphere is nice, clean, and quiet. The service is on point and the food is even better. I started off with a miso, very tasty and nice and hot how I like it. (A bad habit of mine is tasting restaurants Miso soups as an indicator of how the rest of the food will be.) My partner doesn't like raw food/sushi so I got a rock shrimp appetizer to start us off. It was good and enough to share, I've had better though. He ordered the chicken katsu which was better than most. I had to order the hamachi jalepeno and it was divine and fresh! I also ordered the crispy rice with salmon on top and that was so so delicious! As per recommendation of the waiter I got the double spicy tuna roll and it was a great balance of spice, tuna, and sweetness. I left completely full yet not feeling disgusting. This place is really solid. I didn't have the sushi, and I didnt have to - there were all sorts of amazing and interesting things on the menu. The Korean tacos, lettuce wraps, and other other foods were delicious. The restaurant is super busy, though, so it was rather loud. It would be even better if it was quieter, but I suppose that is not the point in a super-modern trendy joint like this. Very nice, will return. read more

I first walked in and was greeted by the host and he walked my family to our seats, he was very polite and he listened to what we wanted to eat and explained perfectly what was what. He even came back to our table because one of our meals came with cucumber kimchi, which is spicy, and we don't like spicy, but regardless he asked us not having the knowledge of we like it or not which I greatly appreciated. The food came very fast and the price for the food is fair. My brother doesn't eat with chopsticks which is what they had, before my brother asked for a fork and knife the waiter asked, "does anyone need utensils?" Amazing The food tastes wonderful, I don't usually have teriyaki sauce, because there is usually too much on my plate, my brother said, "This is amazing and there is a perfect amount of teriyaki sauce!" Such friendly staff and a cute and cozy atmosphere. The waiter offered us complementary, delicious edamame while we were waiting for our appetizer, which did not end up taking long to arrive. The rolls are delicious and the wait staff is very helpful with making menu decisions. I highly recommend the "Rachel" roll, and the okonomiyaki is divine. My fiance and I had our Valentines Day dinner here. I am impressed. The atmosphere is very nice. It feels a lot like Shiroi Hana. We ordered the Octopus Ceviche as an appetizer, and I had the sushi deluxe, while my fiance had a Dragon Roll and a California Roll as our main courses. It was all delicious. They treated us to Miso Soup, Edamame, and a few other things. The most impressive was the seven inch sea eel sushi. It was absolutely delicious. One of the best things I've had. Their sushi portions were very large (something the specialize in, we were told) and we both left very full. We had the hand made chocolate dipped strawberry mochi for desert. If you're looking for something that's not overpoweringly sweet, give it a try. It's probably relatively healthy as far as deserts go as well. People talk up Umai Umai a lot, and it is legitimately great, but the portion sizes are small which makes it less of a value for your money, especially if you have a big appetite. Combine that with its popularity, which can make it hard to even get a seat on a weekend occasionally, and this place looks more and more attractive. They plan on doing take out and limited delivery in very near future. Our waiter, Dan, was a gentleman and was a great conversationalist. He made sure we were comfortable and the service was prompt. I hope this place really takes off, but I have to admit it was nice that it was just the two of us for dinner. The only hiccup was an issue with the credit card processing before I left, which took only a few minutes to resolve, so we didn't really notice. The two of us will be going back, and regularly. So far, I've only had one visit here, but I feel like I'll be back for more since I liked what I tried and there is so much more to try on the extensive menu. The miso soup starter was nicely warm and tasted fairly standard. The soup was followed up by a collection of rolls, signature and regular. The fish in the rolls I had were fairly standard staples -- salmon, yellowtail, and albacore (tuna, I guess?). The signature rolls included unique combinations, like the naked salmon - which wasn't even really a roll, but salmon tartare over a square of crispy rice, or the island and hamachi verde, which included fruits (mango and kiwi). If you care, the soy sauce they provide by default is the low-sodium soy sauce (so, you know, you aren't so parched at the end of the meal). The service was friendly and competent. It's BYOB, so do bring your own booze and they will provide you with appropriate stemware. The space is small but well laid out and modern in decor. It can get crowded, so consider making a reservation if you want to eat here at prime dinner time. They provide reusable (yay!) chopsticks and real (as in cloth) (and also reusable) napkins, which is nice. read more

Great place for sushi and sashimi, if you don't want to pay top dollar. It's not as good as Zama, for example, and doesn't have a full bar. But I enjoyed my triple spicy tuna rolls (which weren't that spicy), my sashimi, and other varieties. I don't have a great taste for sushi (though I'd like to develop one)--so I might not be the best judge on this one. But for me, it was good good, great ambiance, good service, and a great, gentle staff. Recommended, for sure. read more

Quality was on par with Yakitori Boy so I was a little annoyed that prices were $14 for a dragon roll where you can find that for $8 - $12 at other spots in the city. Service was fantastic however. Cute little sushi place by the art museum. Came here with two friends and we all enjoyed our sushi! Everything was fresh and reasonably priced. I started with the seaweed salad which was very good. Then I ordered the pachinko which was fresh and full of flavor! I loved all the fruit on the roll. I also split the spicy tuna roll but I didn't love it. However I am not a big fan of spicy tuna rolls that are very mayo-y so my distaste is just personal preference. Definitely worth going back to! read more

Great find in Fairmount. Went there last night and had a really nice dinner. The service could not have been better- we were seated quickly, and an ice bucket was brought out for our wine (BYOB!) right away. The waitress gave us time to chat and look everything over, and also made some great recommendations. We never felt rushed or crowded. We started with the edamame (traditional) and the Spicy Tuna Flatbread. The Flatbread was amazing. Thin slices of tuna atop a crispy, thin bread, with spicy mayo and a thin slice of tomato, jalapeno and red onion. Very interesting and delicious. For sushi, we ordered the Crunch Spicy Tuna, Rock n Roll, Triple Spicy Double Tuna, and Island. All were really well prepared and fresh. The Triple Spicy Double Tuna is a must. Hint of spice with the spicy mayo and sriracha, but it did not over power the fresh tuna. The Crunch Spicy Tuna and Rock n Roll were both fairly basic rolls, but again the quality was exceptional, and flavor was perfect. Doma was inexpensive and high quality. I would 100% come again and recommend to anyone who is looking for an alternative to the many sushi restaurants in center city. read more

I have been here multiple times and I feel it is necessary to share the wonderful experiences I've had. First off, the place is small yet wisely laid out so you don't feel overwhelmed (mind you I have only been for lunch for what that's worth). The ambience is quite nice as the owners have obviously taken the time to decorate in a classy yet not over the top way. But honestly, I couldnt give two shits about ambience, just throwing it out there for those that may be interested. What I care about is the food and nothing more (unless im paying for a total experience, ie fine dining). Waiters were polite, attentive and helpful, as I was not familiar with many of the dishes. I realize Im rambling so let me get to it. You HAVE to try the korean tacos, specifically the spicy pork. They are delicious because they have the perfect mix of korean flavors and mexican/latin flavors. The cilantro provides a distinct flavor which goes so well with the kimchi and spicy pork. I cannot stress enough how good these are. If you have any reservations about the korean taco, keep in mind these have been replicated throughout the city and any real foodie will tell you Doma has the vest. Also recommend the tempura jalapeno stuffed with tuna and cream cheese. I know it may sound odd but the flavors are so great and diverse that you will thank me later. Doma has made me a Sushi convert! The sushi is consistently good whether eating there or taking out. They really do deserve 5 stars, but there are just two things that knock them down a peg: 1. The wife and I come here just about every week. Being a small business supporter I would hope that they recognize those customers who are loyal. Every week we come and every week they pretend like they don't notice. We tip well! 2. The high tables. There is nothing I love more than a good BYOB and this one doesn't disappoint. I just happened to stumble across this sushi restaurant on my walk home yesterday and it was a great treat! I had just come home from Japan within the past few days, and I had THE BEST sushi at the Tsukiji Market in Japan, but this place is not too shabby for being in America, and for being so far away from the shore. My husband and I popped in around lunch time (1:45 ish). We shared the Asian Salad and the Sashimi appetizer. The salad soy/vinaigrette was quite delicious and the salad was colorful and appealing. The sashimi was also delicious, though one slice was slightly fishy. For my lunch course, I had the Pachinko Roll (only because I loved the pachinko spots in Japan) and it turned out to be great (Oishii desu!)! My husband had the salmon/avocado roll and the yellowtail scallion roll. Though it doesn't sound like a lot of food, we were full off of what we ordered. The bill was in the $50's, which was totally reasonable for the sushi quality. The staff was attentive and fast. The decor is neat and minimalist. I cannot wait to go back again, order a Pachinko roll and something new :) Doma is much better than the other sushi restaurants in the area, though I think it is a lateral move from Umai Umai in terms of hand rolls. Great BYOB Japanese/Korean restaurant! It's quite small inside so I would recommend making a reservation. I came here with my sisters on a Friday night around 7 and had a reservation. It shortly got packed inside. The service was great, the waitress was quick to come to our table, open our bottles of wine, get us water, and take our order for appetizers within the first 5 minutes of sitting down. And our meals came out rather quickly too which was surprising for sushi dishes! I'm used to waiting long for my meals when at a sushi place. Pork buns were okay, and the sweet potato roll was pretty standard, nothing special...But the other two rolls were awful. Both the salmon and scallop used smelled EXTREMELY fishy. I have a strange relationship with sushi. I love it, but after getting really sick from a super market sushi, I have a hard time trusting new sushi places. I even started making my own, which is great, but really time consuming. When I went to Doma it was highly recommended and unlike most places it had real chopsticks. This really made me like the place more. I ordered the bibimbap roll and the salmon skin roll because I really love salmon skin. I'm the type of person that puts the entire dollop of wasabi in my soy sauce and I don't think it is spicy, but the bibimbap came with a sauce that I thought was a little spicy. I loved it! Doma is BYOB and they will chill your bottle of wine, until you're ready to drink it. I'm writing this review the day after and I feel good, so Doma is great in my book. read more

The tuna was pretty fresh. The sad thing was that I think the tuna made the dish a bit wet so none of the rice ever crisp up. My friend had the bee and egg bibimbap and said he had crispy rice. The steamed shrimp dumplings were bland and soggy. Like they popped them out of the freezer and over steamed them. Spicy tuna and Chloe roll. Both were okay, but completely unmemorable. My new favorite in Philadelphia, thanks to fellow yelpers. This place was a lot smaller than I expected. Located just off Ben Franklin Pkwy and the museums, it has about 40 seats and a very cool decor. Wall surfaces contrast between wood, stone and wavy paper. Great lighting fixtures provide further accent. Our server was nice and kept the food staged nicely, along with keeping our water glasses full. Crowd was younger than Rittenhouse Square and closer to the Northern Liberties feel. Now on to the food: Shared everything with my daughter Taylor and wish the rest of the family was here since we wanted to try a bunch of stuff and portions are large. First thing served was the Dok Bok Ki. These are warm rice cakes in a spicy sauce. This place is a fusion between Japanese and Korean and this dish is all Korean and a real treat. It comes in about six pieces that tube shaped. Great texture. Chewy and reminded me a bit of glutonous rice balls in Hong Kong. The sauce had some real heat; I believe Siracha was one of the ingredients. Wanted to finish these but did not, knowing lots more food ahead. Next we were served a miso soup and house salad. A good miso soup is a prerequisite for any decent Japanese restaurant. Perfect flavor. The house salad had mixed micro greens and a light dressing on the side. Not the typical ginger doused salad. Lighter, healthier and delicious. A daily special was served next and was awesome. A massive bowl of warm spicy garlic edamame. GREAT flavor. Next up was the DIY hand roll. Really fun dish but didn't have the spicy scallions as listed on the menu. The dish had a platter of seaweed wrap, some tuna and salmon, rice, spicy sauce, fish eggs, and slices of cucumber and avacado, and some sprouts. Great fish and a different twist, especially with accomplished sushi chefs inches away who could roll this a lot better than us. Last was our sushi platter. We had the Triple Spicy Double Roll, the Doma Roll and the Omakase Roll, which is chefs choice of about six sushi pieces. The Triple Spicy was my favorite. Probably the spiciest roll I have ever had. I like heat. It was too much for Taylor. Not for everyone but if you like spicy tuna with lots of kick, this is your dish! The Doma Roll is kind of tough to eat. Because of difficulty handling I will not order again. It is rice free and rolled in cucumber. It is loaded with different fish and has great flavor. A little boring for me as I am diving into the ultra hot Triple Spicy pieces. The chefs choice Omakase presentation was great with an assortment of yellowtail, fluke, tuna, etc. All were really good except I didn't care for one that had some sort of fish in a pate. They don't have a liquor license but they are BYO. Most tables had wine. There is a beer distributor acrooss the street. We had green tea that hit the spot. Looking forward to returning to try different samplings. The Korean hot dishes looked awesome. Nice to branch out to a different neighborhood and experience this fantastic find. read more

Order from there a lot for delivery (I live 1/2 block away) twice a week usually. Standard order is 43 dollars. I pay with a credit card. I usually do everywhere. I never carry cash. GF and I just called to place an order for delivery, ordering $66 in sushi. Was told there was a $75 MINIMUM purchase requirement for CC purchases for delivery. This not only violates the 2010 federal bill mandating that CC minimum purchases can't exceed $10, but it's just profoundly stupid. I reported them to Mastercard, and will likely never order from them or go there again. Greed like that can't be tolerated or encouraged. Came here on NYE around 7:30pm. It was busy, but the service was great! The waitress was friendly and was apologetic for the long wait to place an order (we didn't notice that it was a long wait since we were all excited for NYE). She gave us a free edamame on the house as a result! This place is also BYOB and they are very willing to open your bottles, offer glasses, and serve you. The food is excellent. We definitely think the sushi is the best in the Spring Garden/Fairmount area! The variety of sushi along with all the entrees allow plenty to choose from. Average 4 stars for this place? No freaking way. We arrived at Philly pretty late from DC so we decided to grab a quick bite before checking in a hotel. I ordered Nabeyaki Udon and my husband ordered two rolls, Negihamachi and Salmon with Avocado. Sushi: Grocery store offers even better sushi than this place. Sushi rice had no taste, slimy fish and omg, what is up with their soy sauce? So light in color and I'm thinking they might be offering Tawainese soy sauce. Both sucked. Nabeyaki Udon: does they even know how to make udon broth? I mean all they need to use is Hondashi. I think they only seasoned it with water with soy sauce and mirin. I had to add Shichimi to adjust the flavor. Also Nabetaki egg yolk needs to be slightly raw, but this one is overcooked. They added too much onion slices than noodles, and it simply was really bad. Despite the fact the food sucked and my water glass has a few lipstick marks on it, the service was ok and waitresses were friendly enough. Owners: if you are reading this, please try your food and make sure that sushi chef and kitchen staff understand what the sushi rice and nabeyaki udon should taste like. The best sushi in Philly is this BYO hidden away in Fairmount. This is not your romantic sushi spot, but the rolls are consistently excellent and the prices are reasonable. The inside is small, and can get a little loud, but you shouldn't need a reservation unless it's peak hours. Pros: They should be known for the Medusa Roll. I also like their crunchy spicy tuna roll and fried pork dumplings. The service is great and timing is just right. And of course its BYO! Cons: Their hours are inconsistent around holidays, they don't deliver very far, and they have some odd cash policies, but they do take cards. read more

I've been coming here since it opened (I even have my own name of "Fire Guy" in there due to a funny story) and have received the same outstanding service and delicious food throughout the years. Everything from the appetizers to the dinners and then the desserts are phenomenal. Add to the fact that it's a BYOB and that makes it as perfect as a restaurant as you can find. I highly recommend the Triple Spicy Crunch Tuna roll, the Tuna Club roll, the Chloe as well as the strawberries as dessert. I've also had their bibimbap as well as ramen and both were exceptional.
